We dont call it Veterans day in Australia. We call it remembrance day and the day is like pretty much any other except everthing stops at 11.00am for a minutes silence Apparently every country in the Commonwealth calls it remembrance day and US is the only country that call it veterans day Not matter what we call it we are all in debt to the people that have and still do give up everything to protect us Paul

It's been a while now since I rebuilt mine and I seam to recall now that you mention it that I couldn't get a close enough match with the O rings and they gave me grief so I went genuine, either way you'll probably okay as everything on mine was pretty worn out Paul

Well I'll be buggered, yes I am officially stunned, not really speechless rather just stunned Here was me thinking I was the only truck nut ( other than Ken thomas) that is also a train nut Turns out that Im not the only fruit loop in the world Now that amazing discovery is out of the way, may I just say WOW Thats amazing, amazingly big, amazingly ugly and amazingly beautiful all at the same time, well done to all involved and I'll be watching this space Just did some googling to try and get some perspective on this loco and compare it to something I can relate to Australias largest loco was Heavy Harry or H class Victorian Railway's loco Heavy Harry weight is 264 tons and a tractive effort of 55,000 lbs C&O 1309 weight is 291 tons and a tractive effort of 98,300 lbs Thats quite impressive when I consider it only weighs a extra 30 tons and has probably 40% more power Even more impressed is that both survive and this would never of happened with out the many thousands of hours volunteers donate and their extremely understanding families Well done to you and everyone else involved, you should be very proud of what you have achieved Paul

1986 R Model Mack Referbish
mrsmackpaul replied to BWilson's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
First welcome to the forum I think Joey and Mowerman are pretty much on the money My experience with doors and windows of any brand are fairly limited The R model is more of a head challenge at first than it actually turns out to be Once you have it out on the bench it really is very simple to work on compared to most other doors in cars etc The key barrel has to come out as Joey mentioned and the clip is on the inside rear lip of the door and slides rearwards about a inch, the barrel then pulls out from the outside, the clip then comes out the rest of the way The whole window and inner door skin and regulator comes out as one I think we have covered everything Paul -

mrsmackpaul replied to mrsmackpaul's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
If we are honest, truck drivers today would struggle with anything more than a Roadranger, thats not knocking todays drivers in anyway, it's just industry standard today and even Roadrangers are slowly fading in place of semi automatic and full automatic transmissions Most of us would struggle just driving a T model Ford with it's three pedal transmission, or at least I think thats what it has 😐 😒, dunno as I have never driven a T model so dont know for sure Paul -
So if I'm reading this correctly, this truck is 1987 model and the box mentioned above is very early gear box Would this early gear box even of been available in 1987 ? To me 1987 is just yesterday and yes I do realise it is 34 years ago but very early Maxitorque transmission to me would be early 70's Paul

Dunno, you know as much as I do, but yes has a RoadRanger for sure Most truck drivers even the 80s wouldn't of been to successful driving twin sticks so just to keep it practical and for parts like most Macks the quad box would of been removed Paul -
Do you have all the remnant parts, maybe if you take some photos of the part numbers stamped on them someone on here can find whats going with the original box, as in what it actually is or modified to be if that makes any sense Count up the teeth on the gears and see what they are and then we can work the ratios out from that Paul
-
Okay then Well the maths doesn't match the information, so if it was mine and its not so probably disregard Its time start sorting the fact from the fiction Correct me when Im wrong, you have two transmissions plated the same and looking the same on the out side ? What I would do is try to find out exactly whats going on and take all the guess work out of this The transmission thats out and sitting on the floor I would put it in each gear and count revolutions of the input shaft to do one output shaft turn This will give you a really good indication of whats i your original box The one in the truck is a little trickier, jack up the ass end and with the help of couple of people, one underneath counting the tail shaft and one counting the motor turns on the harmonic balancer and the last joker sitting in the cab turn the key Mark the tail shaft and the balancer with a paint pen and do the same, wind it over until the tail shaft has done on turn and count the revolutions ojf the motor This will give a really good indication of whats going on as all any of us are doing is guessing at the moment Paul
-
Dunno if thats such a big deal, I would be just thankful you could get them, hopefully they are made local but if not and even if its a bit flimsy its a heck of a lot better than a gaping hole surrounded by rust Paul
-
Are you sure your speed is different, as in have you had someone following you down the road or used a GPS The reason I ask is no matter which overdrive Maxitorque Mack made I dont think you will get the speed increase your saying I wonder if the gears that drive the speedo are different as the diff ratios might well be different in the truck you got the gearbox from compared to yours Did you change the speedo gears when you changed the transmission ? B-73 Restoration
mrsmackpaul replied to mattb73lt's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
No backing plates on the brakes, not a big drama as most people chuck them out Looks really impressive Paul -
Assuming its a air ride cab, you can stick a jack and piece if wood etc under the back of the cab and lift it right up to full travel and you may get another couple of inches to work in to access the air lines Paul
-
My 20 cents worth if I may If you dont have a pocket full of coin then just cut out the rust and weld bits snd pieces in here and there Try to do only a patch or two and make the patches a lot bigger the hole your trying to cover Do not over lap stuff to weld it, it might be easier but it will only trap moisture and rust out quicker than before Butt welding with 0.6 mm or 24 guage (according to Mr Google) take your time and you'll be surprised at just how good a job you can do with out spending bugger all Also if your gunna weld, folg the ton foil from the cooks kitchen draw and wrap your airlines as best as you can as these melt thru with splatter from the MIG, quick as look at you Good luck and keep us posted Try a truck wreckers for cuts from a floor to make the patch for yours, gunna get a lot of bits for 2 1/2 grand Paul
