Wow...looking great. You got luckier with your axles then when I swapped gearsets on the frame section I bought for my truck. I spent a good afternoon with 20# sledge, heat, chisels and the like to get the axles out. Ugh. "Just tap it with a hammer" they said. "it will come right out" they said. Ya, right LOL!!! -
Well I got it back yesterday. Got it stuck on late last night and started it. Sounds okay. Going to take for a spin tonight and test it out. Was told the thrust bearing was kinda rough from "material" that ran through oil. Don't know, the engine was a real unkown factor. The shaft is definitely looser to spin then before so I think the bearings might have been a bit snug? He mentioned it was a bit carboned up and if it was a firetruck that might be true do to the fact it sat around and idled a lot.

Ah crap!!! I've learned........I'm bigger, so I hold my course when in the Mack. Looks like the truck faired okay. Glad it wasn't worse. Had some young dumb broad about side swipe me a week ago coming back from Indiana. I was in the company car(Honda) and lucky it handles good as if I was in my pickup and tried that stunt I would have been in a world of hurt. That Honda zig-zagged right around the idiot as she tried to occupy the same lane on the highway...without looking. Lucky no one was in third lane. Still pisses me off thinking about it today. Looks like the Mack is sitting on a 1 ton motorhome chassis of some sorts.

Local VFW has a cheap breakfast still. Like $2.50 for 2 eggs, toast, bacon and coffee(I'd get tea). Buddy's used to meet there on the weekends before we took our motorcycle ride.

Ya, the bridge surely has a good dip in it. Makes you wonder about where the high spot is actually at. I've seen bridges here in Ohio where it has a sign at the highest point to let you know. I've always seen where they were just putting a top coat on the roadbed and they actually cut it down under the bridge to maintain the clearance, Clarence. Roger, roger, what's our vector Victor. (LOL..sorry, one of my favorite lines from Airplane).

I've been leary of going by scales when they say "all trucks". When it said "commercial trucks" I didn't. I don't want to be the guy they chase down and get an azz reamin' on the side of the road. Now, granted the truck looks old enough to not worry. I understand when you have something later model(even an R) where they would still question you running it commercially.

Seems very few people know about peanut butter on pancakes. Ummmm, to die for!!! Adds a touch of sweetness and it also keeps them from getting too soggy from syrup. Same thing with french toast. Ya, I've worked pretty hard not becoming "Big Larry"............
-
I used to make pancakes as big as the skillet would hold. 6-8-10 or more, whatever the batter would make. Big swatch of peanut butter between each one. Not so much anymore....LOL! I used to get a triple order of French toast at Bob Evans too. Ya, not in the last 10 yrs. For some reason I can't burn up all them calories anymore?

By the looks of the digger, they could have saved about a foot in height if they had curled the bucket under. They might have run out of room with the other piece of equipment in front of it? Apparently they don't have the same chain laws like the US. I know we have to have at least one chain on the stick. Don't they usually have it turned around the other way also? I'm sure some construction guys will know the rules.

Ya, looked at mine too. Just to be sure.

Mine has a sleeve between the arm and the shaft. Makes it kinda difficult to get good "teeth" into either. Not sure why it is that way but like I mentioned it came off my 673. I tapped it on every so gingerly. Don't know what I could damage if it pounded too hard? I have a very serious return spring so it always gets back to idle. I'm thinking of converting it to some kind of spring tension throttle. That way I know it is WOT, but won't damage the pump from pulling too hard on it with a solid linkage.

Tandem axle trailer or tandem trailers(like california doubles?). -
Well, got the turbo dropped off Friday afternoon. They looked at it, it doesn't look terminal. They are going to give it the once over, new bearings/seals, check balance on shaft, etc. Should have it back mid week. I tinkered around yesterday with the pump. I re-evaluated the linkage and checking WOT. Seems maybe I found the issue. I think the arm on the pump had slipped ever so slightly as I blocked the pedal down to the stop and pulled the bolt from the arm on the pump and I could move it just about 1/8" more. Hmmmm. I readjusted the clip on the end of the arm to pull it to match up with pump at WOT. I had to install that arm on the pump from my motor as it was missing. I didn't want to pound it one, but got it on about 3/4 of the way and snugged it up. I think it just slipped a touch, so I re-snugged the pinch bolt. We will see this weekend after I get it back together. I know the fact that it only takes just a touch of missing throttle actuation to cause issues with boost/power.

Ya...for nothing more then sitting on a surfboard with a motor in your lap....that's gett'n it.

I know a young family that bought a house in town, then some how some "lost" paperwork came to be that it was "in a flood plain" and their insurance was STUPID. So much they couldn't even afford to live there. Seems someone, somewhere lost the paper and they bought the house unknowing. After a long fight they were bought out and they moved to another location. That area hadn't seen any kind of water in more then the 50 yrs I've been around. Didn't matter, there was a natural waterway under that area and that is what they use to determine the flood plain. It was beyond crazy, like $1000/month for insurance. Have a friend that bought a nice house, went to put up a large garage in the back yard. While the holes were being dug a gas company truck just happen to pass. He quickly stopped and pulled in and told them they better not build that garage. Seems again, somebody, somewhere along the line lost the gas easement paperwork. Seems they had a 24" high pressure line running directly under their backyard. Oops. As they say..."that's when the fight started". He is quite upset to not be able to do anything in his backyard. -
Another Big Mack for sale

New R model owner
Freightrain replied to Denis in MI's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Welcome to the forums. Pretty solid looking truck for a Michigan unit. Nice friend! You can send/email your VIN to the Mack museum and they will make up a package for you that will include the build sheet and even a manual among other trinkets. A donation is always a good thing after you receive your information. Might take a few weeks or so to get it. I'm guessing it has a 237/5spd in it? I'm not good with motor numbers, but looking at the air cleaner that is my guess. -
Single-axle tractors
Freightrain replied to sodly's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
A single axle box truck with a pintle hitch(or ball) would/could be a handful if the weight is improperly set on the trailer. Just like a pickup with a heavy trailer. A single axle tractor isn't very heavy on the rear by itself, maybe 4-5K lbs at the most. That gives you 18K more to put on that axle itself. A 45ft trailer, even with two trucks isn't putting 18K on the tractor. Two trucks might be 20-sumthin thousand pounds. Split that between the trailer and truck and that is only 10K sum pounds on the rear axle of the truck. Since the weight of the trailer is directly OVER the axle, there is no squirm like a ball hitch. -

I see both sides of this. Yes, help when you can SAFELY do it. Then there is the other group that just dives in head first and creates more disasters. You see it all the time where the rescuer is needing rescued because "they" took it upon themselves to do more then they could handle. Yes, driving around in a boat is not a huge deal. But there are always circumstances that can arise. You have to be smart about it. With the "sue happy" world we live in you have to think before you jump. -
I contacted a local turbo shop. They can take care of it. Going to try to get it dropped off Friday afternoon and see what they think. They say 3-5 days if all goes well. Not sure if I will have them do it now or wait til after Sept 10-11 as I need the truck that weekend and can't be stuck waiting. I'm going to pull covers off the pump and see if anything looks out of place.

Well got it off tonight. Bearings smooth but there is signs of oil on the pressure side(like I saw at show). Not sure if that is the issue? Both wheels look fine, no damage. I think the exhaust side might have looked uglier when I first took it off but with some miles it cleaned up the rust/crud. If there where issues with the pump not getting full throttle that would knock some boost also. I know it hasn't changed externally but wonder if something went wrong inside.

I don't have a brake on it.

Found this on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GENUINE-BorgWarner-185604-4LE-354-Mack-Turbo-Turbocharger-/262346428402?hash=item3d1510cff2:g:3lcAAOSwoBtW2LTc&vxp=mtr They list it as fitting ENDT675. What is the proper part number for a 237 turbo? For $500 I'd just buy a new one. My concern is the downpipe set up on mine being a firetruck engine. Not sure how universal things are. Have to look at mine when I get it unbolted. Or this one(seems the same) http://www.ebay.com/itm/MACK-TURBO-4LE-303-X5-SCHWITZER-185605-NEW-OLD-STOCK-/262551983812?hash=item3d215156c4:g:sjUAAOSw5L9XDVHn&vxp=mtr

Watt's & BMT 9th Annual Truck, Car and Equipment Show
Freightrain replied to Barry's topic in Truck Shows and Events
Strange, when that superliner came in I did notice the temps get a bit warmer(if that was possible). I've had my eyes on a set of stainless mirrors/brackets, but even with the generous discount I just couldn't justify them for a crusty ol truck right now. Interesting how other peoples pictures remove about 20# of rust of any vehicle I own? Way back after I bought the truck and took it to a diesel club function a fellow actual photographed it and then photoshopped all the rust off it. Looked pretty good LOL!
