  1. I noticed that too. Wonderful, now these creatures that were once found only in Nevada have gained a foothold in central Illinois. In a year or 2 they'll be over here in Virginia. Great...
  2. well...they were sorta-kinda in order until I went thru them this morning- I turned every other one backwards to make space, and they're all jumbled up now.p.s. - "If you find anymore let me know!" Yeah, like that's gonna happen! I'd like to find another one for myself!
  3. OK, thanks. I didn't look too close at Double Clutch, just a quick look at the covers. i'm pretty sure i've still got it too then.That magazine rack came from a store in Appomattox. They were throwing it out- wish I had another one, this one's almost full to capacity.
  4. That's odd- I went through all these antique truck magazines in the rack looking for the Euclid article, since I had nothing else to do. I've never thrown any of them away, but I couldn't find it. I thought it was in one called "Shifting Gears", one I only got 3 or 4 issues of before they stopped publishing it, I guess. I know the Euclid was somewhere around Clearfield, Pa. and i'm pretty sure I didn't dream it.

  6. If you're driving a 5 speed Maxidyne don't even try to downshift it on a pull until the rpm's drop to about 11-1200 rpms. It's a waste of time. They're a pretty neat deal once you get used to them. With the high torque rise engine you can let off it going down the highway- loaded- until the rpm's drop to 11 or 12 hunnert, then just mash your gas and it'll pick right back up. I used to go through Buckingham Courthouse with a 50,000+ lb. load, slow down to 35mph. going through town, and never have to downshift. Just left it in the big hole, when I hit the 55 zone I just put the hammer down, blew out a huge cloud of smoke, and was off! That was in a 300 Mack that had the fuel turned up a little, and it would turn 2400 rpms. If it's an 8 spd, it's an 8 spd. The 8LL is a 10 spd. transmission.

  8. I have an antique truck magazine here somewhere, I think it's one that's no longer published, that had an article about a Euclid in Pa. that had 2 6-71's in it. They were still using it on a job, and supposedly it was going to a museum as soon as the job was finished.

I've never driven any newer Detroits, but I did read in Heavy Duty Trucking a year or so ago that the Detroit Diesel engine was rated higher in customer satisfaction than Cummins or Cat, with less breakdowns per so many miles, forgot what it was. The "big horse" in H.H.Moore's fleet for a long time was the brown K100 with a 440HP 8V-92 in it.I drove a 1977 F-model 300/5spd. for several years, trouble free except the turbo went out in Massachusets one time. I remember one time when it was in our shop for something, and I drove another F-model with a 237 to run a trip. Took a 50,155 lb.load of Kyanite to Washington, Pa. in it and reloaded coils in Butler, Pa. Before I left I got my radar detector out of my truck and was walking over towards the other truck with it in my hand and Jeff Moore said "don't worry- you won't be needing that!" He was about right- 2nd. gear on a lot of the hills that that 285hp. would pull in 3rd, but that ol' 237 got the job done.
  11. I can't find a really good example, but this is a hand lettered unit, a 1984 K100. This fellow had all his paints laid out, always had a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, and used a baton like thing in his left hand to steady his writing hand with. Did some nice pinstriping too. Yes, that is me in the picture.

  14. I was going to tell about me calling headquarters this morning and asking about the status of the red truck. They said it should be ready this afternoon. So, I went over there around 3:30, figuring if the red truck wasn't ready, i'd just drive the yellow one again. Got my check first, and went to the bank. Came back and noticed that the yellow truck wasn't there. Low Rider was driving it, so his truck must have broken down too. I went in the office and asked what the deal was with the red truck- "Truck Enterprises said it should be done this evening sometime". I said "well, if it's gonna be 7 or 8 o'clock tonight, you might as well call Lowe's in Oakland and tell 'em i'll be there Monday- I leave earlier than this if i'm just going to Roanoke". So I called Truck Enterprises and asked them if they had any idea when it would be ready. They said it would be "late tonight, if then- they've got the whole dash out of it now, trying to get those bushings in". So I went back in the office and told Neal "might as well make that call, 'cuz I ain't waiting until late tonight to see if they get it finished, when it still might be tomorrow sometime- screw you guys-i'm going home!" (Eric Cartman) But i'm not gonna say anything, lest I get Rowdy Rebel started up.

  16. wow! that thing ought to out pull any truck on the highway. A V8 Mack,325hp, with the fuel turned up just a tad, will leave a 400 Cummins in a cloud of dust...it's true! That 375 hp V8 would probably have blown that old Peterbilt with the 550 Cat's doors off going up Sandstone, hauling 44,000 gallons of pool water.

  18. H.H.Moore used to have all the trucks hand lettered, and the man that did it was good. Probably a lost art now, they print out and cut a decal on a computer and stick 'em on now

  23. The only thing I don't like about firefox is that I have to sign in every time, even when I check the "keep me signed in" box, but that's no big thing.
  24. We've had problems with all of them, all in new trucks. New DD15's, PACCARs, and the IH Maxforce engines. And again, I don't blame the engine manufacturers, it's all the gummint/epa no pollution b.s. Saw one of our Freightliners swinging behind a wrecker yesterday, headed to Roanoke. The driver tried to take off from a stoplight and it just acted like it was out of fuel. Nobody could figure out what was wrong with it. Jeff said yesterday we had 6 trucks broke down, including mine. I got to Princeton, W.V. and tried to push the clutch in at a stop light, and it wouldn't move. Had to practically stand on it to push it in to get stopped- it was too late to bump the throttle and get it in neutral. And it never got tight or felt like it was binding before, it was all of a sudden. Jimmy the mechanic said it was probably the bushings under the dash, as they'd had trouble with them before. When I told him it had worked fine up until now, he thought maybe it was broken springs in the clutch. I said "the clutch? this is a new *%^#ing truck, only 86,000 miles on it!" Then Jimmy says " that don't make no difference, we've had to put a clutch in one of them already". That's when I dropped the trailer and bobtailed it back and got the "spare" truck. Jeff said yesterday that Truck Enterprises said the clutch was OK, and it was the bushings. And KW has already replaced one PACCAR engine that blew to smithereens with a new crate motor.
