  1. Big over gears ain't the answer. .74 is common in transmissions now. still need at least a 3.90 or 3.70 axle to cruise 70 and get the RPMs down. They gear them faster than that, but they don't spend much time in that overgear in a bulk operation. Especially in North East Pa.
  2. Thing now in the dump trucks, all the newer engines get their best mileage at a low RPM. Only way to cruise low RPM is a fast axle. Then when you get it in something soft.... you're screwed. I don't care how low the transmission is geared. It's the axle that gets it through that stuff. All these new engines have crazy off idle torque too (even feathering the throttle) IDK, they make perfect sense to me. To each their own I guess. I'm not moving huge weight, but they have purpose in my application too as far as I can see.
  3. Somehow ????? Peterbilt made it. Even though the salesman said not to (lol) 463s works like a charm as far as I'm concerned. (IDK how ???? it ever made it past engineering) 🤣
  4. IDK E Tech was a fantastic engine. 460 compared to a 475 Cat ? Uhhh NO. none the less plenty of power and a long life to overhaul if taken care of. 460 AMI ? not so much.
  5. I can tell you that 4 years ago if you went to a Peterbilt dealer and told them you wanted 2 speed rears , you were told you were nuts , or "nobody uses them". Then afterwards every single thing that's wrong with the truck ? It's because of those 2 speed rears. 😂 Maybe it's just me
  6. Exactly. That's apt to have 20000 hours on it. If it's anything over ten thousand ? Probably more copper than babbit showing on the bearings and wrist pins. AMIs were someone's idea of a good bandaid , and they were junk. Now 20 years after the fact ? I don't think this is a good choice for this man. Too much exposure to high cost repairs.
  7. That's another thing that makes me wonder. That's alow mileage chassis. Really shouldn't need a transmission yet. Unless ??? it's had a lifetime of a frustrateed driver (s) trying to get that POS AMI moving. or something like that. Man also asked if the truck was good idea as a foray into self employment. Tranny is the least of his worries with that one. Even a knowledgeable guy with an equipped shop and a swollew bank account'd have trouble keeping that truck going to be dependable in 2025. Also like Geoff pointed out, stuff you don't think of. Hole in the top cover, PTO(s) alterations to the driveline. Just the transmission swap could blossom into a five digit figure in the blink of an eye.
  8. You are correct Jojo, just more the reason this dude needs to run the other direction. He has no idea what he's getting into there. I'd rather be called a d!ck for posting this than see the guy go broke with that truck.
  9. That's a CV ain't no MP7 in that one. AMI on a vac truck ? I foresee a hole in the side of the block where a wristpin gave up. Personally, I don't think this is a good choice for a man depending on an income...Fuller, Mack or any transmission
  10. I can almost picture a B Model book I have with those pictures. It was a two volume book with lots of pictures. I'll look and see if I can find it.
  11. Trucks like that ? Usually the decision to buy is driven by emotion. So there's no telling what someone is willing to pay for it. ( and sometimes the seller is driven by the same thing ) It's a fickle market. Hard item to attach a price to.
  12. Boy, that's a hard thing to put a number on. If it still looks like in the pictures? it'll have value to someone. Gonna have to advertise it.
  13. You would look good in there too.
  14. I'm not too worried, guy I work for hasn't asked in over 30 years. I think I'll be ok 🤞
  15. Then on the other end of the spectrum, there's good mothers like mayor pete reading stories like ( my two dad's ) to kids. Boy this thread has really made some of us think.
  16. Funny thing, I went home and found that book in minutes. I couldn't tell you where or even if I have a high school diploma.
  17. That's the one .
  18. I have a book by that Zaffo guy. The artwork can't be fully appreciated by a kid. Mine has trucks and one is a Gerosa Autocar. I had no idea what that stuff was when I got that book.
  19. Truck parts are nuts any more. Couple weeks ago, I had to pay $2300.00 for an exhaust pipe. Nothing surprises me.
  20. In 2024 ? that price isn't shocking in the least. Cam followers H clips gaskets. Wonder if that's with followers for the unit pumps too.
  21. When the injector was out of it, are you sure it didn't end up with 2 washers down by the tip ?
  22. Either that, or the cat is thinking " then this clown wonders why I pee in his laundry basket when he's not looking "
  23. My first driving job, the B Model had one of those. I actually haven't seen one in a truck since.
  24. Aren't they the indicator lights ? the buttons on the end are right or left and if I remember the one on the top is the four ways.
  25. 🤔 I wonder if a spare Mech is gonna show up in a crate on Amazon or FB marketplace
