  1. Same thing its just way people look at it.
  2. Talking about difference in a 350 and 400 is pistons, timing and injectors plus turbo and fuel pump calibration. What PP is talking about is pumping up your pump and and maybe a turbo change with maybe a timing change. That will work but once you get use to the power and get tire and sleepy you can burn the engine. You start set the fuel up on the higher compression piston you will have to watch the pyrometer very close. When PP gets thru with you there is no warranty and remember he is selling parts.
  3. Greengiant some one has been pulling your leg.
  4. I was waiting to see if any one could believe that formula.Sounds like it came over the radio. There is too many varaibles to consider. If this was true we would not need a dnyo.
  5. Mack can tell you if its not too old.
  6. like it
  7. Retard timing means white or unburnt fuel till the econvance gets the timing advanced.Yes they were the best or last of the best engines mack made.Same way with a STC cummins.Peec cat same way. They lay in a retarded position when dead and advance when started. That the reason they miss for a few seconds on start up.
  8. The main reason a VMAC starts up with some blue smoke and misses for a few seconds is because when no oil pressure the econovance goes into retard timing mode. When you start it it builds oil pressure and goes to a advance mode for white smoke control. The timing is jerked around as the ecm sees need but will retard to some degree at full load.As the engine wears and also as the seals in the econovance wears it takes longer running after a start up to clear the exhaust.
  9. There is some useless information on this post.
  10. On a two plate clutch there will be when just installed l shape shims or spacers about 1/8" between the clutch cover and flywheel. When the disc wear too much to adjust with the linkage you then loosing each cover bolt and remove the spacers for more adjustment later on.If you find them then it was a two plate but some one may have done removed.A single plat will not use them.
  11. If it has a throttle linage it is a mechanical but if not its a VMAC.If it a VMAC I would up grade to larger injectors and the turbo that a 427 use.
  12. The piston will have a different bowl and compression ratio. Is this a Vmac or mechanical engine?
  13. I would never replace the two nut line until you have to.If the fuel line nut is wet at the head then you have o/rings leaking on the injector or the fuel line is not seating at the injector in the head. The single nut fuel line is not as good as the old double nut line.
  14. A 96 year pump should have a over flow valve which is a check valve also being used to regulate the fuel pressure. It will be located on the return side of the injection pump.If it leaks backwards it will lose prime. Also in the transfere pump it has check valves and it can cause same problem if they are not holding the fuel up.If it has been updated to the orffice fitting type over flow valve I feel like it can lose its prime due to the u/shape tube leaking or plactic line on front return or the injectors having bad o/rings drain backwards thru the orffice valve to the tank.what ever you find let us know.
  15. What you show have done is told that to the mack engineers in 1965.They did not know that.
  16. Larry I remember when the maxidyne came out and it built 235 HP at 2100 and 237 HP at 1200 RPM.The maxidyne works good from 1200 up to around 1600 or 1700 and then starts to go flat till it gets to 2100.It needs a 5 speed to to feel good.
  17. Here is another way to look at it and that is who for sure know what axle and what brakes you have.If you ask enough some one is going to give you a part # and how sure will you be that it is what you need.If you had a model # on the axle then you could call the manufactory and get parts.Sure way is pull a wheel and take shoes in for new ones.
  18. Larry I remember when I was still at mack and maybe 23 years old a B model came in one evening as I came to work and the shop manager told me to get inside and pull the engine.I had seen them pulled many times and helped but never this is your job only.I can not remember how many hrs I had but when I set it on the floor it was still warm.We always picked the front clip up by the bull dog with a rope tied to it.Plus I always let the jack set about two or three" below the rear of the trans and as you lift the engine the rear of the trans drops down tilting the front of the engine upward and it worked for many many times. This is of course in a warm shop but believe it or not there was no air impac tools then.I think they were around but no one I knew could afford one.My first one was in 67 and I think it cost 70 dollars.
  19. Again its all about good against bad.Bad against good.Bad ideals and good ideals. Its been that way since for ever.
  20. You pull pan and pressure it then look up in side with a good light.See were its coming from.
  21. You should not see oil on or in the air/air cooler hoses if its a good turbo. But if its worn out and a air filter is stopper up then the turbo can suck oil out of the turbo by the seals and pass it along thru the tubes. It is not good and should be repaired.Who wants oil in the cooler.
  22. One pan uses a rubber gasket and different size bolts.
  23. And Ron I forgot that when we installed turbos on 673 engine we also pulled the air compressor and installed a spacer with a oil line fitting in it to connect the turbo oil drain.
  24. The side of the engine it is on does not change the rotation of the starter or flywheel.
