  1. question............ on the western R models shown some have the dip in the bumper for the radiator and then a few had the rectangle holes in the bumper instead. which came first? and did the lower part of the grill not tilt with the hood on the ones with the bumper cut out?
  2. thanks taking the time for all of us to enjoy! That was in the day when I would sit for hours along the highways just to see the many cool trucks that were all so unique. And when I was old enough to drive I would cruise the truck stops to enjoy the many different rigs. Not the same anymore!
  3. Mike tubeless original 5 hand hole would be 22.5's? But those sure fit the wheel wells like 24's?

  6. Hey, guys I bought it! I was concerned too about the seller but after talking to him I was totally okay with it. The truck is not that far from me either and the interior is like new!! Anytime I see a Mack V8 and that kinda $$ is it worth it just for the parts. The story is one of those someone owed somebody and then the guy disappeared and it was abandoned. fortunately the original owner still had the title and the seller was able to track it down. I have to say that I usually pay too much for a truck but not on this one. Should have it home next week.
  7. okay here is the update after working with Don at the museum. I believe the 30 something number comes from the 864 turbo'd that were NOT the standard 300HP. There were over 600 of the 300HP version. I was suprised some went up to 350HP Mack V8 Diesel Engines.doc Copy of ENGINE GROUPS.pdf

  9. when I was at the Peterbilt factory this past fall they gave a demo of the robots assembling the new cab. Yet 8 of 10 new Petes ordered were still the old rivet cab. So why push a new cab on the same folks that are happy with the old one? The factory guys were very vocal in their disapproval of the new cab and enjoyed pointing out the amount of maintenance workers trying to keep the damn robots up and running.

  13. Wow.......memories. Driving down the hwy in WA and did a u turn after seeing Bob Brown's yard. I sat in that W model about 86... that truck later ended up at the Golden Age museum and was not restored at that time. No idea where it is now. The golden cut off W was in Idaho and during the time i was restoring the Green W in the pictures........yes, it was the one that Dr Bill had on his trailer, anyways I needed a grill so I had a driver that was near with an empty drop deck swing by the yard it was in. They guy wanted $7,500.00 bucks! and it had no engine or tranny and was cut off behind the cab. So I told my guy to offer $1,500.00(that was nuts but we were there and I needed the shutter assembly) and the owner came back with " The hell with that, I will just weld a frame with a set or rears on it and make a truck out of it again"!!............... The Pic of the PA W is really cool!! neat to see and the double king pin trailer was also neat.
  14. Here are a few pics of the 2 Superliners I picked up in Wisconsin. Superdog Mike led me to them. The 88 has a Trevitz assisted rebuild and is putting out big horses. the 85 also was tinkered with some but still has the v pump. With the bad weather the trucks have been at the Mack dealer in Madison and they have gone through them to take care of little odds and ends. Not sure what I think about the exhaust setup yet but I will give it a try. I am excited to get them home soon.
  15. W Model History.pdf I was given this history of my W model from Jim Rowe of Idaho. Jim's family owned a large livestock trailer business and for years he kept track of alot of the trucks. Neat to have guys like Jim!

  19. My Dad bought a 4 yr old H model and a 2 axle 32ft Fruehauf for 7,500.00 in 61. He took the trailer down and had a third axle added and started hauling steel for Tryon. As a little guy I remember Mom taking down a week's check for over a grand. I remember the steel strikes too and it was either 69 or 70 he had all of his tires slashed at the Beaver Valley truck stop with a load of coils on it

  21. A local lumber mill bought the truck new and ran it for many years around the area. It had a reputation for being a real powerhouse against other trucks. I picked it up used and never had it in commercial use. I believe it was rated at 450hp and I was told it had the smaller head bolts? evidently they changed the head bolts in later years perhaps with the KTA?
  22. My first truck had a 13spd with a 4spd progressive brownie. I pulled into my friends yard and one of his drivers came out looked it over, and said that was an awful heavy carrier bearing under there.
