When did they stop teaching people how to drive?
RowdyRebel replied to vision386's topic in Odds and Ends
That's why I prefer to operate under 395.1(e)(1)...I go from line 1 to line 4 at the start of my day, and from line 4 up to line 1 when I get home again. The company would prefer a RODS (sent out a memo about 2 months ago stating "short haul" logs were no longer acceptable, but that is due to their installation of Peoplenet in their company trucks and Peoplenet refusing to develop a short-haul version of their software (since short-haul drivers don't have to take that stupid 30 minute break). I figure if they say anything, I'll ask them if they would prefer a RODS in violation of 395.8(f)(2) or a record of hours worked 100% in compliance with 395.1(e)(1). When you run 3, 4, (or as many as 15) loads in an 8 to 9 hour day...plus the pretrip, posttrip, and fuel...I don't care HOW neat your handwriting is, at the end of the day the log book just isn't going to be LEGIBLE when you've been changing your duty status every 15-30 minutes throughout the course of the day. Spend more time coloring in that silly book than you do hauling the freight... -
Term limits don't mean crap...they still get their pension no matter HOW they leave office. Screw that...the day they leave office, all pay & benefits should cease. Hell, most of 'em "retire" into 6-figure lobbying jobs while STILL collecting their taxpayer-funded pension. Rather than term limits, congressional pay packages ought to be reformed. I'd be in favor of 1/365 of the average wage earned by the residents of their district for every full day they work...as in they have to actually attend their committee meetings, be present on the floor to vote/debate, or if nothing else is going on be in their office where constituents would have access to them. Don't show up? Docked the day's pay. No more automatic pay raises...no "cost of living" adjustments...no more voting themselves a bigger paycheck. Want a raise? Push for policies which would encourage good paying jobs to move to your district, thereby increasing the average income in your district. When that goes up, so will your pay. And treat them as independent contractors...if they want health insurance, they can pay for it with a portion of their wages just like any other private citizen...maybe then they'd be less inclined to SCREW IT UP! And no "special" treatment under the law, either...no "waivers". Whatever laws they passed are binding upon those who wrote the law, and punishment and/or fines for violating the law should be at least DOUBLE the statutory fine or sentence when a lawmaker breaks the law. Lawmakers income should also be taxed at twice the statutory rate for the general population to encourage them to keep tax rates reasonable. Repeal the 17th Amendment. The people have their representation in the House. The Senate was the individual sovereign States' voice in the federal government. With the 17th Amendment, the States lost THEIR representation. Those changes would do more than term limits. Hell, I've got a 1st term representative right now because the long-term incumbent retired when he realized how unpopular his vote for Obamacare really was. Rather than take a chance at being fired, he retired. Either way, though, he'd still be getting paid.

I don't speed through work or school zones. The closer somebody is to my back bumper, the slower I go. I want to be sure if something happens that I can stop without being rear-ended...too much paperwork. So, if you want to get through the work or school zone at the posted limit, don't tailgate me. If you want to speed through the work or school zone, don't be behind me. -
Obama has nothing to worry about as long as he's got VP Biden ready to finish out his term. NOBODY wants to see THAT idiot as POTUS. It's his insurance policy. Heck, for his first 2 years he had the added insurance of Pelosi as the next-in-line behind Biden. Now it's Boehner...which is almost as bad. Bottom line, nobody on EITHER side wants to see anything bad happen to this president because those who are in line to fill his shoes are bumbling idiots who wouldn't be any better. Besides, talking about harm coming to political leaders is a great way to have the SS knocking on your door "investigating" the threat. Dumb to talk like that, especially in a public forum. Hard to stock up for the zombie apocalypse when the SS has you flagged in the NICS system.

Haha! Model T...where ya got 3 pedals and NONE of 'em are the throttle! I doubt many "kids" my age would have a clue how to drive one. My grandpa had 2...a '26 coupe and a '26 sedan. Dad inherited the sedan...his sister got the coupe. I'd love to have a T pickup. That & maybe a '48 Ford truck... -

If you think it is bad on a motorcycle, it ain't just you. The kid that pulled away from a stop sign & crashed into the side of my trailer tires as I went through the intersection @ 55 mph (I didn't have a stop sign) said he never saw me. I'm 10' tall & 8' wide...big ol' white Mack truck and he didn't see me. A person on a motorcycle doesn't stand a chance unless they EXPECT not to be seen. Best piece of advice I was given when I was learning how to ride was "Ride like you are invisible...pretend NOBODY can see you, because they probably won't. IF they do, it'll be a pleasant surprise...but WHEN they don't, you'll be ready for it." -
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013/10/20/administration-responding-to-pressure-for-answers-on-messy-obamacare-site/ US population = roughly 316,915,890 people. Obamacare website has 19,000,000 unique visitors...so about 6% of the population has visited the site...and of those people, a whopping 500,000 applications have been received. In other words, 2.6% of the 6% of the population who have viewed the website has actually applied for coverage. 1/10 of 1% of the population has applied...and THAT allegedly "confirms" that Americans want this crap? And how many of those applications were duplicates? Heard about that on the news the other day, too... http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/19/health/obamacare-enrollment-launch-overview/index.html?c=&page=2

When did they stop teaching people how to drive?

Driving for too many people is that burdensome task they are forced to do in order to get to where they want to go. They don't enjoy doing it, and would rather be doing ANYTHING else. It is nothing more than a chore to them, and so anything that can be done to make that chore less burdensome has been welcomed with open arms...automatic transmissions was the beginning...the car can now shift for you. Then came crumple zones & air bags to take away the hurt when you crash. ABS removed the need to properly apply the brakes. Traction control meant you didn't need to know how to control your throttle input either. It's all been one sad progression over the years, and as each new technology "proves" itself to spare ignorant lives, the DRIVERS among us suffer. Every new gadget strips away the ability to maintain control over the vehicle. Hell...try finding a NEW vehicle with a manual transmission on a showroom floor! Special order only...IF that is even an option...and most of the rebates & discounts only apply to dealer stock, so if you want it you'll have to pay for it. And people wonder why I don't have any "new" vehicles...IT'S 'CUZ THEY ALL SUCK!!! -
My '96 F250 4x4....460cid 5-speed....bringing home the new-to-us horse trailer she bought on Saturday. Trailer looks mighty good on there if I do say so myself.

Geez, that's like stepping into a 5-star restaurant just to take a shit in their bathroom & leaving without ever getting a table to enjoy the fine cuisine...

Farmington is off 74 up by Peoria. Fairfield is just the other side of 64 over towards Evansville IN...'bout a couple hundred miles apart.
-
Whereabouts in Southern Illinois are you? Says Fairfield...but that's dern near 2 hours NORTH of here...

They are different for my CH. Mack has oil, Monroe is gas charged.
-
I bought some Monroe shocks for the steers. Put Mack shocks on the drives (about the same price & in stock...could only get 3 of the 4 if I bought Monroe). Bent one within a month & had to replace it. Less than a year later, steers were wearing funny...one of 'em was junk again. Bought the Mack shocks & ain't had to mess with 'em in over 3 years. Still the same Mack shocks on the drives that I bought back when I tried those Monroes on the steer. Personally, the extra cost of the OEM part more than pays for itself in durability and longevity.

I was a little disappointed when I picked it up, though...wasn't at ALL what I was EXPECTING. I thought for SURE there would've been pics of Obama, Reid, Pelosi, and others along with some of their cohorts in the media...but instead it was just donkeys. Bummer. -

PBO has an insurance policy assuring that sort of thing WON'T happen...NOBODY wants to see the current #2 as the #1. -

http://bigstory.ap.org/article/poll-gop-gets-blame-shutdown Yup....that's a 37% approval rating. If it drops another point, he'll tie Bush's all time low. It took the media 6 years of constant bashing and full on attempts to tear the man down in order to get Bush's numbers that low...can you imagine where Obama's numbers would be if he received even a FRACTION of that sort of treatment? Instead, they cover for him...do everything they can to protect the man....and he's still in the toilet. If only we had a truely unbiased media.... -

They are SPENDING MONEY to close privately run businesses that happen to be located on federal land, national parks and monuments which are typically not staffed and cost nothing to keep up, as well as parks and recreational areas which are supported 100% by user fees. They have spent money shuttering places which actually GENERATE revenue for the federal government. The closures have NOT been funding-related at all, but rather the most visible things which can be closed in a manner most likely to cause disruptions to ordinary citizens. Personally, if a prolonged shutdown is what it will take to get rid of Obamacare, so be it. Whatever it takes.
