New Project B42 Diesel Conversion


I am a new member, and wanted to share my new project with other Mack fans.

This is my 1962 B42 that was originally sold as a gas single axle dump truck, and was later, (about 1975) converted to a END673 by a local mack dealer. I need a little help with the front axle, as i would like to change it over to power steering and budd wheels. I am not sure if it can be done, or what i need to do it. I also have a turbo from a n E6 that I would like to install if possible. This truck runs and drives excellent, and is a joy to drive!( other than the armstrong steering! lol)

any help with my project would be greatly appreciated! I am from Western PA. Thanks!

Nice looking dump truck.

The simplest way to get to power steering and Budd wheels

is to look for an axle from a newer truck.

I know that Jaime Samuell did his a few years ago and used an

axle from a mid-duty Freightliner. It worked out real well.

Obviously the spring perches have to measure fairly close,

and the overall hub to hub width has to be fairly close or the tires

will end up directly under the wheelwells, and will rub when turning

or under heavy load. So some careful measuring is in order.

The Macks were a little narrower than most of today's trucks, so look carefully.

Another consideration - the 673 doesn't have any provision to drive

a hydraulic power steering pump. The pump can be driven by a connector

that runs off the back of the generator. (See Watt's Mack - they have them)

If you want to keep the Daytons, guys like Matt Pfahl at Pfahl Mack Restorations

have some access to original Ross or Shepherd power steering units. These units

retro-fit directly onto your original axle.

Paul has it pretty much covered. Besides finding a late model axle, if you could find a budd hub to fit your current spindle?

I wouldn't bolt a turbo to that 673, as with many discussions we've had about lack of oil cooled pistons, if you try to stoke it up any, you'll ruin a perfect running motor. That's the main reason I've passed on doing it to my B model. Finding a 237 or such would be far better.

One note, a set of radial tires up front will aid tremedously to reducing the steering effort. Still not quite like power steering, but a major improvement over bias ply. I was very happy when I changed mine over to radials all around.
