If my wife flashed you, you would have a heart attack.

To this day, whether I am in the FWD or my 4-Wheeler, I always flash passing big trucks into the lane, and most of the time I don't get a thank you flash in return. When I am in my 4-Wheeler I have to wonder if the ones who thank me are surprised they got a flash to "come on in." I taught my wife to flash in big trucks, too. She couldn't be bothered with it until one time I took her for a spin in a buddy's rig on I-78 just up one exit from the house- a grand total of an 8-mile round trip and in that time got cut off 4 times. Made her sit in the rocking chair, too- so that she could learn to appreciate what operators go through. After that she respected big trucks more and flashes them in regularly. Once in a while I even catch her saying "you missed me, come on in driver...." which I always used to say on the radio and still to this day will say out loud......LOL

This topic rears it's ugly head every once in a while. Many states differ, and what makes it even more confusing is the fact that the very officials of the states (State Troopers/DOT Employees) who are charged with enforcing these very laws either have little knowledge of them or are completely wrong in their enforcement of them. In the STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA for example: One does NOT need a CDL to operate a privately owned antique vehicle that is not operating within commerce- no matter what the combination is; whether it be a straight truck weighing less or more than 26,001 lbs. It can be a Tractor and Trailer weighing 35,000 GVWR- as long as it is a privately owned and registered as such and is not operating within the laws of commerce- no CDL is needed, however you do need to possess the appropriate non-CDL operators license. My 1958 FWD Firetruck has a GVWR of 31,000lbs however only weighs 18,500- were it a commercial vehicle operating in the laws of commerce, yes I would need to have a class B CDL. It does not have air brakes so the air brake endorsement would not be needed. But again, it is a privately owned vehicle and registered as an antque/historic vehicle and is operated for private purposes and not for commercial gain, I do not have to have a CDL. When I first bought it, I was curious as to the proper operating requirements. I wont bore you with the long story but the short version involves several hours of telephone calls to one of my elected representatives office staffers, and another hour or two with people at PENNDOT in Harrisburg- which probably resulted in several bottles of MAALOX and TYLENOL being consumed on their part as I could not get the same answer from any two people. So I made a stink and in the end, I received a letter from the Commissioner of PENNDOT himself, stating the requirements. I have never been pulled over, I do not intend to get pulled over, but that letter remains to this day- in the glove box. All that being said, do yourself a favor, and obtain a CDL- it's in everyones best interests.

YUP. That's the one. I have a source of new old stock knobs. Might even have or be able to get the knob for the Ross relief valve too. I will post the name and contact number later today, don't have it in front of me right now. -
Well shoot there's your problem right there!!!!
-
They cant find one. He messaged me asking about a USA passenger side tank- I said "yeah should be able to find one...." But then we started chatting and I said "wait a minute, are we sure a USA passenger side tank is the same as an Aussie driver side tank?" Thats why we're asking. If they are one in the same I will try to find him a USA passenger side tank.

I can get him the black plastic "twist to lock" knobs- new old stock even......Just want to see a pic from him to double check before I waste anyone's time. The relief valve handle I dont know about that but may have a line on that too from the same source. -

Hooters vs. TK: I ask the masses....Does it really matter??? -
Matt, have a question from a friend down in Australia who is asking a question for his Mate who is restoring an R-Model (right-hand drive mind you!!!) He wants to switch from the square step-side fuel tanks to the round ones. Would the (USA) Passenger side step/fuel tank be the same as an Aussie (driver) side tank or are they unique??? Where would one find one?? Do you know of any right-hand drive Mack parts sources??? Any help/advice is appreciated!

This is what happens when you piss me and my boys (and girls) off.....This pus-bag in this R-Model portable gas station cut me off one night and then gave me the finger- so me and my boys said "Yeah we can't allow you to disrespect us in such fashion." That's me in the mohawk in my younger days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bmf-HCCZYOg

This is why bulkhead-mounted automatic belt-fed weapons should be legal for me.

Ultimately when you do go to reset the wheels on the rims, you will scratch something somewhere somehow- it's unavoidable. Just accept it as one accepts the fact that the income tide will destroy the sandcastle you just worked on for three hours. When your paint guy mixes up your paint, always always always have him (or her....) mix up some extra for you to put into a quart AND a gallon can BUT WITHOUT THE HARDENER!!!! Have him throw in the additive that keeps paint without hardener fresh (think "Sta-Bil" for paint without hardener in it....I cant remember what the product is called.....) Get a quart for small touch ups and a gallon for bigger touch ups. Dont forget to get the hardener from the guy who mixes the paint for you.

My source may have both, post a pic of one of your other discharge handles and knob to confirm my suspicion. -

Uses a set screw to fasten to the valve handle....I think I have a source for you, but post a picture here just to make sure. -
Oh and I would do two or three rows of E-Track right up the length of the trailer walls, in between the wood slats, and smash-riveted to the posts (not pop riveted.) Lots of work but well worth it.

Ken I have never loaded anything wheeled into a van before...But its not impossible. If it were me, I would either pull or back it in, with the heavier end tires/wheels butted up against the rise for the forward deck. Then I would put it in gear and set the brake of course, and then use the E-Track bars placed against the front of the tractor, with blankets or something for padding. Then maybe a few E-Track straps placed strategically for additional tie-down. Now I see why you would want floor-mounted. I know E-Track straps are strong but personally knowing what I know from towing I would want to chain down anything with wheels- hence a flatbed. But thats me....
-
I was talking about wall-mounted. As Vision said, you can use E-Track bars (think load locks for E-Track) and create a second deck over floor-loaded freight, as long as its not too high and drastically changes the trailer's COG........Jevic did it wall-mounted for this very purpose. Was great for lightweight freight and theoretically if you did it right could double the usable space in the trailer. I only saw floor mounted E-Track once and it was counter-sunk in a "trench" in the floor.

The black oval knob? -
I took the Mistress to a firetruck show today just west of Allentown Pa. It was pretty hot out and I forgot to check the coolant before I left, plus I had to get fuel so I pulled over at this place off I-78 at the Lehigh Street exit. These nice ladies (said they were from Winfall) were working in the establishment and offered to hold down my running board for a few minutes and keep an eye on "SMALL" while I checked the water in the radiator. They said they were working their way through Nun College. Asked me for a ride but I told them I didn't have time and to watch out for a guy that should be along shortly who would take them right back to Winfall.
-
Ken when I worked in the trailer shop at Jevic, we used E-Track exclusively that was huck bolted to the main pillars and then riveted (true bash and smash rivets, not pop rivets) to each and every stud. If you do it right they become bombproof, and in fact even contribute to the overall strength of the trailer infrastructure itself.
