  1. I think there is a special place in hell for all of us that are trying to chase down unknown shakes and rattles. At the Spring Melt I had the chance to ask Cal Little about the drive line noise I have in the 52. He went through the usual litany of rear differential (already rebuilt), transfer case (ditto), driveshaft, etc. When I told him why I had ruled out all those he just said what we all know "Strange noises and shakes can really be tough to find and sometimes you never do find 'em." I hope you figure it out.
  2. So now you figured out how to use the computer and why you had kids; a real win-win. See you in Macungie.
  3. Pretty much whatever you are comfortable with. I gave them a couple of hundred bucks because I consider them to be irreplacable and we should do what we can to make sure they stay around.
  4. Buckeye Iron & Brass Works, Dayton, Ohio
  5. If all else fails write to the Mack Museum and ask for the shop drawings of the parts you need to duplicate. If they come through, and they most likely will, send them a donation.
  6. That is one of the lights that were at the spring melt. Nice light, good price. It is a "fast" spinner, but that can be corrected by reversing the internal gear. Check out my post about getting my truck back from the gold leafer. The light on top behind the driver's seat is a Buckeye Roto-Ray. Buckeye refers to the manufacturer as opposed to the modern Roto-Rays made by Richard Slepetz in Herndon, VA.
  7. You will find them on Ebay every great once in a while. I know where one is for sale right now, but it is in the $1000.00 range. Interested? If not your best bet is to go to a fire oriented flea market such as the spring melt in Allentown or the annual SPAAMFAA meet being held in Frankenmuth, MI this July. There were three or four at the spring melt this year.
  8. Come on down for Saturday just to see the trucks. It's only a couple of easy interstate hours from you. If you haven't been before you will be blown away by the number, variety, and quality of the trucks that show up.
  9. Vinny, When you get your ticket the first thing you need to do after the first snow is go to a big empty parking lot and make whatever you are driving spin in every direction you can until you learn how to make it stop. I did this and I did it with my kids when they started driving. Makes you a much better driver. And it sure is fun!
  10. Doug, Have they come up with a place to park the trailers yet? Carl
  11. I'll be at Macungie with the 52. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.
  12. Denny, I am far from a tech guru. I'd try posting on the "site related" section or maybe ask on an Apple user's group. Carl
  13. Put the pump on the Mack you just bought and sell this to a local woodchuck that wants to trim trees.
  14. Keep your eye on EBay. I scored a brand new six foot "County Line" (Tractor Supply house brand) for $1100.00 last year from a guy in MD who buys out places that are going out of business. He had it for $1400.00 or offer. I put an offer of $1100.00 in thinking I would never get it at that price; when it came right back that I had bought it I had to think quick about how I was going to tell the DW. Not as HD as Deere, but I can wear it out twice for the price of one JD.
  15. Thanks. I wish I had the means to do a total restore, but it's just not in the cards. Plus it is really hard to justify doing that to a truck that is not that unique. To post pics go to "more reply options" in lower right of "reply to this topic" at the bottom of this screen you will find a section labeled "attach files" click on the "browse" command to find the location of the picture you wish to post on your computer. Once the picture is "found" you than click on the "attach this file" at the very bottom of the page. The picture will load with a "add to post" or "delete" next to it. If you wish to post the picture click on "add to post". When you have added the pictures you wish to post click on "preview post" to make sure the pics will appear as you want them to. When you are satisfied with the results click "add reply"
  16. Great, I hope it works out. That one belongs in the Mack museum since it is the last custom fire chassis Mack made and there probably will never be another.
  17. Get well soon and since humor is the best medicine I hope you can keep reading Rob's missives and what we have to say about them. Our prayers are with you.
  18. Good thing I didn't know about this since the only thing that keeps me from popping a couple of the geese that keep pooping all over the yard is they are such a PIA to pluck. I can't bring myself to waste them by just killing them and throwing them out.
  19. Harvey Eckart has a nice book out about all of the "last one made" Mack fire trucks. I'm sure you could find it on-line. Is the truck you are working on the last totally Mack made CF or the last CF from Yonkers?
  20. Truck is 12,500 and the trailer GVW is 16,500, so it's close. They are 17.5 inch lowboy style tires and the brakes are larger as well. The truck pulls it remarkably well and the combination of the exhaust brake and Allison tranny makes it one of the easiest trailers I have ever towed to stop.
  21. First rule in firefighting is to protect the exposures. Good job!
  22. Yep, it is pretty amazing how fast it turns rural around DC, even now. Virginia is a very pretty state when you get away from NOVA and the other urban areas. I have the perfect dalmation; a stuffed toy that never barks, whines or poops on the rug! Thanks for the compliments. I'm really excited to finally get it done. One more thing off the list!
  23. I finally found someone to convert the lettering on the 52 from the volunteer FD that had the piece back to the original Richmond, VA scheme. It is not exactly the same as the factory photos, but it is close. Originally the piece did not have "Richmond" lettered on it anywhere. When the Hardy VFC had it done they added a couple of maltese crosses with their name in them, so I had the Hardy changed to Richmond. I sanded and re-painted the hood's top panel which removed the Hardy Vol. Fire Co. The gold leafer replaced that with the original "Bureau of Fire" that Richmond used on their rigs. The pictures also show the soft sleeve holder that I fabricated to replace the original that came up missing. Thanks to the Mack Museum for sending me the original shop drawings of the holder. Without them it would have been tough to re-create the original dimensions and look. I'm real pleased with the results. Now to get it ready for the Apple Blossom Parade this Friday in Winchester, VA.
