  1. I don't remember the name of the place, but I got off of 40 at Cherry St,went north a little ways, turned left, and the place was on the left.We also deliver to a couple of places in Knoxville for N.B.Handy,but I don't remember the name of the places.I pass through Knoxville occasionally going to White House, north of Nashville, Chatanooga, and when I go to Birmingham or Mississippi or Louisiana I run down 81 to 40 to 75 to Chatanooga and down I-59 ,instead of running 85 to Atlanta and then running 20 to Birmingham like a lot of the guys do.You bypass Charlotte and Atlanta that way,and it's just better running I think.
  2. it would definately be a slow process if I walked to Tennesee. Wouldn't be a lot faster if I drove that cement mixer out there, using it as a troop carrier.I'D have to leave somebody behind, and besides they'd probably put me out of service at the scales just west of Knoxville,so i'm just gonna forget the whole idea. I'd be running about 53 mph wide open in a 70 mph zone anyway, and that's on the downhill side. That's why I drive it in parades,it's the only time I can keep up with the rest of the traffic. I bet it would be competitive in a slow drag race though.
  3. I get through that area once in a while, but it's been a while since i've been down that way.I delivered a load in Pine Knot,Ky. once too.
  4. I wish you were too,you'd be more'n welcome.
  5. Hi Paul, was your H-model's picture on oldmacks.com ? they had one listed for sale a while back, but I see it's not on there anymore.Just wondering.Never drove an H-model,but they had right many of them at the antique truck show I went to in Troutman,N.C. in July. There was a trucking company that still ran a lot of H-models up until the early 80's at least,I used to see them all the time, but I can't remember the name.Seems to me it was either Harrisonburg Motor Express or Spotswood Trail Express.
  6. Once again I have returned from a week of hauling freight up and down our nation's highways...nothing exciting or out of the ordinary happened, which is good.I went to Avon,Oh. Monday, reloaded at Macedonia for Roanoke, then took a load from Dillwyn to Zelienople,Pa. and reloaded at Pittsburgh back to Lynchburg.Got that off this morning and picked up a load of Kyanite at Dillwyn going to Fremont,Oh. to deliver Monday. I'll be leaving Sunday. Next weekend i'm making a stew, and I wish you all could come. I have a 7 1/2 gallon cast iron stew pot,and make it over a wood fire.I'm not bragging but lot's of people say it's the best stew they ever ate.I make it the same way every time, so it comes out seasoned the same with the same ingredients, right at 7 1/2 gallons. The pot is full, and there's always plenty. If any's left over I can freeze it.That's a lot of stew, but 20-30 people can put away a lot of stew, though last year I had a very light turnout. I just use beef, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, corn, green beans, peas, butterbeans (some people call them lima beans,I call them butterbeans ),secret herbs and spices, worcestershire sauce, and butter-no,land 'o lakes margarine actually. No poke salad though.

    Frost

Yeah the shipping's not so expensive,it's that handling part. I've never tried poke salad. Some more of my turnips came up since it rained though, maybe i'll have some turnip salad later.

    Frost

They're calling for frost tonight and tomorrow night so I picked all my tomatoes that were ripe,or showing any sign of ripening. Then I went back and picked the biggest and best looking of the green ones.I'm gonna wrap them in newspaper, put them in a box and put them in a closet to see if they'll keep for a while.Shame the biggest and best looking tomatoes are on the vines now that it's about to frost, but they just didn't get any rain until last week.I've got a pepper plant that's still blooming and I pulled that up too and brought it in.If anyone wants a tomato just let me know, there's plenty more green ones out there- they're free, shipping and handling is $39.95 each.
  9. As Larry would say,now that's just funny right there,I don't care who you are.
  10. Yep, it is...greetings to you and yours.I just got back,I think Bill can handle it on his own from here,i've done all can do for him today.
  11. Well, shoot! I went around Gladys and raised a sizable militia, and all three of us were going to march on Millington,Tn.,and attack. But,since personal attacks are against the rules,as acting general I called it off.Must be your lucky day...you know who you are...
  12. I've been out seeing how much money I could spend today,or so it seems anyway.I went to the drug store and got a prescription filled, stopped by the cell phone battery store to get a new battery, then had to go to Altavista to the shoe shop to get my boots I was having resoled.Made the mistake of criticising ( that just doesn't look right-maybe I can't spell criticizing either ) Jobyna's driving along the way,and how she pays attention to everything except what she's supposed to be doing, which is driving. Pretty quiet trip to Altavista. When we got to the shoe shop I saw her looking at a pair of Justin boots when I was about to pay for my repair job,and ended up buying them for her. They were $135 and the pair right beside them was $100,but she didn't like them, even though they looked pretty much the same to me.I get most of my shoes from Sportsman's Guide or Wal-Mart way cheaper, but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.Anyway, all is well again.Lesson learned. ...and it finally rained, for the first time since the last time.Good rain too, just what we needed-over 4 inches total, but spread over 3 days.
  13. Hey Spanky. When I got out of high school in 1974 I went to work at a garage in Cumberland,Va. and they had an 860 GMC wrecker, around 58-60 model I believe. It had a sloped hood with a 671 detroit ,5 spd,2 speed rear. They called it "Big Mama".Wish I had some pictures of it,as it's one of my favorite trucks ever, the 860 GMCs.They took the wrecker body off of it sometime in the late 70's or early 80's and put it on a later model 9500 GMC ,which they still use to this day,and sold the 860.
  14. lol, that's good, because when I get on a roll it's hard to stop sometimes.
  15. yarns? what's that?...there's no yarns,it's all true...I must be off now,Bill Gates just called and he wants me to fly over to his place to help him with a computer problem.
  16. yeah,wiggle the handles-that's also the best,easiest,and fastest way to figure it out...why didn't I think of that...too obvious
  17. Hey fuzzy buzzard, where is Vinton if anywhere? Couldn't find it on the map. I've been about everywhere in Ohio at one time or another.
  18. Oh sorry,my train of thought got derailed by brake lights. The truck you're looking at- no idea what it might be for.I did see an old White with a 5 speed main,4 speed auxilliary, AND a 2 speed rear. And this was from the factory, not like the guy with the thirteen speed,3 speed ,and 2 speed rear. There I go again...
  19. I had a couple of those old aluminum range selector valves in my tool box, they don't use that type now, they use that little plastic flipper button, and I polished one of them up and put it on my old Ford pickup gearshift.Strictly for decorative purposes of course. That was some years ago,but it's still around somewhere i'm sure. And i've seen a B-53 mixer with a little chrome flipper switch in a CB antannae ( sorry,I can't spell antenna ) mounting bracket on the compound gear shift that worked the brake lights-that would be me. I put LED tail lights on it,and they had to be wired backwards to work with a positive ground.I got the marker lights and turn signals working and figured 2 outa 3 ain't bad,and just put 2 more lights on for brake lights and hooked them up to the spring loaded toggle switch on the gearshift lever.Might not meet the official "brake light standard of installation and operation procedure comittee" rules, but it works great.

    Dark

I forgot to mention it was dark when I dropped that piece of chicken. All I could see was the glowing charcoal.I just got in,unloaded lumber in Eighty Four,Pa. this morning and went to Neville Island and picked up a light load (18,000 lbs.) of rejected steel beams to take back to Petersburg Monday. I unloaded in Curwensville,Pa. Monday morning and had to go to Pittsburgh to reload.I ran 879 to 286 to 119 to rt.22 to 376 into Pittsburgh. When I got on 22 I noticed a truck back behind me a ways in the left lane passing everything. When I stopped at a red light he got back in the left lane so he could pass me like I was tied to a stump, but I was empty and pulled away easily. When he got his speed back up though,he passed me like I was backing up-right there in front of the Mack place in New Alexandria.Watt's Mack,I believe it is. Anyway,at the top of the hill just west of Watt's there's a turnout there on the right, for left turns and u-turns.All of a sudden the truck whipped off in there, and I couldn't see what was going on because he was pulling a van,but when I passed by I could see-there were several carloads of D.O.T. men in there. My first thought was panic because I thought maybe they were pulling everybody in,and it was too late for me.They're gonna run me down,i'm in a heap of trouble now !...but no,they never even looked at me as I drove by,but there's no doubt if the other guy hadn't been in such a hurry and passed me when he did i'd have been next in line, and the next victim.
  21. Yum,had that gritty charcoal and ashes taste, but otherwise OK. Good thing I wasn't cooking over yak dung though.

    D'oh!

...and then I was cooking the three chicken breastesess on the grill, and when they were done I moved the whole grill grate over to the side that wasn't over the charcoal. So the one that's twice as big as the other two could cook a little longer,I moved it back over the coals with the tongs, and forgot the grate was over top of the other one,and dropped it right into the coals and ashes.I brought it in and washed it off and put it back on-on the grate this time. I'm gonna eat it anyway.
  23. Yeah,hate to be whining,but I can't seem to catch a break!
  24. Went over to Wal-Mart a while ago to get some film developed. I'm gonna stop looking at the cameras that are right next to the counter where you drop your film off-now the camera I paid $199.99 for is down to $129.99
