Two places that are good on older carbs are Treadwells in NY and Carolina Carb. in Wilmington NC http://www.mycarburetordoctor.com/ I'm a bit confused (yeah I know Randy what else is new) is it an ex- fire truck? if so it should have dual ignitions with one magneto and one distributor. it is pretty rare for both to quit at the same time. As for the clutch the thing that jumps out at me is that the pressure plate or flywheel is warped, or you have a broken spring on the pressure plate. Best thing to do is to pull it and have it re-built.

  6. I find there is a lot of "penis envy" in some departments; all they care about is having a bigger, flashier, etc. rig than their neighbors; cost and utility be damned. I am not a fan of mini-pumpers, but in this case it might make sense to have one equipped with a plow to clear the road for a larger rig. Combine that with on-spot chains on the big rig and you should be able to go where you need to. And push comes to shove the mini-pumper can always drag a supply line up a driveway through the snow to serve as an attack piece.

  10. No, I ran across a guy at a show who worked on air wipers out of his house/personal shop. He did a set for a friend of mines C cab Ford that he had previously been told were not repairable and were NLA.
  11. I agree, but probably a lot safer than the rigs with an extended bumper that are set up for a member to stand on the bumper while operating a hand line. I also wondered about carrying a spare tire. Doesn't seem to practical unless you are out in the puckerbrush somewhere and need it to get home.
  12. There are folks oit there who rebuild/repair air powered windshield wiper motors. I had a link to one, but I cannot find it now. Let me know if you need it and I may be able to chase it down.
  13. Here is a White/Van Pelt from the Frankenmuth, MI SPAAMFAA show in 2012. I love the front fender mount seats used for grass fires.

  18. Check with Soda Blasting of VA. They are out of Louisa and they specialize in coming to you to do the job. Despite the name they will use any media you want to do the job.

  20. Since modern fire and EMS units have the same types of parasitic losses that plague all modern stuff they all use some type of on-board charging system that is plugged into "shore" power when they are in quarters. The really neat feature about most of these plugs is a built in solenoid that "kicks" the cord out of the socket when the truck is started if the driver fails to unplug it before trying to leave quarters. (We always left the cord looped around the steering wheel or driver's door handle to help prevent that little boo-boo.) Most older stuff, 1940's and 50's, also used a rectifier based system to keep the batteries charged while in quarters. Perhaps you have noticed an odd shaped electrical outlet on older trucks that typically has two horizontal slots in lieu of the standard vertical slots for a plug to fit into. That was the standard plug for an on-board charger at the time.
  21. If all else fails you can ask the museum for a shop drawing of the part you are looking to re-create. It might take a little while, but you will have an exact plan to work from.
