  1. I was talking with a friend a week ago and he was telling me that there was 350HP mack with the tip turbine side mount charge air/intercooler...how were those engines?? I would think that at 350HP the side mount would be to small to cool the intake air??? and another question I always wondered with tip turbines... If the tip turbine pushes air across the intercooler/coolant fins.. where does that air go after it makes it way across the intercooler??I cant hear it escapeing under the hood... but cant see if it has a way back to the intake??? whats the story Trent
  2. I think that when you go to renew your licence in IL it is posible that you will have to take the written CDL if you have a few speeding tickets or you got a d.u.i, accident etc.... if you have a clean record I think they just give you your new licencs and your on your way.. you have to do the written CDL test if you let your licence expire. did that last March by mistake..was 3 days over the experation date (birthday) and had to do my written CDL... I aced the CDL test but almost failed the car test ... than again, with the Gov. George Ryan licence for bribe scandal that happend 5 years ago (right when I was getting my CDL ) Everyone that I know that got there CDL around that time has been retested when they renewed there licence... funny how that happend... Trent
  3. I think an easy way to tell if you have a 2 v or 4 v head is to look where the injector lines enter the head. my 2v 285 hp has the injector lines on the driver side on the top of the heads next to the valve covers. I think the 4v head has the lines that incert into the sides of the heads?? could be wrong but thats what I have noticed on my companys trucks. or just pop off the valve covers...
  4. I agree about the in seat time.. I do however think that the book time is good for the NEW drivers as it makes them think a little.. I dont know how many drivers (mostly my age) I have met that dont know the basics of air brakes or able to indentify the componets on the trucks...I just had to retake my CDL written test and I passed with no problems.. It really is a simple test if you understand the basics of a trucks and how they drive Trent
  5. I know plenty of guys that have been driving trucks for 20 + years with no CDLs.. many were granfatherd in then left the industry and came back with no CDL because they let them go thinking they would not need them again... Its a slap on the wrist and a $$$ fine. I guess it depends what risks you want to take.
  6. Looking good.. I know lots of people ask about the 285 and 300+ engine instals. looks like it went pretty smooth for your truck?? Nice job and WE NEED MORE PICS!!! Trent
  7. Thanks for the ideas everyone... I searced for the riv nuts and found some but they were to small for the applacation. I also figure that sence only one riv nut was going to be used it might have allowd the light to shake vibrate and possibly work the riv nut louse and let it spin in the hole....so.... i just cut a small 1/2 round hole in the cab and used a standard nut and bolt combo... I then painted the aera to prevent rust and used a rubber plug that a auto body friend uses for paintless dent repair. The interior panel will cover the spot anyways so im not to concerned

  10. I searched google for your question and here are a few links I found . not shure if it helps but some questions were answered. http://aths.org/forum2/thread.asp?m=1405 http://www.ytmag.com/mm/messages/15944.html Trent
  11. Posted on the ATHS also..I removed a bolt off the outside of the rear cab wall on my R model. Im talking about the 2 bolts next to the rear window that some people mount an air line holder when they are bob tailing around. The bolt came out easy then the nut (welded to a stiffner plate or something) droped between the interior and exterior skins. No access hole to get between the panels!! Are ther any type of HD hardware simmilar to a drywall bolt that will securely hold a 4" Service lite to the rear cab wall. If not it looks like I will have to drill a 3/4" hole in the interior wall to get a 1/2 socket back there. Someone suggested a rivnut but im not fimmilar with them . only rivnuts I have seen were small, used for the marker light bolts Trent
  12. there was a Magnim on ebay a few months ago. I belive it was last working for north star transportation or something along that name. I had a sticker on the sleeper doors with the company logo?? anyways if its the same truck I spoke with the owner in NM 3 years ago. It was in good shape for the age and the interior was very clean. if this is the truck Dan Could you Email me any ifo to track it down Thanks Trent
  13. Welcome to the club Van, Lots of great people here (and a few screw balls) to help out with all your questions. Looks like you got a nice B model to restore there. First tip I can give you is to send a small 10-20 dollar donation along with your trucks vin number to the mack Museum and in return you will get all the factory build sheet records for your rig and possibly a 2" thick shop manual for dissasembly/troubleshooting of your trucks componets. The Mack Trucks Historical Museum Don Schumaker and Snowy Doe, Co-Curators 997 Postal Road Allentown, PA 18103 Telephone: 610-266-6767 Fax: 610-266-6823 Trent
  14. my friend has a newer (2001?) Fullsize Ford Pick up 4x4 with I belive he said is made by anothe MFG? possible IH diesel badged as a ford?? He has it set up to run on grease or diesel. It has some go fast mods for it as well. I was impressed when I drove with him from AZ to Chicago. It can take most stock cars off the line and up to highway speeds. not bad for a heavy pickup. It has a programable chip with 3-4 settings dependingon what he is doing with it. still gets stock MPG or better depending on how he is driving or what program he is useing. some of the older ford diesels pick ups I have driven seam to be a little sluggish. Most were service trucks so the extra weight of the body may jave caused that.
  15. I have heard from the oldtimers that the R700s and RS700s were macks "top dogs" of the R model family back in the day. Then the superliners took over. I dont know about you but the Superdogs and RS macks were always my top pic with the "new" macks. I still think they have nice body lines that many new trucks dont have because of aero concerns
  16. Also for larger radiators with the larger engines
  17. check ebay i see a set of them on there every few weeks. I belive the "new style" are plastic and the old ones will have glass lenzes and metal housings Trent
  18. lucky that train was not going fast. I wonder sometimes what people are thinking when driving!!!!!!!!!! I look both ways when walking across a hallway at work LOL how do people forget todo it over a RR track??? I beleve The last big boy moved under her own power wsa back in the late 50s early 60s soon after there reteriment. I think there is a UP challenger that is in operation for yerly shows?
  19. the centennial was an empressive diesel engine but not practical. I am guessing thats why it and the Big Boys were retired and we never saw another example like them again. I heard the Centennials had drive shaft problems between both engines? It is sad that the 800 sieres is gone along with the whole R family. Last summer I passed up a heavy haul company on eastbound I-80 just past salt lake city. On the low boy was 3 axel RD or DM800 with huge tires and a fancy paint job. I chatted with the driver for a few miles as we pulled over the hill and he said it was going to move a genarator. and some mineing stuff. he was a driver for both the pete lowboy rig and mack 800. he said if the mack could go faster than 40 MPH he would pull the pete on the lowboy and drive the MACK
  20. Moving one of North Americas largest steam Locomotive to a new site. its a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy . Engine weight is 762,000lb tender is 428,000lb Trent
  21. I have seen a few of those KW with the engine under the single seat cab. the cab was off centered werid looking truck??
  22. Gret vid larry . I cant wait to get mine out on the road again. its been to long!! I remember I could drive it like a 5 speed when bob tailing around. but its been 3 years sence I got to use both sticks!!!!
  23. My companys 440 V8 never gets hot but we dont have the hills to pull by me. It has a pyro gauge and it holds around 1100 if we do find a hill to climb. I find with most diesel engines I have driven if it starts to gets hot I can down shift to get the rpms up t 2100 or so and it will allow the fan to keep the engine cool. Only on long pulls out west have I ever had to pull over and let it cool for a few. One thing I never liked about the 6 speed trans behind maxidynes. was that the engine lugs when pulling the BIG hills and will start to get hot quickly, then the fan has a hard time trying to supply the needed air flow thry the rad to keep cool. Trent
  24. I liked the older ones for there apperace but thats about it. I drove a Rental century class last year and it rode very nice but had no balls at all. dont like the styling at all now. In my opinion it is just a cheep truck that has no real appeal to owner operaters.
