Upgrading The Dash
Lmackattack replied to Lmackattack's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Will get more pics in the day time. Im waiting for some new gauge covers, and emblem tags for the 4 diffrent temp gauges. After I get those in a quick wipe with armorall and she will shine! -
been working on the interior of the cab the last few months. Lots of Rewireing stuff and cutting out the spliced in wires. This truck had that goofy 121 Antilock braking system that used alot of air switches, signal switches sencors etc... lots of wires that were un plugged and left louse. So now was a good time to zip tie them up in bundels and tuck them away. while I was back in there I decided to change out the wood grain switch panel so it matched the other 2 panels that had the black textured look.I had painted the wood grain panel black but you could see that they did not match...it always bothered me! I installed the dash turn signal indacators, new switches for the marker and head lights. re wired alot of the gauge bulbs. once I got that done I thought it would look cool to have some oil temp gauges. cut the large panel to accept the temp gauges and wired them up. All I need to do now is screw in the sending units and run the signal wire to a fire wall 4 post junction block. I found some gauge covers that fit nicely but need a few more. also need a gauge for the open hole. Think I will use a clock or a air restriction gauge. While having all this fun I made a new air horn chain from Bull dogs Leash (he wont mind) while making the air horn chain I installed a Headliner that a Fellow BMT member let me pull from a old valueliner.

Mack Milionaires

one thing I liked about the older Mack transmissions is that they had a positve feel for the gear change. its like a light switch. your in or out. if you miss you get a scratch. it was hard to "bang into gear" you really needed to force the stick in if your revs were off. This new Junk if your just a few RPM off it will give a split sec scratch, fall into the gate and "bang" into the gear. even with gentel stick Presser its very unforgiving. Sometimes you think your Reved matched and "Bang" I find myself then trying to go easy and you still will meet resistance. -

the first few years of my Driveing career all I drove were 237/5 speed, 285/6speeds or 300/6speeds. First time I got into a truck with a 13 speed or 18 speed. I found myself shifting way to slow. In the big city I love the 5 and 6 speeds as you dont have to shift as much putting along in traffic. For the big road I liked the 9 and 12 speed macks as you could maintain a faster road speed pulling the grades -

Park/trailer Dash Valves
Lmackattack replied to Ossablt's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
TRUE. I dont know what the exact rules are for spring or non spring brakes. Regardless It would not stop me im just a law braking trucker -
Figures. you will have to go testing to find what each terminal is for. once you know what terminal does what hook it up directly to the sending unit and test the range of the gauge. if it works normal hooked directly to the sending unit. then I would test the wires in the truck. you may have a bad ground, signail wire, or hot, hopefully its just a louse plug...

Park/trailer Dash Valves
Lmackattack replied to Ossablt's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Yes you can but I think the problem will be if you louse the trailer or a air line the flip style valve will not "pop out" to contain service air in the tractor?. IF you can live with that then all you should need is valves that will exhaust when you set the spring brakes. the other issue is it may not be DOT approved if you need an inspection? -
Yea Barry and the Watts mack team has given us the best Mack website to share and learn from. Seams like just yesterday I was on the old BMT MSN site. thinking about it now and its been about 10 full years now that we have had a place to talk about Macks. Thanks Barry!!!!

does the gauge have a ground to it? I know on the R models the fuel gauge needs a Hot,ground and signal wire. Lookig at the back of the gauge it should have I,G,S (ignition, ground, signal)note make sure they are all connected and the ground is clean. If you can remove the gauge wire it up next to the fuel tank and test it by moving the float with you hand. If it works normal like this this look into the trucks wireing for the problem. Trent

you will get a hop with a warped clutch. think of it like a warped rotor. if any of the clutch plates are warped just slightly it will try to bounce. if you are in to high of a gear it will do this. Will also get a bounce from wheel slip if the powerdivider is kicked in. dont feel bad about getting stuck in the snow. its very easy. I got my tractor stuck this morning in its parking spot. Got a whole 3" before it slipped and dug in. had a wheel locked up so that dident help. It took 15 mins of rocking it back and forth to get it off of 2" of snow. Loaded your pretty much good to go but bob tail or empty good luck on any hill if you stop.

never mind found a kit that has the sender with misc unions that allow you interchange thread sizes. found them for $16 online. Mack Wanted $55 each and that was with "D" code LOL!!!!! Trent.

ok Picked up the new oil temp gauges tonight. Saw under the lens that they are MFG by Teleflex. Did a search and came up with this page with the sending unit info http://gfretwell.com/electrical/teleflex%20senders.pdf says I need a type E sending unit. (SW style) for 140-320 F gauge. next question is what thread size is the most common on the block, trans, and rears? I remember seeing some ports with plugs in them but Im not up on the thread size. anyone want to take a guess or know off the top of their head. these are the 3 sizes 1/8 NPT 3/8 NPT 1/2 NPT

Bears vs Packers 2pm sunday... Im holding my breath for further comment. In the mean time this is for all you Packers fans.....

NO but I could use that towel right about now

yea thats a good idea to get the sleeve cold so it drops in. just hope the injector hole dont get to tight with it? Over at the railway museum they have to sweat the steel "tires" on the steam locomotive wheels. they have this huge flame ring to heat the steel tire and then they have to quickly drop it on the wheel and hammer it down into place before it cools. Kinda cool to watch.

Just googled her name and she sure was a good looking girl for her day. Im digging her "top heavy" style LOL
-
Yea. I had made a comment the other day about how silly it is trying to up load a pic. Seams the system cant size it or if you post more than 2 they remove them and put them up as a link only. I feel that when ever were trying to show off or show some pics of trucks you have to go back in time and do it the hard way. I like to open a web page to surf the new content and have the pics pop up as its loading. Its why I rarely link pics over there. to much BS. I will search for Truxnut and will send him a PM

I like the ATHS site better than the old one but think there is much better ones out there. I noticed Frank Surber does not post as much either? John evans, Bill D and a few other names I cant think of are MIA. to bad because When I first joined they had alot to offer us with their rich trucking background

must have missed that day on the ATHS site. what was that all about? John was a great guy was wondering where he went? hate to see the good ones leave.

Last few evenings after work I have spent at the yard redoing the interior of a friends Mack Superliner. Got a nice warm bay to pull it into to work on so its esay. Last night I had Removed all the Door handels, interior panels, headliner rear wall etc... put them in the corner of the shop so I dont louse them. Night was over cleand all the tools up and got her ready to park outside. I Jump in the truck, start it up and back her out. Park her in its spot, set the brake, turn the key to off, pull the throttle stop and kill the big v8. Great. Reach for the door handel..oh um its not there.......... and neither is the other side. oh..*&^%... no window crank hanels either? Ok. vent windows open! crap.... my fat arm can reach the out side door button!!! OK So im sitting there for a min thinking how in the hell did I just do this to myself. look on the floor for anything that I can use to turn the square door handel stub. Nothing, Try and open it with my hand un my pants pocket, nope the keys and tried to sandwich the stub and turn it, nope. So Ireach in my pocket to get my phone to call for help. fumbeling in my pockets I pull out a phone, dollar bill, some change and a 3/8 open end wrench that I mistakenly took home from work. Guess what. that 3/8 wrench fit the square door handel stub like a glove. turn it and Im free! I get out looking to the sky. "THANKS DAD! or whoever told me to take that wrench home". I have locked my self out many of times but never in! Guess there is a first for everthing!
