This caught my eye on Sunday Today 25th April is ANZAC day in Australia and NewZealand It commemorates the landing of the Australian and NewZealand Army Corps at Gallipoli I'm guessing this was getting the once over before the parade and will cart veterans today Sadly we lost our last WW2 veteran only a number of weeks ago, no media mention of it except on the radio Anyway I'll let blokes Google ANZAC day if you want Paul

Must be flash donuts at that price, I never pay anything like that Anyway I guess I'm a tight ass with short arms and deep pockets I look at tyres alike this, it's not so much the stuff around when one blows but the damage they do I have never changed a tyre based on it's age, I only change them on their condition Having said that, the last blow out was on a steer on a freeway in the wee small hours, from the time I felt the tyre belt seperating until it went pop wasn't very long I was climbing a hill and the familiar thump thump as the belt started coming apart was probably only a few humdred yards until pop So if I was doing 65 MPH instead of 65 kmh things may of been very different Having just typed all of that, got to a big town and just bunged tyres on all the way around the little truck 7 tyres, the bloke fitting them said "even the spare" and words of advice from my Dad ran out my mouth " my spare is my last chance so it has to be the best, yes even the spare" So I guess my pointless ramblings are, if it's on your mind then change them, it makes things a lot more enjoyable to drive when Im not worried about them Paul

How do they damage the turbo ? Not been a smart ass, I thought once the pressure was up a bit the butterfly was pushed open by the exhaust, maybe when they start to seize up I know the guillotine type added a lot of pressure and heavier exhaust valves were needed to stop valves floating I have never heard of issues with the butterfly types that are used on Japanese and European trucks Paul

Back when (heaven forbid) Volvo first came out with N and F series and probably the G series as well there transmissions were not well regarded and didn't last at all in Australia These were full syncro boxes and were smooth like a car, but Australian truck drivers dont use clutches as only girls dicks use a clutch, anyway this was the weak spot for Volvo, when the clutch was used they lasted a million miles With a 12 speed Mack I clutch some gears in some situations, big loads, hard changes on big hills and so on, theres a huge amount of strain if I mess the change up and clunk it in a bit heavy Some blokes laugh but it's cheaoer than fixing stuff, hence my questions about these boxes as the have some synchros, dunno much about them though Thanks for your replies Joey Paul

So these 18 speeds, do we just slam them thru the gears like a Road Ranger or is clutching required for a long life on some shifts ? I know nothing about these transmissions or gear boxes so before jumping into another stupid project I dont really need or have time for I thought some responsible or perhaps irresponsible research The truck appears original, as in not butchered and hacked up which to me is always a good starting point , once things are fairly buggered with it can become a huge job every step along the way Motors rebuilt 150,000 miles ago and trans 180,000 miles ago, to me thats not a huge concern as the trucks over 20 years old It's 106 tons rating, so almost as tough as my R model and comes in pretty heavy at 11 ton tare Only down side to me is the back end is rockwell, and air bags that I have zero experience with Anyway I will mull it over for a bit Paul

If it was mine, I would free it up and get it working I don't believe you can ever have to much braking Paul

Saw a more modern Mack that caught my interest Has EA 7 E tech motor, Mack 18 speed Probably wont purchase but I spotted it for sale a few weeks ago and it's still rolling about in my head So are these motors any good ? It's 2001 build in Australia, so Im saying it could be as old as 1999 and only fitted to a new truck in 2001 What I mean is, Mack Australia buys, or at least did buy motors trans and major components in bulk lots and fitted them to ne trucks as required I dunno if the 18 speeds are as good as the 12 speeds or the E7 as good as the E6 My reasons for that comment is we dont see as many requests for help for E6 or 12 speed transmissions on here That been said, there wont be as many E6 or 12 speeds in everyday work as E7 and 18 speeds So some thoughts on these motors please Paul

Books are cheap and if you Google them they are readily available, even on the other side of the world were I am They dont have everything in the books but they have almost everything you can think of and lots of leads to finding all sorts of issues A very educational thread going on here Paul

Some years ago I went and became fully licensed to do aircons and it is still a mountain of paperwork but it is worth it to me as I can do it when I want and how I want Well hello Saturday turned into go to work Saturday, major electrical failure last week and the resulting explosion and fire went beyond were I couldn't see or feel 7 hours later things were up and running again and all put back together Sunday morning now and Miss Molly the border Collie and I are about to go for a run, she was pissed at me yesterday, she was so proud of the whole complete dead rabbit she found and was tritt trotting along with a squashed rabbit the size of a dinner plate in her mouth Well we had words and the rabbit got left behind A little while later I noticed she something else in her mouth, a rabbit's head this time, FFS Molly and it stunk "No Darling, the Princess wont be happy if you bring that home" she was giving me the stink eye afterwards but the Princess has standards and they can't be to high as she married me but bringing dead animals and parts of them home isnt allowed 🤔 Have a great Sunday went it gets to your part of the world Paul

I have no idea what vocational schools are, I gather they are like our Tafe (Technical and further education?) schools in Australia Were you go to learn more practical stuff than academic stuff Anyway glad the they are doing well at what ever their chosen path is The personal drive and self reliance we have I'm not sure if it comes naturally or is taught or instilled in us as young people, no matter, it does take us a long way in life and it sounds like the kids have it Well done and enjoy the proud moments as to me it makes it all worthwhile watching or kids develop in to useful members of society Paul

So s ome quick Googling and this is a screen shot and link to a the second page I looked at, you'll get the drift of what Im on about pretty quick https://www.excavator.expert/en/Track-chain-Dozers-JOHN-DEERE-450-26332p.html This gives you all the measurements to check on the chains condition, also note that when you measure "A", multiply it by say 3 or 4 or maybe more and measure the length of 3 or 4 links Stick your hand in the guts of it all and feel the bush, if it is worn only on one side the pins haven't been turned which means that by turning the pins and bushes you can wear the opposite side and get twice the life out of the chains There will be similar diagrams for sprockets and rollers This the only way you can tell the true condition the walking gear Now I don't say any of this so it can be used to screw the seller on the price, just so you have a good idea of what your getting into Good luck with this, anything on steel tracks to me is fun Paul

Those big coil springs on the outside arent track tensioner springs, they are recoil springs So if you hit something hard or something gets in your walking gear it can go around without breaking something Broken recoil springs are fairly common A huge job to repair and you need to know what your doing, people have ended up dead fixing them The most important thing to look at is the walking gear, have pins and bushes been turned, whats the state of rollers and carrier rollers To do up the walking gear costs more than most of these old machines are worth Find out what the measurements are meant to be for the rails etc and take a tape measure out and measure these Unless your really familiar with these machines I would advise not guessing the state of the walking gear I wouldn't trust a mates eye or feel for this stuff, I would actually measure the walking gear Everything else is comparatively cheap compared to this Aside from that it looks like the perfect tool for some land scaping It may take a while to find parts but I doubt they would be to hard to find once your find out were to look, I doubt your local John Deere dealer will be of much help but Google is y our friend with this old gear Paul

I remember some years ago on here a fella rebuilt and rebushed his camel back with neoprene gear Afterwards he noticed the this chirp spund when running empty The neoprene elephant ears and bushes didn't have enough flex to allow the axles to track when cornering They got replaced with normal rubber type and the problem was solved I had a hunt about and turns out Im full of crap Thought the bushes got changed and it fixed the issue Still pretty sure that might be the case and the answer posted in a separate thread, you all know it is highly unlikely for anyone on here to get sidetracked Paul

Mack had a spring setup like this for the steer axle in the early 80's I think the ride is proven to be better and this style of 3 leaves has been Europe for well over 40 years, probably closer to 50 Amd that was used on both drive and steer axles The Mack M ride (rebadged Volvo thingy) is reported to work well and is a parabolic leaf spring setup as well I reckon it would have to ride better, couldn't ride any worse Paul
