Well, pulled off the near impossible. I doubled up this past weekend. I won both days. Took home ALL the money. $1000 to win each day. (This was sponsor money that guaranteed payout. If not, it goes by car count). Bonus pot $165 and $105( basically side bet by any racer that wants to enter each day, $25 each day). $25 Bounty. That is put on winner of previous race. So Sunday there was a bounty on me. If you beat me, you get $25. If no one beats me, I get the $25. In all, I had enough money to get some fuel for the trip home(30 miles). 😂 Magnolia dragstrip was my home track when I started racing in 1995. It is a real rough track now and is in need of repair. We have typically only done one 2 day event at the end of the season at Pittsburgh. Only once has that been close to being a double up winner. Friend won Sat, runnered up Sun. So this is a first for our group. Racing is a real box of chocolates. You can't count on anything. You do your best and hope the sun is shining in your lane. I am no master but glad that the sun shines on me.17 points

Sold my B75 yesterday to a nice young Gentleman from Easter KY. It was a cool old truck sitting up higher on a 78' R model Frame. but it had frame issues and I just didnt have the time to giver her what she needed. The kid already has a good western star frame with air ride rears and I think he might swap the B75 body and engine over into his good frame. This Truck has a 285 Tipturbine with a 5 speed and 3.87 rears. R model Steering and steering column that made it a breeze to turn. If had not been running since late october but we got it fired up pushing it with a cat excavator and he drove it up on the trailer. first time I had started it in winter temps and it was not too dificult all considering I was pushing with an excavator and had no speed with it. It was refreshing to see a young man with intrest in the old Iron. even brought his grand dad with him for the 20hr round trip. sad to see it go but hope this young man can do more with it than I can. Great guy if you know him heres some photos I took yesterday15 points

Got the doors taken apart on the parts H Model, I think I’m going to be ok on all the parts that got washed away, hopefully I can catch a break on weather and start putting some stuff back in my doors,, I’m still finding a few parts on the creek bank, I had the front end off the first Mack I ever purchased back in 1978 , it was a 59 B61 , it’s been long gone but I saved the hood, radiator shroud, shutters, I had them laying on a parts conex/ container. All I found was the bent Radiator shroud. The Dog was unharmed! I cut the bent piece off and hung it in my office.14 points

Hi folks, I haven’t been around in a while, it’s been busy here to say the least. I have 2 new additions recently, As the title states, I purchased a 78 R686 Mack tractor with a 285 tip turbine and a 6 speed , nice truck with low miles and next to no rust. My wife and I also welcomed our first child 4 months ago, a healthy little boy !14 points

Well, my initial intent was to replace it with something newer. But, I thought I might just see what I had and make a decision later. After tearing into it, it was just one bearing on the mainshaft that was the big problem. I have it completely apart and washing it up now. Fresh out of the truck. Lids off, back box off. Compound gears. Good shape. Grimey parts Getting mainshaft out. Sleeve was stuck. Clean parts. Mainshaft out. Someone plugged the 1st oil galley, hence bushing worn and bearing junk. Trashed, why it had 1/4" slop in shaft. Dressed the ID of sleeve so it slips over shaft easily now. Main box going for cleaning this week. I have basic bearing list. Everything seems available. Even the dreaded "double taper cone" in the back box. I found a couple new Timken on eBay for under $100? I heard that was the whole deal with rebuilding these old transmissions. All the rest are off the shelf. Will update as I go along in the next few weeks. I had no clue as I dug into this thing but I figured why not? It is already in bad shape, and if I can vastly improve it I might as well before going through the work of replacing it with an Eaton. There is still a lot of work to be done but I think it will work out in the end. I want to thank Matt and Kevin for their assistance in getting it to this point.13 points

Took the forms down today, we are going to let it cure for a week or so, before we start setting the beams. I bought a complete bridge and hauled it in ( it was a NC state road bridge) . The shop is for our business, we occasionally work on customers trucks, but mostly ours that we haul equipment with.and usually there’s an antique project in the corner. Thanks for the compliments , I’ve learned a lot from some of the guys on this site and have personally seen some of their work that’s amazing!13 points

Greetings - New to the forum and searching around for information I need. I purchased this 1980 Superliner about six months ago. I am preparing to put it to work in the next thirty days. It is powered by a 4MG serial code ATAAC B Model Caterpillar, RTLO18918B, and has TopLoader rears on Neway, 4.17 ratio. I will be doing all of the work to this truck. I am located in Northcentral PA and am a leased owner operator to William A. Spencer Jr. Trucking in Watsontown, PA. I also have a W900A Kenworth that I am restoring and a 79 Scout II that I daily drive. This is solid old Superliner with an aluminum frame. The frame is actually is very good shape, as is the rest of the truck. The bunk is by far the worst part, especially the roof, which is not currently weather tight by any stretch of the imagination. Looking forward to the journey. The truck runs and drives excellent.12 points

Hi, Here's a picture of my R-model Mack. The truck was made in 1988 in Canada and had its sleeper installed at a dealership. As guys said above in the US R-models were mostly used for local operations and construction works. So typically were not eqiupped with sleepers. Canada seems being another story and my truck was a highway tractor. I hope the overall look will help you in your project. Vlad12 points

And a little bit of artwork and pin striping to finish things up. A little nod to the original owner by adding his nickname for the company he leased to, Krajack Tank lines out of New Jersey. Just picked up the truck early this morning. What a great job this woman did gold leafing and striping the truck. Really ads to the restoration! 8DA5CA1F-C14E-4FB8-A6AF-49B40B120A8A.heic 4551CA86-9D86-4C0D-A12F-092CAF158FBC.heic12 points

Hello Forum members! I have some updates on my 1973 Mack R model, restoration I would like to share with you. I am working on the trailer air lines and electric. The door, bumper & some of the pinstripes are on. More pinstriping to follow. I sent the hood grab handle out to be chromed. Hope you all have a great Memorial Day weekend! Best Regards.....Frank12 points

Morning, haven’t logged in years here, started out with a new company currently restoring a 1998 Mack rd688 former Mercer county landfill truck in New Jersey, we are about 70% complete with the job with a couple fall backs. Hood was cracked, found an aftermarket hood had it painted and found out it was warped, ordered another one and it’s on its way. Now we’re tackling to do the duel exhaust set up from a single, wait for the hood to come in, paint and then be sent out for fender and fifth wheel. I am much better with social media then forums so I apologize in advance if I post questions in the wrong sections11 points

Hi all, well we took our Cruiseliner out for a drive today after getting insurance organised.it was really enjoyable to be out and about in it at last.the drive did show up a few niggles though.the gear change is really poor, its like stirring a bucket of bolts with a straw.me thinks the famous shift tower needs a rebuild but there is loads of power in the old girl and shes fairly comfortable.steering was good and the brakes were very good too.all in all we are really happy with it.anybody know if the parts are availible to sort out the shift tower or is it mend and make do with what we have.any ideas would be great.thanks Paul11 points

I changed the oil in the LJ today, the water line was about even with the dipstick, there was a few drops of clear water when I cracked the plug, so I drained it and ran some Diesel through it. New oil and started it up and moved it out of the mud, hopefully I can get it to my house tomorrow or Saturday.11 points

I purchased this 79 R model about 5 years ago to use on our small farm. I had planned to find a hopper at the time but unfortunately that never happened and the truck was tucked away in the shed. Fast forward 5 years later and I finally purchased a trailer. I pulled the Mack out last night and hooked it up in the yard to see what it would look like. This simple setup should be a nice asset to our farm. The Mack needs a few things including a brake relay, fluid changes, and probably update the front steers to tubless 22.5's. Anyways here are a couple pics:11 points

Good morning gentlemen. I'm Jason , I own a small trucking company and just bought a 1991 Mack MH 600 cabover to add to my fleet. It's got the 350 Cummins small cam with an 8 speed manual tranny. I'm really excited! My mechanic is going through everything now. He just did the PM , all fresh oil in the differentials and new wheel seals , bearings and shoes on the drives. Next hes gonna tackle an exhaust leak. He also fixed all the lights and fixed the wiper fluid pump that wasn't working. The AC is not working but we don't have time to dig into that right now. Ok, now the fun stuff.... The cab lifter isn't working. He removed all the hydraulic lines and had the drivers side Piston rebuilt because it was leaking badly. That was a hassle... But after that the cab still won't lift. Hes removing the pump now and is taking it the same hydraulic guy. He thinks that needs a rebuild too and and maybe the check valve inside is bad. Anyone have any experience with this??? I really wanna get this cab up because he doesn't wanna put the new fuel filters and then not be able to prime it. TY Jason11 points

Yeah, that's a thought🤔! Zina wanted to take the grill guard off from the start, but it's all welded together, so it's one piece. Heavy too- very heavy! I just got back from dropping the radiator off at a shop in Danville. Real nice guy there, said he was 77 years old and has been there since he was 13. Only works until noon, but he said he would have it done this week.11 points

Meanwhile, back at the ol' computer- This is as it sits right now, I took these pictures just a few minutes ago. It's still a work in progress, maybe just some more polishing and i'll be satisfied. I ordered more of the ceramic polish, definitely need to do the hood and the top of the cab. Might get some lettering and pinstriping done too, I don't know.11 points

I have to say my day, and probably week, has been made. The entire company was buzzing around this truck at some point, and obviously for good reason. I talked with the owner of the truck for a long time, and learned the history on this beast. It was the last display truck at the Mack HQ before Volvo took over, it is the inspiration for the Collector's Pin Set, and apparently was the model used to create the Superliner for the Farming Simulator game. I'm genuinely excited to have been part of this unit's history, and all I had to do was match up Schrader valves. The owner gave me permission to post it here, and said it'll be going to the Macungie show Lord willing!11 points

I changed it a little bit today- this IH emblem was painted solid silver at first, but I spray painted it black and then put some reflector tape on it. It's not the "official" color but I tried to paint it first with a little artist's brush and the more I painted the worse it looked 🤣. But I like this, looks pretty good I think. I'm installing seat belts in it too. They're not exactly like they're supposed to be either, but I've just gotten so used to wearing a seat belt I'm putting them in. I just have to go back to the hardware store tomorrow and get a couple of longer bolts. Then I'm going to start trying to get the cab marker lights off so I can paint them with some canned chrome. The heads of some of the screws are stripped, so I might have to drill or dremel-ize them off then hope I can get them out with vise grips.11 points

That same day brang me even more luck. While reaching a city close to the Turkish border I saw a whole lot of trucks parked and sure they took my attention. Made a U-turn, came in, made pics and had some conversation. Yes, I studied Persian to some grade during a couple of last years. Not a perfect talker at the moment but can ask a few basic things. Sure the truck-related ones were in preference.11 points

These bigger boxes are going to work out great for everything!! Lined the bottoms of both boxes with some 3/4” plywood to protect them. Added the shelf to the left equipment box. Then organized all the new chains, binders and straps for the deck into Busboy bins to keep it all organized. This should keep all my stuff from getting all tangled up and a mess.11 points

It still amazes me when I look back at this truck when I found it to what I built out of it. I have to admit the transformation is remarkable. I spent the afternoon finishing a lot of small things. I also ordered a whole bunch of new tie down equipment for the deck. I had a lot of hand me down stuff in the other truck, but figured I'd boom up and get some new and matching chains, binders and straps. All that will get organized and put into the new storage boxes once I get them mounted. I had to reschedule my meeting with the sign painter to this Thursday. I was hoping I could get the lettering and striping done before the first show, but it'll get done in a few weeks, once we settle on what I want to do to it.11 points

I still need shift towers. Now that I have them mounted, there is still plenty of slop in the handles. Nothing much I can do for them, I have been into them years back. Pins are worn, shift ball is worn. But that is for another day. Empty spot in garage I forgot to get the frame mounts cleaned and painted, so that is next but have driveshaft in, shifters on and a few other misc things attached. Once underside is done then I will get fuel and air tank back on so I can set truck back on the ground. Same Rustoleum gold I used on engine but this stuff sucks big time. No gloss, scratches off really easily. Oh well, nothing a bit of motor slobber won't cover 😟10 points

Good evening forum members. I have a few updates on the B model Restoration I am doing. I cleaned and painted the engine, did a complete tune up, (the engine now runs great) cleaned and reinstalled the original gas tank, (it was bypassed with a jug holding gas). The hydraulic tank for the hoist was empty now it is full and lifts the box. Also have the brakes grabbing but they need more service. First all the mechanical stuff then on to the cosmetics. Have a great New Years!.....Frank10 points

After cleaning and laying out all the stuff I had that didn’t get washed away, ( a lot of the internal door and window hardware, because I had it all on a work bench and they got washed down the creek) I found a complete H Model with good vent windows and all the door hardware still intact, so I purchased the whole truck for parts, My Helper and Me went and hauled it in today, hopefully I can move along with the LJ now.10 points

Well, the big green truck that runs now made it to Charlotte Courthouse. We're waiting for the parade to start, which isn't until around 3 or 3:30. Lots of trucks here. The Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum guys just rolled in with about 8 trucks. I'll have more pictures later, I have nearly non-existent phone signal here.10 points

I am not a heavy truck mechanic, but do have the mechanical inclination to understand what I was doing. I am a light truck/automotive mechanic so I must admit the the larger engine, etc was a little intimidating. I asked ALOT of questions and solicited opinions on alot of subjects from head work to camshaft/lifters to cooling system. With all the help etc I was able to get my trk up and running and so far it is running great. I no longer overheat going up the canyon empty even in the winter. I can now do this even with a load on and the engine never gets over 180 and daytime temps here have been pushing triple digits. There were a dozen or so that helped me, but right off the top of my head was Geoff Weeks, Joey Mack and Mrsmackpaul But I want to say thanks to everyone through my various posts.10 points

1980 DM686SX chugging away at a screaming 1700 RPMs blowing cement into our silo. Even in retirement we find tasks for our old trucks. Our sand/stone hauler loads our trailer for us then we unload it at our convenience. We go through anywhere from 1 to 4 loads per month depending on demand and season.10 points

The Merritt boxes I ordered came in last week and I spent today installing them. They’re matching 5’ long boxes, with dual doors that swing to the side. That’ll give me better access for my equipment. The left one is going to be for all my deck equipment and the right one will be just for storage and carrying stuff. I was going to order 2 DEF boxes and mount them to the headache rack. But, after installing these two I have a good 36” area on the passenger side between the storage and battery boxes. I’ll order one more box for there and that will be just for truck items (oils, tools and parts. I met with the sign painter on Wednesday evening. She took a bunch of pictures and we exchanged some ideas. She’s going to send me some mockups in a bit. She’s about 4-5 weeks out. So, it’ll be a bit before that gets done.10 points

Good work out for the truck today. Empty, I ran up I-84 eastbound to the state line in Massachusetts and back to the house. Ran with some moderate traffic up I-91 through Hartford to I-84 to Manchester, where the road opens up and traffic gets lighter. Up through Tolland you run into some pretty good grades with rolling terrain and you climb up towards the Mass Pike. The return trip is easier as you're coming down a lot of those grades. The truck did well staying with the traffic. It does fall off a bit on some of the hills, but a quick downshift to 4th, Hi-split will carry you over. It falls off like other naturally aspirated engines do, like my old END-673 I had in the B42. Adding a T590 turbo to make it a 262 would give me a little more Power and torque, but I don't think I'll do that. I ran it pretty hard and put over 120 miles on it, to push it. The drive line is pretty quiet, the compound gearshift rattles kind of loud at certain RPM's. Post test run, the driveline is dry. The rear axle pinion seal may need some attention in the future as it had a little oil on it. Wheel bearings are cool and nothing got hot. The upper tank on the radiator was hot to the touch, but the bottom tank was almost cool. So, it does a really good job losing heat. That was kind of a surprise as I thought it would be pretty warm. The temp gauge was showing about 160* the whole time and really didn't move much, up or down hill. Only one grade caused me to drop two gear, to 4th Direct, but it still kept up with traffic. The good thing is the top couple of gears are so close that the down shifts are effortless. and with no clutch. The clutch does need to be adjusted, again. Some of the free play I had in it tightened up. I just need to keep driving it and and adjusting everything to get it dialed in. Upcoming things for it are a complete alignment check at a nearby shop. When I assembled the frame, I checked all my alignments with a tape measure and had everything within 1/16" to include the toe-in and checked it several time as everything was tightened up. It just needs to be checked for my piece of mind. It holds the road very well, no shimmy, pulls or drift and after 1400 miles I see and feel no obvious wear on the tires. My underbody storage boxes should be in soon. The winch needs to be installed and a cable added. Some electrical work needs to be completed, too. I've got a local sign painter I've contacted about Lettering the doors and a pinstripe job to dress it up a little, but nothing too flashy. It's all coming together and the truck is very comfortable to drive. As I get used to it, my B42 seems smaller every time I drive it. I really love both trucks, but that L cab is a home run for comfort and visibility.10 points
