Sounds like its a V mac.So make sure the sensor on the flywheel is adjusted right band a photo of the side of the pump would help.On that pump there is a tension screw and lock nut for setting the tension on the side of the rack.Its same as a buffer screw.Try screw it in a small amount when running and at the same time mash down on the gas and let it up to check for running better.This screw is to be setting on test bench but with good scents you can do it.

That valve that is in the filter head does not control the pressure but is a by/pass valve.Meaning it will by/pass the filter if the filter is stopped up or the oil is too cold to flow so the brgs don't starve.

What they are talking about is shock load instead of over load like in weight wise.Most rebuilder are same way about shock load.You can look at it and see were it was broken from a strain.But if it has gaulded brgs or gears that were wearing prematurely then its will fit parts fault in my eyes.

The 290 will have a suitcase style water pump and blunt nose crank.Six bolts holding the dampener direct to the crank.the 335 will have a taper nose crank with a hub on the crank and the dampner bolted to the hub.If you will give me the stamped engine # from the left side of the block I may can tell you what it is.
