some of them split better if you rock the stick to neutral before you flip the button, i drove a 18 speed that would drive you nuts, the damn thing would split fast and if you didn't hit it just right it would pop in gear, i was used to the 13 speed in a old mack you could split it and you had a few secounds before it was in gear. The 18 speed i drove you could actally shift faster by rocking the stick, that's what we call it around here, putting it in neutral before fliping the button. Some transmission don't like it at all, my 1980 w 900 has a 13, speed in it and if you try that with it, you will end up having to stop and start all over, it will get between gears and there you will be.

I know a guy that used to run a 3408 in a peterbilt, he got it with low miles pulled a flatbed, i think it was around 600 hp from the factory and he claimed he got 5.5miles per gallon, but i never got the chance to ride it, just herd his storys. My old man ran with him some and he had a cabover with a 1693 in just a 425 hp but he did say it would do nothing with it, as far as crank problems, he never had any but it did suck a vavle and maybe got a head gasket once. Have no idea about the e9's would love to get the chance to pull with either engine but to hard to find around here. There used to be a heavy haul co. local here that had one and he said it had to be overhauled every 250,000 to 300,000 miles that's all you could put on them he said, but with a d 11 on the back not many trucks would make it 30 miles, he sold it recently in auction along with alot of cool stuf, they had some old autocars with v12 detriots in them i don't know which one, but the things sounded mean, they were in the 70's maybe early 80's they had 4 stacks on the back 2 side by side really cool looking old trucks.

Well i kind of thougth that, but he said it would all go togehter but something about the thing haveing a sna ring in it or something, i don't know for sure but i took it that he was trying to say that the pilot bearing had a snap ring in the end of it and when you but the eaton trans in it would ut pressure on the crank thrust and could cause problems, i guess he thought the eaton pilot shaft was a little longer, i had never herd of it before. Thanks..

Yea they did come out with mack trannys, a buddy of mine has one that came factory with a 3406 and a mack 9 speed. The trany went bad and they swaped it out for a eaton 13 double over, it is a 86 model. One question i would like to ask, once a guy told me that a mack had a little diffrent pilot bearing than a eaton trans used, somthing about a lock ring or a snap ring in them that would put pressure on the crank if you did not remove the snap ring when you put a eaton in were a mack trans had been, are there any truth to this or was the guy just blowing.

Myths and facts explained? -Air Ride vs Spring Suspension
oilburner replied to dds92780's topic in Driveline and Suspension
Oh and let us not forget the bogie rear ends are bad to hop and slide when you have no load on them going down hill if the ground is lose, like new spreaded rock, but there are ways to keep this for happening two, put the tranny in frist gear and hold the breaks down and give her fuel at the same time till you are off the hill, it may be hard on the breaks but they are cheaper than a rearend or body parts, and i have found this works good for any truck even airide unless you don't have a low gear in the tranny. -
Myths and facts explained? -Air Ride vs Spring Suspension
oilburner replied to dds92780's topic in Driveline and Suspension
camelback are good off road, but they have drawbacks just like the rest of suspension. We ran a international that was a long wheelbase 220 ince for a long time in the gas and oil field, we put it in places that most people would probely crap there blue jeans. And the truck went good with a little weight on the drives it would plow in any were, but you had to keep it moving. we now have the ch with camelbacks but the truck is alot shorter wheelbase, it holds the load up good but it is hard to keep the weight off the stears and when you get in a slopy place i have found this can cause problems, to sum it up the truck does not go as well in mud and soft ground as the international did but i don't thank it has anything to do with the springs or airride, i belive it is the wheelbase, when you have alot of presure on the stear tires the front end will sink and the drives have to push it out and thats hard to do. To answer you question about weight, i would say for sure that airride would be lighter but probly only a few hundred pounds, unless it is a heavy t ride set up like new way has, they handle great. So i thank they are alot of factors that determend how a truck goes. I have drove triaxle dumptrucks with airride and springs, but i perfure a heavy hendrickson myself over anything, it felt better to me than anything eles i have drove, but maybe everthing eles has be woreout. and the air ride is fine quit nice until you go dumping, and tring to spread, there is a bit of puckering efect goes on then, but with the right set up or a t ride it feels ok. -
The 14 and 15 series all the way up are a overdrive back box unless it is a rtlo. they are overdrive in the main trans and a under direct in the back box like the maxitouqe 13 and 18. The 8LL is pretty much a rtx9 speed with a 15 deep reduction back box on it. If you had a rtx1469 tans you could get a rto 14613 speed rear box and put on your tans, you just have to get a back gear that will fit them both. If it is a rto then the back box is a overdrive and if it is a rtlo the back box is underdrive and a overdrive main box, this is my understanding anyway some correct me if i am wrong.

Well i drove a superliner with a rto15613 that was fliped, and it had a 3406b cat in it. The truck has 4.63 ratio in the rear. The truck would do about 82 mph at 2250. The trans did not give much trouble althougth it did get built once because it was making a lot of nosie and he just didn't want to blow it apart. The truck had tall 24.5 rubber on it also and many times it grossed over 100,000 lbs pulling a pitts 40 foot log trailer and to be honest probley close to 120,000 grose a few times. The tranny worked good the only fault i had to it with loads like that and the places i had to bring them out of it did not really have a good low hole but it would pull out with what ever you put on it's back, just a little harder on the drivetrain and clucth. I have herd of people putting a rto13 speed back box on a rtx1469b trans but you have to buy the main gear because a direct trans and a overdrive trans have a difrent gearmess on the back. But anyway, as far as it being a bad trans. for a working truck, it just takes some getting used to, and really you need a pretty big engine, because it would be useless with a small engine say under 400 hp unless it was really geared to the drit, i mean you would probley never get it in the big hole loaded and probley be in your direct gear alot. But the one i ran is still in that old mack and if things don't change i will probley be back in the seat of it before long getting it sticky again LOL, right 84 superdog, hell maybe i will just change my cb handle to sticky, it sounds better than fieldrat, maybe my user name on here to HaHA.

hey 84superdog, did you get my meassage on the mack rears
oilburner replied to oilburner's topic in Driveline and Suspension
I hear you LOL, it would probley be in your better judgment to keep me out of it. I have been known to sticky them up inside.. -
HECK IT COULD BE ANYTHING! It could be the tranny, ujoint, or a rearend to. I drove a superliner that had a vibration at between 50 and 55 and it was one that you could feel bad, and made a slight noise. One day while going to get a load i was makeing a hard right turn and the rear driveline cam out, it was a ujoint. after replaceing most of the vibration was gone. I also have herd of rear ends causeing this problem also, the vibrations will travel up througth the driveline and into the tranny. But likely not the tranny, because because i don't thank it would do it just sitting still maybe a clucth or pressure plate problem. when the tranny was going down in our international it had a vibration all the time after you got up about 40 and when you were at a speed that the truck was not pulling or holding back, kinda like everthing was runing together it wasn't pulling hard and you were not off the fuel just a good cruiseing speed, it would growl like the bearings were coming out. Hey good luck and let us know what you find.

What engine and what year is the truck?

I am sure someone here will lead you the right way, it could just be a bad motor mount or exhaust vibrating something, i don't for sure, was going to say a injector but i belive it would smoke. It sounds good to me but i know what you mean somtimes thing just aren't right and the guys working on them say you crazy there nothing aworng, then after a week or to something major happens.

Mixing Steer Tires with Drive Tires
oilburner replied to TicketMan4u's topic in Driveline and Suspension
I don't thank it will hurt anything, as long as the drive tires aren't recaps and the stears are of course not, usally a recap will be a bit taller. But like the other guy said it will hurt you when you go to sell it, not something i would do, if it were me i would at least try to find some deccent used drives for it. -

I tell you what, if i run across any i will let you know!! I know were a set of 38k are, but i bet you can't use them either with you 44 carriers, i thank they were like a 3.80 something out of a superliner -

Ok, i didn't know for sure if you could use them or not, but i did know you were looking for some 4.17 or a higher gear, maybe i can find some 44 that will work for you. -
E7 454 no coolant pressure and running hot
oilburner replied to dusty0791's topic in Engine and Transmission
I would thank if it has no pressure then it is not running hot, if it were running hot it would have lots of pressure from the hot water trying to turn to gas, it is the same as water boilling it does not matter if the pump was turning or not, if it were hot then it would push the water out the radiator cap. The old ch we use somtimes will show hot, but at the same time it will show that it has quit charging, you can hit the dash and the charge hand and the heat hand will almost change places it is like they are crossing some how, the heat hand will go from 3/4 of the way over to half, and the charging hand will go from 1/2 way to 3/4. It could also be the sending unit or the wire, but if it has no pressure i would all most bet it is not hot. -

oilburner replied to oilburner's topic in Driveline and Suspension
No i do not, maybe you could educate me on them, they were out of a dm coal hauler, it is the complete cut off, all i know for sure is it was a triple frame truck and i was told they were 55,000 lbs rears and the truck had a tip turbine 285 engine and a six speed that was gone because they said it was bad, i thank the truck was a late 70's early 80's -
Just woardering if you were interested in the rears i found, we thougth about buying them and putting under the international, in case you did not get the measage they are 55,000 lbs cut off complete it has 4.17 ratio for 1200 bucks let me know if you might be interested they are about 20 miles from the house.

1994 CH613 E7 400 White Smoke and Studder
oilburner replied to Curtis Whitehill's topic in Engine and Transmission
Man i had a guy tell me his did this brand new, took it to the dealer sevral times and never did fix it. Mine does pretty much the same thing, at start up it will do this for about 20 30 secounds but it has no response for the fuel pedal when it is acting up, have a new injector pump and injectors, never helped at all. -
E7 454 no coolant pressure and running hot
oilburner replied to dusty0791's topic in Engine and Transmission
Are you sure it's running hot? We have a 95 ch that says it runs hot but you can smack the top of the dash and it goes to 180, maybe the gauge. -
