I got a positive ground alternator here http://www.metroheavyduty.com/ in Roanoke. I was gonna have them rebuild mine, but they had one on the shelf and it was only $120-some dollars exchange. They rebuilt the one I exchanged the first time, it had one of their stickers on it. Mine wouldn't have needed rebuilding, but somebody put new batteries in the truck once, and momentarily hooked the cables up backwards.

Your Mack Bulldog Line
other dog replied to kscarbel's topic in Modern Mack Truck General Discussion
Speaking of the EPA and regulations, and paint, and lines, I've been noticing that the lines on the road are getting really hard to see anymore at night, especially when it's raining, worse still when you're meeting oncoming traffic. I thought I just couldn't see that good any more, which may be true- however, I did pass the eye test without my glasses when I had my last physical- but somebody told me that wasn't it at all, it's the paint they use now. They said the paint used to be an oil base paint and that it used to have something in it to give it a little reflectiveness, but it wasn't "environmently friendly" for some reason or other, so they changed the paint. Now you can't see where you're going at night in the rain at all, but at least the paint does not harm the environment, so that's a big relief. I always worried about the paint in those lines being harmful before, now all I have to worry about is running off the road, down the bank, and into the river. -
Great scenery!

Once again, I took some pictures this week. Had to take a van to the nucular pire plant in Buchanan, N.Y. and drop it on site for Areva, then bobtail back. Got paid both ways, but it rained most of the way back, and it's never fun to bobtail in the rain. I saw a large car and a big truck on poles. I'm getting out of my comfort zone here- wrong part of the world for me. Truck going through inspection at the power plant- we were lucky, didn't have to go in the secure area. Secret spy shot of one of the reactors. Secret spy shot of a good looking Autocar that was parked there. Billboard in Allentown- I hit a bump on the bridge right as I snapped this picture, I was surprised it was any good at all. Saw these units in Midway- thought maybe they were U models, but they were probably DM's. Thought I saw a DM earlier, all I could see over the wall was the top of the cab and dump body. Then when I got closer I saw that it was a small single axle dump, so it was probably a U model. Didn't take a picture...thought it was probably a DM. I was snacking on some Cheez-It Snack Mix while bobtailing and the box fell in the floor. I picked up the edges of the mat and centered it in a nice neat pile until I could dispose of it properly. I was telling NoClueJoe66 about the incident on the phone and I said "I should take a picture of it"...so I did. This is more like it- saw this cabover KW while heading to Warren, Ohio with a load of steel. This is in Bedford, Va. with Sharp Top Mountain, one of the Peaks of Otter, in the background. Headed west on I-64 in West Virginia Wednesday. Headed east on I-64 in West Virginia Thursday. Heading home on 501 this evening.

Old Bill just happened to send me some magazines he found in his closet. One was Canadian, the other was a Truckin' Life from Australia, from 2010. Very good pictures and articles, even had an article about the Iowa 80 Truckstop, kinda neat to read because it was in the Australian magazine, little different point of view than we might have. Anyway, I copied some pictures from it. Nice B and Diamond T's inside the front cover. Check out the sleeper on this 190 International. There's a Superliner (Titan) up in there somewhere! Some Superliners (Superliners) Haven't seen any cabovers like this around these parts. That legendary SAR Kenworth looks pretty neat,eh? So does this-

I'd say the salvage yard is your best bet for all necessary parts. I know a Chevelle ain't a truck, but I put a 4 speed in a '70 Chevelle that was an automatic once. Went to the junkyard and bought all the parts out of a 4 speed Chevelle- I already had the transmission, I just got the clutch pedal, all the linkage, bellhousing, flywheel, and so on. I expected it to be a lot harder job than it was, everything was there for the 4 speed, all holes already drilled and tapped, so it was pretty much just bolt it in and go. I had expected to have to drill, tap, cut, weld, cuss, and all that, but I didn't.

forgot about picking up pop bottles- we used to walk up rt. 13 to French's store, half a mile away. My brother and I would take a different side of the road and look for bottles along the way. They brought 2 cents apiece and we'd stash them at the bottom of a big tree in the ditch by the road until we had 5 or 6 bottles stockpiled, enough to cash in for something. You could get a lot for a nickle or dime then. A dimes worth of penny candy was a lot, had plenty to share. Some penny candy was 2 for a penny, where a piece of penny candy costs 10 cents nowadays. That store had cookies in big glass containers sitting on the counter too, with big red lids on them. Wanted some ginger snaps, Mrs. French would reach in and get them with her hand and put them in a little paper bag for you. Big, soft, ginger snaps too- last ones I bought were so hard you almost had to hit it with a hammer to break it apart before you could eat it. There were lots of little country stores around then, but they had pretty much whatever you needed. If you wanted a pound of baloney for a bloney sammich, it didn't come in a little plastic container- it was a whole roll of baloney, and they'd slice off however much you wanted. Same thing with cheese, no such thing as the individual wrapped sliced cheese-if that really is cheese- most all country stores had a big "wheel" of cheese on the counter in a wooden box. They kept a big knife in the box too, and they'd cut what you wanted and put in on the scales. If you asked for a pound, they had to guess- might be a little over or under, but they were usually pretty close. Many times I skipped lunch at school and saved my lunch money-30 cents- and walked up to French's store when I got home from school and bought junk food. I'd get a 12 ounce Coke for 10 cents, a cake for 10 cents, and top it off with a 10 cent ice cream sammich. I had to buy them separately because I only had 30 cents cash money- if I bought it all together I would have had to pay a penny tax. And I had to go outside and sit on the bench to eat it, because I had to take the Coke bottle back- there was a 2 cent deposit on the bottle.

Ran across this picture on Old Time Trucks FB page. Seen several B model pickups before, but not a Superliner.

We were on a party line with several other families around the area. When the phone rang, it rang at everybody's house so you had to know "your" ring- it could be 1,2, or 3 rings, and they could be long rings or short rings, or any combination. Ours was 3 long rings. Everybody knew everybody else's ring too, because some people would ease the receiver up and cover the mouthpiece with their hand and listen to other people's conversations...I heard people would do that anyway, I don't have any firsthand knowledge of it.
