  1. The RD is actually a different model. An R could be ordered single or double framed. I suppose they would do a triple if you wanted! I've seen triple walled B80's.The cone shaped hub is indicative of a double splined axle. This axle shaft is splined on both ends. The hub in not attached to the axle. The hub is splined to mate to the axle. These are great axles. A 44K could be either flat hub (integral) or coned (splined). Some guys say the number of bolts in the hub indicate the size, but I'm not positive. The numbers off the axle housing or build sheet are better indicators.
  2. Uhhhh.....That one needs just a little work!
  3. The double frame is an option. It wouldn't show up in the serial number.
  4. "Work" is a 4-letter word, ending in "K", describing an activity one should not be seen doing in public, and should not be uttered in polite company...
  5. A little more info... If I recall correctly, the "86" means the engine was the ENDT 676 Maxidyne, which I THOUGHT was the 285HP version. Of course, I might be looking too far back. Maybe by '79, it was a 300 (EM6-300?). As Vinny stated, the "S" means "tandem" (Six sets of wheels). Also, the "T" means it was originally built as a "Tractor". If originally equipped as a "platform" truck, it would have been an R686S, for instance. Somebody want to add to that engine bit?
  6. Oh! Now I got one! Have your asses a Happy New Year! (I knew there was one there somewhere...)
  7. Huh! I didn't know that either! I went in there. But, it was like Rodney Dangerfield said about the first time he had sex..."I was all alone!"
  8. Huh...huh...huh! He said "Hosed"!!!
  9. Uhh....Hmm.....Ahh.... I got nothin'!!! Happy New Year to you. too!
  10. Now, that's pretty deep! And, it's an excellent point. Sometimes, things do happen for a reason. I DID pass up several old Macks before I got this one. And, some were much nicer. But, I have really enjoyed working on mine. It may never be as nice as some of the ones I passed up. But, it is uniquely MINE! So, again, excellent point!
  11. I'm sorry. Did you mean to add a link to this post?
  12. I've never regretted buying something I really wanted. But, I do regret some things I talked myself out of! And, the worst is watching someone else walk away with what I wanted...because they would pay what I wouldn't! Ouch!
  13. And, let's not forget our friends at Volvo, who abandoned the very elegant part numbering system Mack people had known and used for years in favor of their "global" numbering system which means........nothing, as far as I can see!
  14. It's not much of a movie. But it has Dogs in it.
  15. Well, darn! Can't find Brad's website. Hope everything is okay with him.
  16. On Brad's website, there is a good write-up on the building of the KW. After a couple of years of digging & research, there's still debate "out there" as to whether Brad's Pete is "truck 2" or "truck 3" from Duel. I've found pretty compelling information that it is #2, which is the truck used to film a couple of scenes that were added to the theatrical release of the movie. The truck HAS been modified since then. Some say it is #3, which was not used in the film. But, I am pretty sure #3 was a shorter-wheelbase truck, which was later re-painted & used elsewhere in movies. Doesn't matter one way or the other...it's still just super cool!
  17. Anybody ever see "Alaska Passage?" Starring...B-model Macks!
  18. I've also seen multi-speed boxes torn to shreds by a Maxidyne. Look at the torque ratings...the old boxes just weren't built to take that much torque. It mainly depends on how you load & drive them. If running a Maxi hooked to a Quad, for instance, don't let the Maxi lug down into that maximum torque zone. Treat it like a Thermo, & keep the rpm up in the 18-2100 range. The torque up there is more in line with a Thermo. And, you're right; a 5-6 speed is just too widely spaced to run behind a Thermodyne without ridiculously low gearing.
  19. Yep. That's the classic Mack setup. And you don't have to wait long to shift...especially if you split all the ones you can!
  20. The old R is painted in the scheme I want to put on mine! Glad to see a picture of one of those.
