  1. I made beast stew last week too.
  2. Even though I went to Toledo and back twice, and then to Oakfield, New York this week, I still made it to the ATHS Show in Colfax yesterday. Tryin' to run me to death again...anyway, didn't look like near as many trucks as last year's show, most were the same as last year, and it was cold! But it was still a great time, getting out and enjoying the sights. The high point was meeting Mark (Vision 386) and his family there. I bought another GMC truck too. I put some pictures here- http://community.webshots.com/album/578961673EAVmyQ?start=0 Took more, but like I said most were there last year too. Hey, the creature from the black lagoon is on amc...why am I up this time of day anyway?
  3. nice looking unit! That N14 is a good engine too. The W900 I was driving before the Pete had a 525 N14 and never gave me any trouble. Most of my down time now is all because of the Cat engine, not because of any Peterbilt issues.
  4. ha-ha-ha...i'm so glad you've finally got somebody else to pick on!
  5. I always put 2 springs,or at least a rubber strap for backup,on the F-model 300 I drove after the spring broke on the road and it ran wfo!
  6. That reminds me of this true story, involving a good friend of mine- he's since passed away so I won't name any names. This was probably...about 20 years ago I think. We both drove for H.H.Moore Jr. in Appomattox, Va. This was a small mostly flatbed fleet, in binness since the '40s. After this feller had been there a while, driving an older International with a 350 Cummins, H.H. got a new T800 and was going to give it to him as his regular truck. So he was at home celebrating his new ride with some friends on Sunday afternoon by drinking, then drinking more, then drinking some more. Problem was, he had to take a load of steel to Wilson,N.C. to deliver Monday morning in the International while the KW was being lettered. So he loaded up his cooler so he could continue to celebrate on the way to Wilson. Invited one of his friends to ride along. Somewhere between Farmville, where he lived, and Lawrenceville,Va. the friend took over driving. I don't know if he had permission to drive while the other driver took a nap or he just decided to give it a try. Problem was, he'd never driven a truck before and when he got to the stoplight in Lawrenceville where you make a left to get to rt.58 and follow the truck route to rt.46 south he instead made a right. The trailer wasn't even halfway around the turn when it hit the pole on the corner, knocking it down. The police pulled him over and the pole was still hung up under the trailer with wires dragging behind. The regular driver was passed out drunk in the sleeper. They both went to jail, not only did my old friend not get a new truck, he lost his job. Somebody had to go get the truck and I bobtailed to Lawrenceville and got the load and delivered it in Wilson.
  7. That's a good story. Good picture of the truck in the dark too, looks great! Maybe i'll get back to Milton Steel some time soon.
  8. what kind of soap do you find best to carve-you know, soft enough to use a popsicle stick but doesn't crumble? By the way, the ATHS show in Colfax is Nov. 6!
  9. Is a cold more powerful than it used to be,or am I just that much weaker?

even came through Daingerfield on the way back, but there was no sign of Randy.

  14. tires for the 16.5's might be cheaper. I ran the 12.50/38 super swampers on 16.5 wheels and I don't know why but at the time they were slightly cheaper than the same size tire for 15 or 16 inch wheels.
  15. be back later, gotta haul ass to the mailbox to get my coupons...
  16. I'm with you there,Popeye's hot and spicy chicken is hard to beat, but the red beans and rice is my favorite.
  17. do they still make that? Used to have a mad dog 20/20 t-shirt...back in the '70s.
  18. sounds like a fine place to be.
  19. that is kind of odd,as the north end seems to be much more easily accessed. I'm gonna call 1-800-ax randy and find out the reason they did that.
  20. is headed to Indianapolis today.

  21. naw, you can turn the google earth street view pictures 360 degrees-you can look ahead, look behind,up at the sky,or down at the pavement. It's pretty neat, almost like being there. The picture I took was from about the same place but a little closer. I was probably up around where you can see the truck coming down the hill, but I was indeed in the northbound lane when I took it. There were some good pictures and some short video clips on that second link I posted. Had pictures of them blowing the old bridge up too. It was almost 300 feet down to the creek below it said. And they moved more cubic yards of dirt and rock to build the turnpike-mostly rock-than they did building the Panama canal.Neat stuff,eh?
  22. forgot this added bonus picture. This is the old power plant at Glen Ferris, also closed for years, which they're now putting back into operation. Nice fishing spot here! Up ahead and to the right, out of sight between the mountains, is the town of Gauley Bridge. Rt. 60 is pretty flat from Charleston to here, but when you leave Gauley Bridge you start climbing up over Hawk's Nest.
  23. yessir, you pretty much came off the bridge and into the tunnel. I don't remember how high the bridge was, but it was a long-ass ways to the bottom!
  24. Not sure what they keep in there. It's probably about half a mile long. It's 2 lanes through it,and i've been through it hundreds of times but it's been closed for years. Used to cross a real high bridge going in from the south, but they cut a new 4 lane highway across the mountain, closed the tunnel, and removed the bridge. http://wikimapia.org/8269980/West-Virginia-Turnpike-Memorial-Tunnel More tunnel info here. And a picture I got from google earth street view, similar to the one I deleted. This shows the south entrance.I remember they worked on that cut for the new road, seen to the right, for a long time-years it seemed like. It's all solid rock as you can see. More good stuff and pictures here- http://www.roadstothefuture.com/WVa_Tpk_Photos.html
