Friend used to work for Adelmans truck yard here in town. Big place. They offer "rebuilt" transmissions and rearends. He was forced into doing a spray paint rebuild on some stuff. He didn't stay long. They figured it either would outlast the warranty or you would have to come back and get another one. Play the odds on that!

You can see the floor is already gray from overspray. I was putting it on as thin as possible. I want the color to be a thick coat.

Kinda partial to dark Ford blue. 😉 I was leaning towards the factory color but then I figure gold would match the engine(and easier to get in spray can). I have time as it is going to get crappy out for a week and I want to hang it on the crane outside to paint it. Better then getting everything in the garage covered in color!

I almost have it done. I have rear box cover glued on. I have the rear tail housing seal replaced, yoke has new speedi sleeve, and yoke installed and torqued. I installed brass bushing in aux shift tower as one shaft was pretty loose. Should reduce slop and noise. I have paper to cut new main box cover gasket. I installed new TOB on the carrier and prelubed it. Just need to chose what color? Grey/green or just make it gold like the engine. I bombed some gray primer on it to just cover the surface rust after cleaning it.

Many old twin screw boats had CW and CCW engines. Funny story: motor shop I use has Dyno room. They were trying to get a 427 FE running. Just wouldn't do it. They were stumped until someone realized it was turning wrong way. Some way they got their hands on a LH starter and it was cranking it backwards. Doh.

Bare B model cab weight
Freightrain replied to hicrop10's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Can't be more then a ford pickup cab. I pulled my 69 off 30+ yrs ago. Four guys no problem. No room for rotisserie, so I had to just lay it down on the back wall to replace the cab mounts. Just put a thick blanket down to keep from damaging the original paint. -
The support just kinda came to me, then the addition of being able to upend to install the back box was perfect.

Ya, likely not another video showing anything like it. I don't have many action shots, just before/after talking. I have a camera tripod but didn't dig it out. Likely don't have much to show but me cussing when it goes wrong(all the time). 😂 I don't have anyway of hosting just the short clips.

No, i don't want to try and get both hoses out the passenger side. I could notch the hood, but not my first choice. I would get two smaller, matching housings and do like Trent's truck. If all else fails, a KN cone on the turbine would get me by along with a hood scoop. -
Ok, a couple pictures. I have lots of short video clips on my phone. Hope to get them all together and make a YouTube video. Nothing fancy.

Made big strides Sunday. I have it pretty much assembled except for lids and tail housing. Looks good, works smooth. I'll get pics downloaded after my phone allows it.🙄

I've been want to get paper filters for the truck, so if I could find a nice pair of smaller diameter housings then I could see putting twins on it. It limits the passenger door so bad I don't want to make the same issue on the driver's side. -

I will be doing a hood scoop of sorts to get some air under the hood by the turbine air cleaner. Ron has a Super duty Ford hood scoop on his B model. People think they are gold now so maybe an aluminum scoop from something car related. I will come up with something even if I have to make it. Today's project....triplex assembly. -

Agree, I will get a cone KN filter for turbine. I do want to get a paper filter instead of the oil bath. The inlet tubes are very sloppy from all the oil film coming into the turbo. It doesn't suck the filter dry but I would like to convert it somehow. -

I realize the triplex will likely be fine. Would I like something better? Yes. If something comes along I will rethink it. Once I saw the data sheet, I realize it is not such a large leap in power as I first imagined. I have a single disc clutch. Granted, not pulling 100k+ lbs but again I would like to improve it if I can. Yes, Rockwell. It came with 3.70 when I bought but that was too fast for 180 HP so I swapped it to 4.10 for no cost. Now, fast forward 10 yrs and 3.70 would have been a good choice. Without using the OD in the 6041 box, it runs 65 @1800 rpm. I would like to drop that to 1500(noise level drops drastically). The 6041 runs in direct 99.9% of the time. I only use the OD if I need to get around someone when 72 mph isn't enough with the triplex OD. I'm sure the shafts are no where critical speed. If the truck had 5.x-6.x gears I would be more concerned with that. -

2" Single disc clutch. It is a composite disc, not organic. If I change clutch housing to allow a dual disc I have a flywheel and dual disc clutch to use. I found a data sheet, 315 HP, 1050 ft/lb @1400 rpm. Not really a stretch from my 237. Extra 100ft/lb but a few hundred rpm higher. -

Those were likely all twin countershaft boxes. This is a single countershaft. That is why I don't like it. I would like to put faster gears in truck so I could eliminate the 6041 box. 3.55? I could save 250 rpm at 65 mph(1550 instead of 1800). -

Depending on who you talk to is if you need 5 or 10 spds for this motor. The triplex is versatile enough I am sure it would work just fine ratio wise. I know I'm not heavy but torque is torque and I don't want to have to drive it like I have an egg under my foot. I can't use just the current 5 spd because I need OD. Or I would have to change rearend. My second thought is install the 5 spd, replace my little 6041 aux with a 1241 that would accept the torque. That would get me splits, a deep under, and an OD. The 6041 needs to be gone anyway if I install this engine. That tiny box would not like this kind of power. Could it? Maybe, but again I am not willing to accept the risk of failure someday(at the worst opportune time). I will spend money to build it right the first time. Crane at work getting engine off trailer. Removing 5 spd so I could bring it home now. Weight of transmission. 750#. Surprised me, thought it would be heavier. That includes two PTOs. I have the transmission at home. Will now get friends smaller trailer and bring engine home. I'm going to weigh the engine when I pick it up. I forgot to when I moved it, and wasn't going to resling it right then. -

Triplex will fit, just not sure if I will use it? May get something stronger? Yes, keeping air starter. -

Well, I got it home. ETAZ673, TRL107, 2 PTOs, starter, I got the fuel filter off the frame and power steering/reservoir. I am going to take it to work tomorrow and get transmission removed so I can bring them home separately so I can unload them. I don't have anything big enough as one piece! I will be trying to start it at some point when the weather warms up a bit. Odometer said 31k miles but being a pump truck it has likely many hours on it. Looks like it has newer turbo and air compressor. I doubt it will get in the truck this spring? I may do a quick rebuild with it sitting in the garage. Will see how it runs. -
Welcome to BMT. Looks like a great project. I would start searching online and find an air ride cutoff with 3.90 or 4.10 gears. If your lucky you can find a Ford cutoff and slip it over and bolt it on like I did on my B. I had 5ft of overlap and it works well. Depending on your location, price will vary. I paid $500 for my single axle from a local junkyard. They even offered me a choice of gear ratio for that cost. That can get you faster gearing, late model brakes, and smooth ride all in one fell swoop.

Update. I got the new bushings sized today at friends shop. Worked nice. I got all the gears test fitted on the mainshaft. Fits nice! Ready for re-assembly next week.

Kevin All had a few and was sending me a better TOB carrier. Should be here in a few days. I was going to cut my own if I had to.
