It was definitely an option. In Australia there was a bulletin published by Mack trucks in1985/6 stating that no warranty claims regarding air conditioner performance (or lack of) on MHR models would be paid for if the vehicle was fitted with a back window. With such a big cab, and large windscreen area, the air conditioner was fighting a losing battle without a back window. If they couldve designed a bigger capacity system they would be a perfect cab. I still think they are the best cab over ever made. We had both an MHR and F model and the roof mounted air conditioner on the F model was miles ahead of the ultraliner system. Both great trucks though. Cheers, Skip

Gday everyone. Im just looking for a bit of input from you all on which is the best coolant (if any) to run in an old engine. I know the old Cummins engines always used a Fleetguard water filter with a dosage in it and either water or Fleetguard DCA additive was added to spec. Whats the best to use in an old END864? Ive just got DCA in it at the moment with a WF2074 Fleetguard filter. I would put glycol in it but Im a bit worried about it being too strong for it, and finding its way into the oil or on top of a piston. The engine has been rebuilt completely and the truck has been restored, but it doesnt get driven every day and doesnt work hard too often. If anyones got any advice or helpful hints it'd be great to hear them. Thanks y'all. Cheers, Skip

Get a 7/16" spanner and crack off the tall looking nut with the adjuster screw in it behind the throttle arm, on th back section of the fuel pump. I cant think off the top of my head but I think you turn the adjuster screw clockwise to increase the idle. Then just tighten the lock nut up when you get your desired idle. Cheers, Skip.

"phantom" Rl-700
skip replied to vision386's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Gday everyone. Very interesting reading the posts on this subject, great work. In Australia the R700 came out in late 1970 Im lead to believe. Among the first werew a handful of R715RS'. We never had any variation from the basic model, all had the standard chassis and grille like an F model. Most common engines were the 325 and 375hp V8, a few with the 284hp V8, and a C motor and 237 were the other Mack options. The coolpower became available in the late 70s, and there were a few specially fitted with 14L Cummins and 871V GMs. But as a rule Mack was basically the only engine gearbox and diff option. When did the R700s become available in the USA? They are some pretty flash looking trucks on the front cover of overdrive. Cheers, Skip. -
Gday spud. How old is the superliner? Has it got a gearbox? Fair way to go but soubds like a good buy at that. Skip

Gday. Thanks for the replies. Yep the engine cost a bloody fortune! But in saying that, a rebuild where I used the original camshaft, crankshaft, block and heads and had them serviced, It probably didnt work out too bad. I saved big money on the pump and injectors, as I found a reconditioned set for quite cheap, and it doesnt have a turbo. I would hate to be doing the same sort of rebuild on an E9, it would hurt the hip pocket a lot more. Before I found out the history of the truck I was going to paint it black and line and scroll it with green and white, similar to the old Sydney-Mt Isa transport colour scheme.(An old Australian Company for those of you living elsewhere) Then I found some info out on it and it turns out there were only 25 of this model made, some with steel fronts and some with fibreglass bonnets. So I did a bit more searching, found the original owners and from then on it was only ever going to be red on a black chassis. The only changes I wil make are a white tin sunvisor, a chrome strap on the fuel tank and a V8 badge on each side ot the bonnet. The colour of the engine came from a promotional brochure of the END864 titled 'Diesel of the Decade' It was for Macks new 255hp V8 released in 1962. Although these R615RS' came out with the END864A or C rated at 284hp I still liked the colour of the engine in that brochure and because it is the thing that makes the truck unique thats what colour it ended up. I also painted the quad box in the same blue/green colour. I will get some more photos up soon. Cheers everyone, Skip

Thanks for the comments. As it is a rare truck with the V8 I just worked on getting it as close to original as I possibly could. The engine was the hardest and most expensive part of the project. I collected parts for close to 4 years. I found a rebuild kit for it, a recoditioned rotary fuel pump, Rebuilt the oil pump, compressor and P/S pump. The crand was ground and the cam was dressed, new bearings right throughout. The block was cracked around the counterbores so they were machined out and inserts pressed in. All the heads were completely rebuilt. Very major overhaul! It might be the only rebuilt END864 in Australia though. The next engine is going to be difficult to do up, the parts supply is running low!

Heres another shot of it, fresh out of the paint shop. The motor was completely rebuilt, and fitted with the gearbox before the cab was bolted on.

Gday everyone. I thought I'd just bringup a couple of photos of my R615RS. About 12 months ago I said I would post a few photos of my project, well better late than never! Hope you enjoy them. They might be spread over a couple of different posts. Cheers, Skip. This photo was taken when it was finished abd detailed the day before it went to Alice Springs for the truck show

Steel Front R600S
skip replied to skip's topic in Antique and Classic Mack Trucks General Discussion
Gday all, heres another picture of the 2 Flinstones. The red one is mine and the yellow one belongs to Dick Beckett from Tasmania. Mine is a 1967 and his is a 1970. The chequerplate on the fenders was a popular addition, but probably didnt become popular until 1968-9. The yellow banger has a 237hp 6cyl and mine has the 284hp V8. -
Just a couple of R600s for you all. R615RS and an R685RS. Was taken at Alice Springs in August 2010. Will upload some more soon. Cheers, Skip

Dont throw the 866 away mate, if looked after it will be a good engine for you. dont let it lug, dont over rev it and keep the heads pulled down tight. They are hard to get bits for but theres a few old ones about if youre looking. Funny about the push rod, I bought a new one for an 864 a couple of yearrs back, not sure if it is the same as an 866 though. Keep the dream alive mate, good work. Keep us posted next time shes on the dyno. Spud, whats the go with that E9? That seemslike pretty good money to me, where is it located? And dou you know much history on it?

gday mate hows it all going? has your truck got a pyro fitted? If not try an infared ray gun and check your exhaust manifold for temperature. If its getting fairly hot under load then you have an air restriction or lack of boost. -Providing your fuel pressurs is right. Has it got any sort of puff limiter fitted? And of course make sure you are getting full throttle on the pump, and make sure your stopper lever isnt partly holding the rack. They are some easy checks mate, and it sounds like you are giving it a pretty good going over. Dirty or damaged injector nozzles will also drop your power but doesnt really explain a lack of boost. Im not sure if you had them serviced when you were doing the engine up. And obviously make sure of your timing, did you spill time it? Im interested to know how you're travelling, keep me updated. Cheers, Skip

I got the big banger going. I removed the cover on the governor housing and the cover plate directly in front of the governor. I found the LHS rack was stuck.I removed the dynatard solenoid from the front of the rack. Then I got a small hammer and tapped the rack back to the no fuel position, thenpryed it foward with a scrwedriver and used a bit of CRC to free it up. After about 5 minutes of mucking around it freed up. Then i put all the covers back on and it started up first go, and didnt rev to full noise. Great Success!!

Gday everyone. Weve just got a cousins ENDT866 going after nearly 10 years out of service. it fired up after a bit of bleeding but as soon as it kicked into life away it went. I stopped it withh a block of wood over the intake. Im guessing the governor is stuck. Any ideas on freeing it up or what else it could be? Any info would be great thanks. Skip

Gday mate how ya goin? 10 grand for a 440 and 12spd? Skip

Gday mate hows it goin? What year model truck are you doing up? What air system is it going to have? By the sound of it you are gunna have a dual system. On the R and F models of around that time they had a really good diagram on the inside of the passenger side door, and it gives you a pretty good idea of where each line hooks into each valve. Ill have a look at the one Ive got.
-
Gday mate how are ya? Nah this V8 Flinstone Ive done spent its first 25 years or so in Tassie, Then a bloke from Wollongong bought it and partly restored it and was using it as a yard truck until a the V8 died. The other one Ive got was sold new to a couple of sawmillers in Bulladelah and that had a longer chassis by the look of the photo the original ownerw gave me. It spent 20 years there and it stayed between there and Sydney up until about 2004. Who were Reynolds mate? They loggers as well?
-
Ive got an original photo of my other flinstone, it was a logger and I reckon it has a extended chassis and mightve had the pintle hook youre talking about. Im pretty sure this truck pictured had a turntable from new
-
Gday mate how are ya? Yep youre on the money there, it was originally a jinker. And there were only 3 V8 Flinstones in Tassie that I know of, Mt Foster which is the one I have, Shaws and Bonnys. There may have been one other but its hard to find out. What have you got up there? Are you heading to Alice Springs in August?
-
Gday mate how are ya? Its from Tassie so I would think Hobart because it has a big dock area for freight ships. It spent its first 25 years or so in Tassie. It has certainly been worked well, and I dont think it wouldve carted too many legal loads. Its great to have it going again, its starting to look alright and hopefully it will create a bit of interest up at Alice Springs for the big reunion. Are you going? Or do you know any blokes from the west that are heading across?

Gday everyone how are we? I just got my R615 V8 flinstone goin today. It hasnt turned a wheel for around 15 years and although its not quite complete we took it for a run down the road. What a champion of a thing! Its got the END864A engine, TRQ722O quad box and 44000" pound diffs at 8.24-1 ratio. Very slow! My speedo isnt working yet, does anyone know what speed i will get with that running gear? Ive included a photo of her back in its hey day. Will post more soon, Skip.

Gday. Thanks for the replies everyone, that picture is similar to what I had in mind. Ive got an old F model here with one on it but its damaged. Its a Bendix Westinghouse I think, with some black and some red text. Unfortunately there is no part number on it. I might have to go for that midland style.

Gday everyone how are we? Ive recently plumbed up my R615 from the ground up. Its not quite the same as original, it came out with a single air tank for service applications and it had a cable operated hand brake. Ive put an extra air tank on for the emergency release system controled by a PP1 valve. Does anyone know if you can get hold of the name plate that fits under the nut on that valve? It goes through the procedure for the emergency release application. Ive also plumbed in a limiting QR1 valve for the steer axle, controled by a TW1 valve(same as a diff lock switch). Does anyone know if you can get hold of the 'Dry Road/Slippery Road name plate for the top of that valve. I know these are ridiculous requests, but I just want it to look close to original inside. Any help or info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone, Skip
