Why did B Replace L Cab?
h67st replied to Red Horse's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Man, that B-73 is a fine-looking truck. One possibility is that it's cheaper to build the B cab than the L cab. I agree with you, the L cab is much better. -
The Dog Park Today

Great photos...looks like a lot of nice trucks. 2 W71s, and one of them a day cab...that's rare! And the 4wd Ultraliner! I wish I could have been there. -
But they sure sound like they're putting out a lot of power!

Front Spring Insulators

I put just shy of one gallon on it; I didn't second coat everything because I was running out of time and patience but the first coat was heavy enough to cover well. -

I put a coat of primer on today, then top coated with red. The color is wrong in the photos, it's Mack 400 red. I sure do like it now!! It was a hassle to reach all the nooks and crannies, especially around the rear suspension--very hard to get the gun in and around things. I used Nason single stage urethane, it was easy to work with and covered well. -

You could give Barry at Watts Mack a call, and they come up on ebay now and then. -
B75 711 turbo ran away

I've seen a lot of the 2 cycle DDs with emergency shutoffs...flapper door on the air intake. Handy thing to have! -
Thanks Matt! I have bases like yours...these new bases are much flatter. The old ones will work but as you can see in these pictures, the chrome top piece leaves a big gap in the middle since my cab is not as curved as a B model. I can make the old ones work but if I can find 2 of the correct bases I will have all 5.

A friend sold me some KD517 lights; I found that 3 of them had a different kind of base that's more flat so they will fit on my H model and other cabs that aren't as curved as the B model roof. I need to get 2 more of these bases, if anyone knows where I can get 2 please let me know.

Asking $8,000; sounds like a fair price for the condition it's in. Says it has a 400 Cummins. https://www.ebay.com/itm/mack-superliner-truck/363114993513?hash=item548b571769:g:DOkAAOSwvIpfaWql&autorefresh=true

In Texas, asking $14,000. Good thing it's so far away, if it was closer I'd probably do something stupid like buy it. https://aths.org/backlot/8664/1955-mack-ltl-with-275-supercharged-cummins/texas/usa/trucks/

I watched a video about the torsion bar suspension on these; the front and rear wheels are hooked to the same bar so the car "floats" over bumps instead of pitching and rolling...really interesting.

Front Spring Insulators
h67st replied to h67st's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
I'm almost done sanding, getting ready to paint the chassis. I pulled it outside for the first time in over 2 years, I tried a shortcut to compress the front springs by pushing down on the front of the frame with my bucket tractor, not enough weight to compress the springs. So I pushed it back inside and used Vlad and Jim's idea of chains and binders, that did the trick. The only problem was the rubber insulators wouldn't compress enough to put the caps on all the way so I had to whack away at them with a utility knife. They are Automann brand, I think one problem is the rubber compound is stiffer than the original insulators. I finally got the steering box back from the rebuilder, he had to replace some parts with used ones he had on hand. Charged me $300, I thought that was really reasonable. The original pitman arm was well worn, thankfully I had a better one on one of my parts trucks. -
I saw this LJ for sale on Facebook Marketplace in Lima, Ohio. You sure don't see many L sleepers around!! Frame has been cut, has a Cummins engine. Ad says it's in rough shape, asking $450 obo.

Barry, we do appreciate you hosting this website and maintaining it. Thank you!!

That's sure interesting how the convertible cab is cut and the rag top is fitted.

When I was a kid I always hated the pickup-cab trucks, but now the nostalgia makes me think they look cool.
