yes, the 4 wire separates the ground from neutral. which then get reconnected in the power panel. the big unit is hooked directly to the house with an automatic transfer switch. before that i used to connect the "portable" sets through the mig welder plug in the garage. turn main breaker off, connect generator, then fire it up. once street power came back on i would shut generator off, unplug it, and then turn main back on. this setup is not legal, but safe if done correctly.

when figuring out what size generator you need, you have to look at use. is the house all electric, or all gas? a gas oven/cooktop, furnace, water heater, and clothes drier you could get away with a 10 KW set. for a house with electric oven/cooktop, electric hot water heater, and electric heat, you will want a larger unit, in the 15+ KW range. i went with the 17.5 KW unit because of the 50 amp plasma cutter, 5 HP 240 air compressor, and Lincoln 215 power mig in the shop. the house itself is all gas appliances, so only electric use is AC, fridge, freezer, computer and lights. i have run the house in winter off a 5 KW set. but for summer use with AC i would want at least 10 KW.

i used to have a hitch mount carrier. my old scooter would come apart into 5 pieces, none heavier than 50 pounds... and that was the battery pack. took about two minutes to take apart, and about 5 to put together. the new one is one piece, but i have the 16 foot enclosed trailer to just drive it in. the old one had top speed of 7 MPH, with rheostat speed control. so it would do any speed you want. the new one is computerized. and has two speed settings. low and high. low is 7 mph, high is 14 mph. and let me tell ya, 14 does not sound fast until you are sitting in the open 18 inches off the ground on three wheels.

my 17.5KW is a RDJF, the king of the Onan diesels. it came from North Bergen DPW. it was the backup power plant for the high pressure sewer pump . never used for anything but run time once a month for 5 minutes a month, for 40 years. power went out ONCE in the 40 years it was in service, and it ran for 2 hours. the other 4 hours were put on it by the guy i got it from. he bought it from the town to use in an automotive shop he was starting. was there 6 months when the building owner sold it and the new owner kicked him out. the new building he found already had a generator, so he no longer needed this one

look for an older Onan or Kohler made in the 80's. on craigs list and facebook marketplace. people are replacing them with generjunks and selling for next to nothing. the 1800RPM water cooled units are quietest. then the 1800 RPM air cooled units. 3600 RPM air cooled units (which 90% or the new ones are) will wake the dead 1/2 mile away while running. i picked up a 15 KW onan air cooled propane/natural gas unit with 427 hours on it for $971 4 years ago. and last year picked up a 17.5 KW water cooled diesel with 46 hours on it AND a brand new 80 gallon tank under it for $1500 delivered. these units have a life expectancy of over 3,000 hours. but the powers that be are letting slick salesmen talk them into getting rid of perfectly good gensets and replacing them with 6to 10 grand garbage units that may lasy 500 hours....if they re lucky.

nice!!! i think that is the first SINGLE AXLE superdog i have ever seen! -
never had the opportunity to run a wet clutch in a truck.... but in farm tractors they made life very pleasurable.

the cat trucks had A LOT of issues. mostly electrical. very few left.

yup. when i got my first paying job they put me in an ols wore out tired B-815 with quad box( cause i knew how to drive it) .three weeks later they sold that truck and put me in a brand new 85DM 800 with 237 and a mud stick trans. i thought i was hot snot, as it was the fastest truck in the yard. then in 88 i got a R model with a 350 4 valve and was in heaven.

my first ride was a 49 L190 single axle tractor with the 501 red diamond and quad box.

the ultrashift is an ok trans...but no good for trailer work. it has a semiautomatic clutch in it. when you step on the brake it disengages the clutch. stepping on throttle engages the clutch. so when you are trying to spot a trailer using both brake and throttle it very quickly tears the clutch out of the truck. my friend had 4 of them.. for 3 years. and put 4 clutches in each before getting rid of them the allison is a true automatic trans.

yup, the X15 is the hot ticket. with an 18 speed you can get up to 600HP. with the 4500 RSD Allison you are limited to 565 HP. which is plenty. at 80,000 pounds with 4.56 gears it will walk away from most loaded trucks. i have had a few 120k+ loads and still pulled large bridges gaining speed. empty i am faster off the line than most cars if i want to be. we have one quarry where the cars all line up left lane to cross the highway, then 200yards up the road try to make a right hand turn across 4 lanes from the left lane. we have gotten wise to them and leave them hanging in the left lane sitting there with their blinkers on until all the trucks go past. then the local cops pull them over and give them obstructing traffic tickets. if i hammer head the dump, i can go as low as 3 mpg. if i drive sanely i can get as high as 9 mpg on the highway loaded.
