  1. This truck has almost 600000 miles on it and today i had to restart it twiced and it was about 65 outside. I would like to get this issue fixed before winter hits. What would be a good place to start. Is there away to check the timing solenoid, like advanceing it manually and starting it, i don't know i just don't want to spend alot of money for parts and they don't fix it, we have done this before, so any way to check the system and if i have it hooked up on a computer will it show the problem, i do not have a malfution light on.
  2. Well ihave to say the strongest trucks i have every drove, one was a mack superliner and the other was a frieghtliner. The mack had a hot little b model cat in it that was eat up with power , the other was a c15 550 it done good. But i have to say the superliner was very impressive. Someone told me once, a diesel mechanic, that all the macks with cats or cummins in them ran better then other trucks with the same set ups, now i don't know if this is true or not but i also had a buddy that had a 86 r 700 with a 400 big cam in it, that was a tri axle dump that would really haul the mail.
  3. Looks like we have highjacked someone eles post, sorry, But i know a guy that done heavy hauling here local and he had a 89 superliner with a 500 e9 in it the truck puled great but he always said when you got 300000 miles on it you might as well tear it down and rebuild it because if you didn't it would go down on you. Now that wouldn't be many miles for a over the road truck but for heavyhauling and being local truck it was probley like 700000 on a road truck, but it did sound good with a d 11 cat on its back, it would go by the shop about 50 mph loaded down with all kinds of heavy equipment on its back, no problem with anything i every seen it haul, and it was a good looking truck.
  4. Well looks like you are well educated on the old two strokes, We have a old international dump that we just parked about a month ago that has one of the old 671T in it, now the truck is a blast to drive empty, its close to 300 hp but loaded it is more work than fun, but for a engine that is 426 cubic ince it does good just don't stop on a hill, with the 7 speed trans it will not pull out loaded on a hill, just shake all over and turn the sky black before it dies!
  5. Detroits were a poor boys engine, they were quit reliable but they were two stroke and you had to drive them like you were mad at them all the time, i have nothing against them and i thank it is amazing that they would even run at all and pull as good as they did. Point being that in there hay days they where a good choice with engine like 220 cummins and gas engines but now days they have been so many better engine built over the past 30 years that the only one i would want is the 8v 92 unless it was in a old cabover that all it did was go to the shows, it is fun to lung they down and them floor them and see all that black smoke come out of them, but try pulling 80000 lbs with a 318 everything will pass you.
  6. Oh yea and if you have bud wheels you can go with a 11r24.5 tire and it will help you on top end as well.
  7. If you can change the aux gear like one of the guys said on your trans and add a back box off a 14613 speed you will make it a double overdrive, yes you will gain more top end and can split the last 4 gears, like i said i ran a superliner with this trans and it helped it out on the top end about 15 or 20 miles an hour, but if your engine will only turn 1800 you would probely lung bad in high gear you would proberly want to have the engine rpm rasied to 2100 or 2200. Yes your low hole would still be the same it would not effect that. The superliner had a mack 9 speed in it to start with which was a overdrive but the truck was gearbound on the freeway, doing the swap helped it on the highway, but it did have a 3406b 400 hp cat in it. I mention the 8LL because i thank your trans is what it is made from they just add a deep reduction box on it they both have a good 1 gear and the ratio going up in the gears are the same, with the big hole overdrive. In my opinion i would talk to a good tranny shop if i could find one and see if just putting a 13 speed back box on your transmission is the way to go, that way you keep you low hole instead of getting a RTO14613 and fliping it which would help you on the top end but you do loose the low hole when you flip it because the ratios in each gear are high after this the ratio between them stay the same so what you gain on top you loose on the bottom.
  8. Seems to me you can gain about 15 ti 20 miles an hour on top end with a fliped box, with 4.64 ratio and tall rubber the old supeliner would top out about 82 and 70 was no sweet for it and if i rember right it was a rt 15613 that was fliped, any good trans shop should be able to do this for him.
  9. The doubleover flip is a old school tranny build that you don't see alot of now for some reason, but the rig i ran did work very well, let us know what you find.
  10. Yes come to thank of it you may be right, but he can get a 13 and have it fliped and make it a doubleover but lo gear is not much in them.
  11. I do like the 4.17 gears which is what the truck i run now has but it has a 13 speed maxitouqe trans and it runs 70 at about 1700, but he can put a 13 speed box on his trans and make it a double overdrive and lower his rpms at crusie and split the last four for more proformance, i ran a truck with this trans and 4.64 that pulled quit well.
  12. Come to thank of it that is basicly the same trans as a 8LL without the deep reduction, and yes i do belive you can actually but a 13 speed rear box on that trans and make it a double over because you allready have a overdrive in the main, all you would be doing is addin the overdrive section from a 13 speed on you trans. That is what you split the gears with anyway
  13. I thank you are wanting a trans that will allow you to have more top end. Now i do not know what engine your truck has but with that ratio you could run a 13 double overdrive, which is a 13 speed overdrive that the countershafts have been fliped, which gives you three overdrive postitions, but it also make all thr gear ratios higher in the trans you lo ho is more like frist gear in a 10 speed. My other question is what size rubber are you running on the truck, if you have a low pro or 22.5 you can change to a 11r 24.5 and gain about 5 miles an hour or more. I ran a mack superliner with a 13 double over with 464 ratio, but it had a 400 cat in it and i could run about 70 at 1900 or so and she would top out at about 82 at 2250, now if you are runing a mack engine i have allways liked a 15 speed fuller behind them they also have a good overdrive and give you a deep reduction in the lo lo positon, i hope i have helped you some and the shop book you have will help you also so the 13 double over may be the way to go if you are not loaded heavy all the time.
  14. I would say we have a very related problem, it only does it bad when you frist start it the frist time of the day, the smoke will last about 15 20 secs. and then it smooths right out and like you said not malfuction light, but even if you cut it off about a hour even if it is still warm it will do it for a few sec. so maybe my problem is the same as yours just a little more advanced.
  15. Thanks alot, So i guess it is allright for now but will probely be a problem this winter when the temp. drops don't thank it will crank up to good the way it is. and thanks again the more i drive it the more i like it, broke her in good today pulled well tubeing in some rough place droped the trailer and went and got another load. The only thing is it seems like your are driving a small block chevy, she does good job just got to keep her at peak rpms when you are loaded to get anything out of it but i will say this the thing will pull hard around 1400 or so not like the detroit i am used to that once you do start loseing power it hard to get it to level back out pulling. And i did put some pic. in the garage section.

  17. Hey everyone this is my frist post and i was wordering if my 98 e7 454 has a problem or not. If you start it up frist thing in the morning it runs rough and smokes white for about 30 or 40 secounds and has no throtle respones, but it will run like this for just a bit and then runs fine, untill you cut it off and go back to start it again, when it is warm it only does this for about 20 secounds or so a little less than when it is cold, no is this normaly or a developing problem that will leave me on the side of the road, no other than that it runs fine it had a leak in the primer pump and i thougth it was letting the fuel drine back but replaced it and the truck still does the same thing, this is the frist e 7 i have had so what do you all think?
  18. Hello everone my name is eddie, and i live in south eastern kentucky, The truck i drive is a 1998 ch 613 with a forward front axle, i mostly work in the gas and oil fields here in ky and tn but also help a buddy that logs as well. This is the frist all mack truck i have ever drove, with a 454 e7 engine and a 13 speed maxi touqe trans and 44 mack rears on camel backs with 4.17 rears. I can't wait to see what kind of service this truck gives in the rough working conditions of the oil and gas fields of old kentucky, i will keep you all posted thanks
