  1. Trade Trucks AU / March 24, 2017 Storied brand unveils slick bonneted Prostar day cab and tipper, extended cab, and sleeper International’s tilt at returning to Australian prominence will centre on four Prostar versions marketed through Iveco and related dealerships. Flagged by Navistar at the last Brisbane Truck Show, the project, which is just short of two years in the making, made its official debut this week with unveilings to dealers and the industry media. "Having the International product added to our very extensive product range already, having the conventional 15-litre, is a real cap across out entire product range," Iveco Australia and New Zealand MD Michael Jonson says. While the final dealership network set-up is still being finalised, Australia and New Zealand executive GM Ray Osgood of parent firm CNH Industrial (CNHI) reveals Iveco’s sister-dealerships for CNHI's agriculture-focused Case IH will have a role. He also noted name-checked the 15-litre Cummins engine, saying it was "something we haven’t had in our range" and – with 100 trucks said to have been spread through about 70 dealerships – suggested that perhaps there were not enough. Iveco says an initial list of outlets is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. "Our preference is to begin operating through a core group of dealerships that meet our stringent requirements and then strategically increase the network footprint through the appointment of additional dealerships – these could be standalone International dealerships and or parts and service outlets." Iveco Australia dealer development manager Matteo Gambaro says "From a parts and service perspective, we’re also fortunate that Iveco full line dealerships and service and parts outlets already have a thorough knowledge and understanding of much of the ProStar’s componentry thanks to a number of existing Iveco models featuring Cummins, Hendrickson, Eaton and Meritor equipment, as well as their ongoing support of the previous generations of International products. "Further to this, I can confirm that all International dealers will also be authorised Cummins dealers. "We’re confident that our initial Dealer appointments will be well positioned to suit the majority of ProStar buyers in metropolitan and rural areas, with this support to only get better as the year progresses." International engineering manager in Australia Adrian Wright noted that the launch presentation footage eschewed North American images for that of other countries where higher weights, harsh conditions and multi-combinations were comparable the Australian experience. The design of the right-hand-drive cab and aerodynamic front end and other innovations for Australian conditions were a joint effort US-Australian effort. But Wright described the present iterations as ‘Phase 1’. "The combination of the latest engine technology from Cummins and superior aerodynamic performance saw the prototype return some impressive fuel consumption figures in local, real world testing," Wright says. "Aerodynamics makes a big difference to truck fuel efficiency – about half of the fuel that the truck uses goes towards pushing it through the air, so if you achieve a 10 per cent improvement in aerodynamics this translates to about a 5 per cent improvement in terms of fuel economy. "Compared to some more traditionally styled, flat fronted vehicles, the ProStar is as much as 10 per cent more aerodynamic. Even running some basic numbers the fuel savings – and therefore cost savings – that can be made over the life of the truck are enormous." Wright emphasises the visibility advantages helped by the nose design and wraparound windscreen. "The line of forward vision for the driver onto the road ahead is unobstructed thanks to the sloping hood, lower placed instrument panel and wrap around windscreen," Wright says. "The ProStar again boasts best-in-class performance in this area comparing very favourably to other conventional cabs and even cab over trucks." Crucial details All vehicles will be powered by the latest E5 Cummins X15 SCR engine producing 550hp (410kW) and 1850 lb ft (2,508 Nm) of torque. It features high pressure injection and the Cummins Emissions Solutions (CES) system to comfortably meet Euro5 emissions requirements. Cooling is through an ‘Over and Under’ system with CAC above radiator and Horton Drivemaster air operated two-speed fan drive, ensuring optimum performance in hot Australian conditions. Coupled to the engine is a choice of either an Eaton 18-speed manual with the Eaton UltraShift Plus 18-speed automated manual is optional. Power to the rear Meritor tandem axles is via a Dana Spicer SPL driveshaft and traction is aided by power divider lock and cross locks on both rear drive axles. Up front, the models use Meritor MFS axles with aluminium alloy hubs for reduced tare weight while suspension is three-leaf parabolic taperleaf with 6,500kg capacity. Rear suspension comes courtesy of a Hendrickson Primaax-EX Air Tandem set-up with 20,900kg capacity. The day cab comes with a 4.3 metre wheel base "which allows you to meet that critical dimension of 5.4 metres from the bumper to the centre of the fifth wheel". Bumper to back of cab lengths are 112 inches, 138 inches and 141 inches. The sleeper cab inner-spring mattress is 2170x700mm. The tipper wheel base is 5 metres and both are said to be suitable for performance based standards. Gross vehicle mass and gross combination mass are 24.5 tonnes and 90 tonnes respectively. Safety stakes The ProStar features Benix ABS brakes with automatic traction control. Trucks specified with the UltraShift Plus transmission are also equipped with Hill Start Aid. They can also benefit from the optional ‘ADEPT’ package, a suite of innovative electronic features capable of further reducing fuel consumption by up to 6 per cent. The system utilises load, speed and grade sensing software, making minor adjustments to speed, power and transmission gear selection to take advantage of vehicle momentum for better fuel economy. The ADEPT package also includes‘SmartTorque2 and SmartCoast technology. SmartTorque2 is the next generation of torque management technology from Cummins. The system senses both the selected gear and overall engine load as a result of the gross vehicle weight, aerodynamic drag and road grade. All models come standard with a park brake warning alarm that sounds if the key is off and the driver’s door is opened without the park brake being applied. The trucks have dual, polished aluminium fuel tanks with 720 litres total volume – alternative fuel tanks options are available to meet specific applications. The AdBlue tank is 90 litres. The models feature front under-run protection and LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lamps for added visibility during day or night. Foreign contingent In attendance from Navistar were vice president – global export Federico Palomo, director of sales Dicky Commandeur, chief engineer Marco Anaya and director of marketing and strategy Octavio Gonzalez. "The return of International to Australia has been eagerly awaited especially given the high standing the brand enjoys here courtesy of earlier models and a very long and successful pedigree," Palomo says. "These historical aspects aside, we also know that prospective customers in Australia are also extremely excited by the outstanding features and benefits that the new ProStar models will deliver to their operations. "There was an obvious gap in the local market for a high quality and versatile, yet affordable North American-style truck that could get the tough jobs done with a minimum of fuss." Specifications Engine: E5 Cummins X15 SCR engine Output: 550hp (410kW) and 1850 lb ft (2,508 Nm) of torque Transmission: Eaton 18-speed manual with the Eaton UltraShift Plus 18-speed automated manual is optional Driveshaft: Dana Spicer SPL250XL main and SPL170XL inner axle shaft Front axle: Meritor MFS 14-142A wide track Front suspension: Parabolic Taperleaf Rear axles: Meritor RT46-160GP Rear suspension: Hendrickson Primaax-EX Air Tandem .
  2. Mack and Volvo announce the end of the 16-litre in the North American market. Power Torque Magazine / March 25, 2017 It’s the end of the line for the Volvo D16 and Mack MP10 engine in the American market with both manufacturers announcing the withdrawal of the engine from the product line up, with each company citing “diminishing demand” as the reason for the cancellation. Introduced into the U.S. in 2005, the D16 offered displacement of 550 to 625 hp – mainly at heavy haul applications. Similarly, Mack Trucks, will no longer be offering its large displacement MP10 engine, which is based on the D16. Mack is also discontinuing sales of its Titan heavy haul prime mover as well. “The decision to withdraw the D16 and MP10 16 litre is the result of limited market demand for this engine displacement and the long-term investment that would be required to maintain the D16 for the unique operating requirements of the North American market,” a spokesperson for Volvo Trucks said. The D16 engine was available in Volvo’s VNL and VNX models. The VNL will continue to be available with the Volvo D11, D13 and Cummins X15 engines, while production of the VNX – introduced in 2013 – will be placed “on hold” though it will remain in Volvo’s product lineup for now. The company is currently evaluating solutions that will allow it to offer it in the future. In the interim, it intends to offer an ‘X-package’ for the VNL model, providing the ride height and heavy-haul attributes of the VNX with either the Volvo D13 or Cummins X15 engine,” the spokesperson added. Sources within the industry suggest that the engineering development costs necessary to calibrate both the D16 and MP10 engines for full Euro 6 emissions compliance will be too expensive to justify keeping either engine in the European product range, resulting in their withdrawal from global sales for sophisticated markets by the close of 2017 or early 2018. This would leave both Volvo and Mack dependent on their 13-litre engine range for most configurations, augmented by the availability of the Cummins X15 engine option.
  3. ZF’s efficient automatic commercial vehicle transmission is chosen by truck manufacturers in China and Turkey TraXon Torque shows off its broad capabilities for the first time in a mobile crane The basic TraXon system is currently being tested on a ZF bus, while the future-oriented TraXon hybrid application is already installed in ZF's Innovation Truck Best-in-class efficiency combined with greater function and innovation, the modular design can be customized for almost any heavy commercial vehicle – making it attractive on a global level. Truck manufacturers who have purchased the unique ZF-TraXon automatic transmission include MAN, Iveco and, most recently, Ford Trucks and Foton in China. Additionally, the product celebrates its launch in a Liebherr mobile crane. Meanwhile, the ZF Innovation Truck is demonstrating the TraXon hybrid's practical advantages and a ZF test bus fitted with the basic transmission is racking up test miles. “We are very proud to have won the new TraXon orders and first-time applications,” says Fredrik Staedtler, head of the ZF Commercial Vehicle Technology Division. “Ultimately, they show that our modular system meets all of our developmental requirements – internationally and across numerous vehicle types.” By combining five different start-up or shifting modules in the basic transmission model, current and future manufacturers' demands regarding automatic transmissions for heavy commercial vehicles are covered. Up and coming TraXon will be launched this year in the Chinese market on Foton trucks. ZF will supply the model with the optional Intarder integrated transmission brake. The basic transmission model, which comes with 12 or 16 gears, offers extremely high efficiency – primarily through its ability to handle up to 3,400 Nm of torque (overdrive version), its high transmission-ratio spread of up to 99.7 percent and the outstanding, best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. Included are ZF's innovative electronics on a uniform software platform, combining the predictive shifting strategy, PreVision GPS, as well as a rolling and rock-the-vehicle-free function. TraXon is also the first choice of Ford Trucks. It is a standard component in the new and recently launched Ford Trucks series, with a Euro-6 driveline. The new orders from China and Turkey will see the first volume production of ZF's innovative TraXon outside the European Union (EU). European customers are also relying on TraXon. The transmission's volume production launch has been successful at MAN, and Iveco will follow suit. “With TraXon, we are continuing the outstanding cooperation we have enjoyed with Iveco in the past decades. The innovative modular transmission system is seamlessly replacing the ZF-AS Tronic used up until now,” adds Staedtler. ZF's innovative TraXon will also be used outside the truck segment Flying high Heavy-duty trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating exceeding 200 tons will benefit from comfort features such as high shift and start. The launch of the TraXon Torque model installed for the first time into the Liebherr LTM 1300-6.2 mobile crane is a prime example of these features. The crane has a total weight of 72 tons and is equipped with a 455 kW engine handling a maximum load of 300 tons. Rather than having a standard dry single or twin plate clutch, the basic TraXon transmission is combined with the torque converter clutch module. At extremely high input torque and in lower gears, it ensures non-wear starting as well as gentle and comfortable maneuvering, all at low life-cycle costs. The engine-dependent PTO is an additional option for mobile cranes. Regardless of the driving speed, this device provides very high torque to the auxiliary systems. ZF also offers a total of four reverse speeds as an additional option within TraXon, which benefits other specialized truck applications – such as those vehicles used in highway construction work that require speed in reverse. As with the previous TC Tronic HD model, the TraXon Torque is also available on vehicles that weigh considerably more, such as the Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 with a gross vehicle weight rating of 108 tons and 750 tons load. Most of the Liebherr mobile crane product family will be switched over to the new transmission. Diverse modules The TraXon hybrid configuration has been installed in ZF's current Innovation Truck and demonstrates the benefits of driveline electrification for long-distance trucks. It comes with a 120 kW and 1,000 Nm electric motor as well as a separating clutch in the bell housing of the transmission. This enables all hybrid functionalities, including recuperation, electric maneuvering, start/stop functionality and performance support from the combustion engine, or boosting. Additionally, in generator mode, the hybrid module can be integrated into the power supply of other units, such as refrigerated transport. In any scenario, the TraXon Hybrid contributes toward reducing fuel consumption and truck emissions. “It is true that the approximately five percent savings for long-distance trucks is below those values typically seen in electric delivery trucks or even passenger cars. Nevertheless, due to the considerably higher mileage and fuel consumption of long-distance driving, hybrid technology is an economic and environmentally friendly solution that pays for itself fairly quickly,” explains Staedtler. Another market segment suitable for the TraXon transmission is that of passenger transport and ZF is currently evaluating an application of the basic transmission on a test bus. Modern passenger transport vehicles require transmissions capable of returning fuel savings with heavy loads while providing reliability and driver and passenger comfort. TraXon meets all of these requirements thanks to the variable, smooth and quiet gear transitions. At six decibels lower than its predecessor, the AS Tronic, TraXon returns a 35 percent improvement.

  5. Big Rigs / March 28, 2017 In 1982, a young Dick David purchased the BP Depot in Katherine NT and the name Dick David Fuel Supplies was on the move. Dick had previously been a driver and road boss in the Buntine Roadways Group and had learnt some valuable lessons in the running of a transport company during his time with Noel Buntine. With his knowledge and contacts in the northern pastoral industry, the business grew with fuel sales and delivery to the pastoral companies, road houses, mining ventures in the Top End. Later trading as Australian Fuel Distributors (AFD) the fuel depots in Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Mount Isa, Darwin, Cloncurry and Kununurra were added to the fold. The business evolved to be a major fuel and lubrication supplier to northern Australia. Dick retired in 2003 selling the business to son Brooke, who took the business to another level with the purchase of retail sites rebranded as Gull Fuel and Ausfuel and the transport arm that has become Direct Haul. With cartage contracts to other major fuel suppliers and mining companies, Direct Haul increased its fleet. In 2003, Brooke David sold the business in 2003 to Puma Energy, a global energy corporation. The purchase fitted well with Puma's future expansion plans into Australasia. Direct Haul currently hauls around a billion litres of fuel each year with a fleet of eight prime movers pulling quad trailers, 16 prime movers on triple trailer work, one B-Double and 11 local trucks working out of depots in Darwin, Katherine, Alice Springs and Kununurra. Just to give an idea of the capability, a Quad in maximum configuration , tri-drive and tri-axle dollies has a GCM of 165 tonnes, up to 53.5 metres in length can carry 130,000 litres of diesel, a big responsibility for the drivers. Direct Haul's scheduling section has a number of old hands who can advise drivers of road conditions and possible hazards to get their load to the customer on time with a minimum of fuss. The fleet of trucks and trailers are washed in the in-house wash bay after every trip, rims polished regularly and cleaned inside making the fleet always look a credit to the company and the drivers. Direct Haul has evolved into a big player in the fuel cartage business in the Top End but still seems to be able to keep the personal touch to the end users, old traditions live on. .
  6. Trade Trucks AU / March 24, 2017 New system allows drivers to have a ‘personalised workplace’ New Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX models will have latest in-cab upgrades aimed at improving navigation and driver-comfort features. Volvo Trucks says the upgrades will allow drivers to experience more efficient vehicle handling. The new track navigation system is easy to access and includes a touchscreen system. Volvo Trucks chief project manager Anders Edenholm says the new system for services and infotainment allows drivers to "personalise their workspace". "For example they can listen to their favourite local radio station no matter where they are, and they can have hands-free access to both their personal phone as well as work phone," he says. "Overall this helps create an enhanced and safer driving experience. "It increases the feeling of home when drivers are away for long periods of time." The design of the system focused on driver comfort, Edenholm says. "Because Dynafleet OnBoard and Navigation are integrated, drivers can receive messages with GPS coordinates and in just with a few seconds start navigating to their next assignment. "More time with hands on the steering wheel and eyes focused on the road means a safer and more productive driver." Other features include push-to-talk button for voice control on the steering wheel, as well as access to media streaming services such as Spotify, Deezer and TuneIn, as well as DAB [Digital Audio Broadcasting] and DAB+. .
  7. Trade Trucks AU / March 23, 2017 Sydney-based Bedrock Quarry Products & Bulk Transport looked to a big 685hp Mack Super-Liner Tridem for a high productivity, 48-tonne payload, Performance-Based Standards (PBS) combination. The PBS-approved Super-Liner Tridem and 5-axle dog trailer were handed over at VCV Sydney West, with Mack Trucks Global Senior Vice President, Govi Kannan, and Mack Trucks Australia Vice President, Dean Bestwick in attendance. Mack Trucks Sales Manager at VCV Sydney West, Michael Inzitari, says Bedrock Quarry Products were looking at ways of increasing productivity and payload in supplying quarry materials to major civil contractors and concrete plants. "For years and years, sand and gravel was mined out of the Sydney basin for concrete and construction," Mr Inzitari said. "With those quarries now closed, the sand and gravel is pulled from further away − up the central coast and down the south coast, so making the trip in a normal truck and dog just doesn’t make sense when you’re only carrying a 32 to 33 tonne payload." Through the PBS scheme, VCV Sydney West were able to offer Bedrock Quarry Products the potential to achieve higher productivity and the best possible payload through an innovative and optimised design. "We’re constantly looking at ways of increasing our productivity," said Director of Bedrock Quarry Products & Bulk Transport, Mick Colley. "This Super-Liner Tridem that Mack developed can get about a 48 tonne payload - that’s about one and a half of the previous truckloads, and that’s a huge advantage for our business." "We have been using Mack trucks for years now, and have an entirely Mack fleet. Quarry work can be rough, and these trucks are built and get the job done day after day. "Now Mack are combining their toughness with the latest in innovation and technology, which means they’re the obvious choice for my business." Mack Trucks Australia Vice President, Dean Bestwick, says Mack Trucks is excited and proud to continue to partner closely with Bedrock Quarry Products & Bulk Transport. "Bedrock has made the decision, time and time again, to carefully select Mack to build their trucks," Mr Bestwick said. "Their fleet of 13 is comprised entirely of Mack trucks, including three 3-axle dogs, five PBS 4-axle Dogs, two PBS 5-axle dog trailers, one 25 metre B-Double, an 8-wheeler rigid and the newly acquired Super-Liner Tridem. "It’s really satisfying to produce customised trucks that are a perfect fit for the job with unmatched reliability, durability and application excellence; ultimately increasing productivity and profitability for our customers." As other customers also look to increase payload, Dean says the delivery of the PBS Mack Super-Liner Tridem showcases the brand's commitment to application excellence whilst leveraging the latest technology and innovative designs. "Bedrock Quarry Products & Bulk Transport pride themselves on prompt, efficient and reliable transportation of quarry products to each and every customer and Mack stands behind our trucks and our customers in everything they do," Mr Bestwick said. The Mack Super-Liner is fitted with the liftable pusher axle with HLM2 suspension, to allow reduced tyre wear and drag when empty running. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) approved and PBS compliant combination will allow Bedrock Quarry Products to carry an estimated combined payload of 48 tonne, across an overall vehicle length of just over 24 metres. The Super-Liner features a custom Sloanebuilt Trailers aluminium tipping body and quin-dog trailer, ensuring the lightest tare weight while still achieving maximum strength and durability. .

  9. MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / March 28, 2017 MAN exhibited its industry expertise in long-haul transport, urban distribution transport, construction, heavy-duty transport, forestry & agriculture and municipal & fire brigade services MAN TGE for the first time at the Trucknology Days 91 exhibitors 7,000 visitors over three days The main focuses of the three-day MAN Trucknology Days event were the innovations introduced on MAN trucks at the start of the year. At its in-house exhibition, MAN made around 170 vehicles from many different sectors available to view and drive. MAN has been running the Trucknology Days as an in-house exhibition since 2008: an event where information meets fascination. Around 7,000 international visitors attended the event in Munich between 23 and 25 March 2017. There are traditionally two parts to the event: the MAN TruckForum and the test track. At the TruckForum, MAN Services and its partners display their range of services and individual transport solutions ranging from body manufacture to subcontracting. RIO, the new brand-name for networked logistics in the Volkswagen Truck & Bus Group, gave an insight into “connected performance” in the transportation industry in the future. RIO bundles digital services for the transportation and logistics ecosystem. For the first time ever, all parties involved in the supply chain - from the shipper to the recipient - through hauliers, carriers, loaders, materials requirement planners and drivers, can be networked via a unified information and application system which includes predictive functionality. With its Connected CoDriver, MAN is helping drivers and companies achieve a economical driving style. A trainer analyses the style and framework parameters of their driving and advises the driver. Outside the MAN TruckForum, part of the vehicle exhibition drew attention to the Trucknology Days. Heavy-duty semitrailer tractors and heavy loading cranes on MAN platforms gave a foretaste of the big industry display on the test track. The white painted trucks were part of the 'Trucks to go' fleet, a range of pre-built, ready-to-go commercial vehicles. The new MAN TGE makes MAN a full-range producer. With their permitted gross vehicle weights of between 3 and 5.5 tonnes, delivery vans with normal, high or super-high roofs, and chassis with single or double crew cabs have been added to the MAN model portfolio. At the TrucknologyDays, the MAN TGE was introduced to visitors as a delivery van. On the test track, visitors could find around 120 vehicles. Experts from MAN and from the body manufacturers explained the specific product features in talks, during a test circuit and beside the vehicles themselves. Visitors had the chance to drive around 30 of the vehicles on the test track. Examples from the truck product range was available, from the compact sweeper based on the MAN TGL to tippers and a fire service vehicle on the MAN TGM platform, the MAN TGS as a tilted articulated truck, a refuse collector vehicle or a timber transporter, and many MAN TGX vehicles for long-haul or heavy-duty purposes. The vehicle exhibition covered the following sectors: long-haul transport, urban distribution transport, construction, heavy duty transport, forestry & agriculture and municipal & fire brigade services. Long-haul transport sector For long-haul transport operators, the Total Costs of Ownership (TCO) are of vital importance. One element in this is the MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 semitrailer tractor that was introduced at the IAA 2016. On a tour going right across Europe and supported by TÜV SÜD, the engineers recorded potential fuel savings of 6.35% compared with the vehicle's predecessor. And the TGX EfficientLine 2 was already regarded as efficient when it came to fuel consumption. The more powerful engine associated with the introduction of the Euro 6c emissions standard and the increase in the maximum torque both contribute to the excellent driving performance. Connecting the pioneering cruise control system MAN EfficientCruise with MAN EfficientRoll significantly improves the potential savings. The EfficientRoll free-wheeling gearbox function will come into effect on gentle inclines or slightly undulating route sections. The new generation MAN TipMatic gearbox is another key component in the design of the driveline on the EfficientLine 3, which is consistently focused on saving fuel. At the Trucknology Days, MAN worked closely with semitrailer manufacturers to display various vehicle concepts for long trucks. When payload is a key factor, combinations of MAN tractor units and semitrailers or trailers score highly. They are designed with a permitted gross weight of 40 tonnes. One of these new concepts is the semitrailer which is 1.3 m longer, meaning it has three additional spaces for pallets. The total vehicle length is now 17.8 m instead of the 16.5 m that is standard for semitrailer units. Another version consists of a 3-axle vehicle for swap bodies with attached dolly, on which a standard semitrailer can be mounted. MAN's product range is so extensive that each of the vehicle configurations intended for long trucks can be produced with a 2-axle semitrailer tractor or a 3-axle chassis to support the carrier frame for swap bodies. Urban distribution transport sector Urban distribution transport means far more than a dry freight truck body on a MAN TGL platform, serving as a large delivery van. This was demonstrated by the wide range of vehicles exhibited at the Trucknology Days: refrigerated trucks, beverage bodies, dry freight truck bodies and milk collectors based on MAN TGL, TGM and TGS. Most of these come on a 2- or 3-axle chassis. Tractor trailer units are used either as tankers or silo trucks, or as heavy-duty food distribution vehicles with 1- or 2-axle Citysattel semitrailers. With tankers, the payload plays a key role in economic efficiency, because this is calculated according to the volume delivered. For this reason, MAN’s focus for the tanker-silo version of the TGS series has always been on creating an uncompromising lightweight vehicle that can simultaneously handle maximum payloads. Optimising the unladen weight makes the vehicle the lightest customer-oriented semitrailer tractor for tank and silo operations in the MAN product portfolio. If all the measures are implemented, the unladen weight of the TGS-TS is no more than around 6560 kilograms. Of special importance on drinks transporters are a low loading sill and manoeuvrability, so that the delivery points can be reached. On these vehicles in the TGM and TGS series, small tyre size and four corner air suspension are among the improvements made specifically for this purpose. The air suspension firstly protects the fragile and easily breakable load from bumps in the road surface and, secondly, allows the vehicle to be lowered by a few centimetres for loading and unloading. MAN supplies modified platforms as the base for milk collection vehicles. These require plenty of space on the right hand side for attaching the cabinet containing the pump and flow rate meter. This additional space on the frame has been achieved by moving the Euro 6 exhaust silencer and the diesel and AdBlue tank. Construction sector With over 30 vehicles, the construction sector occupied an important place at the MAN TrucknologyDays. There was a wide range of different models. Working closely with the body manufacturers, MAN was demonstrating its three-way tippers and tilting articulated trucks, crane tippers, building materials transporters, truck mixers, roll-off and set-down skip loaders and heavy-duty semitrailer tractor. One of the innovations at the TrucknologyDays was the combination of the MAN HydroDrive with the automatic transmission system TipMatic. This is the ideal configuration for when vehicles travel mainly on tarmac roads and only occasionally require additional traction. The benefit of the MAN HydroDrive hydrostatic front-axle drive really becomes evident when an off-road slope has to be negotiated without a load. A typical example of this is a tilted articulated truck which has deposited its load at the bottom of a pit. The rear axle, now under very little load, lacks traction on the incline. A benefit for the body manufacturers is that the PTO for the engine and gearbox can now be used without restriction. MAN HydroDrive is available for 2-, 3-, and 4-axle vehicles in the TGS series and for 2- and 3-axle semitrailer tractors in the TGX series. For cranes, MAN offers specially prepared chassis in the TGS series. All expectations regarding manoeuvrability, traction and efficiency are met by the drive formula 8x4H-6. This abbreviation stands for a 4-axle MAN TGS with the required axle load to support the crane. The frame has places for mounting the supports. The HydroDrive drive system on the second front axle provides the necessary traction on construction sites. The requirement for great manoeuvrability in order to be able to position the crane on the site is met by the fact that three of the four axles are articulated: the two front axles and the lifting trailing axle. The hypoid axles and economical engines in the D26 series help to boost efficiency while travelling between the yard and the construction site. Payload is important for truck mixers. The permissible weight for 4-axle vehicles in Germany is 32 tonnes. The lighter the chassis, the more concrete can be loaded into the drum. The MAN TGS 32.420 8x4 BB meets the sector requirements exactly: a weight-optimised frame made of high-strength steel, a lightweight but powerful 420 hp engine combined with the MAN TipMatic automated gearbox, a lightweight hypoid tandem axle assembly and a wheelbase of 2505 mm between the second and third axles ensuring compact vehicle dimensions and optimal manoeuvrability both in traffic and on the construction site. It also comes with a uniform set of tyres in 315/80 R 22.5 format on aluminium rims all round, tanks for 300 litres of diesel and 35 litres of AdBlue fluid, a spacious and clearly laid-out M cab for the driver and co-driver and a partially raised Euro 6 exhaust system behind the cab. This means that the chassis weighs just 9175 kg (excluding the driver and with the fuel tank 10% full). Heavy-duty transport sector MAN's heavy-duty transport solutions are always a source of fascination at the vehicle exhibition and on the test track. Whether it is a question of transporting heavy weights or bulky objects in urban areas, the MAN product range is perfectly equipped to meet these very specific requirements. Regional circumstances and different legal requirements affect the configuration of vehicles. Different payloads, wheelbases and engine outputs from the MAN TGS and TGX series can be put together as required for the tractor vehicles and semitrailer tractors. Engines from the D38 engine range, including 540 hp, 580 hp and 640 hp, and boasting high performance and torque, are installed exclusively on the MAN TGX platform. The top-of-the-range versions have 640 hp and drive a 4-axle heavy-duty semitrailer tractor. The 4-axle MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 BBS combines the most powerful version of the D38 engine and the MAN TipMatic with the standard converter-clutch unit. This increases the input torque from 3000 Nm up to 4740 Nm. As a result, even the heaviest loads move off smoothly but powerfully. The converter-clutch unit enables particularly precise manoeuvring of the vehicle in tight spaces, on inclines and with heavy loads. Forestry & Agriculture sector For freight operators moving short timber, MAN offers some interesting vehicle concepts in its TGS and TGX series. Moving timber away from where it has been stacked can be quite challenging. If the track is muddy or there is a climb, an all-wheel drive may be essential. But when driving to the sawmill on a tarmac road, a rear wheel drive is sufficient and far more economical. MAN's solution is the switchable hydraulic front wheel drive. The MAN system, called HydroDrive, has been very well received by timber transporters ever since it was introduced in 2005, as it is so practical. What is new now is that MAN has further increased its range of options. Combining the automatic gearbox TipMatic with the MAN HydroDrive saves the driver from having to change gear. With a self-propelled wood chipper, the operator can move about flexibly and change location quickly and easily to work through other jobs. The high engine power that is required to drive the chipper uses a powerful PTO fitted at the factory with up to 8000 Nm of torque. This saves the additional weight and expense of installing and maintaining a separate motor. The vehicle remains compact and manoeuvrable. To drive the wood chipper, MAN offers its D26 engine series with outputs of 420 hp, 460 hp and 500 hp, in combination with the new TipMatic 12 Offroad gearbox. Beyond that, in the MAN TGX series, the D38 engines range from 520 hp to 640 hp. The 6x6 chassis in the MAN TGS series have excellent all-terrain capability so that they can reach chipping sites which are often away from tarmac roads. A very compact, manoeuvrable and high-traction chassis design is the 3-axle version with all-wheel drive on the front axle and articulated trailing axle. Its axle configuration is 6x4-4. An interesting feature is the extensive modifications to the driver cabs. This means there is no need for an extra cabin from which the operator controls the crane and the chipper. The MAN Truck Modification Centre has designed various modified cabs for this purpose. In the agricultural sector, transport tasks can be many and varied. MAN trucks can be used for transporting harvested crops, from grain to agricultural dealers, silo corn to the biogas plant, beet to the sugar refinery or potatoes to the starch plant, right from the edge of the field. In addition to this, utilising trucks for the short distances between farm, field or storage areas can also be worthwhile. They offer distinct advantages in the transportation chain compared to tractors with trailers, due to their higher payload of up to 40 tonnes, lower fuel consumption and the higher speeds typical of trucks. In most cases, these will be semitrailer tractors in the MAN TGS series, pulling trailers specially designed for agricultural use. The wide range of vehicles in the MAN product range ensures that the right vehicle for the topography, soil conditions and transport distance can always be found. There are traditional semitrailer tractors with rear wheel drive and standard or medium-high design height. All-wheel drive semitrailer tractors in high design height with switchable or permanent front wheel drive are also available. The solution which meets in the middle is called MAN HydroDrive, with hydrostatic front wheel drive for additional traction. The engines that are fitted in the MAN TGS range from 320 hp to 500 hp. Municipal & fire brigade sector Approximately 20 municipal vehicles for the refuse collection, winter service, road maintenance and fire brigade sectors were on display. The range of chassis versions - usually based on MAN TGM and TGS - and body manufacturers was equally varied. Among the sector-specific features offered by MAN, the TipMatic Collect is particularly important on refuse collector vehicles. The new automated gearbox incorporates gear shift strategies specifically designed for rear and side loaders. On the collecting round, frequent starts in order to drive just a few metres to the next collection point alternate with longer stops while the loading hydraulic system is working. The gearshift behaviour is faster and the moving-off gear is selected by the driver so the clutch is protected. On the chassis of the side loader based on the MAN TGS, the MAN engineers have changed the layout of the complex Euro 6 exhaust technology, the diesel and AdBluetank, and the compressed-air tank. In this way, they have made space to mount the side loading device. The snow blade, winter service spreader and loading crane are supplied by a high-performance hydraulic system. The air suspension on the rear axle that is standard on the all-wheel drive MAN TGM - with permitted gross weights from 14.1 to 15 tonnes - ensures that the de-icing agents are evenly spread. The MAN TGM also has a particularly small turning circle. This makes snow-clearing in built-up residential areas with many parked cars easier for drivers. At the Trucknology Days, MAN was demonstrating a suction dredger on a 4-axle MAN TGS 35.480 8x4-4 BL. Suction dredgers can be used, for example, on construction sites to dig holes and trenches or expose foundations, by municipal authorities to clear blocked drains, or in horticulture and agriculture for carefully exposing root balls. Space has to be found on the 3- or 4-axle carrier vehicle from the MAN TGS series for the ventilation system, the tank for the extracted material, the jib for the suction pipe and its extensions and the filter system for cleaning the suction air. The fans that create the vacuum are driven by the powerful vehicle engine from the D26 engine series, via the PTO. In most parts of Germany, fire brigades are still permitted to use vehicles meeting the Euro 5 emissions standard. MAN offers a range of chassis for emergency services vehicles, meeting different emissions standards. That is why MAN is guaranteeing that production of the engine in the D08 series that is used by fire brigades will continue in the Euro 5 version until at least 2020. This engine, which does not require any additives to clean the emissions, is used in the TGL and TGM series. This flexibility is reflected in the fact that emergency services vehicles in both Euro 5 and Euro 6 versions will be on display at the Trucknology Days. HydroDrive combined with TipMatic is also important for fire brigades and waste disposal companies as an additional product in the hydrostatic front-axle drive range. Typical vehicles for this combination are swap body trucks. A new feature for fire brigades is that the Emergency gearshift program for emergency services vehicles is also available with the new TipMatic in the MAN TGS and TGX series. The roomy crew cab, seating a maximum of seven people, is very popular with users of municipal and fire brigade vehicles. It is available in MAN TGL and TGM series vehicles. Its four-seater bench consists of a seat with individual backrests, headrests and three-point belts. Two seats with integrated breathing apparatus can easily be accommodated in this cab. This means the crew can equip themselves en route to the incident and no time is lost when on rescue or fire-fighting missions. MAN Trucknology Road Show Since 2008, the Trucknology Days have traditionally been the starting signal for the new truck demonstration fleet at the 'MAN Trucknology® RoadShow 2017'. Nearly 52 vehicles from the TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series will go on tour throughout Europe. They demonstrate the new features introduced in the 2017 model year in the interior and on the driveline. The complete vehicles with bodies or semitrailers will present a cross-section of the variety available in the distribution and long-haul transport, construction, heavy-duty transport, agriculture, forestry and municipal sectors. MAN sales organisations throughout Europe will present their fleets, painted in striking crimson, at events and demonstrations. Interested customers can arrange with their MAN salesperson to test drive these vehicles for several days. In this way, they can experience MAN's competence in the sector and see for themselves how efficiently and economically transport tasks can be dealt with. Trucks to go The ‘Trucks to go’ fleet was on show in front of the Truck Forum during the Trucknology Days. 15. Ford's health plan: Slim down inventory Automotive News / March 27, 2017 Cuts in production are expected, even if it means revenue will take a hit Ford Motor Co. is determined to avoid a glut of unsold cars and trucks piling up on dealer lots by trimming production -- even if U.S. vehicle volumes are relatively healthy compared with the rest of the industry. Ford had a 78 days supply of vehicles at the end of February, down 17 days compared with a month earlier. At the start of March, all but four of the company's nameplates had seen month-over-month declines in days supply, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Ford's sales were down 2.5 percent through February. Still, CFO Bob Shanks warned analysts and investors, "don't be surprised" if Ford cuts production or temporarily idles assembly lines across North America in the coming months. It's a strategy meant to avoid bloated inventory, but will also eat into revenue. "Closing a plant down for a week or reducing a shift reduces the amount of vehicles made and therefore reduces revenue," Dave Sullivan, manager of product analysis at forecasting firm AutoPacific, told Automotive News. "That's what makes it dangerous; when you know your revenue is what you push out the door. If there is no demand, you can continue to push, and that's when bad things happen." The likeliest candidates to see added downtime will be some of Ford's car plants, including Michigan Assembly in Wayne and Cuautitlan Assembly in Mexico. Ford's overall car inventory was at 73 days supply, down from 98 the month before. That's partly because of high incentives on many car models and recent added downtime. Late in 2016, Ford temporarily shuttered five factories in North America, including its Flat Rock Assembly Plant to cut down on Mustang stock. During the first week of 2017, Ford idled its Kansas City Assembly Plant as it tried to pare down its F-150 pickup and Transit van inventory. Sullivan suggested Kansas City could be due for more cuts, although F-series inventory fell from 108 days supply at the beginning of February to 97 days supply at the start of March, and Transit inventory dropped from 97 days to 77 days supply during that same stretch. The production-cut warning came as Shanks predicted Ford's first quarter will be especially impacted because of launch costs and other expenses. Ford said last week it expects a full-year pretax profit of $9 billion, down from $10.4 billion in 2016, as it invests in autonomous cars and new mobility services. The automaker expects earnings per share of 30 cents to 35 cents in the first quarter, down from the same period last year. The automaker still expects that its 2018 financials will rise, and be higher than the $10.4 billion it earned in 2016.
  16. U.S. attorney general: sanctuary cities may lose Justice Department grants Reuters / March 27, 2017 U.S. cities that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities may lose millions of dollars in grant money from the Justice Department, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said on Monday. So-called "sanctuary cities" help illegal immigrants avoid deportation by limiting cooperation with federal agencies, often by refusing to notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) when they plan to release an illegal immigrant from incarceration. President Donald Trump, who made a crackdown on illegal immigration a key part of his campaign, ordered the government to cut off funding to sanctuary jurisdictions in a Jan. 25 executive order. "Failure to deport aliens who are convicted of criminal offenses puts whole communities at risk, especially immigrant communities in the very sanctuary jurisdictions that seek to protect the perpetrators," Sessions said at a White House news briefing. The Justice Department grants typically are used to help police improve crime fighting techniques, buy new equipment and assist victims of crime. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has not yet named which jurisdictions they consider to be sanctuary cities but they include New York City and Los Angeles County, which all have policies that place restrictions on cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Sessions may find his ability to influence local decision-making through the Justice Department's purse to be limited, because only a fraction of the Justice Department’s grant dollars flow directly to the cities and counties that determine whether to cooperate with federal immigration agents. In the 2016 fiscal year, federal records show the Justice Department gave $1 billion to state governments and $430 million to nonprofit groups but only $136 million directly to city and county governments. Session said the Justice Department plans to award $4.1 billion in grant money in the current fiscal year. Sessions' statement drew swift pushback from New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who said his office would continue helping local governments "have the tools they need to protect their [illegal] immigrant communities." NO SANCTUARY STATES So far no state has adopted policies that prevent cooperation with immigration authorities. Last week, Maryland's Democratic-controlled House of Delegates approved legislation to bar police statewide from checking the immigration status of individuals they arrest or from keeping them locked up longer than otherwise warranted at the request of federal agents seeking to deport them. The state's Republican governor, Larry Hogan, has said he would veto the bill. "I strongly urge our nation's states and cities and counties to consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to enforce our immigration laws and to rethink these policies," Sessions said. He gave as an example Kate Steinle, who was shot to death in San Francisco two years ago by illegal immigrant Francisco Sanchez, who had already been deported five times and had seven felony convictions. Trump also cited the Steinle case during his campaign. The city had released Sanchez from custody in another case even though immigration authorities had filed a request that he be kept in custody until they could pick him up for removal, Sessions said. San Francisco may not be affected by the new Justice Department restrictions, as the city and county did not receive any funding from the department in the most recent fiscal year. However, Sessions' order could impact other sanctuary jurisdictions. New Orleans, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York City, which were all singled out as “possibly” noncompliant by the Justice Department’s inspector general last year, collectively received $15 million in the past fiscal year for projects including crime prevention, and a missing children’s task force. According to Trump’s executive order, Sessions would have to wait until the Homeland Security Department determines what constitutes a "sanctuary city" before he could decide whether to restrict funding. DHS last week published a list of 118 cities and counties that it deems uncooperative, although the agency has not finalized the list.
