I dont think it makes a whole heap of difference with a 6 or 12 speed because most people I know who drive these dont split the lower 1,2,3&4 gears just split into high range in fifth so unless you are hauling big heaps of tons I reckon it would be fine just a bit slow getting to top speed with a big load on Paul
-
With a Maxi torque box deep reduction is in front of the main box not behind it the box behind is range change ie high low split there is a reason that you are not suppose to split the gears with the deep reduction box and I think it may have something to do with the weight and speed that the shafts are spinning because the whole gear box is trying to change not just three gears at the end but I could be wrong There is meant to be a mechanical inter lock Im pretty sure it is under the main lid and I seem to remember that that if the shifter rod is put in 180degrees around the wrong way it then disables it I think the notch is the on the wrong side of the shaft its been a few years since I have had one of these boxes apart Paul

I would think you have 44's not because they have six bolts but as far as I know 44 and up have those type of axles Here is a picture of mine because I have 58's and they have 8 stud and are chrome with a slight tint of rust these days they always weep oil out from the center where the welsh plug is have had a couple of goes at trying to fix it over the years but it dosnt drip it just sought of stays wet but not wet to touch I guess its rust proofing perhaps As you can see the spring in mine is huge it would be twice as big as 34's or 38's and at least half as big again as 44's rides as rough as guts when Im bob tail but once theres a trailer on it smooths right out I have thought about taking leaf out of the springs to try and improve the ride but then I just think man a bit Paul Paul -

one more thing I was thinking is if you are going to twin stick it only shift one stick at a time until you work it out a bit other wise if you stuff it up its all to easy to end up with trans stuck in neutral as the interconnecting shaft in the box can stop spinning and then the only way to get moving is to stop and start again I always find the less I rush the easier it is so slow right down with the actions on the stick as a truck is heavy it will have heaps of momentum to keep it moving but the first thing is work out what the transmission is and then you can work out how shift it Paul -
yep welcome aboard mate Paul

mate the clutch brake only works when the clutch pedal is all the way down to the floor so what this means is for driving and changing up and down gears DO NOT PUSH THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR as no matter how well you try to match speeds the input shaft will stop spinning and grind every time the only time you will use the clutch brake is when you are stopped and what it does is stop the input shaft from spinning so that the shaft speeds in the box are matched ie both are stopped spinning other wise you have to sit and wait and wait and wait oh yeah and wait some more and if its a Mack Maxitorque better lite a smoke as those shafts weigh so much you will have wait a long time for those shafts to stop spinning and if the gears arent lined up you let the pedal back out to have another go at getting the shafts lined up again So as you can see the clutch brake is only used to stop the input shaft from spinning when you are starting off Another thing if you are coasting up to a stop and push the clutch pedal down to the floor and the truck is in gear the whole truck will be trying its hardest to tear the clutch brake out so you need to keep the pedal a inch or two off the floor when in use unless you are trying to start off stick with it and it will get much easier real quick once you under stand the way its meant to work also might pay to adjust the clutch to make sure there is enough clearance for the clutch brake to work correctly hope some of this might help Paul -

yep did some check of my own that fact that its gotta be gone in 10 days or the property returns to them even though you have paid for it sought of soured the deal for me as Im in Australia might take a few weeks to get it out and to a holding yard its to risky to leave it for someone else to pickup the amount of times one gets let down with the parts coming and arrives three days late wouldnt do much good for me I can just imagine someone turning up three days late to pick it up to much money to risk like that Paul

well had some spare time today so I had a look see at what figures I could find In 1968 Truck and Bus did a road test between Melbourne and Sydney for people that dont no thats around 800km proberly 850 km crossing the Great Dividing range twice thats the main mountain range on the eastern sea board of OZ runs top to bottom of the main land anyway it was one the first 4 Maxidynes in OZ pulling a pantec I think it said gross weight around 32 tons it averaged 6 MPG neat The truck test I was thinking of was in 1978 300 Maxidyne with 12 speed OD 5.02-1 ass end gross 35 tons it got 5.5 MPG on its test, the company that owned the truck said that it averaged around that but had got as good 7 MPG In 1981 there was a Cruise Liner with a E6 - 350 12 speed 4.64 ass end pulling a double deck stock crate gross weight 39 tons got 5.1 MPG which isnt to bad considering pulling a double crate is like pulling a big parachute behind you I my self cant give you anything special because I dont have a tipper but cruising around local work with a float "lowloader or maybe low boy" I would have expected around 6.5 MPG with a semi with a high load 5.5 MPG road train doubles about 80 tons around between 5 and 5.5 a lot depends on were you are as in open plains or trees and hills open plains really sucks the fuel I have been down to 55 - 60 km/h across the Hay plains in NSW and once I get up into the scrub and few hills in Queensland I cruise at around 80 - 85 km/h same load just a bit further north my Mack is a 320 cool power ( Thermodyne ) 12 speed OD 5.73 ass end So I guess all this dosnt mean much but the one common thing I have to say is these older motors out perform the new trucks just little bit slower but by far a lot cheaper to run and to bye kinda makes me wonder why they stopped making them but thats a whole other storey Paul
