  1. My Ralph Smith truck had a new radiator core and shutters put in just before it was taken off the road in the 80's. I took the radiator to the shop to get it cleaned and tested; they said the core was good. The bottom frame was all rusted and broken so they completely rebuilt the bottom. The shutters were really nice except the bottoms were all rusted and seized. I took them all apart and got them cleaned and lubed; they work nice. The actuator was rusted badly but one of my other parts trucks had a nice one on it. The felt wiper inside was bad so I ordered a piece from McMaster Carr. Thankfully the rubber cup was still good. I was looking for a rebuild kit for my filter/lubricator and I found an NOS unit for $40 so I bought it. The rebuild kit number is 1033-01529-01; I saw some for sale on ebay. The lower radiator pipe is solid brass, so I cleaned it up and polished it. Yesterday I primed and painted the engine with Nason Ful-Thane DS138 gray. Eddeere said it's a good match for Mack Power Gray, I like the look of it. It's gray with some green mixed in.

  4. He may mean #1 cylinder is in the back...I've seen some strange ways to number the cylinders before.

  6. I have some Mack photo books, this is a really nice one--Mack Driven for a Century by John Heilig. You can get it on ebay and other places for $20.00. Lots of photos and history from the beginning through 1999.
  7. My guess would be 12,000 to 13,000 lbs. My tandem H model is 12,000.

  12. I see you have your shutter lube pot there...did you rebuild it? I took mine apart today and I haven't looked to see if I can get a new gasket or biscuits for it.
  13. I was dropping off my radiator at the shop yesterday and this truck pulled in. No idea what he hit.
  14. What I've seen done before is to rinse down from the top with mineral spirits or other petroleum solvent. If it's dirty enough you could even soak in a bucket or cutoff barrel of solvent. Blow dry or allow to air dry.
  15. This truck is definitely the nicest build I've seen, I've enjoyed watching the progress.
  16. McMaster Carr didn't have anything close to this size. I should have called Watts with KKergall's part number but I had already searched ebay for "throwout bearing return spring" and found a guy with springs for old Massey Ferguson tractors...similar size so I bought one. It works well. I stabbed the trans to the engine, it went in easy the first time so I must have done something wrong. I'm still waiting for the pump and injectors from the rebuild shop, as soon as I get them I can paint this and put it into the chassis.
  17. My understanding is that since this is a dry liner engine, you can do that...right? I used to work on Cats (wet liners) and we had to keep the SCA level up or the liners would pit and eventually eat a hole through the wall.
  18. Does anyone know the part number or someplace to get a new spring? I have one but it's worn out. It's about 1-3/8" long, 3/4" diameter, and .060" wire diameter.

  20. When I grew up in the 60s and 70s in Ohio we called them spoke wheels, and any disc wheel we called budds. You're right--it just depends on where you live, there are different names here and there.

I get that some people think these old trucks should be kept historical, but there are thousands of B models out there and I'd much rather see someone fix one up like you're doing than to see it sit out and rust into the ground. It's really neat to see one on the road and like you say if it's driveable then it will be on the road more often.

  23. I bought a 66 Fairlane years ago with a spun bearing, it had sucked up a chunk of brittle valve seal into the oil pump and twisted the oil pump hex shaft in two.
