  1. Don't laugh- he is absolutely positively 100% correct!!! Randy, in fact that leads me back to a conversation we had the night you saw the truck and I raised the hood and you asked about the dual ignition being in firetrucks. What I forgot to add however (and 84superdog's comment made me remember) was the fact that many firetrucks were also delivered with magnetos as well- in case if the mechanical ignition/distrbutor failed, you would switch to magneto and keep trucking. Or, for in the event that you could not start it due to dead batteries, switch to magneto and hand-crank it to start it. This FWD however was not equipped with the magneto from the factory. No one from the company, including my father can remember if it came with a hand crank, either. But the flywheel does have the notched "clutch cut" for the hand crank. I would not want to hand crank this thing, let me tell you. My father DOES clearly remember having to hand-crank our 1948 Ward LaFrance pumper once or twice- says you had to do it just right or you could break your wrist or arm. It had the same identical 140GZ (F554G) Thunder Pumpkin under the hood.
  2. Why does everyone think that finding parts is such a hassle these days- with the infinite number of resources available through the internet- especially when you find places like this or facebook with the numerous groups on there....Parts can, have and will continue to be found!!! Another thing that you have to remember is that many parts are not exclusively Mack, such as the hydraulic wheel cylinders- the ones that Mack used from that time period were either of the big three- Ford, GM, or Mopar. My 1958 FWD uses a GMC master cylinder, and the clutch slave cylinder is a Ford master cylinder. In any case, brand new ones are still available to this day from Bendix and Wagner through NAPA and other distributors.
  3. Call ITE fire apparatus in Hagerstown, Md. They used to have a huge stock of CF parts as they used to be (dont know if they still are) well known for refurbishing CF chassis rigs. www,itefire.com
  4. Why,,,,,They were polishing the F.W.D. of course!!!!! What did you think they were doing?
  5. They were exhausted so I gave them the day off.
  6. ONCE in a while they actually do some good with their power. This is pretty cool- watch the video. http://www.myfoxphilly.com/story/23982219/batkid-ighting-crime-in-san-francisco
  7. This meme maker is GREAT!!!!!
  8. Yes and as you can see I have been practicing "No-Shave November."
  9. Yeah.....I imagine Harvey Eckert will put out a price for my head when I email this to him.......
  10. Not if they were smart.........
  11. The air horns are not Mack- probably Grover or Buell. If the spotlights you are talking about are the swivel ones on the corners of the cab, the best thing that can happen to them is getting destroyed. And they are not Mack, I forget who makes them, possibly Grote??? The bumper extension brackets I have to believe that a good frame man could fabricate.
  12. Hmmmm interesting.....If it's a 2-stroke I should have heard it......so should have the whole world.....And smelled it.....from 4 miles away.......and felt it....as I fall on my ass from slipping in the pee it leaves behind.........
  13. $24.00 will get you the island of Manhattan!!!!
  14. First thing you need to do is contact Don Schumacher at the Mack Museum- access his email through the Museum's portal off the Mack corporate website. Send him an email with the serial number of your truck, and in 8-10 weeks you will receive a large and very heavy package via UPS. It will be heavy because it will contain all of the factory records for your truck, plus engine, driveline and frame/body manuals. (several hundred pages each.) For this, thou shalt send the Mack Museum a nice donation- DONT BE CHEAP.
  15. Whats a Cummings? Never heard of it?????
  16. Ken....Although I certainly am interested (especially given that I will need more available seating by this June than the FWD currently offers) I am just posting for others at this point. If I came home with another truck, I would be living in your trailer.
  17. Something tells me she's trying to change the subject..........
  18. Disconnect battery. Chock wheels, place in gear. Safety first.

  20. Here's a later MC version that I took on the Manhattan side of the Holland Tunnel early on a Sunday morning probably 20+ years ago (back when you could do something like that because the PA Cops knew the difference between a Truck/Fire Buff and a Terrorist.)
  21. That FDNY MB was a tractor for a tiller-ladder and then later converted by FDNY Shops with the 750 Holmes and a body I believe was built in-house.
  22. Sorry. No can do.
  23. Stifle yourself. Here. Remain calm, all is well.
  24. 1958 F.W.D. saying to Slpwlkr: "When we get home, I'm gonna punch your momma square in the mouth."
  25. Yup. They're cheap enough. Do the whole thing instead of having that spring pop out and taking your head off. If the slack adjusters look like they are in good shape and dont have any slop just take em off, clean em up real good and grease em and you should be ok.
