Freightrain replied to Licensed to kill's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Bob, No more waiting on the weekend! EVERY day is Saturday!! LTK, I have thought about doing some pancake air bags on my front axle. A fellow did here years ago. I would want new leaf springs because these 70yr old ones would like break if they actually moved. That is what happened with my rear leafs when I first bought the truck and cut them down. They cracked right next to the axle. They did last a few years. -
I would remove fuel lines at each point and pressurize tank and see where it stops. Do you have hand prime pump? Does it work? They can be pulled apart and clean check valves. When using the hand pump, it will fill everything and then start returning to the tank. I have had to reprime mine a few times in the last 23 yrs.

I'm at 38 yrs in and can't see another 11!!! I'll struggle for 4 more, if the business is still around.

Endt 673 Starter removal
Freightrain replied to skydawg's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
When I converted mine to 12v, I used four 12v in parallel. It would spin over in single digit weather and start without ether! Overkill but at the time it sat outside and I wanted it dependable. Once the batteries needed to be replaced it only got two because it sits inside now. With air start, not sure I will need to replace those two batteries? They only need to start my Onan and two are overkill for that. -

I "may" make it to Gerharts this year? -
I have pictures showing the whole floor cut out in 2002. It is solid now, but the under structure that ties into the fenders and rocker panels is gone and not much to weld to. Thus I built this first brace. The passenger side is still okay. Everyone wonders why I want a new cab, yup, this is why. Or take this one off and totally rebuild the underside after sandblasting it.
-
Did a little fabricating last night. Made another bracket to tie the existing one into the cab mount bracket. It should support enough to keep everything tight for now. Looks like a winter project to get the fenders off and do some repair? I know the front cab bushings are worn and the cab bolts are actually loose.

Ya, the transfer dump use starter button to move truck to hook trailer. Few years ago a local guy had a new stone thrower and it was remote control so driver could see what he was doing. It controlled the shoot and truck.

I think I found my issue. Will be doing some work on it this week. I realized my left front fender is wagging a bit at the bottom. The original cab corner down low is rusty/weak/gone. 20 yrs ago I ran a piece of 1/4" strap from that lower area up to the floorboard area by the brake valve. I welded a piece on the inside of the cab and bolted everything together. It made it all tight. Now, all these years later it has cracked the rocker panel seam behind the fender and is now moving around again. In so it now wiggles the floor board enough to wiggle the throttle as you cruise along, causing the choppy sound. Doh. I realized it after getting out of the truck Sunday night after getting home from the races this past weekend. I saw the crack in the rocker panel and I grabbed the fender and it all made sense. I need to weld that seam and look at rebuilding that area again. I knew it had to be something simple. I have another trip this weekend so I hope to have it working smooth again.

Yes, that is the one I mentioned above. Super nice B with single drive and a tag axle. -
ENDT 675 priming after fuel filter change
Freightrain replied to Old_DM's topic in Engine and Transmission
If the primer is dry, you can unscrew it from the base and put some fuel in it to get the check valves working. As you pump it, after a short time it will get tougher and that tells you that it is primimg. I usually go another 30 secs and it will light off pretty easy. Might chug or two but will clear up. -
The good thing Tom, once all these systems are upgraded, it will be a reliable driver you can take anywhere. Sadly you are the one paying for all of it right now. But next summer it should be a truck you can drive to any show and not worry.

KH is going after big govt with that $25k to new house buyers! What? They couldn't pass the college loan forgiveness BS so now they want to give those same poor decision making individuals money to buy a house. My money!!! They still think that shit grows on trees. Smdh. Her voice came across as a mommy telling her kids everything will be okay. Just let her take care of everything. That will go far for the very young, clueless kids today that want everything handed to them. Trump did well with controlling himself and you could hear the strength in his voice. She sounded like she spent days memorizing her replies.

Macks are small cubic inch compared to cat/Cummins. They don't drive the same, but will do the same job. Is the 8spd OD? Likely has 4.17 gears and puts you about where you're at speed/rpm wise. -
Ya, hate to pay too cheap and have it fall over in 5 yrs. This fence has been there 25 yrs. The poles aren't hateful, but the fence panels are weak and falling apart. I don't want to try using the old post at this point.

Could have been flashing inside the exhaust manifold that finally broke loose? Could be exhaust port side of head also? Have to dig around and look for a clean spot where it might have chipped off.

Thread sealant for oil lines
Freightrain replied to skydawg's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Anything with a tapered seat does not need sealant. With that said, if the two fittings are dissimilar metals I would suggest never seize or light oil to keep them from galling up. I learned a hard lesson just recently when I had to replace my AC compressor. Seems after 8 yrs the metal line fittings and the aluminum compressor fittings were destroyed when I tried to unscrew them. No easy way to clean the threads on the line fittings, so I had to replace the lines/fittings. The compressor was junk anyway, so the fact it tore the threads on it was moot. Lesson learned, the slightest dab of never seize will make it easier to work on in the future. Stainless is another metal that needs lubricant if two simlar fittings are assembled. Stainless against stainless will gall up very easy! -
Gunno order one up myself. I enjoy watching YouTube documentaries about movies. Wonder how much is actually true sometimes?

Like any transmission you have to have enough engine rpm to be able to speed it up to downshift . My 6041 Spicer is about 250 rpm split just like my triplex compound so it downshifts just as easy as the compound. I assume yours is a deep under 1st like mine? You can't shift in/out of it while moving. If you are in low enough gears in main box, you can't get enough RPM to downshift the aux. I don't use my aux in lower gears. Typically just highway speed, using the OD(4th). I have used it instead of my compound(leave my compound in direct). The aux doesn't shift as smooth(sloppy linkage) so I don't do it normally.

B-73 Restoration
Freightrain replied to mattb73lt's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Looks like a great time. I wouldn't mind going through my triplex and rebuilding it. In all it works, but the way the shift handles walk back and forth I know the main shaft bearings are plenty sloppy. It falls out of gear on decel and if you use the Jake you better be holding it in gear, except for 5th. I seem to recall a discussion about when you rebuilt yours. I was concerned about finding all the bearings.
