  2. I was going to say.....I know which dump truck I'd wanna drive and it ain't that black one. But I do know guys that think a large cab full of fluffy electronics and cup holders is more beneficial than good old simple tough reliability. But I guess you gotta be comfortable and have room to lay down when you are broke down on the side of the road. That is the only good thing about my Western Star. I've had many comfortable sleeps stretched out across the cab every parked regen and breakdown, LOL

  4. I've been lucky enough to heavy haul with R's, and V8 Superliner's and MH Ultraliners and CL's. But I have a soft spot for the R. That was my favorite do all truck. Until you dive the V8, LOL. Anybody know the story behind that whiskey and why it was? Was it a promotional thing, or was it done by the whiskey company? Mine was found by a relative when they bought a home and were cleaning it out.
  5. Yes. We saw the pics of an unfinished cab, and I do love the idea of an old school simple truck. But those pics showed components like the mirror arms and mounts that look kinda toy like and not like they will last in a vocational environment. If they got one built and got it out on a job for people to see they would have a better chance.

  8. May as well post one of the 87 R Model's I hauled salt with too. This was a strong little E6 350. Grossed 140,000 pounds all it's life running 8 to 12% hills north of here.

My friend found one of these pics on social media, so I figured since they have been also featured in the Canadian Bulldog Magazine back in the day I would post I may as well post my good friend's and his fathers old Mack's. The E9 V8 Superliner was a show and shine winner at El Rodeo Du Camion in Quebec. And the R pulling the float trailers had what he built as the very first auxiliary power unit around here back when there was no such thing. He put a Vauxhall engine in the side saddle storage box that charged the batteries, pre-heated the engine and wet line hydraulic oil tank and provided climate control in the cab when parked.
  10. The Australians did it right. I can handle the new cab as a W900 when it looks like that with real breathers. Not those ugly Coronado wanna-be vents we get on the new W990.

  14. You kinda hit the nail on the head Red Horse. At the time I started there were still a lot of gas jobs working. And those Ford's where everywhere around here doing everything from dump trucks, to loggers to hauling freight. But I had dreams of R Models and Superliners in my head, LOL So you didn't think of Ford as a "real big truck." But the truth was they had a real good frame. Add to that a nice interior, good visibility and maneuverability, etc. The biggest problems I've seen with them is the same as with all old Ford cars and trucks. Cab rust and the vinyl dash that would would crack and split from the sun. It was very hard to find a Ford that didn't have a cracked dash. But ya, that little short hood LTS was a fun truck when you had a 400 or 425 Cat under the hood.
  15. To think back in the day I drove so many of those Ford's I was praying to get out of one because I wanted a Mack. Today I wish I could get back into an old Ford, LOL. They were a good truck. Drove many with 2 stroke Detroit power and a few 3406B Cat's.

  17. Ya, but even if that ever did happen, Volvo would still make sure Mack ignores the heavy haulers. They would probably limit it to 450 h.p. and 1650 torque. LOL
  18. I would have come un-F'n-glued on that clown, LOL. He would have never heard the end of what a piece of shit is, LOL. I did that at my Star dealer one day. Salesman wasn't too happy. I didn't know he had a customer in a new Star and was making a deal, I only saw him. So I walked up and made the comment about the piece of shit lemon, and then went on about what a piece of crap mine is. LOL.

  20. I could be wrong, but I thought Autocar had the ACL conventional right to the end. I do know for sure that a couple years later when that group of investors bought the Autocar name and trademark, they also bought the rights to the White Expeditor cab which they still use.

  23. I think it's more that they are smart enough to stick what is profitable for them. They wouldn't have much market share amongst all the other conventionals. And you are right James, I still see lots of old steel hood Autocars at work every day in Michigan too.
