Building the sleeper
Freightrain replied to Vladislav's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
I like it!!! Good thinking. Why reinvent the wheel when someone already made it for you. Great work on the rest of it. How proper would it be to pleat the back wall?? Or put the old Mercury fantail design in it? That is something I've put thought into with my bunk. It has a two piece rear wall. If I could come up with some stainless, I'd like to either pleat it or fantail it to give it a more "old" look. I could do this with my bunk. -
Building the sleeper
Freightrain replied to Vladislav's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
Nice work Vlad. Unfortunately that is how they usually go. After last weeks race, I found the bottom of my side door in my race trailer was rotted off(like 12" worth) inside the door. Only thing that was holding it together was the alum extrusions around the outside. I ended up building a complete new door from scratch. 1" x 1 1/4" dimensional Poplar. All corners dutch lapped. Screw/glued to 1/4" luan: I got it installed Sunday after reusing the existing outside alum skin. Looks all the same.. I have a couple more pics I need to download. If the factory had only primed the inner pieces, it would not have rotted. Sound familiar? Though the door did last 17 yrs. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Before I got the free bunk for my truck, I was really, really wanting to build a bunk for mine. That way I could make it how I wanted and then skin it to resemble a Mercury. -

It looked pretty short. I was going to guess 32" if anything. Best deal of doing my truck, the 42" bunk was FREE!!! It was even white ta boot. -
WANT TO BUY Looking for A B model Mack Sun Visor
Freightrain replied to ttttrucks's topic in Parts Wanted
I bought my grille from Barry about 12+ yrs ago? $600. Now they are much, much more if still available. Barry was working on getting a visor remade, not the Lund, but an Aussie version. Never got finalized. -

The ORIGINAL Italian Job!! Stuck on a cliff.......what will they do????????? Used to be a B model mini around town, 25 yr ago? With a Chevy dually bed on it and the tailgate had MACK letters across it instead of Chevrolet. That one is kinda cool, different. Not that I would own it, but had thoughts of building something like that many, many years ago.

We had 41 cars Sat and 31 Sunday. Yup, I'll take ANY win. I just have to laugh when people(usually unhappy racers) that pout and piss/moan about how they lost and should won, blah, blah, blah. It has been a couple years since I won a race. I was due. Been having a reall piss poor summer, going out first round with .010 redlights!!! Dammit. I remember back to 2006, final race for the season and I was in the points lead. I had 4 redlights and an easy win in the final(buddy slept bad at the light). The poor losers were just bitching up a storm that I won like that. Hell, I cut decent lights all day, I can't help that THEY couldn't wait! Being the slower car in the field has its good and bads. I can redlight first or you can redlight waiting!

I had two points races at Pittsburgh, so I couldn't make Truckfest. We had two races(sat and sun).............and I took home ALL the marbles on Saturday!!! Yup, six rounds of agony, but I beat them all. Well, four of the rounds my opponent beat themself. I have FOUR redlights against me and then a bye into the final round. It was a long day, final was about 10pm. I was having a horrible time finding the tree(bad reaction times during time trials). I did get straightened out by first round enough to not redlight myself or sleep too bad. First round .080 light, 2nd round .058, third round .028, fourth round I choked to a .102. The bye run I chopped it with a .013 and the final was .026. Payout? $1000 to win!! Ya, I did okay. I tried again Sunday, but 2nd round I gave it up with too much stripe(.03 breakout) even though I had a much better light(.036 to his .105). It was a much faster car and I misjudged the finish line. Oh well. The weather was PURRRFECT. You couldn't have asked for a better weekend for racing. It was the PID Keystone Nostalgia Nationals with front engine dragsters and funny cars running along with us and the 422 Motorsports S/S class. BTW, the tightening of the king pin slop really helped with wheel shake on the highway. WOW...it is near glass smooth now. At least for all that the ol wobble wheels can be. I was impressed. Also got some pics of a really cool "rat rod". I'll get them downloaded and post them in the near future. Cat powered sedan on a truck chassis with full air ride, etc.

The fuel these days will screw up a wet dream. I have a snowblower, antique Jacobson. Used to be 2stroke, but finally gave up the ghost so I put a 3.5 BS on it 20 yrs ago. Ran great for many years. Never summerized it, always left gas in it. Always started within a couple pulls no matter what. Til about 2 yrs ago. It won't run for crap. Tried getting into the carb but the way the tank is mounted you have to dismantle the whole freak'n thing. Not. I got a plow for my Cub so I don't need the blower anyway so there it sits. Gas today............SUCKS>

Put some grease into the slack. There should be a fitting on the one side. Then carefully pry the lock collar up. Use a screwdriver? maybe pliers? You may need to turn the adjuster to get it to line up enough to pop up.
-
I know you had/have a random "shake" going on with your truck. This could be part of it. With the chassis being stiff enough, the wheel will get to oscillating up/down on that pin and will really rattle the truck and steering wheel. I never would have thought it would cause the problems it did. You would think with all the weight on it that it would just sit on the thrust bearing. Nope. The tire gets some harmonics going on, it would shake that spindle and rattle it from the slop. It transmits it through the whole truck. If you only check it for side/side play that is not enough. The up/down is just as important(as I found out).

I can't say for sure, but this sounds fishy. Not sure how the three button control valve works, but something might be amiss with this set up and causing problems. Typically the "Slack adjuster" needs to be within a specific angle to the brake chamber rod for proper leverage. I'm sure someone more in the know, but I would assume that 30/30 chambers would apply more brakes then 20/20's?
-
I'm thinking Trent had the same issues years back with his R700? Does it have the proper slack adjusters on it? The installed angle proper?

I spoke with someone at a gathering this past weekend and they say it went to Cleveland? I thought it went south someplace, like New Phila or such.

Gold bulldog question...?
Freightrain replied to Bigdogtrucker's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I'm thinking Muratic acid should strip the chrome from the dog. Pretty sure that is what is on the tank at the chrome plater we use at work(industrial chrome, not show chrome). Put in it a jar, let it sit and check it occasionally and see. Likely won't take the nickel and copper off though. -
It's less then 13-6 from the deck right?? Should be good to go LOL!!
-
What the heck LOL!! Been to Waycross about 12 yrs ago. Buddy and I made a weekend run down to pick up his FL120 toterhome he bought. Straight down and back.

I was concerned with my gear choice at first, but surprisingly it does pretty well for the power it has. Originally the air ride clip had 3.70s and I knew that was wayyy too fast so I got 4.10's for it instead. You'l be fine.

That is about 1/2 hr north of me.
