  1. Iveco Trucks Press Release / September 22, 2016 Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President and Rainer Bomba, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, hands over keys for first LNG truck in Germany. Ludwig Meyer GmbH & Co. KG receives the first of 20 Iveco Stralis NP trucks at IAA 2016, representing the first step towards using a real alternative to diesel for logistics in Germany. Ludwig Meyer GmbH & Co. KG is a long-standing partner of Iveco, and has a long history of demonstrating innovation in the field of CNG and electric vehicles. The Friedrichsdorf-based company will soon be operating 20 Stralis NP trucks for the purposes of fresh food logistics and distribution in the Berlin area. Meyer Logistik is also co-ordinating the construction of a public LNG filling station on the east side of the Berliner Ring orbital motorway. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (BMVI) encouraged the purchase of the LNG truck fleet with 360,000 euros, thereby allowing the construction of the LNG refuelling station. Rainer Bomba, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, said at the hand-over: "LNG is a promising alternative to conventional fuel. Funded by the BMVI pilot project with Meyer Logistics, this deal is an important contribution in the field of new and clean drives for heavy trucks and LNG as a fuel source in Germany.” Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President, is delighted that the door to more sustainable logistics is now open in Germany, and adds: "Iveco is a leading technology developer in the natural gas sector. Our customers in Spain, Italy, the UK and the Netherlands are demonstrating that LNG is an equally reliable and efficient technology that has far less of an environmental impact than other fuels. The Stralis NP not only produces cleaner emissions, but is also extremely quiet. This makes the vehicle suitable for urban use and calms residents' concerns about noise”. Looking to the future of his company, Managing Director of Meyer Logistik, Matthias Strehl, sees "the use of alternative drives as an important building block in ensuring our future business success”. He adds: “Working as a development partner in the commercial vehicle industry, we regularly subject innovative drive concepts to practical tests, with the aim of finding a real alternative to diesel-powered trucks together with our partners." .
  2. Iveco Trucks Press Release / September 21, 2016 TÜV, leading European technical certification centre, validates that New Stralis TCO2 Champion can reduce fuel consumption by up to -11.2 %, and its TCO2 Live services can cut a further -10%. Iveco announced today at the IAA 2016 that the New Stralis XP achieved TÜV SÜD certification of an 11.2% reduction in fuel consumption, which accounts for more than 40% of the Total Cost of Ownership. For the first time, TÜV also validated the TCO2Live services. Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President, commented: “At Iveco we believe that Sustainability is the future of transport. The New Stralis TCO2 Champion and all the vehicles we are showing here at IAA 2016 are the result of our constant quest for high efficiency, low emissions and low Total Cost of Ownership. The New Stralis and its completely renewed driveline enable the fleet owner to optimise the driver’s influence on fuel consumption. This, together with the numerous fuel-saving features, delivers a dramatic improvement in fuel efficiency.” The first certificate issued by TÜV SÜD focuses on the product: it compares the New Stralis TCO2 Champion with the previous Stralis model MY2013 with the Stralis Efficiency Package, a series of features aimed at reducing TCO and in particular fuel use. The comparison shows an improvement in fuel consumption of up to -11.2 %. The second certificate concerns the fuel consultancy services in TCO2 Live (TCO2 Smart Report, TCO2 Advising and TCO2 Driving), and shows an improvement in fuel consumption up to-10%. The tests on the fuel consultancy services were made by using the same vehicle, the New Stralis, with the same route and the same drivers, with and without the support of Iveco’s fuel consultancy services. The drivers have been trained on which functionalities are on board, how to use them and how to drive in the most efficient and ecological way. Iveco TCO2 Live is a new modular portfolio of services that includes for the first time new-generation services and extends to fleet management and traditional after-sales activities. Three of these new services are based on fuel consultancy helping customers operate their New Stralis in the most fuel-efficient manner: TCO2 Smart Report, a weekly reporting on driving style and fuel consumption of each vehicle in the fleet; TCO2 Advising, advice on fuel saving by a Iveco local expert team saving based on the wealth of information collected through Iveco’s real-life truck analysis. Both can be integrated by TCO2 Driving, fuel-conscious driving style courses. The fuel savings validated by TÜV SÜD confirm the experience of selected customers from across Europe who took part in the Golden Trucks initiative: they tested seven New Stralis for 3 months and achieved fuel savings of up to 11% compared to the Stralis 2013. The two TÜV SÜD certifications and the Golden Trucks results are testament to Iveco’s commitment to sustainability and TCO, and show that the New Stralis delivers on its promise as the TCO2 Champion. .
  3. Daimler AG Press Release / September 21, 2016 World premiere: the all-electric and networked Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck World premiere: the new all-electric Fuso eCanter Connectivity at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: Mercedes-Benz Uptime service product prevents breakdowns, new FleetBoard store for apps, free FleetBoard Manager Efficiency at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: more powerful, more economical and even lower emissions Safety at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: first emergency brake assist with pedestrian detection and market launch of Sideguard Assist Mercedes-Benz Trucks for construction transport: new model variants and equipment levels Mercedes-Benz Unimog with crewcab: high-quality rear seating Mercedes-Benz Econic: the safety truck for urban construction transport Fuso Canter: world's bestselling light commercial vehicle now with further improvements At this year's IAA International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hannover (22 to 29 September 2016) the focus is on the megatrends of the future: digitalisation and e-mobility. The key to the sustainable and efficient logistics of the future is called connectivity. Logistics rely on a network of players, including trucks, manufacturers, customers, hauliers, infrastructure, other vehicles, workshops, bodybuilders and many more. Connectivity and the intelligent networking of trucks are now raising the haulage sector to a whole new level. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is raising the bar even further when it comes to connectivity. While the breakdown-free truck might have seemed a long way off at the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz Trucks are taking great strides towards this vision with the revolutionary Uptime service product. The new FleetBoard store for apps, which will make its debut at the IAA, provides useful apps made by, and for, the transport sector. FleetBoard will also offer all Mercedes-Benz Trucks customers a simple, fast and free route to connectivity. This is made possible by the new FleetBoard Manager app. Mercedes-Benz Trucks is linking the two megatrends digitalisation and e-mobility in the Urban eTruck. The vehicle is a spectacular vision of the networked and all-electric distribution truck of tomorrow. Fuso's eCanter is the third generation of the world's first fully electric-powered light commercial vehicle and is the first small-scale production run of electric Fuso trucks. The latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine offers improved performance and greater efficiency. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has approved the use of alternative fuels in the latest OM 470 and OM 471 engines, which are designed to use such fuels as standard. This year, Mercedes-Benz is also getting closer to the goal of accident-free driving. Active Brake Assist 4 is the first system of its type in the world to warn the driver of imminent collisions with moving pedestrians and simultaneously automatically initiate partial braking. Sideguard Assist with pedestrian detection will also be launched to market as the first assistance system that protects pedestrians and cyclists when trucks are turning. In short: Daimler Trucks is extending its lead as a pioneer in safety, economy and truck connectivity. World premiere: the all-electric and networked Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck The Urban eTruck illustrates the fascinating possibilities of connectivity, electric drive systems, future display and control technologies, telematics, and a largely self-sufficient power supply. The Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck defines the latest developments in all-electric vehicles in the heavy short-radius distribution sector. The triple-axle vehicle with a permissible gross weight of 26.0 t produces zero local emissions and runs silently, yet it is equal to a truck with an internal combustion engine in terms of load and performance, and, thanks to its innovative power supply, it is also economical. Electric truck with the performance of a diesel engine The Urban eTruck holds its own against similar internal combustion engine-powered trucks in every respect, even its weight. The additional weight stands at only 1700 kg. As the EU Commission is in favour of increasing the permissible gross vehicle weight of trucks with alternative drives by a maximum of 1.0 t, this will more or less cancel out the weight disadvantage of the electric drive. The outstanding features of the Urban eTruck include its drive with electrically powered rear axle and electric motors directly adjacent to the wheel hubs. Their maximum output is 2 x 125 kW, while torque is 2 x 500 Nm. The standard version of the axle has already proven itself in buses. The battery capacity of the Urban eTruck has a modular design. The basic arrangement is a battery pack consisting of lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 212 kWh. This results in a range of up to 200 km – normally enough for a typical day's delivery round. Connectivity meets e-mobility: intelligent energy management in the Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck The Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck uses the possibilities opened up by connectivity to create a seamlessly interconnected system that incorporates range and load management, vehicle information and peripheral data. The modular construction of the batteries is the first step towards perfecting the interaction between drive control and power supply management to maximise performance and range in short-radius distribution. The additions of Predictive Charge Management, proactive Predictive Powertrain Control cruise control and FleetBoard for urban distribution make the Urban eTruck suitable for everyday use. The innovative FleetBoard for urban distribution telematics service is the first to connect the telematics system with the drive control. It starts with the scheduling: instead of the conventional fixed delivery runs there is a flexible system. It ensures that all the planned haulage work can be completed by the vehicle fleet without overextending or underutilising the range of the trucks. The variables used include the pallet spaces in the trucks, the weight, the range and the driving times. Virtual monitoring intervenes if unforeseen events force the truck to the limits of its range. The driver is assisted by a revolutionary display and operation system, with two displays taking the place of standard instruments. The innovative central display shows the driver a wide range of information in an easily assimilated form. The focus is on detailed data and facts about the route, so the driver can see the bends on the road and any accelerating or braking manoeuvres ahead. The Urban eTruck can operate in three different modes, which optimise the way in which it is driven and the use of the energy available. On a standard journey, the Urban eTruck is set to 'auto'. It automatically adapts the 'auto', 'agile' and 'eco' settings to conditions within a certain target range. For special cases there is a power mode called 'agile', and for maximum range there is an 'eco' mode. A tablet provides the driver with additional information about the trip, as well as continually updated and precise details on range and batteries. These are presented on a local map with a clever graphic known as the 'range potato' and a target range. The calculations are based on the driving strategy, the three-dimensional map and the trip planning. Competitive total costs with smart energy services The power supply, the energy tariffs and the correct charging strategy are important factors for the overall economy of electric trucks, and Daimler has developed a solution for this, too. With smart energy services we determine the most economical solution for every application. Depending on individual circumstances, stationary battery storage units from Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH can further improve economic efficiency and enable quick recharging without overloading the power supply. The storage units consist of lithium-ion batteries, and the capacity can be adapted individually to the requirements of the fleet. The most straightforward way of supplying power to electric vehicles is also the most expensive. The energy bill will be lower with regulated charging and, where suitable, with the addition of a stationery battery storage unit. Whether a storage unit will improve economic efficiency further depends on the circumstances in each case, in particular the energy tariff and the vehicles' usage. A unit of this kind can be charged on a continual basis when electricity costs are at their lowest. The batteries for the truck fleet can then be charged as and when required. This means lower costs and better availability. Irrespective of whether a battery storage unit makes sense in each case, the costs of an electric vehicle in combination with smart energy solutions can be considerably lower than those of a conventional diesel truck, despite the higher purchasing price and the additional investment in the storage capacity. Innovative design with flowing lines The styling of the Urban eTruck is as innovative as its electric drive. It embodies the design philosophy of the Mercedes-Benz brand, which focuses on sensual purity – an expression that applies perfectly to the Urban eTruck. The contours of the driver's cab are sleek and fluid with minimal detailing and no visible joints. Across the roof, a three-dimensional spoiler connects the cab with the body of the truck. It has a wide vent at the front, which acts as the air inlet for the cooling unit concealed behind the spoiler, as used in the food industry, for example. Just like the roof spoiler, the aerodynamic skirting panels on the side of the cab fit almost flush with the body. The windscreen has been extended downwards. The mirror cams, that replace the conventional outside mirrors, are a distinctive feature on the truck. The conventional air inlet has been omitted from the Urban eTruck because of the electric drive. Instead, a Black Panel grille is the branding element that connects the truck with its environment. It is transparent and back-lit by high-resolution LEDs. A number of different visual scenarios are conceivable: the LEDs can be used to recreate the signature Mercedes-Benz diamond radiator grille, to indicate the operating status of the truck or to show the charge level of the batteries. Overall, the Urban eTruck represents the polarity between 'hot & cool' that is characteristic of Mercedes-Benz design. The sensual contouring of the lines is 'hot' and provides an exciting contrast to the highly technical 'cool' design features such as the embedded lighting, mirror cams and Black Panel grille. World premiere: the new all-electric Fuso eCanter The Fuso Canter E-Cell is now the Fuso eCanter. The new name represents the third generation of the world's first fully electric-powered light truck, and the small-scale production run is an important step on the way to full production. Technically, the eCanter is radically different from its predecessor and benefits from the extensive findings of customer trials with the second generation and the reduced costs of battery and component technology. It will be presented at the IAA International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles 2016. The Fuso eCanter's locally zero-emission drive will not only reduce the impact of exhaust and noise emissions on city centres, but will also be an economically attractive alternative to diesel engines. Thanks to lower technology costs the eCanter will be launched to market at a competitive price. Lower running costs compared to an equivalent diesel model mean that any additional expense can be repaid in less than three years. The new eCanter uses a permanent synchronous electric motor with an impressive output of 185 kW and torque of 380 Nm. Power is transferred to the rear axle by a standard single-speed transmission. The vehicle premiered at the IAA has a battery capacity of 70 kWh. Depending on the body, load and usage, a range of more than 100 km without stationary recharging is possible. The batteries are spread over five units, one centrally in the frame right behind the cab and two more on each side of the frame. They are water-cooled lithium-ion batteries that provide a long service life, high efficiency, especially at high ambient temperatures, and compact construction of the battery units. The eCanter's exceptional weight balance is worth highlighting. The chassis load capacity of the 7.49 t vehicle is 4.63 t including the body and load. Individual battery packs with three to six sets of batteries of 14 kWh each are planned for the upcoming small-scale production run. This allows the eCanter to be adapted to customer requirements with regards to range, price and weight. The concept is based on the results of customer tests that show that for some operators, payload is more important than range, while others are happy to sacrifice payload for longer range, i.e. more batteries. Equally adaptable are the charging options: up to 80 percent capacity within an hour with direct current at a quick charging station, or 100 percent in seven hours with alternating current. In the future, rapid charging with 170 kW will be possible, meaning 80 percent battery capacity in only half an hour. A standard Combo 2 plug (known as Combined Charging System) is used for charging. The results of a year-long fleet test with the second generation electric Canter have shown that around 1000 euros per 10 000 km can be saved with this vehicle compared to a diesel version. Coupled with a reduction in maintenance costs of around 30 percent, this makes the Fuso an economical solution for customers. The projected sales price means that any additional expense will be repaid in less than three years. These vehicles have proven their suitability for daily use in short-radius distribution and urban transport. The Fuso eCanter will have its world premiere at the IAA as a preview of the small-scale production run that will be delivered to customers in Europe, the USA and Japan as of 2017. The exhibition vehicle features a unique and attractive design, with LED headlamps and a distinct grille and bumper, and a redesigned interior including a central, removable tablet with connectivity functions. The wide comfort cab is painted in metallic blue, as are the fully-clad sides. A walk-on glass floor in the exhibition vehicle's box body offers a view of the drive unit and the batteries. While these design elements provide a vision of the eCanter's future, the technology is the same as in the small-scale production model. Connectivity at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: Mercedes-Benz Uptime service product prevents breakdowns, new FleetBoard store for apps, free FleetBoard Manager Reliability and availability are the top priority for truck operators – the ideal truck runs without any breakdowns. Mercedes-Benz Uptime applies intelligent connectivity to bring the Actros, Arocs and Antos close to this ideal. With Uptime, Mercedes-Benz is opening up a new chapter in truck reliability and maintenance. The new service product Mercedes-Benz Uptime uses connectivity to increase vehicle availability Mercedes-Benz Uptime continuously monitors the vehicle systems via the new FleetBoard Truck Data Center. This covers all the truck's systems that are equipped with sensors, the fill level of service fluids, and all technology for which there is information available in the CAN data bus system. When repair or maintenance work is needed, the truck sends this information automatically via the FleetBoard telematics system to the Mercedes-Benz Service server. The server analyses the data based on stored algorithms, creates a fault diagnosis in real time and then passes it to the Mercedes-Benz service organisation together with specific recommended courses of action. The service organisation contacts the customer, passes on the recommendations and, if required, finds a workshop and takes care of the organisational matters. The entire process is fully automated. Within minutes of the output of an error code or a warning about a possible future defect, the customer is informed accordingly and has a qualified recommended course of action at his or her disposal. Mercedes-Benz Uptime comprises three services: avoidance of breakdowns, efficient management of repairs and maintenance and real-time support for repair measures by customers. When a truck is subject to an acute risk of breakdown, the Customer Assistance Centre (CAC) in Maastricht, Netherlands, is informed immediately. The CAC then makes a telephone call to the designated customer contact. When immediate repair is necessary, a stop-off at a workshop along the truck's planned route is agreed. The CAC locates service centres, clarifies their available time slots and even checks whether the workshops have the required parts in stock. A suitable workshop can be commissioned to carry out the repair work and prepared in advance. In addition, repair and maintenance requirements which are identified in good time are relayed automatically to the Mercedes-Benz service partner selected by the customer. The service partner bundles the work due and contacts the customer to arrange an appointment which is scheduled to fit in with the trip planning and maintenance requirements. In many instances poor driving or a failure to carry out maintenance can increase wear to the vehicle and result in damage or a breakdown. Examples include not carrying out particulate filter regeneration, not refilling service fluids such as AdBlue or constantly running on low tyre pressure. In these scenarios, Mercedes-Benz Uptime provides specific recommended courses of action directly to the customer, avoiding unnecessary workshop visits and costs. Mercedes-Benz Uptime will be available to order as of IAA 2016 for all new Actros, Arocs and Antos trucks. Its launch will begin in 12 European countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Further countries are to be added in due course. World premiere of the FleetBoard store at the IAA: the new marketplace for apps Daimler FleetBoard will celebrate the world premiere of the new FleetBoard store for apps at the IAA International Commercial Vehicle Show 2016. The launch will include prototypes of 14 apps. The platform is open by design, allowing industry partners – such as bodybuilders – and app developers to contribute useful apps that increase the efficiency of the haulage sector as a whole. The apps in the FleetBoard store can be used not only in Mercedes-Benz trucks, but also in vehicles of other brands. The apps can access real-time data and run on FleetBoard's removable DispoPilot.guide driver tablet. Everyone involved benefits from the integration of partner apps: customers, who receive relevant solutions for their company via one platform and on a single device; partners, who are able to digitalise their business and make apps available to 180 000 vehicles; and developers, who have a new, innovative environment for developing apps. The inspiration is a vision of the end-to-end networking of all traffic in the future. FleetBoard will be showcasing examples of the apps available in the FleetBoard store at the IAA together with its partners Brugg Lifting, Continental, Dautel, DKV, ETM-Verlag, Palfinger, Schmitz Cargobull, Truck Parking Europe, UTA and Uvauvau. The lashing app by Brugg Lifting makes it easier for the driver to calculate how to secure the cargo, minimises problems with the cargo and helps to reduce costs. With the ContiPressureCheck app from Continental users can immediately respond to loss of tyre pressure or overheating tyres. This helps to prevent breakdowns, reduce fuel consumption and lower costs. The conical heap app by Dautel makes unloading bulk materials easier, saves on rectification work, and therefore time, and increases the cost-efficiency of the company. The DKV app keeps the driver informed of partner filling stations and their prices along the route, so the driver can refuel at the cheapest rate, increasing the cost-efficiency of the company. The Eurotransport app by EuroTransportMedia Verlags- und Veranstaltungs-GmbH keeps the driver updated with the latest news and trends from the haulage sector. The Palfinger app provides an overview of the status of Palfinger equipment and allows for efficient service scheduling, direct contact to the service partner and a reduction in downtime. Schmitz Cargobull's TrailerConnect app provides mobile information about the trailer, enabling an immediate reaction to problems and reducing both downtime and costs. The Truck Parking Europe app makes the annoying search for a parking space a thing of the past by showing free spaces along the route. This saves time, makes the scheduling of rest times more efficient and increases driver safety. The FuelGuide app by UTA makes timely and cost-efficient refuelling easier, without needing to worry about diesel prices or suitable tanking intervals. The prUVV app is an identification management system for verifying documents, people, processes and products in line with internal auditing requirements. This app enables the automatic, fast and secure implementation of work processes for which verification is required and reduces the liability of fleet owners. The uvauvau app allows business owners to send information such as driver manuals, training (in accordance with accident prevention regulations), instructions or operation manuals to their drivers' DispoPilot.guide tablet in line with internal auditing requirements. Besides third-party apps, the FleetBoard store also features apps from Daimler Trucks and FleetBoard. The CuCo (Customized Connectivity) app from FleetBoard makes drivers' daily work easier by providing reminders and assistance, and allows distribution managers and drivers to concentrate on their core tasks. The SpaceSnap app from FleetBoard supports the planning and optimal use of the existing load capacity, improving the profitability of trips and reducing their environmental impact. The ParkMyTruck app from Daimler Trucks makes it easier for drivers to plan their rest periods, safeguards against exceeding driving times and helps to avoid fines for illegal parking. Downloading apps is simple: customers select one or more apps from the FleetBoard store from the comfort of their office and install them over-the-air on the removable DispoPilot.guide tablets – to a single truck, several trucks or even a whole fleet. The installation is done remotely so there are no periods where the vehicle is out of service. Drivers can operate the apps via the DispoPilot.guide tablet in their truck. The driver's tablet may become the only device in the vehicle in the future, as its apps display all relevant information about the driver, the vehicle and the assignment. The new FleetBoard Developer Portal is the place where interested partners and developers can find all relevant information on the FleetBoard store and the app submission process. All apps available in the FleetBoard store undergo a stringent quality assurance process to ensure they comply with FleetBoard's safety standards. Customers will be able to access the FleetBoard store from 2017. The market launch will start in Germany, with further countries to follow in due course. The FleetBoard store will be available in German and English. New FleetBoard Manager: helpful information on the vehicle fleet available any time – simple, fast and free FleetBoard will offer all Mercedes-Benz Trucks customers a simple, fast and free route to connectivity. This is made possible by the new FleetBoard Manager app, which requires the new FleetBoard Truck Data Center to be installed in the vehicle. The FleetBoard Manager provides customers with useful information on their fleet, such as the total number of kilometres driven over the last seven days, and a comparison to the previous seven days. It also shows the vehicles with the highest and lowest mileage. This data enables customers to see exactly how fleet capacity has been used over the course of a week. Alongside the mileage it also shows the fleet's average fuel consumption, split into road consumption and stationary consumption, with and without auxiliary consumers. It also shows the vehicles with the highest and lowest fuel consumption. This provides customers with an insight into the spread of mileage and fuel consumption between the vehicles. At fleet level, the app also shows how economically the vehicles perform when out on the road. The overview is shown as a simple cluster of scores that is very straightforward to understand. FleetBoard uses this data to calculate the percentage saving in fuel that could be achieved across the whole fleet by targeted driver training – important information that can help to identify further cost-saving potential. The app also reveals how eco-friendly the fleet's movements are, as well as the level of its CO2 emissions. This is where predictive driving plays an important role in highlighting opportunities to improve fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The FleetBoard Manager also allows customers to see the position of individual vehicles. The updating of the vehicle position is based on events such as the start of a trip. In order to ensure fleet availability and to plan maintenance in good time, FleetBoard Manager displays the current vehicle status and the next planned service. This overview of the vehicle status provides information about any repairs that might be necessary, which the driver can undertake quickly and easily in order to keep the truck safely on the road. Efficiency at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: more powerful, more economical and even lower emissions Even lower fuel consumption and emissions, even more flexible and, with a new top-of-the-range variant, even more powerful: the latest generation of the Mercedes-Benz OM 470 engine boasts enhanced performance all-round. It follows the ongoing development of the larger OM 471 which was introduced last year. The six-cylinder in-line OM 470 engine with a displacement of 10.7 l is the most compact of the heavy-duty engines from Mercedes-Benz. It is the engine of choice when compact construction, low weight, high performance, good pulling power, maximum efficiency, low fuel consumption and long maintenance intervals are required. The new top-of-the-range variant has a power output of 335 kW (456 hp) and powerful torque of 2200 Nm. The OM 470 is available in five versions from 240 kW (326 hp), suitable for heavy short-radius distribution, long-distance haulage and construction traffic. Fuel injection, exhaust gas recirculation and turbocharger are new Fuel injection continues to be based on the X-Pulse injection system with common rail and pressure boosting in the injector. However, the maximum rail pressure has been raised from 900 bar to 1160 bar. This results in an injection pressure of up to 2700 bar. There is also a new injection nozzle, a reshaped combustion chamber and higher compression. The steep increase in torque and performance means a lower rated speed of only 1600 rpm and a more responsive engine. Improved exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) management reduces the EGR rate and lowers fuel consumption. An asymmetric injection optimises exhaust gas quality. Also new is the supremely efficient turbocharger manufactured inhouse. The pilot-actuated operation means that the wastegate valve, the boost pressure control, EGR sensor and EGR control are no longer needed, reducing complexity and increasing robustness. The trucks also benefit from fuel-efficient engine oils, redeveloped gear boxes and a refined driving strategy from the Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) cruise control. As a result of the different measures undertaken, the savings vary for each engine – but they are certainly noticeable for all engine variants. The changes to the engine and drivetrain mean fuel consumption is reduced by up to five percent in an Actros with the OM 470 engine. The effect of the current improvements in addition to previous changes to the engine leads to a reduction of up to six percent in an Actros with the OM 471 engine. The large OM 473 with 15.6 l displacement benefits from redeveloped fuel injection with up to three percent lower fuel consumption. Engines approved for alternative fuels Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), Biomass to Liquid (BtL), Gas to Liquid (GtL) and Coal to Liquid (CtL) are alternative fuels according to the prEN 15940 standard, made from a range of resources which are converted to fuels through chemical processes. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has approved them for use in the latest OM 470 and OM 471 engines. The compatibility of these fuels has been confirmed in comprehensive tests and the engines are designed for them as standard. All fuel sub-groups of the prEN 15940 standard are essentially equivalent to diesel fuel made from mineral oil, so no changes whatsoever are required to the engines or their peripherals. The injection process, fuel lines and seals remain unchanged. The same is also true of the intervals for oil changes and for cleaning the particulate filter, and the warranty and guarantee continue to apply without restrictions. The output and torque data remain the same. Trucks from Mercedes-Benz fitted with the first generation of the Euro VI OM 470 and OM 471 engines as well as the medium-duty OM 936 and OM 934 engine series have already been able to run on prEN 15940 standard fuels since February 2016. Safety at Mercedes-Benz Trucks: first emergency brake assist with pedestrian detection and market launch of Sideguard Assist The next chapter in the success story of Mercedes-Benz's emergency brake assistant is unfolding with Active Brake Assist 4 (ABA 4). Its USP is that it warns the driver of imminent collisions with moving pedestrians and simultaneously automatically initiates partial braking. It is the first system of its type in the world to perform such functions. This enables the driver to avoid a collision by means of emergency braking or a steering manoeuvre. The driver can additionally warn endangered pedestrians by sounding the horn. ABA 4: the first emergency brake assist with pedestrian detection Active Brake Assist 4 is an enhancement of the tried and tested Active Brake Assist 3 system. In addition to functions familiar from Active Brake Assist 3, i.e. emergency stop when moving or stationary obstacles are detected within the system boundaries, Active Brake Assist 4 also detects moving pedestrians in almost all traffic situations, for example when they cross the truck's path, step out from behind an obstacle or are moving along the carriageway. Pedestrians are also detected within radar range when the vehicle is turning. The automated alerts and braking initiated by pedestrian detection are active up to a speed of 50 km/h. Active Brake Assist 4 with pedestrian detection is based on next-generation radar technology. This is also used in the current passenger cars from Mercedes-Benz, demonstrating the close cooperation within the group. The advantage of a radar system is that it operates independently of the prevailing light conditions and also largely independently of weather conditions. Radar determines distances and relative speeds extremely precisely, and is also able to 'see' at night and in rain and fog. Like Active Brake Assist 3, Active Brake Assist 4 with pedestrian detection will be available for all Mercedes-Benz long-haul transport models from December 2016. Market launch of the first truck with Sideguard Assist Right turns in urban traffic are among the least pleasant tasks for truck drivers, who are required to heed traffic lights and signs ahead while simultaneously observing oncoming and crossing traffic and keeping an eye on pedestrians and cyclists at the side. In addition, the traffic situation can alter in a matter of seconds, and cyclists and pedestrians are not always aware that a truck driver may not be able to see them. Mercedes-Benz's response has been to introduce Sideguard Assist with pedestrian detection. It works in several stages. If there is a moving or stationary object in the side monitoring zone the driver initially gets a visual warning. An LED in the shape of a triangle lights up at the driver's eye level in the A-pillar on the co-driver's side. It intuitively attracts the driver's attention to the situation alongside the vehicle and in the direction of the exterior mirrors on the co-driver's side. If there is a risk of a collision, an additional visual and audible warning is triggered: the LED flashes brightly several times in red. After two seconds it remains permanently lit in red. At the same time an alarm sounds on the side where the collision is imminent. If the sensors additionally detect a stationary obstacle such as a traffic light or street lamp in the tracking pattern of the truck during the process of turning, there is also a visual and audible warning. This helps to avoid collisions – not only on public roads, but also during manoeuvring, e.g. in parking areas. The tracking pattern alert is active up to a speed of 36 km/h. At the core of Sideguard Assist are two short-range radar sensors on the bodywork in front of the truck's rear axle on the co-driver's side. The side monitoring zone has a width of 3.75 m. The system is designed to cover the entire length of the truck. This applies to both semitrailer tractor and full tractor/trailer combinations up to 18.75 m in length. The monitoring zone even extends by two metres beyond the front of the truck and one metre behind the end of the semitrailer or tractor. Sideguard Assist will be available from December 2016, initially for the left-hand-drive Mercedes-Benz Actros and Antos as a 4x2 semitrailer tractor and as a 6x2 chassis. This will cover the majority of heavy short-range distribution vehicles. Mercedes-Benz Trucks for construction transport: new model variants and equipment levels Occasionally, the Mercedes-Benz Arocs might find construction sites and entrances a bit of a squeeze. The new ClassicSpace LowRoof cab in M and L versions and a width of 2300 mm is 100 mm lower than the previous variant. With the OM 470 engine, the 320 mm engine tunnel and the ClassicSpace LowRoof, the roof height is even reduced by 280 mm. The Climate Pack is available around the world for all M and L cabs. It comprises automatic air conditioning, a heating package and a new stationary air conditioner. It is available as a stand-alone extra for all engine tunnel variants. The Arocs featuring the SoloStar Concept and its generous rest area for the StreamSpace and BigSpace cabs is very comfortable. The Home Line and Style Line design and equipment lines are also available for the Arocs. The Arocs also has new suspension and powertrain options. From the end of 2016 the electrically supported Servotwin steering will be available for the Arocs 8x4 with four axles and for other wheelbases. The engageable hydraulic front wheel drive HAD (Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive) is now available in variants with a 3300 mm wheelbase and can be used to transport hazardous goods. New for the Arocs with HAD is the 320 mm engine tunnel and the bulk goods cover for the M (medium-length) cab. Drivers needing to move off very carefully or who manoeuvre at low speeds should choose the turbo retarder clutch (TRC). It can now be combined with Proximity Control Assist and Active Brake Assist in all Arocs 6x4 chassis with air suspension and front underride protection. Together with the OM 471 engine an additional power take-off up to 80 kW can be realised in combination with the TRC. From early 2017 a new factory-fitted tilting hydraulics package is available for the twin-axle Arocs 4x2 semitrailer tractors. This will also be available for the Arocs 4x4 from mid-2017. The hydraulic system is configured as a single or dual-circuit system depending on intended use. The Arocs also leads the way in terms of safety. An optional tyre pressure monitoring system with a new display concept is now available that displays the precise pressure required, depending on the outside temperature. Most importantly, the twin and triple-axle Arocs is now available with the optional new Active Brake Assist 4 with pedestrian detection. Actros 4x2 with tipper semitrailer body increases the payload For construction vehicles with a focus on road transport, Mercedes-Benz has developed an Actros as a 4x2 LS semitrailer tractor. The key deployment area for the tipper body is transporting bulk goods with a total weight of up to 44.0 t. The semitrailer tractor features six centimetres more ground clearance and is available with an optional pivoting step. It weighs up to 150 kg less than an equivalent Arocs 4x2. The semitrailer tractor is available with 320 mm and 170 mm engine tunnels and the OM 936, OM 470 and OM 471 engines in all output ratings. Mercedes-Benz Unimog with crewcab: first-class rear seating The new extreme all-terrain Unimog U 4023 and U 5023 are now available with a crewcab. The four-door Unimog comes with a rear bench seat for four people as standard, however, if desired two individual air-sprung seats can be fitted instead. With this configuration there is room for up to five people, including the driver. The U 5023 on show at the IAA is designed for drivers who need manpower even in the remotest of locations. Whether in open-cast mining or in other locations where access is difficult, the deployment areas of engineering crews, survey teams or research groups are not always by the nearest accessible road. Even with the additional seats there is still enough space to attach a variety of body types or to transport material, tools or machinery on the platform. Wide-opening doors on either side behind the front axle and entry via three adjustable steps make access to the rear seating easy. Tools and work material can be safely stored in the three generous compartments beneath the hinged rear bench seat, so the passengers' personal equipment is ready to hand at any time. Even with a full complement of seven passengers the powerful integrated air conditioning ensures that the air in the cab is clean and fresh. It replaces the roof-mounted system of previous models. Driving off-road is made more comfortable thanks to the low-vibration three-point suspension of the cab and plenty of headroom that leaves enough space even when wearing helmets. This is particularly important as the crewcab variant of the off-road Unimog is often used by fire services. Other customer groups include power utilities, open-cast mining companies, and overland travellers. With its innovative body design the crewcab weighs only 120 kg more than a standard cab, so there is hardly any impact on payload. With the exception of the power take-off, all other advantages of the new extreme all-terrain Unimog are retained in the crewcab version. Besides the extreme all-terrain Unimog with crewcab, which makes its debut at the IAA, there is a further new addition to the Unimog stable, the Unimog U 323 with an engine output of 170 kW (231 hp). The new top model of the mid-range series offers excellent performance and is available with a 3000 mm and 3600 mm wheelbase and a permissible gross vehicle weight of up to 14.0 t. High permissible axle loads make the U 323 an efficient vehicle solution for winter service operations and haulage work. It has a wide range of optional extras that customers already know and appreciate from the U 423, such as the AutomaticShift fully automatic transmission, the power take-off for mounting equipment and several hydraulic options. Mercedes-Benz Econic: the safety truck for urban construction transport The Mercedes-Benz Econic, a specialised commercial vehicle for municipal use and short-radius distribution, is embarking on a new career as a construction vehicle. It is ideally suited to urban construction transport thanks to its low height, excellent visibility, low entry point and ease of operation. The deep panoramic windscreen, large windows on the driver's side and fully glazed folding door on the co-driver's side give the driver an optimal view. The optionally available blind-spot camera system, comprising an in-cab monitor and four cameras mounted on the vehicle, allows the driver to see the areas which are not directly visible. The driver can actuate the cameras manually or automatically. In automatic mode, the images displayed depend on activation of the turn signal indicators, steering angle, selected gear or vehicle speed. From January 2017 the left-hand drive Econic will be available with the new Mercedes-Benz Sideguard Assist as an optional extra. It will also come with an interface for a rear area monitoring system. If a collision is imminent, it can even perform an automatic emergency stop. The Econic already comes with Active Brake Assist 3 as standard. The radar-controlled system automatically performs an emergency stop after an optical and acoustic alarm has warned the driver of an imminent collision with a moving or stationary obstacle and the brakes have been partially applied. Other safety systems are already in development and will gradually become available next year. The objective of this move is to prevent accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists, as well as accidents while moving off or manoeuvring. Fuso Canter: world's bestselling light commercial vehicle now with further improvements The production version of the Fuso Canter on show at the IAA has been noticeably upgraded. The world's best-selling light commercial vehicle covers the range from 3.5 t to 8.55 t permissible gross vehicle weight. The upgrade includes a new colour concept for the interior with functional black, high-quality flooring and chrome trim in the cockpit. From a technical point of view the focus is on the second generation of the Duonic double clutch transmission. A new shift strategy saves fuel, and the new clutch further increases the longevity of the robust Canter. All Canter with Duonic now feature a hill holder as standard and optional cruise control. The engines in all Canter now comply with the Euro VI emissions standard, combined with SCR technology. Also new is the Canter 7C18 model variant with a 2800 mm wheelbase. It is perfect for use on construction sites, where short bodies need to be combined with high payload, good engine power and high manoeuvrability. The Canter is also embarking on a new career as a fire-fighting vehicle. As bodybuilders have lowered the seat surface, the Canter crewcab now meets DIN firefighting and fire protection standards and can be used as a fire-extinguishing vehicle for the whole team. Key here is the vehicle's versatility with single and crew cabs and 4x2 and 4x4 drive.
  4. MAN launches “RIO” open cloud-based operating system for transportation industry MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 · The new brand RIO bundles digital solutions of the transportation & logistics ecosystem · Open platform also includes vehicles of competitors · Significant increase in efficiency and transparency in the field of transportation · MAN is first sponsor of RIO and is responsible for developing the brand within the Volkswagen Truck & Bus Group. It is a first that all players in the supply chain — shippers, dispatchers, carriers, drivers and recipients — will be connected with a uniform information and application system including forecasting features. Thanks to intelligent algorithms, RIO combines different sources of data and then analyzes them. Based on the combined information from tractors, trailers, bodies, drivers, and orders as well as combining this information with traffic, weather, or navigation data, RIO will provide its users with concrete recommendations for action in real time. This will significantly improve the transportation and reloading process. It will also significantly increase efficiency and transparency in the transportation ecosystem. Operating system" for the global supply chain To this date, harnessing data within the transportation industry is often times not possible due to the players involved who use different software systems e.g. different cargo and vehicle management systems. RIO is the first to offer a common platform and thus one that can be used regardless of the vehicle brand or telematics system. This means that fleet customers with mixed fleets can only use digital services in one single solution. In addition, all vehicle types can be refitted without any difficulties. Systems that already exist and that are used as single solutions — e.g. for managing vehicle data, maintenance, keeping spare parts in stock or at the driver's disposition — can be transferred to a common platform. Andreas Renschler, CEO of Volkswagen Truck & Bus, comments: "Rio will fundamentally change the world of transportation as we know it. For the first time, our unified platform enables the registration, management, and integrated use of all data and information available in the transportation system. That is beneficial for our customers because it makes their business more profitable. And it is good for the environment, because we will see fewer empty trucks on the road. RIO will already be available in a few months. The future of transportation does not begin in 2025, but right here and now." RIO is based on an MAN initiative and is managed by MAN's Digital Solutions fuction. The aim is to increase its customer's profitability. "What we can see emerging here is a platform where each user will benefit individually from its added value — regardless of how the fleet looks, which vehicle with which body is carrying the sales order, and which logistics software is used," says Joachim Drees, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus AG and Member of the Board of Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH. He emphasizes: "Logistics 4.0 can only succeed if artificial barriers and data islands are overcome. That is why we are making every effort to support the development of RIO." As of spring 2017, new MAN trucks will be equipped with RIO as standard; in addition, any Scania customer can connect with the platform on request. Using a refit box, any vehicle can be integrated into the network with an FMS interface. Here, RIO automatically receives updates at any time and easily via the cloud. Updates will be carried out around 40 times per year Digitization made easy — RIO leads the way through the data jungle RIO is not only interesting for operators of large fleets. Especially for small and medium-sized transportation companies, RIO provides the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of digitization without the need to have strong IT skills or specially trained experts. Similar to operating systems of smartphones, various apps can be used with RIO that are intuitive in their operation and run in any standard web browser. There will be vehicle-specific services — e.g. from MAN or Scania — but also a marketplace for cross-vendor apps or those of third - party providers. Another special feature of RIO is a consistent user interface across all functions: Here the focus was not only on easy recognizability; a particular focus was to meet demand by providing to the different stakeholders of the ecosystem an intuitive interface and subsequently ensuring broad user acceptance. Markus Lipinsky, Chief Digital Officer at MAN and responsible for RIO, explains: "It is not about launching another telematics system. Instead, we deliberately designed RIO as an open platform that brings together the numerous island solutions. I am convinced that one technology company alone cannot master the complexity of the logistics industry. We are therefore looking for as many partners as possible with the same objective: to optimize the global transportation chain, thereby reducing costs and emissions." The initial partners of RIO are i.a. Continental, Schmitz Cargobull, Krone, Meiller, and TomTom. Microlise, Telogis, and Idem have been our solution partners from the start here, and BNS and LIS are our software partners. In addition, RIO is working with start- ups such as Synfioo, Park Here, and Loadfox. Examples of future applications Driver's Connectivity — The app sends relevant in formation to the driver's smartphone, such as new transportation orders. Following one click, the app directly navigates to the customer. Truck Share is a feature for shared - economy requirements. Vehicles can be handed over with a digital access key. Directly on the smartphone. Loadfox is an app for the smart order management of partial loads. Thanks to this app, trucks can be better utilized by assigning additional cargo along the route of only partially loaded trucks. This reduces the amount of traffic, increases efficiency, and helps cut emissions. These and many other features will be demonstrated by RIO at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. The scope of the apps will be diverse from the beginning: ranging from truck-sharing, driver coaching, and optimized utilization of the vehicles to the community for truckers — from DTCO download to geo-fencing. www.my-rio.de MAN will present the new RIO brand in the Innovation Area at the IAA using a Connectivity Truck, which is a TGX 18.560 tractor with a semi-trailer that displays information about the new brand on a holographic projection screen. The Connectivity Truck also features a further innovation in the form of a prototype camera-based mirror replacement system, offering a first glimpse of developments that we might see in MAN trucks in the future. 6. Volkswagen Truck and Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 Brazil-based Volkswagen Truck and Bus is showcasing the success of its 'tailor-made concept' at the IAA 2016 in Hanover. The trucks sold by Volkswagen, as well as its selling and servicing arrangements, are always guided by the slogan "You don't want less, you don't need more." It is for this reason that the Brazilian commercial vehicle manufacturer continually monitors the demand trends within its markets and segments, keeping an eye out for developments in application solutions, in order to ensure that it can offer excellent, forward-thinking solutions at every step of the process. Volkswagen is celebrating its 35th birthday and the 20-year anniversary of its Resende plant in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Celebrations will commence at the IAA with vehicles on display that focus on technology, sustainability and connectivity. The overriding premise is to offer environmentally friendly transport solutions with robust vehicles for sustainable use in emerging nations, while also maintaining a focus on power, technology and connectivity. VW Constellation 24.280: The market leader comes with CNG power The VW Constellation 24.280, the flagship and market-leading product in Brazil for eight years running, will be appearing at the trade fair with a CNG drive system, which is a sustainable addition to the conventional diesel engines on offer. Estimates for the prototype envisage a 20% reduction in nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions compared with certifiable diesel engines in Brazil, which is compliant with the Euro 6 emissions standard and surpasses the current Euro 5 standard. With a range of up to 200 kilometres, the gas storage tank doesn't change the load capacity of the truck in comparison to the diesel version. The maximum load is 12.5 tonnes. Using beverage logistics as an example, this amounts to ten pallets each weighing 1,250 kilograms or a total of 9,400 bottles. With regard to its most important technical specifications, the VW Constellation 24.280 stands out thanks to its MAN E0836 280 hp engine with manual 6-gear shifting system and 'SmartRatio' driveline technology. This has been fully developed and patented by Volkswagen engineers in Resende. It uses the two axle transmission ratios on the dual-speed axle to multiply the gearbox potential. VW Constellation 25.420 Prime: environmentally friendly and powerful A further highlight of MAN Latin America's appearance at the trade fair will be the VW Constellation 25.420 6x2 Prime, the anniversary model to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the successful Constellation heavy truck range, the market leader in the Brazilian truck market. The most powerful vehicle in the Volkswagen truck portfolio is fitted with a Cummins ISL 9-litre engine, which produces over 420 hp and 1,850 Nm of torque. The 16-gear V-Tronic ZF automatic transmission results in significant fuel savings, thus increasing productivity and profitability during use. The reduced overall weight is one of the model’s greatest advantages, as the maximum load has been increased by one tonne in comparison with its major competitors. Alongside a significant change in the interior, exclusive colours, automatic V-Tronic gearbox and other high-quality details, the exhibited model has a strong focus on environmental aspects. The environmentally friendly driver compartments are made of up to 18% recycled plastic components, thus succeeding in making the vehicle more sustainable overall. The new design results in a weight reduction of 12 kg. VW Volksbus 18.280: optimised for biofuel from sugar cane In the passenger transport sector, Volkswagen will be showcasing a very 'Brazilian' solution at the IAA: the “Volksbus” 18.280 OT LE which is compatible with biofuel obtained from sugar cane. The completely air-sprung chassis with its powerful, 280 hp MAN 6-cylinder D08 EGR engine and ZF Ecolife automatic gearbox has been developed for use with renewable fuels, with a view to reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions by 30-70%. The VW Volksbus 18.280 has capacity for 40 passengers. Telemetry: new means of reducing emissions Volkswagen has expanded the functionality of its Volksnet system. It has introduced a telematics system for fleet management, monitoring and vehicle tracking, which has been specially developed for Volkswagen. The exclusive CO2 emissions report allows the vehicle's CO2 output to be measured in order to make an active contribution towards achieving sustainability targets. More and more companies are demanding this information from their suppliers. The graph displaying the results of any fleet vehicle can be used to track, compare and verify the impact of the implemented programme over time. One of the principle innovations of the telematics system is that you are informed of the truck's efficiency in real time, either on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis or across the entire fleet. This also takes into account the run times of the air conditioning system, slow-moving traffic and more significant contraventions during the journey. Volksnet is an integrated tool geared towards boosting productivity and reducing costs. Initial tests have recorded savings of up to 20%. The system also helps to control emissions, a subject of fundamental global importance. .

  8. New infotainment radios: the top-of-the-range model MMT Advanced MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 From mid-2016, new infotainment systems with larger displays and refined sound will be available in the MAN TGX, TGS, TGM, TGL and TGS WorldWide. The top-of-the-range model is the MAN Multimedia Truck Advanced, boasting a 7-inch display, DAB+ (digital radio reception), convenient telephony and enhanced, truck-specific navigation. Sound sources: streaming, SD cards, cable How do you connect your favourite soundtrack or audio book to the sound system? The new infotainment systems offer a wide range of possibilities for this. The wireless streaming function has been enhanced, meaning that you can use your own tablet, smartphone or laptop with Bluetooth functionality as easily in the truck as at home, giving you access to your own extensive music library. Devices connected via Bluetooth can also be operated via the controls in the MMT Advanced, allowing you to leave your smartphone in your pocket and operate the device safely. Smartphones and tablets can also be charged up via the USB port next to the shelf in the instrument panel (optional), and music can be played directly via the USB port using a memory stick or external hard drive. The memory card slots offer an additional option: the MMT Advanced has two Micro SD slots, providing enough space for both the navigation memory card and a music memory card at the same time. The MMT automatically reads the various standard digital music inputs. Music can also be played via a 3.5 mm stereo jack cable. The sound system offers a high-quality audio experience and, in the full equipment version, includes two woofers, two tweeters and a subwoofer. To achieve the perfect sound, the acousticians have specially fitted the new MMT with the right sound system for each cab size. Convenient telephony and voice control The MMT's enhanced Bluetooth functionality allows two telephones to be connected to the MMT simultaneously, for example a business and a personal phone. The priority telephone can be operated safely and ergonomically while driving, via the multi-function steering wheel and the MMT. The driver can access telephone data (e.g. the phone book or call list) via the infotainment system. The truck's integrated microphone and voice transmission via the vehicle loudspeaker ensure excellent voice quality for telephone calls. This is also helped by the system's high-quality echo and noise reduction function. The MMT's integrated voice control allows the driver to operate the radio navigation system via voice commands. For example, navigation destinations can be given or telephone contacts selected, and the driver can continue to focus on the road. Digital radio DAB+ In addition to standard VHF radio functions, the MMT Advanced enables digital radio programmes to be received (DAB = Digital Audio Broadcasting). Digital radio transmission has many benefits, such as the highest sound quality, more available stations, and reliable transmission of a station without interruption on the motorway throughout Germany. DAB is already available across Germany, and DAB programmes are also transmitted in Switzerland, Norway and Denmark. As well as music or talk shows, DAB also enables additional digital information to be received, known as DAB+. This offers the option, for example, of accessing much more advanced traffic updates, known as TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group). This enhances the navigation capabilities of the MMT Advanced. Professional navigation for trucks The centrally positioned MMT Advanced therefore offers not just the best sound and radio quality for entertainment, but is a specialised truck navigation unit which guides driver and truck securely and efficiently to their destination. The navigation map is stored on a Micro SD card. Music can continue to be played via the second card slot while the map is in use, or via the streaming function. As part of the truck-specific navigation, the map will be updated annually until 2025. Taking into account the dimensions of the truck, which can be defined by the driver (e.g. vehicle length with or without the trailer), the navigation unit suggests a suitable route and warns the driver of any height or weight restrictions. Route options can also be applied, meaning toll roads or residential areas can be avoided, for example. The traffic information and traffic jam avoidance functions are particularly advanced. If preferred, the MMT will use premium traffic information; in European countries, TMC and TPEG allow access to much more advanced traffic information, for example truck-specific news (such as roads being closed to trucks, or danger of crosswinds). TPEG transmits traffic information via the digital radio (DAB+). For this to work, digital radio must be available in the respective country. One particular advantage of digital radio is the volume of data that can be transmitted via the DAB+ radio signal, which has an additional channel specifically set up for traffic information. This channel provides a lot more information, with a greater level of accuracy. While the traditional TMC traffic signal only records the road network via a general grid system and can therefore only give approximate information about traffic jams, TPEG is much more precise and even allows the navigation unit to give information on the traffic flow. Installation of external cameras The MMT Advanced has two inputs for external cameras. These can be displayed manually or can be programmed to display automatically when using specific functions. For example, the images from the reversing camera can automatically be displayed on the monitor when the truck is in reverse, or the driver can manually switch to an available cargo hold camera.
  9. The eTruck: MAN presents a concept study of an electric semitrailer tractor at the IAA 2016 MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 MAN Truck & Bus is showcasing an electric TGS semitrailer tractor, alongside its electrically-powered city bus and various charging infrastructure concepts, as part of its eMobility theme at IAA 2016 The 18-tonne vehicle is designed for use with the City semitrailers for urban delivery applications The vehicle utilises expertise from the eMobility modular system which MAN Truck & Bus has developed for bus applications as part of its eMobility strategy Since 2009, MAN Truck & Bus has been working on new delivery and waste disposal vehicle concepts for urban environments. Cities and urban areas are increasingly facing the challenge of how to create a healthy climate for their inhabitants and their demands for quality of life, whilst reconciling this with ensuring the delivery of goods to city centres. The development of area-based and time-based traffic avoidance and modal shift concepts also comes into the equation, as do new approaches to space utilisation and new mobility concepts. Against this background, MAN Truck & Bus already presented the MAN Metropolis concept vehicle back in 2012. The all-electric 26-tonne refuse collector vehicle is CO2-free and, with its very low noise levels, is ideal for night-shift applications in city centres. A range extender in the chassis increases its deployable range to a maximum of 150 km/day. Since then, numerous practical trials with the vehicle have provided valuable experience for future projects. The Metropolis received particularly positive feedback from the trial participants for its simple operation and driveability. In practice, it proved to be a versatile vehicle suitable for many different applications. Fuel savings compared with a conventional diesel-powered vehicle were around 80 percent with the range extender. MAN Truck & Bus is presenting a further development of the Metropolis concept at the IAA 2016. This time, it’s an electrically-powered semitrailer tractor for applications in night-shift deliveries to city centre locations such as those normally utilised today by food supermarkets. Technically, it is based on a TGS 4X2 BLS-TS semitrailer tractor with an 18 t permissible total weight. The concept vehicle, which is optimised for operation with a City semitrailer with steerable single axle, fulfils the main demands being placed on future delivery vehicles for city centre applications, namely that they must have a high load volume and a low unladen weight, be emission-free (in terms of CO2, NOx and noise) when on the move and at the same time have good manoeuvrability. Driving this pioneering MAN City Truck concept vehicle is a 250 kW electric motor which delivers its 2700 Nm of torque to the rear axle via a propshaft. Auxiliary units, such as the power steering, air compressor and the air-conditioning system, are electrically operated and controlled via the energy management system as required to ensure energy savings. The braking energy recovery system converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy during acceleration phases, and utilises the energy for recharging the battery. A colour display in the cockpit informs the driver about the current energy parameters, such as battery charge level, energy recovery and charging mode. This therefore ensures that the vehicle is particularly energy efficient when in motion. The energy for the truck is provided by three 35.3 kWh high-performance lithium-ion batteries which are arranged under the driver’s cab above the front axle, where most standard vehicles have the diesel engine. The weight of the batteries is therefore over the front axle which enables the full load capacity of the rear axle to be used for the payload. The additional weight of the electric drive components is compensated for by dispensing with the conventional diesel engine, with the result that the vehicle has the same payload as a similar, conventional semitrailer tractor from the TGS model range. Depending on use, the battery capacity of the new concept vehicle permits a daily range of between 50 and 150 kilometres. The batteries are normally charged overnight. The system is also designed to be suitable for the so-called "opportunity charging" i.e. intermediate charging during vehicle operation. This rapid charging method during intermediate stops, e.g. when the driver takes a break, or while loading and unloading the vehicle, provides greater flexibility for operational and route planning. The concept vehicle also has the technical infrastructure for the installation of up to four additional batteries (each with a capacity of 35.3 kWh) on the side of the frame and/or a range extender or fuel cell, likewise mounted on the side of the frame. This degree of flexibility increases the vehicle’s range, satisfying customer requirements. The eTruck Study presented at the IAA will enable MAN to implement additional testing in the field of electrically powered trucks and gain valuable experience with real transport concepts. It represents just one aspect of the eMobility strategy from MAN Truck & Bus and offers a glimpse of the city centre transport solutions which are due to be part of MAN’s product range as of 2021. As part of its eMobility Roadmap, MAN is planning to unveil a pre-production bus version of a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to the public by 2018. Series production of a 100-percent electrically-powered city bus will commence before 2020. In the future, the engineering expertise of the eMobility modular system for buses will also be available for eTruck applications. Furthermore, as a member of the Volkswagen Group, MAN is also able to utilise group synergies and benefit from the dynamics of the passenger car sector. .
  10. The MAN TipMatic gearbox: Faster shifting strategy and customer-specific application optimisation at the IAA 2016 MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 MAN Truck & Bus introduces numerous driveline innovations in its new TipMatic generation at the IAA 2016, designed to reduce fuel consumption and increase driving comfort. MAN has optimised the automated TipMatic gearbox in their vehicles with individual moving-off and switching strategies for each specific area of application and added various new functions to enhance efficiency and comfort. The new functions of the gearbox operate uniformly and are available for all 12-speed gearbox versions in the new TG generation. They have been specifically adjusted for the combination with the new D20, D26 and D38 engines in the Euro 6 design and for the respective area of application. Purpose-built gearbox range The new gearbox functions can be broken down into various gearshift programmes, which can be selected upon ordering a vehicle and are included as an additional identifier in the gearbox name (such as MAN TipMatic FLEET). Each gearshift programme has its own, specific moving-off and switching strategy. Road vehicles require a balance of enhanced convenience and efficiency, while the emphasis for heavy-duty vehicles is on power, especially when moving off with a high tonnage. As for offroad vehicles, these require improved performance and speed, while emergency services vehicles have to be able to accelerate quickly. With all of these different requirements, the moving-off strategy defines how the truck responds to the accelerator from a standing position. The switching strategy, on the other hand, specifies the gear to be used in each situation. The following gearshift programmes are available to choose from: FLEET, PROFI, OFFROAD, EMERGENCY, COLLECT. FLEET As the name suggests, the FLEET gearshift programme is specifically designed for fleet vehicles used in long-haul transport. In normal driving mode, it only allows for automatic operation, manual gearshifts are only possible while moving off, when coasting, or as an emergency function. Especially the faster and highly consumptive downshifting via the kickdown function over the accelerator is inhibited. FLEET is specifically designed for fuel-efficient driving, where drivers rarely have to change manually, meaning fewer distractions and a safer driving experience. This gearshift programme is particularly ideal for large fleets with frequent driver changes or for hire fleets. PROFI In contrast, PROFI allows manual gear changes at any time, and the kickdown function for faster downshifting is always active by default. PROFI is primarily designed for comfort and to save fuel. When driving onto an incline, it increases the engine speed and thus makes large power reserves available at a very early stage, reducing the engine speed again at the end of the slope through timely upshifting into a higher gear. This makes it possible to achieve high average speeds without increasing fuel consumption. This gearbox range allows experienced drivers and those trained by MAN ProfiDrive to maximise the efficiency potential of their vehicle even better. OFFROAD When it comes to driving off the beaten track and in harsh conditions, the OFFROAD gearshift programme is the ideal choice. The gearbox shifts more quickly to higher gears at higher engine speeds, and manual changes are possible at any time. The kickdown function is designed in such a way that upshifts can be inhibited before inclines. OFFROAD makes the maximum power available on inclines through later switching and uses the engine brake line to its full potential on downward gradients. COLLECT MAN’s COLLECT gearshift programme offers enhanced gearbox software that has been specifically designed for refuse collectors. Geared towards the operating conditions of vehicles with rear or side loader superstructures, the switching strategy is optimised for longer stop intervals with activation of the power take-offs and frequent moving off. This helps to improve the typical workflows of refuse collectors, which involve a substantial amount of starting and stopping, as well as a high number of gear changes between the collection points at peak times of the day. EMERGENCY The EMERGENCY gearshift programme is specifically designed for emergency services vehicles (such as fire engines, ambulances, or disaster control vehicles). In this programme, the gearbox shifts more quickly and at higher engine speeds. It also has a special downshift logic, which helps to find the right gear faster when accelerating. When heading to an emergency, specialist personnel can therefore count on the vehicle’s maximum acceleration capacity in any situation. Whilst the FLEET and PROFI gearshift programmes can be considered standard gearbox ranges for normal driving situations, OFFROAD, EMERGENCY and COLLECT are additional programmes that are available alongside the conventional range. Drivers can use the gearbox selection switch to select the appropriate mode as required. Manoeuvring feature Every gearbox range is complemented by additional manoeuvring features, which can also be called up via the gearbox selection switch. These are specifically designed for low speeds in both normal and reverse mode. The accelerator is characterised by its exceptional sensitivity, which limits the engine speed and restricts the available gears to just the first two. In manoeuvring mode, these can only be selected manually using the stalk switch. SmartShifting for even faster gear changes The switching dynamics of the new MAN TipMatic are designed in such a way that gear changes can be made as fast as possible. The new SmartShifting function combines a rapid switching process in all gears to suit every driving situation. Taking the accelerator pedal position, vehicle mass and the calculated driving resistance into consideration, the gearbox software determines the optimum switching speed for every situation. The strategy behind the SmartShifting function is always based on striking the ideal balance between convenience, efficiency and speed. In the new MAN TipMatic versions, the upshift support (HSU), which allows for gear skips of up to three levels at a time, is additionally supported by the electronically controlled EVBec engine brake. Especially in the case of large gear skips, the EVBec closes the exhaust throttle valve to create a rapid drop in engine speed in the phase where the clutch is open. In particular steep inclines can be tackled in a higher gear thanks to the upshift support. EfficientCruise + EfficientRoll With its new generation of gearboxes, MAN is further enhancing the potential to save more fuel. The new version of the GPS-supported MAN EfficientCruise with its anticipatory cruise control is now available in combination with the EfficientRoll gearbox function. This switches the gearbox into neutral on a gentle downward gradient to use the momentum of the vehicle without any drag losses. EfficientCruise considers the topography of the road ahead so that it can adapt the vehicle’s operation and speed for a more efficient experience. What’s more, it also inhibits unnecessary downshifts in the MAN TipMatic gearbox. In comparison to benchmark vehicles with standard cruise control, the new version of MAN EfficientCruise with EfficientRoll saves up to nine per cent more fuel. “Coasting along” in idle mode with Idle Speed Driving The Idle Speed Driving function allows the truck to “coast along” through slow-moving traffic without touching the accelerator when the clutch is engaged. This function is available in the first six gears. While manual upshifting is possible, downshifting is performed automatically when the idling torque is insufficient for a higher gear or when the driver brakes. This allows the driver to let the truck coast along gently through the flowing traffic and increases the protection of the clutch. Convenient free-rocking function An added plus for safety and convenience comes in the form of the new free-rocking function in the MAN TipMatic gearbox. It facilitates easier moving off for trucks on snow or other slippery, unstable surfaces. If the toggle switch is activated in the switching strip, the driver can rock the vehicle free from a given situation by pressing and releasing the accelerator alternately. This function opens and closes the clutch according to the actuation of the accelerator so quickly that the vehicle rocks free. As part of this process, TipMatic automatically selects the appropriate gear to reduce the drive wheel torque and prevent wheel spins. Basic MAN TipMatic gearbox versions The new MAN TipMatic range is based on two basic gearboxes. The MAN TipMatic with 12 gears and two additional crawler speeds is available exclusively in the TGS and TGX series for 4x2 standard semitrailer tractors with the new D26 engine. The additional crawler gear speeds one and two are characterised by their smaller speed jumps when changing gear. This more sensitive gradation makes it possible to perform precise manoeuvres in even the tightest of spaces. The 12+2 gearbox has been specifically optimised for conventional long-haul transport and offers the ideal combination of exceptional driving comfort and fuel efficiency. It is available in both direct drive (DD) and overdrive (OD) versions, and covers a torque range of between 2700 (DD) and 3000 (OD) Nm. A retarder with maximum braking torque of 3500 Nm can optionally be fitted. Alternatively, a retarder with a maximum braking torque of 4100 Nm is also available, which comes complete with a decoupling function. This makes it possible to separate the retarder mechanically from the flux when there are no braking requirements, thereby preventing friction losses caused by the retarder running unnecessarily. The second basic MAN TipMatic gearbox with 12 gears and up to four reversing gears is suitable for use in all applications with the new MAN D38 and D20 engines. This includes all chassis, tipping semitrailer tractors, tank/silo semitrailer tractors, and special applications such as heavy-duty vehicles. With regard to the D26 engine, this also counts for all applications, except for the 4x2 standard semitrailor tractors. It is available in both direct drive (DD) and overdrive (OD) versions, and covers a torque range between 2900 (DD) and 3000 (OD) Nm. The retarder range comes in a standard version with a braking torque of 3500 Nm and a heavy-duty alternative of 4000 Nm. For heavy-duty requirements in particular, the range of applications covers up to 120 tonnes of permitted gross combination weight – without a converter clutch. A specific “heavy-duty” gearbox control is available for this type of application. The gearbox is characterised by its high levels of efficiency and extensive torque reserves. It contributes to low fuel consumption and offers a high level of switching and driving comfort in all applications. Both gearbox versions have a tilt sensor, which provides the gearbox software with the necessary parameters to be able to select the appropriate gear regardless of the topography – particularly when moving off – for a comfortable experience that minimises strain on the drivetrain.
  11. New MAN engines for trucks in model year 2017 MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 The new engine range in the Euro 6 classification for model year 2017 includes 14 output levels between 150 and 640 hp. MAN Truck & Bus produces 4 engine series for use in its trucks at its engine plant. The common rail injection system is common to all MAN engines. The D08 series covers the range from 150 to 340 hp. The 08 figure in the type description indicates a bore of 108 mm. The stroke is 125 mm. Each of the three performance levels are covered by the in-line 4-cylinder and the in-line 6-cylinder engine. These engines are intended exclusively for the TGL and TGM series in the truck range. In the D20 engine series, the ‘D20’ refers to a bore of 120 mm. The stroke is 155 mm. Both the 320 hp and 360 hp variants are used in the TGS and TGX series. For the model year 2016, the D26 engines series received new power ratings of 420 hp, 460 hp and 500 hp. The bore is 126 mm and the stroke is 166 mm. These engines, amongst others, are available in the TGS and TGX series. The D38 6-cylinder in-line engines are reserved exclusively for the MAN TGX series. They cover the output class above 500 hp and, at 640 hp, are the most powerful engines offered by MAN for trucks. The figures for the stroke and bore are 170 and 138 mm respectively. 12. MAN engines: Even greater power and efficiency at the IAA 2016 MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 MAN Truck & Bus is going to great lengths to enhance its range of engines in the lead-up to the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016. These are set to ensure significantly better fuel consumption, increased efficiency and enhanced driving dynamics without compromising on reliability. With the requirements of the Euro 6 emission standard about to change in 2017, MAN has taken the opportunity to overhaul its range of engines. The new engines offer more torque and greater performance with lower consumption. Furthermore, MAN has introduced a new, more reactive catalyst material for the SCR system in the new D38, D26 and D20 engines. Combustion and exhaust gas aftertreatment are thus optimised to such an extent that consumption decreases even further and emissions stay low. For the first time, the new D08, D20, D26 and D38 engines in all performance classes can also be operated with paraffinic fuels according to EN 15940, such as hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO). The new MAN D38: Up to 640 HP for standard series engines The 640 HP performance class in the new MAN D38 engine was previously reserved exclusively for heavy-duty designs, but with the new generation of engines, it is now available in almost all versions of the MAN TGX D38. MAN is also offering the new D38 with additional performance levels of 540 and 580 HP – an increase of respectively 20 HP compared to before. Offering high torque at low speeds, the 15.2-litre, in-line six engine really does stand out from the crowd. Even at as low as 900 rpm, it can reach torques between 2700 and 3000 Nm, depending on the engine power. This makes it ideal to facilitate reduced fuel consumption and thus lower CO2 emissions. Two-stage exhaust turbocharging A key element of low-speed engine characteristics is the charging system which comprises two differently sized turbochargers connected in sequence. The smaller high-pressure charger responds even at low engine speeds, with the larger low-pressure charger providing additional support with increasing speeds and loads. When the engine is subject to high power requirements, the low-pressure charger takes over the majority of the compressor activity. This concept leads to an ideal supply of combustion air to the engine and thus an optimal torque curve which means that the maximum torque is available within a wide range of between 900 and 1400 rpm. A range of this size supports low-speed, economical driving on even terrain and less gear shifts on inclines. Greater combustion and injection pressures For the new D38 engine, MAN uses a third generation common rail system which injects fuel into the cylinders at up to 2500 bar. This leads to a finer dispersion of the fuel whilst enabling even more accurate pre-injection, main-injection and post-injection processes, making combustion particularly effective and reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions even further. At the same time, the new generation of the common rail system facilitates maximum torque even at low speeds. With its low auxiliary power requirements, the optimised fuel pump further contributes to overall fuel efficiency. A further reduction in consumption is achieved by the air compressor, which can be switched off and also facilitates a quick filling of the air supply with its two cylinders. The Air Pressure Management system only switches on the compressor when compressed air is required, which stops it from running unnecessarily and therefore prevents additional fuel consumption. Sensor-controlled fan speed The new air management system keeps the operating temperature constant, ensures that it is reached more quickly, increases the usable drive power, and reduces fan noise. Optimised oil cooling The improved overall cooling efficiency is supported by an optimised oil cooling process. A new thermostat controls the engine oil temperature so that the optimal temperature is reached more quickly, and the engine can thus operate faster with the lowest possible friction. In drive mode – for example, on the motorway – the temperature control maintains the oil temperature at a slightly higher level to keep the internal engine friction to a minimum. A further reduction in friction is also supported by the steel pistons. The high strength of the steel alloy makes it possible to reduce the compression height, meaning longer connecting rods can be used to reduce not only the lateral piston force, but also the frictional force of the pistons in the cylinder liner. This serves to increase the service life of the components and simultaneously leads to a reduction in fuel consumption. In addition, the new D38 engine is also equipped with fire rings, which are installed at the top end of the cylinder liners. These minimise the accumulation of oil carbon on the piston crevice and thereby not only reduce wear but also further increase the service life of the engine. Due to its specifically developed plastic oil sump, the new MAN D38 engine is also one of the lightest units in its class. The new MAN D26: Greater torque and performance with reduced consumption In comparison to its predecessor, the new MAN D26 engine boasts even more torque and performance. It now comes complete with an extra 20 HP in each class as well as a greater torque of 200 Nm, which means that the D26 engine is available in new performance classes of 420, 460 or 500 HP. MAN now offers the TGS and TGX series with the new D26 engine to meet customer requirements for the 500 HP class. With its performance range of up to 500 HP, not to mention its high torque, increased fuel efficiency, durability, and low weight, the new MAN D26 engine is one of the most effective drive units in its class. Like the new MAN D38 engine, the new D26 offers a whole host of different technologies for reducing consumption. It is also fitted with new, low-friction steel pistons and fire rings, optimised oil cooling with thermostat, and sensor-controlled fan speed. In addition, MAN has also reworked the turbo charger for the new D26, which now responds even faster due to its optimized efficiency in both the high- and low-pressure phases, particularly during mid-range acceleration at moderate speeds. Driving dynamics are vastly improved with the new D26, offering an enhanced torque curve and greater flexibility. Optimised exhaust gas recirculation The new D26 benefits from optimised exhaust gas recirculation, which results in a better admixture of the recirculated exhaust gases across all cylinders, along with improved charge cycles and enhanced combustion processes. These measures considerably reduce the level of nitrogen oxide found in the exhaust gas. Regulated coolant pump Yet another innovation of the new MAN D26 is a regulated coolant pump. Unlike the previous unregulated and constantly rotating coolant pumps, the fully engine speed-regulated design allows for coolant to be circulated as and when required. The pump performance is regulated continuously between 20 and 95 percent by means of a Visco clutch. This means that when demand for coolant is low – for example in long-haul transport – 80 per cent of the mechanical power required by the coolant pump can be reduced, resulting in significant fuel savings potential. At the same time, the engine also reaches operating temperature more quickly in the warm-up phase, which in turn reduces overall wear. Electronically controlled EVBec exhaust valve brake as series standard The new generation of the MAN D26 engine is supplied with the EVBec electronically controlled exhaust valve brake with a brake output of 325 kW (at 2400 rpm) as series standard. Its efficiency and direct incorporation into the brake management system support efficient and fuel-saving operation with a simultaneous reduction in wear on the wheel brakes and drivetrain components. It even makes a significant contribution to driving safety. This enhanced EVBec can be regulated continuously when activated via the brake management system in applications such as additional braking via the MAN BrakeMatic, the standard cruise control function, MAN’s EfficientCruise GPS cruise control, or the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control. If the driver manually activates the sustained-action braking function via the stalk switch, the braking torque can be controlled in stages. The brake management system then automatically controls the exhaust valve brake in five phases. If the vehicle also has a retarder, this is controlled in combination with the exhaust valve brake in six phases. The new MAN D20 and MAN D08: Tried-and-tested technology with even greater reductions in fuel consumption In the process of redesigning the truck engine portfolio, MAN has now also kitted out both its D08 and D20 engine series with a wide range of new features. The new D20 also benefits from most of the innovative equipment found in the new D26 engine, including optimised oil cooling with thermostat, sensor-controlled fan speed, a regulated coolant pump, and improved exhaust gas recirculation. This also applies for the series standard fitting of the electronically regulated EVBec engine brake. It is features like these that make the new MAN D20 more fuel-efficient as well as being exceptionally reliable. With the new D08, MAN is building on a proven concept, which includes an overhaul of the engine software. A new coolant level sensor prevents the engine from running with too little coolant, allowing any engine damage to be prevented in good time. Further innovations include the sensor-controlled fan speed and a new oil level sensor. Performance classes 250, 290 and 340 HP for the 6-cylinder model as well as classes 150, 180 and 220 HP for the 4-cylinder model remain unchanged. The 6-cylinder design with 340 HP boasts an optimised intercooler system, which reduces the thermal load of the cooling components as well as keeping wear to a minimum.
  13. New MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 is launched MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 MAN showcases the third edition of the MAN EfficientLine at the IAA 2016 trade fair. Its economic fuel-saving potential has already been proven in a comparative test drive with its predecessor. TÜV SÜD certifies that the MAN TGX EfficientLine3 delivers a further 6.35% fuel saving against the MAN TGX EfficientLine 2. A look back to 2011: MAN show their commitment to increasing transport efficiency with the slogan “Consistently efficient”. MAN’s launch of the EfficientLine semi-trailer tractor took the sector by surprise. A controversial debate broke out among customers regarding some of the methods used to reduce fuel consumption. Passions ran high as the speed was restricted to 85km/h instead of 89km/h and attachments such as sunblinds and truck horns, which interfered with the aerodynamics, were omitted. MAN were proved right due to their success. Over 56,000 semi-trailer tractors with EfficientLine equipment have so far rolled off MAN's assembly lines. A series of changes all played their part in contributing to this success. These included spoilers and side panels for optimising aerodynamics, lightweight construction in the form of aluminium parts for the compressed-air tank, rims and diesel tank, retarder installed as standard, air compressor controlled to meet requirements (APM, Air Pressure Management) and optional TPM tyre pressure monitoring for maintaining optimal tyre pressure. MAN launched packages with elements of the EfficientLine design to optimise other basic vehicles such as semi-trailer tractors in the MAN TGS series or chassis such as on the swap body truck. Other European truck manufacturers responded by launching comparable models. IAA 2016 will see the launch of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine. To clearly demonstrate the fuel-saving potential, MAN performed a consumption tour with an MAN TGX 18.500 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 3 semi-trailer tractor in July. The basis for comparison was provided by the truck's predecessor model - an MAN TGX 18.480 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 2 - which travelled with it along the same route. The TÜV SÜD monitored how the measured values were determined. The consumption tour stretched almost 4,000 kilometres through six European countries: Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland. The starting point and final destination was Munich. The efficiency of the EfficientCruise - the latest generation anticipational cruise control - was demonstrated in particular on the topographically challenging sections of the route. The EfficientRoll freewheeling gearbox function came into effect on gentle inclines or slightly undulating route sections. The reworking of the new D26 CommonRail engine and the driveline redesigned for this with TipMatic gearbox 12+2 27 DD Profi and axle transmission ratio of i = 2.53 also played their part in reducing fuel consumption. On the basis of their trials over the course of the continued development of the driveline, the technicians at MAN had anticipated a fuel saving of at least five percent on this rout. But even this positive estimation turned out to be too conservative on the consumption tour. According to the in-depth analysis of the measurement report provided by TÜV SÜD, the actual difference in fuel consumption between the EfficientLine 3 and EfficientLine 2 was 6.35%. In order to illustrate this encouraging increase in efficiency in Europe and to promote the MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 in an eye-catching fashion at the IAA, these two vehicles took part in a promotional tour over the same route as the consumption tour as part of the MAN pre-IAA press conference on 20 July 2016 in Munich. This tour also spanned almost 4,000 kilometres through six European countries. The convoy was scheduled to make eight stops on route in Bregenz-Hohenems (Austria), Milan (Italy), La Junquera and Irun (Spain), La Corrèze (France), Bulle and Birr (Switzerland) and finally in Munich in order to allow customers and truck drivers in these locations to see the new MAN TGX for the first time. Alongside the tour, there were various different activities taking place in the countries such as competitions, the awarding of prizes and expert lectures. The primary focus of this was to post active updates about the tour to the various social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Daily video summaries and animated infographics outlining the features of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine3 kept enthusiasts up to date at all times throughout the tour. The virtual coverage of the tour was rounded off with an emotional look behind the scenes under the slogan “Faces of Europe” and creative collages depicting each country. On the whole, the interest over the course of the tour was very high. With 10,362 likes and 1,641 shares, Facebook was the most successful channel, reaching a total of 5 million people and consequently gaining 2,164 new likes for the MAN Truck & Bus Facebook page. On Twitter, up to 52,000 followers were reached and the account clocked up 37 retweets. On the whole, thanks to the broad, targeted organisation of the promotional tour and various contributions to social media, awareness of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 has increased significantly. .

  15. MAN at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016: a wealth of product innovations for the truck series MAN Truck & Bus Press Release / September 21, 2016 In addition to a number of world premieres, MAN Truck & Bus is also showcasing other vehicles and new technologies at the IAA. A new light hypoid tandem axle increases carrying capacity and reduces consumption. MAN Hydrodrive, a selectable hydrostatic drive in the front axle, boosts traction when needed and is now also available in combination with the MAN TipMatic automatic gearbox. With its new TGS-TS, a lightweight vehicle that can simultaneously handle maximum payloads, MAN is bringing targeted optimisation to the industry. With a systematic orientation towards optimising transport within the industry, MAN Truck & Bus develops vehicles and technologies with a focus on delivering the highest possible cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Developments that reduce the unladen weight of the vehicle make it possible to increase the payload and therefore also the transport volume. Systems that can be switched on as and when required allow for a flexible use of the trucks even in unusual situations without having to make any compromise on efficiency and payload advantage in normal operation. A plus for the payload: new light hypoid tandem axle At the bauma 2016 earlier this year, MAN presented its new light hypoid tandem axle unit, which is particularly suited to transport operations where the payload is critical. The unit is being presented at the trade fair in the weight-optimised version of the four-axle truck mixer MAN TGS 32.400 8x4 BB, which weighs in at approximately 280 kilogrammes less compared to corresponding planetary axles. The weight advantage achieved over today’s conventional hypoid axles with a 13-tonne load capacity is 180 kilogrammes. In terms of truck mixers, this means, for example, that it is possible to transport 180 kilogrammes more concrete or water. The requirement for the use of thermo-insulated bodies when transporting asphalt adds additional weight. The operator is now able to compensate for this payload loss with a lighter axle unit. With a technical gross train weight of 60 tonnes, there are also applications outside the construction sector in distribution and long-haul transport. Besides its benefits in terms of improved payload, this tandem axle unit also offers other advantages. The fuel consumption is slightly lower than in vehicles fitted with planetary axles. In a direct comparison, the new hypoid axle construction – designed for a payload of 11.5 tonnes – also offers additional ground clearance of approximately four centimetres. This means MAN now achieves the ground clearance required for N3G approval (off-road vehicle) with 315/80 R 22.5 tyres fitted. The new axle unit is available for normal-height vehicles up to 480 HP with the leaf-leaf and leaf-air suspension versions of the TGX 6x4, TGS 6x4 and 8x4, but also for the TGM with 6x4 drive configuration. Additionally, the TGX 6x4 and TGS 6x4 and 8x4 also benefit from this equipment alternative in the medium height version with leaf-leaf suspension. The new tandem axle provides a transmission ratio of i = 2.85 to ensure an efficient drive train configuration. The longest ratio offered to date was i = 3.08. A broader range of applications: MAN HydroDrive combined with TipMatic With the presentation of the MAN HydroDrive in 2005, MAN introduced a new drive technology variant for trucks to the market. The technical solution of a hydrostatically driven front axle to increase traction when required and to deliver a strong braking effect on steep off-road slopes was received in many sectors with great interest. MAN is offering this system in the widest range of configurations available on the market. It can be provided for two-, three- and four-axle vehicles in the TGS series and for two- and three-axle semitrailer tractors in the TGX series and is ideal for vehicles that are primarily driven on surfaced roads and only occasionally need additional traction. Typical areas of application are unsurfaced roads and construction sites, farm and forest tracks and unclean roads, or roads covered in ice and snow. The benefit of the hydrostatic front-axle drive really becomes evident if an off-road slope has to be negotiated without a load. A typical example of this is the tipping semitrailer tractor which has unloaded at the bottom of a pit. The rear axle, now under very little load, lacks traction on the incline. The innovation of the HydroDrive combined with the MAN TipMatic automatic gearbox is now available to order at the IAA. Both the “on-road” and “off-road” gear shifting programmes are available. Milk collection vehicles are one example of the on-road application of the gear shifting software, while tipping semitrailer tractors and timber transporters are typical off-road applications. There are no restrictions on use of the engine and gearbox-dependent power take-offs. MAN has continued to develop this system and improved its practical operation for users. MAN optimised the routing of the hydraulic lines with the introduction of the Euro 6 design. The clearance around the wheels has been increased to allow for larger rims and tyre widths – even with tyre chains attached. The driver can activate the MAN HydroDrive using a rotary switch even under load and whilst driving. The system switches off automatically above a speed of 28 km/h. The system re-engages without driver intervention if the speed drops below 23 km/h. The payload advantage compared to a conventional all-wheel drive is one of the recognised benefits of MAN HydroDrive. The weight advantage is 500 to 750 kilogrammes depending on the vehicle configuration. From a business perspective, the fuel saving represents a further benefit – when the system is switched off, the front wheels rotate freely, as with an on-road vehicle. MAN also offers this additional traction for vehicles with a normal height design. The low frame height makes it easier for drivers to enter and exit the cab. The body's lower centre of gravity has a positive effect on driving stability. All MAN TipMatic and MAN HydroDrive components are located below the top edge of the frame. MAN vehicles are thus distinguished by the unlimited options available in terms of bodies. On descents, the HydroDrive transfers the engine braking effect to the front axle. This provides safety and lateral traction on slippery ground, resulting in overall improved vehicle control. The payload heavyweight: the new TGS-TS for tank and silo haulage The consistent industry-specific focus of the new MAN TGS series supports economic tank and silo haulage operations. In industries where goods are billed according to the transported volume, the payload is of high importance. For this reason, MAN’s focus for the TS version of the TGS range has always been on creating a lightweight vehicle that can simultaneously handle maximum payloads. MAN has optimised the unladen weight of the new MAN TGS-TS, making this vehicle the lightest customer-oriented semitrailer tractor for tank and silo operations in the MAN product portfolio. If all the measures are implemented, the unladen weight of the TGS-TS is no more than around 6560 kilogrammes. This permits an increase in the payload of more than 100 kilogrammes. The measures that have been implemented include the reduction of the series standard 35 litre AdBlue tank to a capacity of 20 litres. Fastening the side panel in combination with the fender bracket saves both parts and weight. The changeover of the battery box to a version with two 155 Ah batteries instead of two 175 Ah batteries can provide a potential saving of 45 kilogrammes. The TGS-TS now also features a new, lighter steering gear as standard. In combination with the new weight-optimised front axle and propshaft, these measures reduce the overall weight by up to 24 kilogrammes. Irrespective of this, the MAN TGS-TS still benefits from the same design upgrade in the interior and on the vehicle front as every new MAN TGS. The aerodynamically optimised radiator fins improve air circulation. The bed behind the seats can be separated from the driver's workplace with curtains in sand beige. The MAN TipMatic 12 26 DD Profi driveline includes new transmission-side features such as the combination of EfficientRoll with EfficientCruise, smart shifting, shift-support, rocking-free mode and idle speed driving. This means that the new MAN TGS-TS is not only optimised in terms of its payload but also benefits from improved efficiency. .

  18. Iveco Trucks / September 21, 2016 IVECO Z TRUCK: the Zero-impact concept truck that anticipates the shift to green energy and autonomous driving in long-distance haulage Iveco presents its world premiere IVECO Z TRUCK, the long-haul concept truck that breaks away from every constraint to be a zero-impact vehicle for a totally sustainable transport system. IVECO Z TRUCK delivers: Zero CO2 emissions through optimized Liquefied Natural Gas technology and the use of Bio-methane. The concept is based on a heavy truck running on Bio-LNG with conformable tanks, enhanced aerodynamics and a waste heat recovery system, to deliver long-haul transport with autonomy of 2,200 km and virtually zero CO2 emissions. Zero accidents through the advanced use of automated driving technologies. It defines how new technologies and autonomous driving will change the role of the driver, who will become an on-board logistics operator. Zero stress and Zero waste of time with the driver-centred design: the cab is freed from traditional constraints to be reconfigured according to the different uses (driving, automated driving, office work, resting) and the HMI (Human Machine Interface) to adapt the way it provides information as needed – the right information, at the right time, in the right place. IVECO Z TRUCK takes a step into the future anticipating the way alternative energy, new technologies and automated driving will change the driver’s life. Its pioneering approach has resulted this concept being protected by 29 patents. Pierre Lahutte, Iveco Brand President comments: “We are facing a revolution triggered by the concern for the environment, the economy, and safety on and around vehicles. With our focus on our values of sustainability, TCO, technology and business partnership with our customers, at Iveco we have been working to constantly reduce the impact of our vehicles with alternative fuels such as bio-LNG, and putting the driver and the customer at the centre of our technological and design development. With IVECO Z TRUCK and its 29 patents, we are defining where our efforts could lead us in the future: a vehicle with a human dimension, designed to accommodate comfortably and safely the work and leisure activities of the driver, adapting each time to his needs. We are defining a future of long-haul freight transport that is totally sustainable – a vehicle that has zero impact on its environment, with zero emissions and zero accidents.” In 2014, Iveco unveiled at the IAA its Iveco Vision, a Van concept, which conceived the vehicle as a business platform designed to facilitate every aspect of the driver’s workday. Many of the ideas introduced in the Vision concept have since become reality in the New Daily. Today, IVECO Z TRUCK takes the next step into the future and anticipates the way new technologies and automated driving could change the role of the drivers, their activities and their workday in the long distance haulage business. Next generation LNG Truck uses up to 33% less fuel and dramatically cuts CO2 emissions IVECO Z TRUCK features a new generation LNG engine running on Bio-methane, which is derived from refined biogas. This fuel, which plays a key role in CNH Industrial’s quest to develop sustainable transport modes on its path to Zero emissions, ensures low CO2 and ultra low PM emission. This LNG-fuelled engine develops 460 hp and 2,000 Nm torque, and features a 16-gear automated transmission with Powershift in the upper gears. Iveco’s commitment to innovation and constant evolution in the area of the LNG technology is also embraced by PETRONAS Lubricants International, which supported the development of IVECO Z TRUCK. In fact, LNG used in conjunction with PETRONAS Urania low viscosity engine oils, contributes to reaching the Zero emissions target, further improving fuel efficiency. IVECO Z TRUCK features MICHELIN X® LINE™ ENERGY™, the first range to be awarded the AAA grading in rolling resistance, which saves long-haul convoys up to one litre of fuel per 100 km. The tyres feature RFID embedded tags, which can track each tyre throughout its life cycle, providing information such as type, size, model name, wear, performance or temperature. Used with Tyre Pressure Monitoring System sensors on the rims, they can also provide pressure data. IVECO Z TRUCK adopts a new concept tank developed with SAG. It is made of aluminium insulated with a new system called MLI (Multi Layer Insulation), a reflective foil that protects from heat radiation. It features a technology that allows for a squared shape, which makes it possible to optimise the use of space and accommodate two tanks with a single recharge. The two tanks have a total capacity of 1200 litres, resulting in autonomy of 2,200 km – 60% more than the current Stralis NP, and even more than a diesel vehicle. An on-board Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery system exploits exhaust gas as a heat source to recover energy, with the result of a further fuel economy gain while driving. IVECO Z TRUCK’s approach to achieving the Zero accidents goal is based on active and preventive safety systems as the most effective approach for road safety. A full set of sensors around the vehicle enables the evolution towards automated driving, making the technological advance in full safety. From functional enhancement to the creation of a unique design for a living/working space IVECO Z TRUCK, designed by CNH Industrial Design Centre, makes a statement on how the future could be for truck drivers. It is shaped by its enhanced aerodynamics, by the improved safety and by the aim of creating a new living cab space. It imagines how automated driving will change the role of the driver, who will spend less time driving and more time doing office work. The concept enables the driver to reconfigure the cab layout according to the use he/she wishes to make of the truck at the time: driving in an urban context, highway or autonomous driving on motorways, taking care of office work, relaxing or sleeping overnight. When the vehicle is parked, the driver can reconfigure the interior of the cab to fully exploit the living and sharing aspect. The sliding wall at the rear slides back automatically, adding 500 mm interior length and increasing the living space. This makes it possible to use all the features and amenities the driver may need, such as a foldable bed, shower, kitchen, fridge, sink and entertainment wall. The HMI is designed to ensure the driver has full, all-round visibility and to provide adaptive information: this means exactly the right information, in the right place, at the right time. The information on the truck’s functions is projected on the smart windshield as it becomes necessary and changes according to what the driver needs at the time. This includes active connectivity with Michelin’s tyres, which provides real time data on tyre pressure, temperature and usage – information that can significantly improve the driver’s safety. The seat, steering wheel system, pedals and controls console form a self-contained unit that is suspended independently from the cab for the smoothest ride. The air conditioning system provides ideal conditions around the driver’s seat, creating a Climatic Bubble that encloses the driving platform, so that the driver enjoys ideal temperature conditions with no disturbance from air flows. IVECO Z TRUCK breaks away from current constraints with completely new thinking and ideas on energy efficiency and waste heat recovery, on ergonomics, on the way the vehicle and driver interact and communicate – new ideas that are protected by 29 patents. 21. Volvo Group Displays Zero-Emission Capable Drayage Truck at 2016 SEJ Conference Volvo Group Press Release / September 22, 2016 Volvo Group North America will display its Integrated Technology Truck – a zero-emission capable Mack Pinnacle model designed for port drayage applications – at the 26th annual Society of Environmental Journalists conference in Sacramento, California Sept. 21-25. Featuring an innovative diesel-electric hybrid system, the truck utilizes geo-fencing technology to switch between diesel and zero-emission operation. The drayage truck, which was first displayed at the Advanced Clean Technology (ACT) Expo 2016, was built as part of a South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD)-sponsored project and is capable of zero-emission operation thanks to the integration of a Mack MP7 [Volvo D11] diesel engine with a parallel hybrid system and lithium-ion battery pack. Other lightweight and aerodynamic-enhancing components were added to maximize the benefits of the hybrid technology and extend the truck’s zero-emission range. “Congestion and the associated pollution at freight-intensive locations is a growing concern,” said Susan Alt, Volvo Group senior vice president of public affairs. “By taking a complete vehicle approach, we were able to design a package of technologies to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions for a drayage application. We’re proud of our collaboration with SCAQMD to design and develop a unique solution to help them achieve their transportation and air quality objectives.” The truck relies on geo-fencing capabilities similar to those enabled by Mack’s “GuardDog” Connect telematics platform to switch between zero-emission and diesel-hybrid operating modes. Geo-fencing establishes a virtual “fence,” or boundary, as determined by GPS coordinates. The onboard hardware can then identify each time the truck passes through the boundary. When inside the zero-emission geo-fence – which includes locations with the heaviest freight traffic, such as a port – the truck operates in a zero-emission, pure electric mode. When outside the zero-emission geo-fence – such as on the way to a rail yard or distribution center – the clean diesel engine is activated, enabling hybrid operation and recharging of the batteries. The Mack drayage truck, with its suite of integrated technologies, is currently participating in a project with a second truck funded by the California Energy Commission to expand the zero emission and geo-fencing capabilities in a drayage fleet at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. Volvo Group also announced that it will be part of a SCAQMD-sponsored Zero Emission Drayage Truck Demonstration Project funded by the California Air Resources Board. That project will integrate additional technologies to the trucks, including a cooperative intelligent transportation system to help reduce air pollution at California ports.
