Geez,what did I do this week,if anything?..oh,I remember-left Sunday (4th Sunday in a row I had to go out,and I hate having to go on Sunday!) for Chester,W.V. After I unloaded in Chester Monday morning I went to Macedonia,Oh. and loaded coils going to Roanoke. First time i'd been to Macedonia to load for a long time.Good place to load,nice people, Rachel ( )in the office looked good as always . Unloaded in Roanoke Tuesday morning,then went to the shop and fueled and dropped my trailer and pulled a drop-deck to Duluth,Ga. with a load of steel-2 stacks of sheets,2 coils,and some other long thin strips of something or other.Had to take a drop deck to reload some small trailers at Monticello,Ga. and brought them back to New London,Va. Then I went to the shop and fueled,got my regular trailer,and went back to Lynchburg and loaded another load to Duluth,Ga. Had to go to Birmingham,Al. to load Friday and picked up a load of rebar at Nucor in Birmingham,formerly Birmingham Steel. Made it up as far as Niota,Tn. Friday evening and stopped at Crazy Ed's truckstop and got some fuel and a bite to eat. Then I took a nap to let the traffic die down some,and left there about 12:30 am and got in about 7:00 am Saturday morning.I had a tooth hurting some when I left Thursday,and by now it was throbbing -not really a tooth,but my gum.Had a big knot on it and hurt like h#!!, but that Motrin ib is some good stuff-i'd take 2 and the pain was gone for about 6 hours,then BAM!-take two more,good for another 6 hours. I know there's some infection up in there,and little or no chance to see the dentist and get a prescription for antibiotics before Tuesday,but I got plenty of Motrin...jaw's all swollen now,looks like I got a chaw in,or I saw Mike Tyson in a bar and called him a punk...or saw Paul at a chef's convention and called him a cook. Anyway,it's nice to be home on Sunday,and know I don't have to go anywhere tomorrow. I smoked a pork loin on the grill today-looks delicious,smells delicious-owh,my gum! Anyway,they're repeating last years Ice Road Truckers on TV today,so I thought I'd watch that . Jobyna wants to watch tennis,but I let her know right quick who's king of this castle! By the way, Andy Roddick's leading some dude named Seppi 3-1.

yep, I knew that. And the national debt is in the trillions of dollars already. That's trillions,with a "T". Everybody wants something for nothing,wants the gummint to provide everything for them,not even thinking,or not caring that SOMEBODY's got to pay for all the gov't. handouts-namely US,the taxpayers. I get fuel at Kwik-Fill in Northeast,Pa. every time I go to Orchard Park. Sometimes I get two sloppy joes too. J.F.K. was a democrat and he said "ask not what your country can do for you,but what you can do for your country..." Somewhere along the line things took a 180 degree turn-now the democrat party nominee just promises everybody the moon at government expense,and i'm sure the biggest tax increase in the history of the world will soon follow.

My hair is leaving faster on the top, or as the guys at work say it's runnin away from my face, but it is fun looking back at the older days.. I know that feeling-I can roll my eyes back in my head and see way more daylight than I used to.

Glad you got your tire problem worked out...lol. I woulda sent it to the tire shop if I seen that it was like that. Yeah she was laughing at some things i said.If she thinks i'm funny, she would really get a kick outa some of these other mountain folks. I say window to their winder, I say tire to their tar. I'm no better than them mind ya, but I pronounce some of my words different..anyway Tell her I'll send her some french fried taters.....um-hmmm...Or some biscuits and mustard......Can you tell like what models those tractors are? I figured the 2 Fords are 8n's? The massey and 2 john deere's I don't know..Have a good one buddy one Ford looks like an 8n,the other a 600 or an 801,I don't know if the Farmall is an H or an M,and I have no idea what the John Deeres are.

I know-maybe that's why the place that did those wheels doesn't do it anymore,or they're out of business. The place I called in Lynchburg gave me the number to the place in Dublin and I was going to ask about exactly what they did and what they charged,but they were closed Saturday.

one of the John Deere's did have a flat tire,but I fixed it. The bead wasn't even seated to the wheel,so I jacked it up,reseated the bead,pumped it back up and it's still holding air now. Jobyna liked your Tennesee accent-" I like the way he talks...um-hmm". I said "he probably likes the way you talk too...um-hmmm."

I heard Timmy,who works in the shop,mention the other day that he had 4 wheels chrome plated for his car or pickup and it only cost $150. I don't know when this was,but he said some place in Lynchburg did it. I know somebody was asking about getting some things rechromed on here a while back,so I checked into it. Called Industrial Plating, the first of two platers in the yellow pages,and the man I talked to there was very nice but he said nobody around Lynchburg did any chrome. He did say there was a place in Dublin,Va. that did though,and from what he knew it might take them a while but they did small orders and they did good work. Tried to call them for more info,but got a recording saying their hours were 8:00 to 5:00,Monday thru Friday. So I figured i'd pass along what I knew in case somebody wanted to call them-the place is called Electro-plate,or something close to that,and their no. is 540-674-6156

The little girl on the back of the bike is my stepdaughter-now married and has three children. I was a true trucker back then-note chain drive wallet! and Jobyna (on left) and sister Sharon in days gone by.

yes,the first one I took in I said "dang!(or something like that)- these shoulda' been on dollies!" But we made it ok. Another company that hauls for that prestressed concrete co. had daycab CH Macks and stretch trailers. That was the way to go-i'd open the trailer to 55' and slide the tandems all the way up,would have been easier to make the turns than with a 53' spread axle. Where we made that right turn off the bridge was actually the tightest spot-took every bit of the road to make that turn,the rest wasn't really that bad except for the road being so narrow in the first place,went through one section of the road in particular with some ess turns where the truck was almost in one ditch and the trailer in the other ditch. One good thing about it,there was very little traffic on these roads.

So,as I was sayin' I went to Greensboro yesterday morning and came back and went to Dillwyn and picked up a load of kyanite going to Chester,W.V. I should have delivered it today,but Todd told me to go to the doctor and deliver it Monday. So I did,except for the going to the doctor part.I've had a sore throat on one side all week-hurts all the way from my ear to my neck on the left side. It hurts so bad when I swallow I couldn't even sleep Wednesday night.I went to the store and got some Sudafed,Sucrets,Chloraseptic and aspirin so I hope that'll get rid of it. My son,his wife,and Jeff all had a sore throat recently,so I don't know what's going on. Now,back to the jobsite adventure- 5 of us loaded 60' concrete bridge beams in Bristol,Tn. and took them to Surry Co.N.C, near Mount Airy. We got off of I-77 at exit 93,turned west,then turned on a little skinny road that was not big enough for a truck. Then we came to a dead end and had to turn right off of a narrow bridge onto an even smaller road. Followed that to another dead end and had to turn right,then back up almost a mile to the bridge job. Had to back across another bridge with a 90 degree turn as you come off it,then around a couple more curves before getting to the jobsite.Then we just backed onto a temporary bridge over the creek and got unloaded.The beams had to be set in sequence,so we unloaded in the same order we got loaded. I took some pictures of course... hope I get 'em in the right order,but here goes-1. waiting to get loaded, 2.coming to the first narrow bridge,where we had to turn right at the end, 3. the curve coming off the second narrow bridge that we had to back around, 4. still backing up, 5.still backing up 6.still backing up 7.waiting to unload-i'm first in line,which means I was last to unload 8.first truck empty,pulled around to front-notice how narrow the road is! 9.sitting on the temporary bridge,waiting to unload 10.the dead beaver in the mill pond,before we got back to the bridge where we had to make a hard left onto on the way out 11.turning onto the bridge 12.totally unrelated,but I liked it-this is on rt. 250 in W.V. somewhere south of Moundsville.

reminds me of the time I was working on my old Ford pickup. I was doing something under the hood,forgot what,but I just lowered it and didn't latch it.Then I forgot it wasn't latched and got in it later and took off up the road and it flew back over the windshield,greatly decreasing my visibility,cracking the windshield,denting the top of the cab,and ruining the hinges. I should have done a pre-trip inspection!

Had another interesting week,and it's not even over yet. I went to Macon,Ga. with a load of pipes Sunday. Blew a trailer tire on the way down and had to wait 3 hours for a tire. I wasn't pulling my regular trailer,the new aluminum Fontaine.They were supposed to switch the load at the shop,but for some reason they never did so I had to pull the raggedy 53 footer it was loaded on.( I know-whine,whine,whine!) When I got to the jobsite Monday morning I ran by the road I was supposed to turn on.There was A Wal-Mart just a little ways past it,but it was on the left and I was in the right lane. So I just stayed on rt. 129 into Macon,finally got turned around and went back and turned on Graham road,like the directions said. Didn't see a jobsite anywhere,so I stopped in the road to ask a man that was walking across his yard to get his newspaper. Then a cop pulled up behind me so I said "well,gotta go,see ya,bye!" I followed Graham road all the way through to the end,and it made a big circle and came out further north on 129. So I went back to the other end again and turned,then I called the phone number on the bills. Guess I should have called at first,but I had directions-the guy at the jobsite said "you need to turn on Chrissy road,it's right past Graham rd." Well-how do you get there from here? "You can't" he said."you've got to turn off of 129". Great-after my first pass I knew there was nowhere to turn around,so I went all the way through again,and down 129 to Chrissy road.Only problem was,the way the road was angled I couldn't have made that turn if I was bob-tailing.So now that I was pretty familiar with the area since i'd been riding around for what seemed like half a day,I went to the Wal-Mart and turned around and came back to Chrissy road and turned in. They had just started unloading the TMC truck that was there,so I was still there in plenty of time. Then I went to Atlanta and picked up an empty 40' container and delivered it to Glade Spring,Va. Tuesday morning,then went down to Bristol,Tn. and loaded a 60' concrete bridge beam and took it to Surry county,N.C. Went back to Bristol and reloaded and did it again today.That was the great adventure,not the Macon,Ga. jobsite. But i'll finish that story later,and i'll have some pictures. It's about time to turn in,and i've got a van load of kyanite to deliver in Greensboro in the morning...I must be off.
