  1. That one looks like a "Eastern" R700. Looking at the pic ,the steering box is on the inside of the frame, RS/RL had straight rails and the steering box was mounted on the out side. early RS/RL (Pre 73,)had hoods simmilar to the R700s but the grill opening was bigger and the bottom part of the grill extended downward. later RS/RL700s (73' and on)had taller hoods to accomodate the larger grill but had the same length as a R700 R700s had the same basic hood design of the R600s but they were longer and had a slightly diffrent angle to accept the cowl being farther back,Also there were "side extension panels" behind the fenders There were also diffrent hood lines on the top part of the hoods If you have ever seen a Valuliner hood you will see that some of them have a diffrent body line (top of hood) than standard R600 hoods.   3. "but then you miss out on some of the improvements in the newer models." such as ???? Besides the better machining and longer life span of new diesels I see very little that intrests me. I know computers make life a little more simple at the dealer ship. but I like to work on my own stuff. Dearerships rates come with a hefty cost and some times paying the dearship is the only way out with computer models. I m not looking to make it rich off of trucking but a few extra grand every year is very nice.
  4. just wondering about something here. Can people get around these BS regulations if they continue to buy older engines and rebuild them? What I am thinking is if I can buy a few used E6 or ENDT675 and rebuild them when they get tired. Can I avoid the laws this way if I ever jump into trucking full time?
  5. I will be out of town that weekend . Even if I was in town I would need to take a few days off work and have some deeper pockets as its 800 miles from me. It would cost me about $798 there and back not including hotel costs. I would like to head out there some day with a friend pulling one our rigs on a low boy and split the fuel cost. Someday Trent

  7. HERE IS MY OPINION (S) If a truck has a blown engine and bad frame it is just worth what the rest of good parts it can be sold for. I see many fair parts trucks sell for $1000 just to get the thing out of the way. I think you may be able to deal with this guy because there is no way he can sell it and the new owner drive it away. if he is not willing to part it out he may just be happy with taking a fair deal to see it gone. I would pay anyware from $1000-$1300 for a "junkyard dog" and up to $5000 for a fair running truck. thats just my pocket book holding me back. There are many macks I would pay 10k for and put back to work if I had deeper pockets. For refrence I got my RS700 for 3K and drove it home. I would think non running superliner would bring that or less?? again, just my opinion Trent

  9. welcome to the site. Dont have any clue to what the Elite model is or came with , I think we had them over here under the "CH" models then again model names can differ from the US to your side of the pond. I think you did the right thing and found a truck with spring rears as thats the only wayto be 100% shure that the power is getting to the ground evenly. air bags are getting better but I still think a spring will do a better job. A simple clean of the fan motor and filter (if its still there) could help the AC problem, if not a AC leak test could be done to see if you are low. Be carefull how dark you tint the windows. looking out a tinted window an night is a PITA when the guage lights are reflecting off the inside of them. Look on ebay for some Mack logos or go to a local licenced printer that would have licenced use of all the diffrent mfg trademakes. Thats how i found My Mack logo stickers and they were able to make them to my prefered colot and size Trent

  11. its not just truck rims that I see abused by shops, car and bike rims get the same treatment??? Just picked up some bike tires and had them balanced. I went to pick them up and saw those stick on weights on the rims. I asked why they did not use the weights that mount to the spokes?? he just looked at me funny, I said please do it right. for a $35 a tire balance fee you should get them back washed and a nice chrome valve cap...(i got a plastic one) same with car rims.My friend just got a nice set of "Bling Bling" rims and guess where the weights were? on the out side??
  12. like greg said. normal flat ground I shift 1-2-3 in the direct side and then split 4-5 to keep it in the sweet spot. On a hill I may split 2-3 just to keep at it a little better. Just my .02
  13. I just saw a superliner last month with a 36" ablebody sleeper and dual exhaust. the mufflers were mounted to the brace that bolts to the frame. (simmilar to an R model brace) The sleeper was bolted to the frame and the cab was air ride. It was not a factory sleeper install but it looked that way. Most R models used the ablebody sleeper that had "cut outs" for the mufflers. Sounds like your eagle sleeper is square with no cut outs for mufflers???? You might have to make cut outs or move the sleeper back? What about straight pipes with no mufflers or muffler under the cab?? The RS macks had the muffler(s) bolted to the cab corners, this looks to be the best way to get the mufflers closest to the cab, You could use that style set up but the mufflers would still stick out behind the cab about 4-5" and possibly interfear with the sleeper?   14. Good thought John. I installed the fan clutch last year and I dont recall if it had a spacer or not?. The fan was close to the rad. I cant rember if the hood or rad had a slide adjustment but I know it was all the way back giving me all the space that is offered with OEM parts. What Intercooler did you use? I checked the thickness of a 4v 300 intercooler and It was about 3 1/2 thick
  15. not trying to bring your idea down, Im all for new and improved Mack power There is a formula that you need to use when looking for a diffrent turbo. It takes into account for volumetric efficency (sp?) Engine displacement, intake air temps, etc.... all this info is needed to find a turbo that will work for "x" Rpm range. Every turbo has a diffrent efficency island. This "island" is where the turbo performs its best without lag or choking exhaust. This "island" is important not just to exhaust flow but to how much heat it genarates that the Intercooler needs to remove. That what you need to know to find the proper turbo. its a complex formula that I cant fully explain myself. I have found some info searching thry google. Problem you may run into is that OEM mfg dont like to post Turbo maps for other companys to see and possible test with....basicly im saying good luck finding an oem turbo map LOL With the turbo formulas found on car sites I was able to do a turbo swap on my car with much help from other hot rodders. I made a 2.0 liter turbo go from 160WHP to 260WHP with just a few mods and safety items. not big HP for the V8 guys but Its a sleeper to most sports cars on the road today and I can drie it to work with out worry!!!!
  16. Shure it will work fine and look cool but I think you will just be adding more items to fail and extra weight. Turbos are considered a muffling device to begin with so adding twins will not realy give the sound that you are looking for. I think that one single stack is louder than twins, maybe its just the way the pipe exits are pointed?. The other issue is finding the correct turbos for each side of the engine. Most mack turbos I have seen do not have wastegates to control boost levels. i.e properly sized for the intended set up. with todays turbos advancements I think you could use a single modern turbo that has a waste gate to controll the boost level, reduce lag and improve air/exhaust flow. I have seen some of these new engines with turbos that alow air to "bypass" the compressor wheel to help with low end power. you can hear them spool quickly even at a low engine speeds. just another advantage with newer turbos. just steer away from last year turbos that Mack was useing on some of there engines. Many people had problems with them, and availibility was an issue also. Not entirely macks fault as its not there design but it kinda fell in macks lap as it was an item used on there engines. just my .02
  17. Good point Ron. I cant fit a intercooler from a 4V 300 between the grill and the Radiator on my truck. I have about 2 1/2 inches and I need 3 1/3 to make one fit Trent

KEVIN If your talking about the tip turbine engines,I think there were 3 diffrent HP ratings with the tip turbine air charge cooled engines 285/315/ and 350 rateings?? not shure if the part numbers vary between HP ratings? my vin # is RS786LST32474 and I have the 285HP tip turbine, you should be able to find a part number at your local Mack dealer with this vin number.   19. my B model feels like it has power steering and it does not. as long as its rolling its not to bad. My R model has no power steering and it is harder to turn the wheel than my B model is.

  21. Dont have any direct info on these rail trucks but I did stop at a Truck stop out in AZ last month and talked with a BNSF crew. They had stopped in for fuel or eats. I chatted with the driver and he said that the Westernstar could pull about 10 cars loaded with ballast or other M.O.W goods. Top speed was restricted to 25mph when on the rails. not shure if thats empty or pulling cars. He said that the automatic transmission was very HD to allow low rail speeds with all the weight it has to pull. Driver also said that his truck had been as far east as denver and west to L.A. He had thought that the BNSF was buying a few more this year to replace some rail only MOW engines. I would figure each unit is worth about a cool million after all the goddies are added on. Big air compressor, HD transmission, rail wheels,etc... the thing weighs something crazy as well to aid in traction. the truck had couplers at both ends. If you ever get a chance look at oneup close. cool stuff

  23. I have seen NOS vent windows on ebay go for crazy$$$ best soulition is to find a used one from a old truck someware. Dont think you can get the complete window new anymore, However, The rubber seal should still availible thru Watts mack
  24. My 285 tip turbine was pushing 15-16 psi before I messed with the fuel. With the fuel turned up I see about 17-18 psi (19-20 psi in the cold winter months) Like Glenn said I can mash the pedal thru all 5 gears but the EGTs do get a little high. Im from the midwest so hills are far and few between. There are many diffrent turbo specs and they all may produce slightly diffrent boost levels. Trent
  25. Powder coating is farely cheep compaired to chrome. For refrence I had a go cat frame and 4 rims sand blasted and powdercoated for $250. Its stronger than regular paint as its baked on. I have not had anything chromed but have had quoits for the trim on the hood and all the little pices were going to coast me around $300 with no gaurentee of the finish Trent.
