  1. The pop off on mine was not the typical big external model. It looked just like a pipe plug, til I unscrewed it and saw the spring on the inside. This is an aluminum tank. I have a couple steel tanks and they have no pop off valves? I rechecked mine this morning and it was not down at all from yesterday, so I think I found what was wrong(loose drain plug and maybe the pop off). I have a few new pop off valves so I'll replace the original.
  2. Does your tank have a pop off? I just realized mine did and think that was my leak. I plugged it and retesting. I also found the drain plug was a bit loose too.
  3. Dad took me to Illinois museum when I was about 12? Here two pics from yesterday:
  4. Yesterday I took advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime. The Midwest Railway Preservation Society offers "drive a train" and I took them up. Pay a fee and get an hour behind the throttle of there vintage long hood RS-3 similar to this: What I was told about the Alco RS3, was the fact it was a long hood, was it was one of the first diesels and the long hood mimic's a steam engine. Pretty much all the later stuff were short hoods(like GP's and SD's) Due to circumstances beyond my control I was given the benefit of playing longer then typical. The other gentlemen that was doing it was a 95 yr old WWII veteran. It was pretty cold out and he didn't stay on for the entire time limit. The engineer offered me more play time if I wanted to? Well, HELL YA!!! We were hooked to a tank car and was dragging it up and down an access track for their property(off CSX rail yard in Cleveland). Pretty cool to play with I must say. After the veteran was helped off the engine I asked if my g/f could ride(typically that is not allowed), but was told "that's okay". Karen hopped on and we played some more until it was time to put things away. The engineer took the controls and we shuffled some cars around and put things back were they started from and then rode back into the roundhouse. About 3 hours worth! I have been familiar with the organization for a few years, but never joined. I joined and hope to make some time to actually volunteer to work on the equipment. They own and are restoring the 4070 that used to pull the cars for the Cuyahoga Valley Line. I rode behind it back in the early 80's?(and still have a badge from it somewhere). www.midwestrailway.org
  5. I just put a kit in my Sealco 14900 valve. Kit #109-5. Mine lost air in hours, it seems better now, only dropping a few pounds over night. I hope it is just the cold(it's 45 in the garage). I'll check it later today to see if it is holding steady. I plugged the tank using a gauge in one fitting and a air line fitting in the other with a 1/4 turn ball valve. I'd like to put a balloon on the output side of the starter valve to determine if it is still leaking. I want to make sure it is pretty tight before I get all this stuff installed on the truck.
  6. Ya. All this shiny stuff to blend in with the rust! I got the valve rebuilt this morning and aired the tank. I tried the valve using my blow gun. Wow....that makes a hell of a bang of air out the hole!! Guess it works. I will check back tonight to see if it is holding pressure.
  7. Well, I now have an aluminum air tank, thanks to Mark. I have my brackets getting powder coated. I aired the tank up to see how it held. It leaked down pretty fast so I picked up a renew kit for the valve today and I'll get that assembled and retest the tank this weekend. I'm pretty sure it should be okay now. I also ordered an air push button to operate the valve. Never guess how hard those are to come by these days. Cross truck didn't have it, Freightliner didn't have it, Mack didn't have one. I ended up back at Freightliner as they seemed to be the most responsive about actually wanting to order it for me. The lady behind the counter was actually "giddy" about air starters. She says every time she watches Maximum Overdrive she has to rewind it a couple times when the old White wrecker starts!!! I told her I know the movie well. I might have to drive the truck down and let her hear it once I get it put on this summer. I ordered my new fuel tanks the other day from Alumitank, so I will be getting those mid next week also. If/when I get the brackets back from powdercoat(man, he sure is slowwwwww). I ordered a polishing kit and a 5.3hp Dewalt grinder to shine the fuel tanks and the alum starter tank. Not that I'm looking forward to that mess, but I can't wait to see them on the truck all shined up.
  8. My local mack dealer parts guy was talking about seeing your truck online as we talked about my truck. I mentioned you were on this site. I then got curious as to your range and by chance you posted this pictures. Are you buying these battery packs from wrecked cars? Or new? Can I ask what they get for them? I've heard horror stories about Prius' and spending thousands of dollars to replace the batteries.
  9. Wow, that is quite a powerplant. What is the expected range? With all that power, what kind of safety precautions are in place against possible electrical issues? One little short could really ruin ones day.
  10. Or just lots of sludge??? Looks like some nasty black stuff/lube in the bottom.
  11. My garage is narrower. I have to pull in my drivers mirror, then weazel the passenger side mirror in, then straighten up. I'm guessing it is a std 96" wide garage door opening? The rear fenders have 3-4" on each side? (I pulled it in when I started to stretch it. I typically back in)
  12. Ya, I had my "chauffeurs" license back in 1986? Just a written test and I had it. I let it lapse when the CDL came around because I didn't need it then. Then about 15 yrs later I have to start from scratch> Go figure. Lucky I didn't have to take any schools, just the tests.
  13. 300 Plus................hmmm, that'd make the ol B model fly!!!! I kinda understand the "V8" look, but how about just dolling up the 300? Some chrome and polish? If you are just looking for eye candy when opening the hood. Not that I wouldn't just love to take that 300 off your hands. (I need to find me a tip turbine)
  14. I can watch those movies, over and over and over........ And NO, I'm not kidding, Shirley.
  15. Okay, thanks guys. I didn't think he would give me the wrong ones, but was curious before I put them on. They have always been $8 at the dealership. That's a hell of a bargain in my eyes.
  16. 21939324 was number I used on 673. This filter is 21939298. Both are listed as full flow. You cant beat $8 each at Mack. An fl1a for my cars is near that and 1/3 the size.
  17. Ok, I was at local dealer getting o-rings for filter housing that started leaking. I asked for 2 filters and he handed me these. It is not the same part number I used to run on set up I ran on 673 spin on. Is there different variations?
  18. When I put the air steering on my B, my wheel was out of whack and I couldn't two hand shift it because the spoke was in the way. Loosen nut, put knees under the wheel and push up. Take a whack at the shaft(or use an air hammer like me). Presto, wheel comes off.
  19. I remember my test. The girl testing must have liked me?? Told me I only had to do ONE side of the truck on the pre-trip. "The other side is just a duplicate". Well, okay then. I had like 15 extra minutes in the cab to chat as the timer ran out. I forget what the time limit is? It is one of those nerve racking tests, for sure. Once done, you realize it isn't all that bad. I rented their truck so it was much easier on me to not worry about if the truck would pass pre trip.
  20. No, I already have a 60 gal and with only a single stage pump it takes too much to fill that. I should have stepped up to a two stage pump. Oh well, it works well enough for what I do.
  21. Two weeks and still 80#. Got an alum tank coming though.......
  22. Price? What's all included on the Mack stuff? Valve cover spacer? Turbo spacer?
  23. Potatoe, potato? Soda or Pop?
  24. Likely a 392. Yowza, I bet that is THIRSTY!!!! My 345 in my '72 pickup was bad enough, can't imagine with that truck.
  25. Friend had one with a NTC in it. Was an old ANR truck, with the red/blue stripe through the middle. Short single axle, he put a dump bed on it.
