I have 3 B755 and all were repowered with Cummins in line 6's. The old 864's gave some folks fits and it was very common out west to simply replace them with a Cummins. The 70 series accomodated the Cummins quite easily. For show though I like having the V8 power back in them. Not a bad price if the cab is not rusted out. And like one ol driver told me. the 3 sticks were sure handy and gave you that 150rpm split to get around your buddy on a long pull..............but you could forget where you were sometimes and have to start all over again.

The old timers I know like to call them.................shake and shake!

There was also some axle back F models. I wondered why they did not push them along with the raised roof to compete with the IH and FL that Hunt and Schneider ran.

Ben was a big name with Mack in many of my old Bulldog magazines from the 60's. He has been around a long time. We have had a job in Hobbs, NM and they took care of a few issues with our Mack when our driver was delivering.

The Mack Jr's and as well as the same REO's were continental engines. REO had Silver Nickel cast into the blocks but they were Continentals. when i restored the Mack Jr in 95 I went to Napa and got a complete rebuild kit as the same engines were used for years in forklifts.

Ross Island Ready Mix in Portland Oregon still runs mixer trailers with slide axles to meet the bridge laws. when they get on the job site they slide them forward. They still use the last of the RD Macks with them.

Did all of the AC models come with the hood that has the lid on top? someone described that as the California option once? Nice find Mike and keep looking for a Superliner for me!!

what became of Highpoint? He used to advertise a lot on ebay. I purchased a DM800 from him and it was not a good experience!! But my fault so I just moved on.

Mack V8 Diesel Engines.dochere is where I get my V8 stats. It came from Don at Mack Museum. Does seem to low on the ENDT864?

Here is an ENDT-864. According to Mack only 34 were built and ranged up to 350hp. I found many of the parts I needed from Chalmers in PA. I am waiting on the turbos to be rebuilt and that has been a real slow deal. They are garrett but Mack customized the fans. Finally found a guy who had parts and knew about them......after all of these years!!! But he is up in age and you dont trot them old horses. So here I sit waiting.

is there any truth to the tell that the last E-9's were slightly over 1000 cubes?

Allan Nelson of Healdsburg,CA has an E-9 in a late 70's R that originally had an 866 in it and has been running for quite some time. He just gave me the cab off of it for my project. He recently retired it from daily work and is now adapting an L cab with the LT hood and fenders on it. He plans to have it done for Yakima ATHS national show.

There seems to be little interest in corporate identity anymore.

I have read your past posts and can agree with you on many of the points. But what did we really expect when Mack was sold to Volvo? Has Volvo taken some of what Mack had to offer in engineering and people and incorporated that into the product lines? I was impressed with the investement that Volvo put into the Mack customer center and I believe Volvo management does appreciate the history of the Mack company and means to preserve it. Our country has changed alot over the years in how we view foreign investment. There was a time Chrysler was wanting to buy Mack and that got shutdown by the FTC and that would never be an issue today. As for Zenon Hansen there is no doubt he was a great leader and visionary. But the maxidyne concept was underway when he arrived and with his leadership it went into production. Zenon was also a great salesman and that goes along way in promoting a product and especially a product that performed as the Mack line did at that time. But what has deregulation done to the manufacturer's? For Mack it had to have an effect as many of the concentrated unionized truck lines were on the east coast. These were second and third generation ran companies that grew up with the bulldog and had loyalty. The improvement of the components from all of the vendors has certainly contributed to a more homogenized product out there and it is now more sales and dealer involvement that makes a difference. You can read Montville's book Mack and then take it from that time foward and see that Mack was always on a roller coaster ride financially. Big investments led to a new product that later aged and profits would fall until they ramped up again and so on. That is why Signal invested in Mack and once they saw the end of the line they bailed. I recently purchased a new Mack and would do so again as it has treated us well, the dealer is solid, and it performs. I still see alot of "real" trucks such as dumps, logging, refuse, etc that run Mack rears and the camelback suspension with a bronze bushing. It is still a valid suspension for the right reasons.

I see most of Harry's collection ended up there. Harry sure flamed out on the hobby? I wonder what happened as he was doing some really nice restorations.

I have had a few late model Macks and not a problem with any of them. Had a 94 CH with 1.2M miles on it. sold to a guy who is still running it!!!

only comment I have is that .............Freightliners are not German...............they are Mexican...............most are built in Mexico as they closed the Portland Oregon line except for government contracts and now the Western Star. Shameful to see Mexican built trucks hauling our freight!!! Even more shameful is the American people who buy the damn things.
