  1. Thanks again and photos are great. is the difference between a fa601 and a fa600 just the drilling for different spring spacing or is there more to it? The reason i ask is that axle seems to be much more common on the 81( i may even know where i can get one ,although i'am afraid it may have been scrapped). I haven't made up my mind about how stock i want to keep the truck. my problem is that the truck is jersey specd ( for 70,000) and weighs 4000 more than my 227" wheelbase rd triaxle; However,i live in Pa and am limited to 58,000 in a ten wheeler which leaves me with a pathetic 9 ton payload. Here is my dilemma i need the truck to work as well as look good. It shouldn't be that hard to move the trunion back to give me a 227" wheelbase and i could have another 17.5 ft. bodied triaxle, but then i would be destroying the classic look of the truck and great offroad abilities of the ten wheeler. I would really like to just keep it as it is but it kind of burns me up to be paying registration ($1251) for 73,280 anyway ( because of the tag trailer with the 955 on it) and only be able to legally put nine tons in it when i'am using it as just a dump truck. I've got the whole thing stripped to the bare cab and am doing the body work so i better make my mind up soon. I'll try and figure out how toget some pictures up here. Thanks again
  2. Thanks fo your quick reply. I only have a fa522( other # 1qha4143cp17 ) in the truck now. I suppose i was asking if the fa601 will handle the weight or if there is something better ( if i'am going to have to upgrade anyway). The "b81 axle" i was referring to is the one that looks pretty beefy and has an upside down arch sort of shape to it. I never looked at the numbers on one. is that what the 601 looks like?
  3. I checked the wiki and it appears 16,000 was the max for the b61. i would like to have at least an 18,000. I measured against my rd and cl and they are too wide will an axle from a b81 fit ( maybee with some drilling for the different spring spacing i don't know). I don't think getting springs that will handle the weight ( around 20k) should be too hard. Perhaps i'am worrying about nothing heck the thing is 46 yrs old and hasn't broken yet, but that axle sure looks thin when i park my rd (with 18k front axle) next to it.
  4. Suppose you were starting with a bare block how would you go about building max reliable horsepower from a mechanical e7? The reason i ask is i want to build a replacement engine for my truck and i was thinking the stock 400 would be good starting point but i'am really shooting for around 500 hp if it can be kept reliable. Right now i'am looking to gather info on which parts to use and where to have pump work done. Thanks for any help you can provide
  5. Here's an update. i went to a different dealer and bought the original fan clutch that came on my truck from new. It works much better. and only cost 3 dollars more than the horton one my local dealer sold me.
  6. I have a 96 rd with a fram filter housing and i have noticed that other rd's have a larger donaldson filter housing. is this just a differnce in years or a difference in the size of the engine. which filter has the best capacity ? also that little restriction gauge on the side of the filter housing never moves. i thought it was broken so i took it off and put vacuum to it and it moves:although i'am unsure as to what specific level of vacuum indicates its time to change the filter. i just change the filter every 600 hrs. Is this ok?
  7. Thanks for the replies. how do know what bogie setup you have? I'll have to count and measure my springs.
  8. I got the numbers off the rears in my b they are 11kha5113p6 crdp112-13-h-95 and the ratio is 8.24. do these numbers indicate what suspension is in the truck? and what kind of top speed could i expect out of this truck end763 and quad box. 11r24.5 tires
  9. Thats a good idea i think Stengel bros. sells those. i wonder how much they cost? I imagine those are spacers which allow you to install it without sliding it in from the back. and if they are i could probably mill them for the difference in width. the two inner rails on the 61 aren't as tall as the outer rail are they all like this? on all my other macks the rails fit tight against the outer. i hope this won't be an issue with fitting the trunion.
  10. 55's 58's 65's i don't know how to tell the difference. but they are massive compared to 44's how would i go about switching the entire setup? the trunions look completely different to me( that is one is entirely in between the frame rails and one is not) i havn't yet measured it but i'am certain you just can't slide the new trunion up inside the triple rails on the b61.
  11. Thanks Glenn . I probably didn't state what i wanted to do accurately enough. I would like to know if i can swap the housings also. maybe the new housings will fit on the old springs? or the new housing and new springs will fit on the old beam. or finally (and least attractive option to me) maybe i can put the new beam and everything on an old trunion. i don't know if any of these option would work but i hope at least one will.
  12. I have 63 b-61sx with Heavy rears on brass. i would like to swap in the set of 44's from a 2000 cl . do any parts interchange between these camelback systems? thanks
  13. i had the same thought . I tried cleaning the radiator . in fact last time i took the whole thing out and washed it thoroughly and even took the top tank off to make sure the tubes were ok . It didn't drop the temp so thats when i put the second fan drive on. The second drive did drop the temp but i quit hearing it come on after only 2 months. i do hose out my radiator when i wash the truck.
  14. I have a 96 rd with e7 350 mechanical. the original fan drive lasted 9 years. When i replaced it the dealer gives me a horton relacement . it quits working in less than a year. So get another one which goes bad in two months. I have been driving all winter with a bad drive and its ok, but the first warm day i can't push over 15 pounds of boost on a grade without cooking it. I was told by another o/o that there are different drives that come on at different temps but my local parts dept is of no help. i have also been wondering if there is a air clutch fan drive for this combination. The one on my truck is viscous type. Thanks
  15. Thanks for the quick replies. I found the frame numbers its a B-61sx and matches the title i got. my plans for the truck involve extending the frame and moving the trunion back to get the proper wheelbase for 17.5 foot dump body. it has the big cone rears ( unsure if 55 58 or something else) i was wondering if i could use the original trunion and/ or springs and put on the 44's from my parts truck( a 2000 cl). is anyting the same such as pad sizes or the beam size? I would also like to have at least an 18,000 front axle could i put one in from an 81 or any other doaner withou to much trouble the truck already has factory power steering? thanks again for your help Richard
  16. Hello I just purchased what i thought was a b-61 dump truck but the tag inside the door says its a b-68 T. The title i got with the truck says its a b-61 and it has b-61 emblems on the hood. I don't know how a b-68 differs from a b-61. I was guessing that somebody changed the door at some point. are there numbers on the frames of these trucks? thanks Richard
