Thanks for the input. 18ft-lbs comes out to be 216in-lbs and 23ft-lbs is 276in-lbs so that seems to be near what I was thinking. I may split the difference and do 250in-lbs that seems like the number we used. It was over 30 years ago when I worked on busses and relined the brakes all the time.

Hi Folks, I'm doing a brake job on my 1967 DM and I can't remember what we used to torque the lining bolts to. I'm thinking it was 200 in-lbs But can anyone confirm this. I would really hate to crack a new brake block. Thanks Chuck

Yes, Superdog. As far as I can tell ETSZ= Diesel engine, Turbocharged, Series intercooled, 10 something emissions . Just not real sure of operating range. Digits ending with 5 are supposed to be Maxidyne.

Hi Folks, I'm looking for some help for a different brand. IH specificly. I have a customer in need of an exhaust manifold for a BD240 engine casting number 79129R1. Thought I had one the other day with Pappy Vance in Hannibal MO but today he says no. He's hard to talk to sometimes. Any leads would be great. Chuck

I had a digger with cyl pins siezed in the turret that I was going to send out for repairs. Thats when our regional office sent out the slice torch. Since I had never used one I decided to try it on an outrigger. I'd rather destroy an outrigger than a turret. After using it I was glad I chose that. In the future if I were to use it on a turret I would put a sheet of steel from the turret to over the edge of the truck to get rid of the slag. The slag flows more like a river not just the shower of hot sparks. Chuck

Rob, not sure if we are talking the same product. I own an Arc-Air gouging torch. Yes they work great for removing welds. They use copper plated carbon electrodes and shop air. The "slice" system uses a electrode with magnesium that is rolled like a roll pin so its hollow. It requires oxygen and you strike the are with 12V on a stricker plate to "light" the torch.

I recently used arc-air's exothermic cutting system ("Slice"). Not real impressed with performance v/s price. When the electrodes are new and long not enough oxygen flow. Electrodes consume very fast. Best cutting was last 6 inches of electrode. Our company bought it for removing pins on digger derricks and other equipment. I tried it on an outrigger cyl. Pin about 1 1/4" x 6" it made it through but used several electrodes. Definately better than gas torch but very costly and a river of slag that needs to be controlled. Chuck

It is a double check valve. Sends air to tractor protector valve. Connected to trolley and treadle. In a proper trailer hookup air lines are connected to trailer before trailer tips fifth wheel. Then trailer brakes are applied with trolley lever. As said before old trailers didn't have spring brakes. So without applying air brakes you could wind up chasing the trailer for quite a distance.

The dash mount switch can be supplied as a four wire or seven wire unit. The seven wire unit is what you need to combine the rear signals and brakelights. Usually the four wire switch can be converted to the seven wire switch with some careful soldering. PS didn't forget about brake info for you. Just too many things going on to get to everthing. Had this problem on IH's with DT's and AD-9. Ussually heat build up in drier hardens orings and causes pressure to bleed of restating compressor and cycling drier over and over. Check Bendix website for updates and part kit numbers. Chuck

Hi Joe, Not sure your plans for the truck. But in my opinion brakes are something that should never be compromised or re-engineered unless you have an excellent working knowledge of them. I have a 1967 DM with 50K axles and bought the Maxi chambers for it. This axle setup mounts the cans horizontally above the axle. The Mack part number for the Maxi's is 5369*MA15772*. Current price is around $350 ea. Consider that the roto-chambers that are on there are likely old and fatigued. They are not cheap either. Also consider that these parts are not going to get cheaper or easier to get in the future. So like we have heard so many time "do it right the first time". A $1500 upgrade on your brake system could be much cheaper than the damage that could be done when your truck rolls away while loading it. While on the subject of safety and reliability and not to single anyone out. I've been disturbed by the number of trucks I see at the shows with obvious mechanical and safety defects (poor condition split rims, no parking system). We all need to step up to the plate and do our own policeing of our hobby. If at some point there is an accident or fatality due to these defects at a show the insurance companys will make this hobby unaffordable. Personally I demand my trucks be safe and capable of doing the work they were designed to do. It's not uncommon for me to roll off the scale grossing 80,000 with my B model. My truck might have worn paint and rough sheet metal but the chassis is 100%. Chuck

Hi Frenchy, Had a nice visit there in Paris. Interesting city, rather quiet and clean for a big city. Went to see the show at the Moulin Rouge the other night. Quite a thing to see. Lights, colors flawless set changes and beautiful girls. Very impresive and well done. Although very expensive at 150 euro per person!!! Glad to be back home now. Things hve thier own special feeling here. Chuck

I think it's a concert comming up here in june. They are both musitions. Lots of American acts play her in France. Lots of American music on television and in bars and cafes. Been an interesting trip so far. Today is my last full day here. I'll be glad to get back to more familliar surroundings. Chuck

Hi Rob, The fleet that I maintain I only cap my own steer tire casings for drives. Steers have never seen the torque and abuse that the drives have. X-ray or ultrasonic inspection won't show the stress from fatigue on the sidewalls. Years ago I maintained a larger over the road fleet. I did lots of busness with the tire dealers. This is what I was told and it has worked well for me. Steer tires get capped as drives. Single axle drives cap as drives. Tandem axle drives only cap as drive if they have been in light service if not they should go to trailer. Tandem or triaxel dump should only go to trailer. If a tire is managed properly it can be capped several times in this manner. Personally I have bought cap and casings but for a truck that I will put some mileage on I only want virgin steer casings. Generally a tire shop can provide you with these if you ask for them. Like so many other things knowledge is power. Chuck

R-model Rain Gutter

I've seen the rain gutter removed on very rusty cabs. Then about a 4 inch strip of sheet metal put on to tie it together. It looks a little strange but it keeps the truck working. Personally I think it has about the same appeal of aluminum paint on rusty exhaust systems. Fresh paint over rust is always a favorite at the equipment auctions though. Chuck
