Scania: Sleeping Giant in Emerging VW Truck Portfolio?
BC Mack replied to kscarbel2's topic in Trucking News
Bullhusk if what you saw was a 143 then I don't doubt those numbers.... the early series 1x0 and 1x1 (the x for engine, 6cyl is 1 and the v8 is 4) were known for their cab worm, as was the Volvo F88/89... to the purist, the Scania 143 was the pinacle of the design and even at 20-30 years old still hold esteem. Scania: Sleeping Giant in Emerging VW Truck Portfolio?
BC Mack replied to kscarbel2's topic in Trucking News
kscarbel the european truck styling heritage is somewhat evident even today.. but go back to the 60/70's and it was so easy to determine a vehicle from a distance... Fiat, Daf, Volvo, Scania, Leyland, ERF, Renault... all were very distinctive as were cars of that era... and most produced their own engines too... none of this assembling other peoples products where only sheet metal made the difference. Cab commonality from suppliers like Motor Panels and the LAD concept started in the late 60's in the UK. I blame the european "club cab" co-operation in the late 70's, all done as an economy drive and when competition heated up in a diminishing market of the early 80's it was hard to know what a truck was if the badges fell off.. was that a Volvo F7 or a Saviem that just went by???? today, with the "white box" mentality they are all starting to blend just like Mercedes and Hundai cars now are too much alike. your concept of a coe cab onto a conventional hooded chassis has been done before by many, again, a cost saving concept for tooling and part minimalisation. the us market is a tough nut to crack... if VW wishes to enter then expect a severe defence to be put up by Daimler and Volvo, perhaps we users may get a better truck in the end, who knows. thanks Bad Dog there are a few "dips" in the double frame but nothing that bothers me... after nearly 10 years of inactivity I'm suprised it is in such reasonable shape. Would have preferred a single frame but the GVW of 63,500kg probably dictated this. I managed to get a calm morning to spray on some Cloverdale Marine Enamel, shiny black... note my well prepared gravel based well ventilated paint shop with custom floor plywood moveable panels...!!! I'm happy so far given my facilities... now to build it back up with new airbags, hoses, maxi's... drums and shoes to be 're-conditioned'.. fifth wheel will receive similar treatment. if only my bus restorations were this easy... should have stuck to trucks when I worked for Mack back in the day!!!! photos added for those who need visual distraction.... there are a few in Ontario too... Legacy Express, Scania 143's I'm not too sure the US market would take to the Longline with XXL cab... even with XXL drivers BC Mack -
Scania: Sleeping Giant in Emerging VW Truck Portfolio?
BC Mack replied to kscarbel2's topic in Trucking News
kscarbel.. this one could get interesting..!! the US market is, as you say, not very profitable but could be seen by VW as "prestigious'... VW have class 8 production in S America with a MAN product iirc, Scania have always sought commonality of production assemblies across their product line, more than Volvo did with their european made trucks. not sure the US is ready for another product line which would dilute market share and products of all makers... a takeover or co-operation with an existing maker with a blended Scania / MAN badged accordingly for market tastes?, maybe. but which sub-market would they go for??? one angle explored by European carmakers such as Mercedes and BMW is the low production and land costs, low wages in TN and fed/state incentives with a lowered dollar to euro is making these two car makers very profitable, shipped US made product back to EU for sale with greater margins... never thought the US would be considered as a low cost manufacturing country!!! I though that is why Romania and Bulgaria were added to the EU partnership.. BC Mack -
Gearhead... thanks for your offer... too many bills this month so going to defer parts for a short while, still plenty of other MH fixing to do at weekends.... it's just a hobby - right? BC Mack

Guys... just wanted to add something that a recent thread discussed... painting a chassis and what products everyone used. I decided to use Corroseal and Cloverdale Paint's Marine Enamel.. anyway, I took a few pics for you, just used the wire wheel and needle gun and slapped on the Corroseal, one coat everywhere and two on the frame where the 5th wheel angle plates were... I've used Sem Rust Seal in the past and figured that Corrosel would behave the same, it did. Small differences, Sem is more runny and doesn't dry as dark... did a little side by side on the frame to get a good comparison. I'm happy so far, painting will be done next week, weather permitting.. photos were taken, I know how picky you guys get if there are no visuals.... cheers BC Mack

Marcel took some measurements of mine (aswell as pics but they're the same as Farmers)... rim of steering wheel to windshield..ranged from 3" to 8" does your's measure the same travel???? BC Mack

Over in the UK, Leyland produced this around 1968.... and it still appears at occasional shows such as Gaydon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDetvPcg3tA more as a proof of concept but I surmise came to the same result as others.. life cycle costs vs. light weight benefit. BC Mack

Gearhead 204 as an outsider looking in from over your northern border.... and not one to get involved in the politics and policies of another sovereign nation... I can only shake my head as I read through this post... not in anger or mockery but in the realisation that this is happening in more countries than the US.... Canada, Britain, Australia et al.... none are immune from this new world order of "government for the corporation".. and I won't bore you with problems "up North" in the most expensive city in Canada owned by offshore 'citizens'... but you are not alone. btw.. wasn't expecting any "likes" but I thought it hit home after reading Mowerman's post... I will politely bow out and let you Americans deal with this situation...!!!! BC Mack

4 MH models AT ritchie brothers auction in Canada for sale
BC Mack replied to Marcel67's topic in Odds and Ends
Marcel... I am so happy to tell you... wrong!!!!!! the E9 MH has joined the collection of the Mack dealer in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC..... I exchanged a few e-mails with the owner and will one day bring mine over to his "gatherings" as it is literally 40 miles away from me but.... a 2hr boat ride.. for a read-up on the collection, and I hope the Gods of internet governance don't come down on me... here is the forum info from our dear friends at Hanks... MH on page 2. http://hankstruckforum.com/htforum/index.php?PHPSESSID=dadnr4is5i3ll2t6gcn8c7gng1&topic=71044.0 and... for the Superliner guys... there's something for you to drool over too... Learnt many years ago when radials started to come into mainstream use... "radials to the rear".. we were starting to mix bias with 'new' radial 900x20, Dunlop/Firestone bias with Michelin radials. so, we were allowed bias front and radial rear combination but not the other way round. all to do with the slip angle of the tire, with radials on the rear there was more oversteer which was deemed more beneficial than the understeer of a front radial. confused... so where we, so we just did what the engineers said until we went 100% radial and later moved onto tubeless 22.5 all regions dot etc will declare that you cannot mix radial and bias on same axle just as you can't mix different sizes unless they are imperial/metric equivalents. Today I can't see any regulation that restricts the placement of bias vs radial front/rear so maybe they were overcautious all those years ago. question.. what do the vintage car guys do??? not in that business but isn't there a tire company, Cooper?, that makes a radial tire that looks like an old bias?? Gearhead204 done "the Coke" many times....!!!! its got to be brutal in a semi in winter though. there's a small town across the border from Osoyoos.. the guy who owns the beer store must be the richest man in WA... once you've seen our beer and gas prices you'll understand why we spend hours in line at the border just to spend money down south. one day buddy, one day. 1958 FWD and 41 Chevy... thanks for the tip... got a lot of info from that site and good prices too. Thanks guys... the frame isn't too rusty just heavy scale residue off the 5th wheel mount. Western Canada is nowhere as dry as Arizona, we call it the Wet Coast for a reason and we have salt addicts at the Dept of Holidays Highways. Vlad, it gets so hot here in summer my igloo melts every year.. going to build a two storey one next time !!! Canadian joke, Eh!! BC Mack

Guys & Gals.... well, I've sat on the fence for over 18 months and I've finally decided that I HAVE to get some work done on restoring the MH... or it will sit and rot. when I bought it two years ago it had not been used since 2004, I gave it the usual tlc, oil & filters, a bath and then the clutch being stuck put me up against a wall. I'm still way deep into my bus project but have decided that since the MH is outside on gravel the trans is not coming out right now, so, I'm going to restore it from the fuel tanks back....... Summer Weekends Project for non rainy days. I don't need to tell you experts what an enemy rust is.....!!!!! I've got the chassis stripped out so I can remove the rust and paint in behind the brackets etc, the x-members will stay. a few pics below... and a few questions from me about finding part numbers... I'm not too keen on walking into the dealer or our local parts shop without first researching the world for part prices, I like shopping locally as long as they don't want my first born as a deposit.... so, those of you with access to part cross-over books can you help me with a few part numbers.. 1993 MH613 E9 Hendrickson Air suspension 1. Bellows... I have tried to cross the numbers on the bags, I checked the Goodyear site and as near as I can figure they are Goodyear 1R12-365 Mack 364SQ28.... can someone verify or correct me. 2. Shocks.... can't find any info on units, they look pretty normal... anyone got a number? 3. Diff transverse radius rod... I just want to replace the boots/seals.. is there a kit available? 4. Rear hub oil seal, 44,000lb.... any part number?? thanks for your help BC Mack
