  1. Speaking of this truck, I have a question about "heavy spec" or "heavy haul" Superliners. I read that this truck has a 20k lb front end and 58k rears. Is that why heavy haul trucks seem to sit a little higher then normal Superliners? Seems like there's more distance between the top of the front tires and the bottom of the front fenders. Do they run taller rubber, too? I really dig the tall look of Superliners like this one and Tackaberrys. And speaking of 58k rear ends, are the pointy hubs an indication of rear end capacity? I seem to only see the point ones on heavy speck trucks. Are the spoke wheels any different? They seem to be taller as well. Can anyone point out other differences between a standard Superliner and a heavy spec one that I might be missing? Could you get a 6 cylinder engine in a heavy haul spec? Or were they all pretty much V8s?
  2. Darn. Guess I'm in the minority that liked it better in the unusual root beer color. Still a good looking truck, though.
  3. But wasn't there a point when Mack went from green metal to redesigned beige interiors across the board?
  4. Can anyone tell me about this truck? Seems like I read online somewhere about the owner finding it and being tempted to paint it.... but deciding not to. Does anyone recall such a thread somewhere? Thanks!
  5. Do you recall what it sold for? Incidentally, when did Mack change from green interiors to beige?
  6. Yep, Hayward truck. Wonder if the owner hangs around here. Did anyone see what type of air suspension it has? Mack didn't offer air suspension in the 60s, did it? Wonder when it was converted. Did anyone catch the specs on the truck?
  7. I've seen a few photos of this truck floating around online. I know it was at the Macungie show recently. I think it's really interesting. In some photos it has NASA on the doors. Is this a legit NASA truck? Would love to see the interior and hear more about it. Anyone know the owner (Ken Ochenkowski of Hartford, CT???)?
  8. Has anyone ever heard any more about the Superliner Registry? Used to see it in Double Clutch magazine, I think.
  9. Yeah, the Omaha threw me at first, too, but I think that's where Proxibid is. I looked up the auction and I believe it took place in New Hampshire.
  10. Sorry, no the name on the door is R.W. Ford. Not a Ford truck, lol. Didn't even think about RW being confusing, too! This truck was sold at auction in 2015 in New Hampshire, I believe.
  11. I just stumbled across this truck today online. Is anyone up in the New England area familiar with it? Anyone know what happened to it? I would love to get some better photos of it if anyone has any. Thanks. http://www.lotnut.com/app/item.html?guid=b676e3f0-4514-43fb-8b81-fc50394ef3c3
  12. Thanks for the comments, guys. I have heard that the trailer makes a big difference. I've never had a camelback truck but I have had Hendricksons and Reycos and they're not the smoothest thing out there, that's for sure.
  13. I guess I'm one of the lucky/unlucky few who grew up driving trucks without air suspension or air-ride cabs. Heck, no p/s or a/c either, for that matter. I've always wondered how big a difference the air-ride cabs make on a Mack. For instance, will an air-ride cab Superliner II be a big improvement over a solid-mount Superliner I cab... assuming both trucks have camelback suspensions? How big a deal is the air-ride cab by itself? Has anyone compared with/without? Then, to take it a step further, how big a difference is an air-ride cab truck with a Neway air-ride rear suspension vs the same truck on camelbacks? Is that like night and day? How about bob tailing? I've always been curious to know if all this air-ride stuff is that big of a deal or not. To be honest, I've never even ridden in an air-ride truck of any sort so I'm completely clueless.
  14. Yeah, I know they had standard stripe patterns but what about other patterns? I know we had a Superliner I back in the late 70s with a different pattern than those. And were there standard colors?
  15. Another question..... Were there standard paint colors for Macks (and Superliners in particular)? Or could they be any color you wanted from the factory? Surely there must've been a standard catalog of colors, right? I presume any colors outside of that list were extra..... as were custom paint schemes. Is this correct?
  16. Thanks for that explanation. I've always seen those differences in the western R model hoods but never knew exactly why they looked different. Makes more sense now.
  17. Ok, how about another stupid question about Western Macks? Why did the "western" trucks have what appear to be larger grilles but with a smaller, reduced-size opening surrounded by the white/silver shroud? Seems like western trucks were meant for big horsepower. Wonder why the entire grill wasn't utilized to cool them. Or am I missing something?
  18. Dumb question.... Could a person swap a white, first-gen Superliner steering wheel onto a second-gen Superliner?
  19. Does anyone know why Hayward didn't make a go of it long term? "Western" Macks are my favorites. Wish they were produced longer.
  20. Ahhh, yes. That image was instantly familiar from my childhood when I read and re-read and re-read all those brochures.... but never really understood how it worked.
  21. Yep, got that brochure, too. Dumb question here.... can you explain the "tip turbine" engine and "radiator mounted charge air cooler" for the ignorant?
  22. These Mack Western brochures are awesome! Did they ever put anything out on the Superliner besides the brochure we all know that was a national release, I believe? This is the only brochure I've ever seen on Superliner I. The only other one I've seen is when Superliner II was introduced. You'd think there would've been something else on the first generation between 78 and 84.
  23. Wonder what the rationale was for the lack of heat shields. Looks cool... till you accidentally lean against it, lol.
  24. Looks like smooth stacks too, Underdog!
