  1. Now-if I hook up ,say,a 22 foot air brake trailer on a converter(?) and pull it on a pintle hook, would it work differently (regarding GVW)because of having another axle under the front of the trailer? If I don't load my truck to its GVW-could that increase the weight I could put on a big trailer? Just curious-I still don't see a way to pull a trailer any bigger than a little utility flatbed. Dutch and I are looking at ways to lighten the boom and the flatbed up a little more. How long is the air brake endorsement good for? Whats involved in getting one? While I doubt I'll be hooking up an air trailer,if I find a "converter"(is that what they're called?),I might need to eventually. I keep thinking "Jeeze-I have a 20,000 pound GVW on this truck;how can it happen that I can only haul 7,700 pounds now??" Well,if I include a small trailer I can bring it up to about 11,200. That's just short of six tons,at 20 bucke a ton thats 120 bucks. #00 miles to the nearest paying scrap yard, times two is six hundred miles,at 5 miles per gallon is 120 gallons at 2.50/gallon,thats 300 bucks per trip-not quite enough load to pay its own way. Maybe I can find a better price somewhere else.I can't think anymore,I'm gonna go get some sleep. I HATE when I start over-thinking things... later; Speed
  2. Hi Packer-how was your weekend? The highway patrolman mentioned an air brake endorsement, but since my truck is hydraulic with a Hydra-Vac and I won't be pulling any "large" trailers,I doubt I'd need one now. What you said about an aluminum trailer sounds interesting. I know Dutch is chomping at the bit to make something cool out of aluminum,he's getting a welder set up for it. (Maybe I'll let him build me some accessories for the truck with it before I put him to work on a trailer.) I was just running some numbers around, and figuring the boom, the Brownie the PO added, the flatbed and a steel tandem axle utility trailer,I'll be able to haul about 7,500 pounds without hitting my 20,000 pound GVWR. That should cover about anything I'll have a need to do. I'll see if when we build the boom and the flatbed maybe we can shave a little more weitht off. Since I won't be pulling big trailers,I won;t really need a full sized air compressor,a smaller one will do,maybe the A/C compressor set up,just for filling tires, and running the air horns. That'll save some weight. And I can go considerably lighter on the "Bull-basher front bumper Dutch was gonna build for it. HMMMmmm--maybe he can build me some aluminum gas tanks-that'd help. Actually, none of this is that critical though. I doubt I'll be carrying loads heavy enough to be worried about very often, and maybe I'm wrong, but seems to me the law's got a lotta bigger stuff to do than hassle a little guy in an old truck trying to get his stuff from here to there. BTW-the officer told me he'd really like to see my when I get it home, and once I have all dolled up he wants a couple of pics of it to hang in the NHP office here. I thought that was pretty cool. It sounds like the purchase is getting close to done. Man,I'm counting the minutes till I can go after my truck! I'm actually going to hold off a week or so once I have the money,so I can order some very necessary parts for the . Two custom shift knobs,a Bulldog for the grille, some mudflap brackets and 5 color mudflaps and a pair of 6 volt Halogen headlights. The plates for it @ 20,000 lbs will be $262.00 per year. My insurance will be about the same as for my '62 Chevy one ton. I'm only gonna get to make one first impression on Elko with this ,so I wanna do it right! Now,all I have to do is clear out a space in my yard to park the truck. One car I have sold as soon as I find a radiator for it,another one might be sold, and one I need to find an engine for. I might store it until I find a running engine, and if I give my friend Jesse back all the parts he stored here for his '50 chevy truck and cut up that old workbench,I'll have plenty of room for my '62,and I can park the in front of the house! Okay, got that all figured out-now I can sleep. See ya all later! Speed
  3. Hi Joe; I get the GVW and GCW stuff;the problem is that with a GVW of 20,000 and a max. of 26,000,that leaves me 5,999 for a trailer and its load without a CDL. If the CDL wasn't the issue I'd have no problem loading it to the GCW,which would be a pretty good load for that old beasie. But I have to keep my total under the 26,000 pound limit. Speed
  4. Chris; I'd like to get my CDL,but it's not a possibility,at least not a full boad CDL. I'm insulin dependent Brittle Diabetic, and the only CDL I could qualify for would be provisional, restricting me to operating only within Nevada . There are other restrictions which wouldn't relate to me,but this particular one would seriously hamper me. To qualify,my doctor has to sign a statement saying my blood glucose level has been in good control for a year continuously. That is not possible,as my glucose level can change rather suddenly. I've learned to stop and take care of it before it becomes an issue, but my doctor can't guarantee that'll always be the case. My only option,as I see it,is to do what I'm planning to do,and just run a smaller, lighter and not run commercially. I'm okay with that,I'll only have to make more trips to move the stuff I want to move ,and I have plenty of things that truck will be just the right size for. Speed
  5. Hi all! Well,I went to the Nevada Highway Patrol's Elko office today to learn a little about GVWRs and what I'll be legal to haul with my without a CDL. After asking about a million questions,I've narrowed it down to this: my truck has a 20,000 pound GVWR,so theoretically I can only pull a trailer rated for about 5,000 pounds, accounting for the approximate weight of the Brownie and the added on 5th wheel plate. I figure any trailer I could hook to that 5th wheel would weight in at about 5,000 or more,so trailer pulling is pretty much out of the formula now .(except for the occasional car hauler/flatbed.)The NHP Sargent suggested my getting an endorsement for pulling a trailer with over 10,000 pound weight rating, but the cat over in drivers licencing said that won't help me-the can't be operated with a trailer without a CDL-end of discussion. So,my plans now are to register the truck on a declared weight of 25,000 pounds,at about $322.00 per year, remove the 5th wheel and build a flatbed for the truck, which will make it as it was intended to be from the factory. I'm still going to have my brother Dutch build me a monster boom for it,and we're discussing a little creative work, like building a rollback or dump flatbed for it,maybe building a flatbed from Aluminum,or installing a liftgate on it. Lots to consider here. I'm kinda reserving judgement on what I'll be able to haul,I'm figuring the bed will be 15 feet long by 8 foot two inches wide, minus about 9 square feet for the boom. Figuring out what the boom and the flatbed will weigh is gonna be the hard part. sort of a wait-and-see-what-happens deal. Regarding the purchase of my ,the current owner is waiting on me to finish paying for the truck,I'm waiting on a friend to finish paying for my Triumph, and he's waiting on his friend to pay for a van he just brought from Minnesota,at great personal expense.(It broke a brake drum, lost both duals off the right side, got towed,he bought another drum and studs/lugnuts,wheel wouldn't fit over the drum, ran it on just the outside dual, broke 4 studs, got a used drum which also didn't fit,but he managed to get home with it. I'll be helping him find parts and get it assembled right so he can get paid,so I can get paid,so the 's owner can get paid...It'll all work out though. Speed I just did some quick figuring, and unless I'm hauling Gold ingots,I probably won't be able to make this truck pay for it's own gas.
  6. For what it's worth,I found these numbers for those of us who don't care for champion plugs: Champion-D-16 Autolite-386 AC-C87 NGK-A-6 Denso-L14U Bosch-M10ACO Bosch Platinum-??-still looking Speed
  7. If you go with the historic or Antique tags, isn't there a pretty low limit on how many miles you can drive it per year, and what you can use it for? I'm not sure how things will shake out with my EH,it's only showing a 20K GVWR,but I fully intend to drive it frequently, and if I can use it to make a few bucks I will. I'm hoping plates for the will be around the same as for my ol' 66 Chevy C-60 were. Speed
  8. Not 100% sure but I'm shooting for around March 10th. Maybe sooner if the money comes through sooner. I'll have to sell my car too,to have enough money to get the truck and get some work done on it before I bring it home. I did the math on it,and I'll be spreading it pretty thin without the car sale;probably won't be able to get the shift knobs or mudflaps I wanted, to make a grand entrance when I get home, would have to go with painted mirrors instead of stainless, standard headlight bulbs instead of Halogens,. I was planning to sell my Fairmont wagon anyway. That'll bring me up to where I'll be able to get the accessories I want, all the service items I'll need for it,and the materials to build a hella-big knuckle boom for it,and hopefully get an air compressor pump for it before I head back to Elko in it. Anybody out there need an economy car? Speed

  12. Thanks Andy;and you're doing great work as the registry administrator !! Few of us have the stones to even pick up the gauntlet of leadership,so that puts you up the scale a good ways right out of the gate! Your efforts are very much appreciated. I'm sure we'll all learn a lot from the registry and this website, and have fun doing it. BTW-my uncle came this close(I--I) to starting a cattle ranch in Australia in the late 60's-early 70's. I don't know exactly why he didn't-he even took the whole family over on a vacation to look the place over.He loved it-the wife and kids said they'd get used to it...I think he decided to stay in Washington state until the kids were out of school, and by that time his money was committed to another business. Some day I'd like to go over and check it out,but that'll take way more "disposable income" than I think I'll ever have. Speed
  13. Hi Andy; Thanks for the confirmation. I'd thought I sent my info to the E Registry string up at the top,so you can disregard my last message up there. I'm kinda puzzled about the title for my truck. I'm told it says this is a 1940 truck, not a 1945,but the ID number is still correct. All I can figure is that maybe it was actually made in 1940 and wasn't sold or delivered until 1945. Is this possiblle? Or maybe a mis-print on the title. I drove my '51 ford F-5 for 4 years before I realized the Motor Vehicles Dept. had titled it as a half ton,and not as a ton-and-a-half. (That explains why my insurance was so cheap!) I doubt this year snafu would cause me any trouble unless something related to a difference in parts or assembly of parts from one to the other year came up. Is there a break down of the VIN,I'd be interested to know what each character represents in the VIN. I can guess the last 4 are the number of the truck. I know on my GMC I can tell where it was built, manufacture number sequence, whether it was a V-8 or a six, half or 3/4 ton, etc. from the VIN. Speed
  14. Hey,Andy; Did you get my info on my EH? I'm sure I sent it,but I don't see the message,so maybe the internet ate it. Let me know if you need me to re-send it. Thanks! Speed
  15. I don't wanna hijack this thread, just borrow it for a minute. Is the Rotella 15/40 good for the Mack gas engines too? Thanks! James

  17. Hi Greg; No problem-good to hear from you again. YEP-that's like the pattern in mine! My build sheet shows mine having a direct 5th though. That's why I'm assuming the Brownie the PO installed will show to be an overdrive unit. The mileage doesn't look as good as I'd hoped for,but is about what I'd expected,so it's cool. Out here mileage is kind of a big deal because there are a lot of stretches of highway where I'd run out of gas between towns if I didn't keep a close watch on things and carry a few gallons extra. Looks like about 90 to 100 miles range,so going to Reno I'd be running on fumes from Lovelock into Reno! (I could coast down the hills, but there aren't any "coastable" hills in that area. Well,I can probably milk a couple of mpg more out of 'er if I drive gentle and keep the go pedal off the floor. I'm resolving myself to about a 50 mph cruise speed even with the overdrive. (That's not too far off the cruise speed of my old Chevy one ton-it's good for about 65 mph before things start un-adjusting. I still need to check into some of the rules regarding weight limits, personal vs.commercial use,and when a CDL is actually required. The CDL is only an issue for me because I'm insulin dependent Diabetic. Since my truck is for personal use only, and my trailer will probably have a pick up camper on the front of it,it could be considered an RV,couldn't it? As I understand the law,RV's don't require a CDL. If it comes down to needing a CDL to drive my Mack, there's a way I can get a provisional CDL by presenting a statement from my doctor stating my blood glucose level has been under good control for a year. The down side of this is that it's only valid in Nevada,I can't haul Haz-Mat and I can't haul people.(No bus driving) The Nevada only bit is the hard part for me,since I'd like the option of hauling scrap metal to Utah to sell off,or going into Idaho for an old car or building materials for my home. I guess I'll have to see how this all shakes out. Speed
  18. Okay Andy; What do I need to do to get into the registry, and what's the main purpose of it? And Thanks!-I'm really looking forward to putting that old back on the road, even if it is in the private sector. Speed
  19. Thanks Joe;I wondered about the shift pattern on the 5 speeds. The more I think about it,the more I think this truck has the correct 5 speed in it. Apparently they have an "oddball" shift pattern compared to the typical GM or Ford med. duty 5 speeds. I see in the build sheet my truck came with a 5 speed, and single speed rear axle. It now has a 3 speed Brownie also, and I'm guessing it'd be an overdrive box;I'll have to get the numbers off the tag and look it up. The idea for using A/C compressors came from a friend of mine who used one on his F-700 for road service work, just for running an air wrench or an air drill. He wired the clutch on it to a toggle switch at first, and eventually set it up with hi and lo pressure switches. The A/C compressor has worked great for his purpose for over 20 years without problems. I don't think it'd flow enough volume for me to feel confident in it in powering trailer brakes and air horns though,so I'm tossing that idea. I'll try the local wrecking yard for a more proper compressor, and once I get it all fitted and connected I'll shop for a recon if it needs one. Speed
  20. Hi Joe; Thanks for the info. I was told earlier this truck should probably have a Tu-Flow 400 on it,or at least that's the comparable unit for it now. I found some of 'em factory reconned on Ebay;not sure what the going rate will be,but I did notice that they all looked like they were gear-driven. Is there an adapter to run them off an external belt, and where would I find a pulley for one? I don't remember seeing any open mounting flanges on the enginefor the internally driven type, but the factory picture shows an internally driven compressor. Maybe mine's been converted to an externally driven model compressor.(more flexibility of applications?) There does seem to be a bracket on the upper right area of the engine that appears to be for a compressor. I've considered making a mounting plate that would carry two Ford,or maybe Chrysler V-twin A/C compressors plumbed together, feeding into a good sized air tank ,but I'm not sure they'd make enough volume to feed the trailer brakes in traffic or in tight maneuvering situations where frequent brake applications would be needed. If I can find the correct parts,I'd be better off using the right compressor for the job. I think the gas engine will work out fine for my use, since I don't anticipate much,if any, over the road hauling of more than 100 miles or so each way,and no really heavy loads. I'd be hauling stuff for my own use-building materials, vehicles, scrap metal, etc. and the occasional "help a friend" kinds of things that come up. As far as the size loads,I would probably rely a little more on the trailer braking than usual, but at the sedate speeds I'd be going,I don't feel brakes would be overworked except for,as I said, heavy traffic or close quarters jockeying around. Have you had a chance to notice your average gas consumption yet? I'd really like to know what to expect for mileage. And what transmission does your rig have? If it's the straight five speed, what's the shift pattern on it? Dude-I'm goin' nuts! I wanna get my truck home and start workin' on it!! And I have decided I WILL need a set of shift knobs and mud flaps, and a Bulldog for the radiator shell. I just can't move the truck without that stuff in place-it'd be SACRILLEGE!!(sp?) Speed
