Rather than run the Mack grille thread completely off the tracks . I thought I would start something that Vlad was wondering. And I find very interesting. Vlad had a good point about the differences in the frames between R and RD. We had talked about it before on a different thread, but I couldn't find it. For some reason the search tool doesn't work very good for me. (could be me ) . Anyway , here is what Vlad was wondering on another thread. Also a mystery (I try to be short) is chassis differences between R600 and RD600 frames. They have different rail heigth (the same is between RW600 and RW700) What does that mean? That means that the rail lower edge seats on the front spring brackets . The cab mounts are attached to the rear ones of those. If so the upper edge of the rail must be closer to the cab floor than with narrower rails. But in fact it looks like it doesn't. This means that the sizes are compensated somewhere. That could be done by different brackets which difference you can't see by their look, or by higth of the front axle springs or by any other way. After seeing this I thought It was a very good question. Something has to be different . Fortunately , I'm not very good for much , but taking pictures. So I have some comparisons of R to RD to show how it was done. It appears that all dimensions and frame drilling was done from the top of the frame rails. The extra inch and bit are on the bottom side of the frame. The first pics are the spring hanger bracket on the R600. The second is the spring hanger bracket on the RD600. you can see the top space is the same and bottom space is larger on the RD. The brackets appear to be similar also. They also have the same number 51QKA233A On the back side of the bracket is a shoulder that almost touches the under side of the RD frame rail, but is at least an inch away from the R frame.I think this explains how they accomplished using similar parts on different frames. RD frame R frame I also looked at the rear cab mount. It appears the same . Everything is done from the top of frame . The spacing on the bolts for fuel tank brackets/cab mount bracket was 5 1/2 inches. Same on both trucks. Just bigger space under the bracket on the RD frame. RD frame R Frame

Looks like a nice " home away from home" . Shows what a big province we live in. You still have ice and snow. We are cutting grass and job sites are dusty . The western stars look good.

1974 Mack R-700
85snowdog replied to j hancock's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Not really, lol . The first pics I took didn't have the train. Then the train went by so I figured I would grab some more pics. They generally don't go very fast past my place . So very easy to get pics. -

Thanks for the explanation Whiskymack. It sounds logical to me. To help reinforce what you said, I will add some pics. You can see clearly, the bottom of the rad tank is visible without the grill, and I also added a pic to show how close the grill is to the shutters . Just out of curiosity I measured, and the R700 grill opening is 2.5 inches wider than the R600 opening. I also have a pic of an R600 with rad shutters. You can see that the hood covers the rad tank .

I'm glad I could help I can only speak for myself. But I would love to see any progress you make on your car.

Thanks for sharing story and pics. I think thats really interesting. Unfortunately, I don't have anything with a tip turbine or even access to one. I can only share a parts list from PAI . I'm not sure if this helps you at all. No big loss if it doesn't . It appears your looking for a Mack part # 314GB41C. Hopefully someone corrects me if i'm wrong. A lot of parts that are no longer available at Mack/Volvo are still available at PAI . Good Luck .

The same township that's sitting on that money probably says your triaxle is only worth $52.00/hr for roadwork or hauling snow I'll bet.

Allis Chalmers modern earth moving video
85snowdog replied to 85snowdog's topic in Tractors and Equipment
I love how this stuff can be used for 50 years or more ,and still do the job it was intended for. Definitely built for longevity , and not be replaced every 5 years . -
I came across this interesting video I wanted to share. Its a 1940's dealer movie, that shows modern earth moving methods. Its a great video. I didn't actually know that Allis Chalmers used 2 stroke engines. I am always learning something new. I will add a pic of a very nice HD 6 I was fortunate to see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SVq-rzh9pU

Thats amazing ,that its based on a TD-9. Sure doesn't resemble one . Its James Dick's. Its the machine that's in the very first post. He's a very nice man that likes to see history preserved . He has saved a lot of old iron from being turned into pop cans and razor blades.

With what's going on these days. I've had some extra time for looking at things on the inter web . I've been chatting with others about old tractors and construction equipment. I thought It was interesting that one of my searches led me here. Back to the BMT website. I know this loader. I haven't run it, or even heard it running. I was just fortunate to get a bit of a personal tour form one of the owners employees. Thanks 41 chevy ,for the great run down on it . Its very interesting. Thats me on it, fall of 2013.

That makes so much sense. I can't believe I didn't see it. The marks in it really had me stumped. I never thought of vise grip mount. Thanks so much everyone for your replies. I really appreciate it.

I have been helping a friend out. One of our jobs was changing doors on a Granite dumptruck. My question. The doors we got ,came from the states off an ABF truck. On top of the door ,above the window is a metal bracket with a big round pin. Curiosity has got the best of me. I can't figure what the bracket is. I'm thinking its for a safety harness or something. But don't really know. If anyone could shine a light on it ,I would appreciate it. I've enclosed pics of the bracket . Thanks.

Change Your Air Filter!

Sorry to sideline this a little......... Did you haul wood chips to Domtar in Huntsville. I used to haul sawdust there in the middle, late 90's from manufacturing plants just north of Toronto. I used to take it Brantford for paper too . I seem to remember that alot of the chips came from northern Ontario. I could be wrong though. -
R-model cab resto report
85snowdog replied to Vladislav's topic in Exterior, Cab, Accessories and Detailing
It looks amazing Vlad. I really like how you kept some of the SGT appearance . Just for the simple fact I remember seeing those trucks on the road. They always stood out. We actually called them Slime Green Trucks. So I really like how you changed the color slightly and added metallic . These old trucks all have a story to tell. And by you keeping some of the SGT general appearance , you help keep that part of the story alive. Then with your changes, you just add to the story. You're doing a great job Vlad ! look forward to seeing more progress. There would't be a world tour with it by any chance. -
Yes it was Alex. After living in sanders for 3 winters ,I was able to get a contract for a plow ,and put my own plow on. A 1979 International S series with a DT 466 and a 13 speed.

O the good old days. When you had a simple hydraulic controller to set spinner and conveyor . And your supervisor trusted you to put down the amount of product you thought was appropriate for the conditions.

I didn't mean anything negative about the Fords. Worn out Fords and International were all we could afford. They all ran well ,and never really let us down. This one had a gas engine. I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours in it. It just kept going. It's kind of interesting that around me , even though I live a little over an hour from the Oakville Plant. There wasn't many Macks. Municipalities and fire departments all had Ford or International. With some Dodges in there to. I didn't get my first Mack till 1998. My RD685s. A 13 year old truck cost me almost $30,000. At the same time I could have got a Ford or International for a lot less. Hind sight , It was a good decision to get a Mack. It worked In every Snowstorm for the next 21 years, and never let me down once.
