Trans questions
doubleclutchinweasel replied to wingman's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Any air valve should trigger the splitter, like Superdog said. It just has to be plumbed in properly, or else it might work backward! A TRD-72 SHOULD be a 10-speed Duplex, direct drive. That is, 5th gear should be direct (1:1). For a 9-speed, which is an overdrive model, it SHOULD be a TRD-720. The "0" generally means high gear is overdrive. But, I have heard folks argue over whether they had a 9 or 10. Every 9-speed I ever saw was an overdrive. But, hey! We ARE talking about Mack here! Anything is possible! The "72" is the basic 5-speed box. It could be coupled with a 2-speed rear section for a Duplex (TRD), a 3-speed rear section for a Triplex (TRT), or a 4-speed rear section for a Quadruplex (TRQ). There are also variations on the basic numbers, indicating different gear ratios and torque capabilities (like a TRQ-720, TRQ-7210, or TRQ-7220, indicating 3 different versions of a Quadruplex). Direct drive setups typically have as many gears as it appears (5 X 3 = 15 or 5 X 4 = 20). But, when you add the overdrive 5th gear, some of the combinations are duplicated, so they discount those (5 X 3 = 13 or 5 X 4 = 18, where a couple of the gear ratios are essentially the same). On an 18-speed, for instance, LO-SPLIT 5th is essentially the same as DIRECT 4th, and DIRECT 5th is essentially the same as HI-SPLIT 4th, So, those two don't really count. They're there...I've used 'em. You just need to not down-shift or "nothing-shift" by accident! Nice thing about the TRQ-720 overdrive Quadruplex (or equivalent TRT-720 Triplex) is that you get 2 overdrives (HI-SPLIT 4th and HI-SPLIT 5th)! Enough jibberish? Sorry! Here are some shift plates. The 10-speed and 15-speed shown are DIRECT models. The 18 is an OVERDRIVE model. -
The car changed at the end of Dirty Mary & Crazy Larry, too.

And, of course, there was always T.J. Hooker holding on to the hood of the car! That's about as bad as it gets!

I've never been out there. But, I remember somebody posted a fast-forward video of the road, set to take the same time as the song. I don't recall seeing a low bridge either. Is that what we call "poetic license"?

Ah, yes! The C! Introduced in '63, I believe. Not a bad idea...short BBC. Good engine options. Might have lasted longer if the U & R hadn't come out in '65. The U was aimed pretty much at the same market, I believe. Still, seeing a C in person is pretty cool. It's just plain different! Does have some interesting character.

Weird. I found it just the other day. Guess they pulled it! So, just for that... Wolf Creek Pass (Bill Fries, Chip Davis) Me an' Earl was haulin' chickens on a flatbed out of Wiggins, and we'd spent all night on the uphill side of thirty-seven miles of hell called Wolf Creek Pass. Which is up on the Great Divide? We was settin' there suckin' toothpicks, drinkin' Nehi and onion soup mix, and I said, "Earl, let's mail a card to Mother then send them chickens on down the other side. Yeah, let's give 'em a ride." [Chorus] Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide Truckin' on down the other side Well, Earl put down his bottle, mashed his foot down on the throttle, and then a couple'a boobs with a thousand cubes in a nineteen-forty-eight Peterbilt screamed to life. We woke up the chickens. Well, we roared up offa that shoulder sprayin' pine cones, rocks, and boulders, and put four hundred head of them Rhode Island reds and a couple a' burnt-out roosters on the line. Look out below; 'cause here we go! Well, we commenced to truckin' and them hens commenced to cluckin' and then Earl took out a match and scratched his pants and lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar and took a puff. Says "My, ain't this purdy up here." I says, "Earl, this hill can spill us. You better slow down or you gonna kill us. Just make one mistake and it's the Pearly Gates for them eight-five crates a' USDA-approved cluckers. You wanna hit second?" [Chorus] Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide Truckin' on down the other side Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter and he stabbed her into fifth gear and then the chromium-plated, fully-illuminated genuine accessory shift knob come right off in his hand. I says, "You wanna screw that thing back on, Earl?" He was tryin' to thread it on there when the fire fell off a' his cigar and dropped on down, sorta rolled around, and then lit in the cuff of Earl's pants and burned a hole in his sock. Yeah, sorta set him right on fire. I looked on outta the window and I started countin' phone poles, goin' by at the rate of four to the seventh power. Well I put two and two together, and added twelve and carried five; come up with twenty-two thousand telephone poles an hour. I looked at Earl and his eyes was wide, his lip was curled, and his leg was fried. And his hand was froze to the wheel like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard. I says, "Earl, I'm not the type to complain; but the time has come for me to explain that if you don't apply some brake real soon, they're gonna have to pick us up with a stick and a spoon." Well, Earl rared back, and cocked his leg, stepped as down as hard as he could on the brake, and the pedal went clear to the floor and stayed there, right there on the floor. He said it was sorta like steppin' on a plum. Well, from there on down it just wasn't real purdy: it was hairpin county and switchback city. One of 'em looked like a can full'a worms; another one looked like malaria germs. Right in the middle of the whole damn show was a real nice tunnel, now wouldn't you know? Sign says clearance to the twelve-foot line, but the chickens was stacked to thirteen-nine. Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred-and-ten, like gas through a funnel and eggs through a hen, and we took that top row of chickens off slicker than scum off a Lousiana swamp. Went down and around and around and down 'til we run outta ground at the edge of town. Bashed into the side of the feed store... in downtown Pagosa Springs. I'm sorry! Let me apologize up front. I just couldn't help myself... ...Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter and he stabbed her into fifth gear and then the chromium-plated, fully-illuminated genuine accessory shift knob come right off in his hand. Jim Rockford! Oh, yeah! One of my favorite series. Hey, Jim's dad, Rocky, was a retired trucker! Couldn't be all bad. Even tolerated the one where the equipment thieves were stealing the "D8 Cat"...which looked more like a 450 John Deere, or something.

If it actually has an alternator, not a generator, a defective diode in the rectifier circuit will also cause this. -
I was JUST thinking about that episode! Sonny claimed that the truck would not start. So, he and Will took the turbo off, pretending to try to find the problem. Then, they broke one vane off the impeller, to show there was a problem. Apparently, truck hi-jackers have no mechanical savvy! Then, Sonny (I believe) pretended to have difficulty holding the piece in place to weld it back on, and asked his captor to help him hold it still. When the bad guy came over to help him, he got wallopped! I had to call B.S. on the welding of the impeller...and I was like 12 or 13 at the time! I remembered wondering if anybody was really that gullible! Oh...memories...

The valve on my brake pedal gets stuck
doubleclutchinweasel replied to Marcel67's topic in Air Systems and Brakes
The pivot pin on my R is frozen in the aluminum base, and pivots on the pedal...which is exactly backwards from the way it is supposed to be! But, it is quite free and causes no problem. I periodically spray it down with PB and tap on it, hoping it will free-up one day. At some point, I will need to replace the foot valve. Not being able to get the pin out makes it almost impossible to remove one of the retaininf nuts, which makes it pretty difficult to get the valve off the treadle plate. I really figure that I'll wind up having to replace the whole assembly since I can't get it apart the "right way". But, I'll continue the PB/tapping regimen until the last possible moment. That stuff will surprise you sometimes! By the way, the old manuals actually tell you to pull the rubber boot up and lube the plunger periodically. Normal maintenance. -

What he said on the plunger.P.B. Blaster on the pivot pin? (Keep it out of the plunger) -
Actually, they are in area 61B.There are also some in area 41B, area 83B, and a couple in area 75B. These were in the optional material "unobtanium". I also heard an unsubstantiated rumor of some odd-ball cabs in area 600R. These were in the even-rarer optional material "bull-shitium". If you find these, please put me down for 1.

When I access BMT on my mobile device, it always tries to go to the "mobile" version of the website. I don't really mind this, as most mobile versions are geared toward running well on a mobile device. But, I just can't find a link to "my content", like there is under your user name on the "full" version. So, I keep going back to the full version, simply because it makes it easier to find my conversations. I noticed that there IS a menu on the moble site. And, it has several potentially useful links on it...but no "my content" link. Any way we could get that function added under the mobile menu? Or, does anybody know where that function is? I might be missing it somewhere!

This one was in (I believe) Denver, CO for several years before Brad bought it. One was destroyed in filming. The other, (I believe it was the shorter wheelbase) was, I believe, repainted and went on to do...something else.I would have loved to have driven this thing...just once!

Excessive? Is there any such thing? Well, I guess there could be. But, I don't recall actually seeing them. Hey, I think this post is back on track!!! -
C'mon guys! Vinny doesn't deserve that! I mean, he already has to worry about his current U-model falling over. He doesn't need to worry about his image & appearance too! Sorry V. I kid because I care!

Here are a couple of pics to show the numbers... Look between the slotted plug on the fuel pump drive and the reservoir for the PS fluid. You can see the engine number in the pic. The frame one is easy. The front axle number should be stamped on the front axle beam, just below the RH spring perch. Maybe something like FA 534, or something.
