  1. I agree with Dave-why not here? I am working on a review/technical article on the famous E9 engine with the help of several engineers from the Hagerstown engine plant. I am planning to visit the plant at the end of September and should have something written shortly after that. I do have some material organized already on the development of Mack V8 engines but very little on the E9.I have not yet decided on a complete review of Mack V8 engines or to just focus on the E9. Best regards, John
  2. I have forwarded this to my E9 folks at Hagerstown. Just to let you know that the Mack folks have been really helpful regarding my E9 project so let's see what comes of this. I can tell you that most of the people I have talked to are definitely Mack people. Later. John
  3. Dave: Yes, we know about Roger's I-Beam Hawthorne trailer. I have a call into him about the auction-I am assuming he is one of the few guys that was there but have not heard from him yet. Perhaps he is on vacation enjoying some well-deserved time off. Best regards, John
  4. I have posted some photos in the gallery of #200. I would like to hear those stories. Regards, John
  5. I'll post some photos in the gallery of number 200 taken last year just before Roger Gerhart's show in Lititz. You decide how much work might be involved in bringing this truck back to life. John
  6. Jim: Thanks for that. I think Paul Matthews posted that ad. One of those heavy haul tractors is still in pieces rusting away in an open lot in PA. I believe there were 3 of these trucks numbered 100, 200 and 300. Number 200 is clearly visible in the ad. One truck was cut up and sold for scrap when scrap steel was $500/ton. That leaves one more and I'll have a lok at that truck in the next few weeks. Regards, John
  7. I am looking for some/any information on the Hawthorne Heavy Hauling company that used to operate out of Philadelphia. They had some really heavy trucks including several LMSWL's and they were all sold at auction some years ago. Does anyone know when that auction occurred? Is there anyone from the original Hawthorne family still alive? Any photos available? Thanks in advance. Best regards, John
  8. Allison: That is Matt Pfahl's garage-it was packed with fire trucks and various other Mack trucks undergoing restoration. Best regards, John
  9. Angelo: I have posted some pics of the firetruck in the gallery that I think you are referring to. Regards, John
  10. Hey Ducky, what's your friend running for horsepower? If he's pulling triples, must be the 610 HP version-right? Lel me know. Best regards, john
  11. Matt: I did get those-thank you for sharing. What year did those articles on the E9 appear in the Bulldog magazine? Was there anything else published in the Bulldog magazine on the E9? Are these online anywhere so that one could do a search with a keyword-anybody? Regards, John
  12. Fred: It was good to meet you too in the pouring rain at Macungie. I will seriously consider bringing the Procter Mack B-813SX to Macungie next year. It has shown very well at the AACA shows in Hershey winning the President's Junior, Senior and Grand National awards for the Hershey division last year. Best regards, John
  13. Paul: I really appreciate your comments and suggestions. Do you have a contact telephone number or web site for Dale Francis? Just for the record, I have an invitation almost organized to visit the Hagersville test center. I am told that the E9 is no longer manufactured. More later. Best regards, John
  14. E9 would be the way to go for that HP requirement if it will fit-right? Regards, ' John
  15. Apologies for that ill-placed adjective. In fact, most people that I have talked to really like that E9 V8 engine. I simply want to put something together that discusses some of the development and success that Mack enjoyed with the E9. In talking with the folks at the Mack museum, some of the development stuff is still proprietary but I met someone from the Mack plant at the Macungie show last week and he will try to put me in touch the some folks in Hagerstown. Apparently, they still hand-build a few E9's per week for export only. Once I have some names, I'll make a trip down there and see what materials that might be available for public consumption. There was some material posted on this site some weeks ago on the different versions of the E9 that appeared in past issues of the Bulldog magazine. I have those but don't know what year these issues were published. Anyway, thanks for the comments-keep them coming!! Best regards, John
  16. I need some info on Mack's infamous E9 V8. Anything will do including technical specs, operational stories etc. I intend to write an article for the antique truck mags on this engine and I will acknowledge all. Thanks in advance. Best regards, John
  17. I'll be there with the restored MH Magnum from Thursday to Sunday noon. It's a bit of a holiday for me. See you there! Best regards, John
  18. Steve: I am very sorry to hear about what must be an unbelievable string of bad people that you have dealt with. It is a sad day indeed-there is no honesty or courtesy or respect for the other guy these days. It's the law of the jungle and these guys might be surprised what it is really like when "dog eats dog". Let us know if there is anything more that we can do to help beyond your Ebay suggestion. Best regards, John
  19. There is always Macungie-that will be here in a few short weeks. Looking forward to meeting y'all. Regards, John
  20. Rob: Great reply. I really was laughing out loud! Keep up the good repartee. Best regards, John
  21. RW: Any size is OK for the gallery but I believe you must resize your photos in order to upload them to this forum. I think thumbnail size should be 120x90 pixels but perhaps Barry can jump in here to help. Best regards, John
  22. Rick: It was not me. I need to get some pics in the gallery so you guys can see what we're doing. Otherwise, the resto is going well and we should be at Macungie with the truck in a few weeks time. Please come by and say hello if you're planning on being there. That goes for the rest of you guys reading this post. Best regards, John
  23. Bob: I suggest that you try to find Mack Service Manual TS576, Mack Components, Book 1 of 2. Its about 4 inches thick and covers both 6 and 8 cyl engines. I have only one copy but could get a specific chapter to you if you can tell me exactly which 6 cylinder engine you have. I also have several original sales brochures for the MH series and I could make pdf's of these and email them to you. Let me know. Best regards, John PS-we are restoring an 84 MH-613; I'll post pics shortly.
  24. Bob: What engine and transmission do you have? We have lots of operator's and service manuals available for most years. Please advise. Best regards, John
  25. Turns out that this 200 HP Cummins engine has 3 head gaskets and the one for cylinders 5 and 6 was blown and had been like that for some time. Replacing that head gasket solved most of the problems. Best regards, John
