Are any of my fellow hoseheads/antique firetruck afficianados planning on attending the Spring Thaw next Sunday? I was contemplating gathering up a crew to go and support the young ladies working their way through Nun College maybe around 1 or 2:00 or so.......Anyone interested?? And for those of you who are not familiar with the Spring Melt (formerly known as the Spring Thaw) it is an annual 2-day event held by the Union Historical Fire Society. Saturday is an auction- lots of high dollar stuff. Sunday is the (indoor) flea market at the Allentown Fair Grounds....2-3 football fields of anything and everything FIRE. It used to be a pretty good place to find parts- everything from gauges to sheet metal to engine and transmission components, and also old equipment like hose, nozzles, etc. But lately with eBay and the rest of the social media world, the days of old stuff at "The Thaw" have been waning. It used to be THE PLACE to go to get parts. But for the last several years it has rapidly been turning into a gigantic t-shirt, patch and blue light show full of a bunch of unappreciative kids. However there are still long time holdout vendors that still come faithfully and if you root through their boxes long enough, you might just find that compound gauge you've been looking for the last 4 years. For me, it's only 15 minutes from the house, so going is a no-brainer (I guess thats a good thing.) I go and take small, medium and large and go to see old friends that I see there every year. It's a lot of fun. Oh and of course to support those young ladies working their way through Nun College because I see it as my civic duty to watch their breastisses errrr ahhhhh I mean support their endeavors.

joemac, about storage: 1. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT store it outside if at all possible, even with a cover. And those awning things are just about useless after the first good wind or snow. Additionally, check with your local code enforcement official about storing something in your driveway- many communities have ordinances forbidding storing "derelict" vehicles and/or large vehicles on your residential property. What municipality do you live in? 2. Check with the Supplees- last time I was over at the shop they had an awful lot of vacant space.....perhaps an arrangement could be made???

If you are going to restore an old Mack, you have come to the right place. Learn these two valuable resources: 1. The list of vendors (that have NOS and old, serviceable Mack parts and components) that the Mack Museum has (I believe it to be on their website.) 2. Get Watts Mack's phone number (Or find Barry on here) and program their number into your phone and/or his email address.

Interesting. I didn't even know Lipe was still in business- I have a Lipe clutch in the FWD, but shouldn't have any issues with it for a LONG time as it just barely broken in from being rebuilt in 2009- and if I do 500 miles in a year that's a lot!!!!! A guy in a clutch shop in Baltimore rebuilt it for me.

The manuals may be available through the Mack museum. Send them the serial number and ask for copies of the factory file and any manuals they may have, which will be sent to you for free- however when you get them THOU SHALT SEND THEM A SUITABLE DONATION CHECK. (Dont be cheap.) There is an 8-10 week wait on requests. And as suggested, call the Oreland Mack Branch on Lorraine Ave. Howard is usually there during daytime and Daniel shows up a few days a week after 1600.

Send an email with your serial number to Don Schumaker or give him a call, have the SN handy to give to him or whoever answers the phone, and request copies of your factory archives. There is a 6-8 week wait due to numerous requests and limited (volunteer) staffing. You will receive a very large and heavy box in the mail FOR FREE. When you do receive it, make sure you send them a donation check, and don't be cheap- you'll understand when you see what they send you.

Yup, if you are running internet explorer, if it's latest updates are not installed and don't correspond with the forum's software, it causes hiccups- or so I am told, use to happen to me here all the time. I have since switched to chrome, and have zero issues.

I find that running BMT on chrome works much better when posting links or pics.

My volunteer fire dept built a station 18 years ago and installed radiant floor heat at that time, and to this day it's still one of the best decisions made. If I ever build myself a shop you can damn well guarantee I will do the same thing. Spend the extra bucks and put insulation in the walls and ceiling. Even if you dont think you need it, do it anyways- insulation is cheap. You'll hold the heat in the winter and help to keep it cool in the summer. A good industrial air compressor, a couple'a heavy work benches (with a good sized grinder and a drill press) and a good sized parts washer are absolutely a necessity. As someone else said, be sure to incorporate some kind of heavy steel into the framing so that you can use chain or grip hoists to do heavy lifting. A bathroom with a shower and a deep/slop sink would be very nice to have, if you do incorporate plumbing make sure you put a washing machine into the plumbing calculations- then you wont annoy the wife when you wash the shop rags in the clothes washer/dryer in the house. (whistles innocently.....) An would be an office to do your paperwork, search the interwebs for pictures of Winfall Wimmim errrrr ahhhh I mean needed parts........making phone calls, a place to keep your manuals and books.......If I ever build a shop it's gonna have a second floor which will be for the no-wimmim allowed man-cave. Good to have: A good sized sandblasting/glass beading cabinet And, I wouldn't be doing my civic duty as a firefighter if I did not recommend that you install an NFPA-compliant sprinkler system. Protect yourself and your investments from fire!!!
