  1. Did Ford truck take over Macks old Oakville plant or is Ford truck a different facility?
  2. B42, Perhaps the E logs inception is a lobbied for, attempt for the major truckload carriers to rid themselves of the last of the experienced drivers that are such a thorn in their side! With auto brake, lane keeping technology and computer shifted (but gear driven) trannys that get as good or better mileage than manually shifted ones, the need for "real" drivers who drive defensively and know how to shift for best fuel economy is reduced, since these drivers are aware of all the "games" companies play to reduce their income loading by wage rate, the "double dispatch" to make sure a critical load is covered which leaves the second driver without a load or income etc! Just sayin'
  3. What year and model is that old bulldog! Looks like early thirties!
  4. Mackey, old truck drivers were burnt out a lot earlier than modern ones! Imagine doing a long run in that AC with the solid rubber tires! They have a couple of them at Iowa 80 near you I'm sure you've been there!
  5. We always called them tubs! Very ridgid structurally, one of our drivers rolled one over in Margate Florida, (a dump trailer) and it showed nothing but scratches when back on its wheels! He probably had to change his drawers though!😁
  6. Mrs Mack Paul, I watched a couple episodes of "outback truckers" last night much less "scripted" than "ice road truckers" I quit watching that when the driver used the Jake brake on ice! Have driven a few r and u models, never heard of the "dreaded Eldorado" seat the r and u models I drove had the basic Mack suspension seat with the flat bottom cushion and slightly curved backrest very uncomfortable and thin! Your r model is coming along great! If you got paid for all the time you put in straightening that tank you could retire! But the results were worth it! I often wondered if all Aussies and Brits are left handed or ambidextrous lol I can't imagine shifting left handed, but I guess I could learn,as I learned to split a compound two handed!😁
  7. I can't speak for the new diesels, but when I ran the GMC 7000 "hotshot rig" with the 8.2 Detroit I definitely got a 1 mpg improvement using Howes additive in the small bottle! When the truck was new I used power service when below zero to prevent gelling! But I kept hearing that the purple coloring would clog the injectors! All the big truck stops claim to put additive in their fuel in winter, but You never know for sure! or how much! When you add your own you're sure! I recall one TS advertising that they would pay your tow if you gelled while using their fuel! I wasn't holding my breath!😁 I think it was 1990 when it hit 25 below in Chicago! I passed dozens of trucks gelled up on my way to Florida but I had a jug of power service in my tanks so I was ok! I've been told the coal haulers in wv and Kentucky put a gallon of unleaded regular in their fuel tanks when it's cold, I think ill pass on that! I put 8 ounces of Lucas in my p.u and my wife's car every fill up, so far so good!
  8. OD which Tiger TS did you stop at they used to have one in Texas and one in Louisiana been a long time, but I seem to recall the one in Louisiana being a nasty place, including the tiger cage! The one your photo shows must be the Texas one as it looks like a fairly nice cage!
  9. The single axle Pete and the logger are awesome! They all are really! Anyone see the 509 Diamond T that sold at Barret Jackson this week thirty grand well worth it was a feature truck in Hemmings! 25000 original miles!
  10. I believe acetone was the base ingredient in the model glue that the teenagers used to sniff in the 60s! it is no longer permitted to be used in model cement!
  11. Nice little "stovebolt" I had an 88 GMC two ton hotshot truck with the same sheet metal, unfortunately it was an 8.2 Detroit, for my money the worst diesel engine ever built!
  12. OD are you going to continue posting your pictures of the week? Haven't seen them for awhile!. On that subject do you or any of the members read Hemmings Classic Cars? There is a picture in the latest issue of a house moving truck that the editors can't identify, it looks like the Euclid truck you posted in the last pictures of the week! Not the big off road model, the one about the size of a three axle tractor.
  13. Was sitting in a t.s many years ago and this stroke gets out of a shiny "large car" and comes over to me, "how many driving hours am I allowed to log" he asks me!😁
  14. Hvy gunner, thanks for the reply! I wonder if the satellite based eld will be consistently accurate! I'm thinking if a driver has an accident that is obviously not his fault with injuries or death, and the eld says he is out of hours when he is not in reality! The Qualcomm which most otr drivers use is satellite based and is about 98 or 99 percent accurate but that 1percent could put a driver in jail! There are billboards all over the interstate and ads on tv "have an accident with a big truck call us" As I'm sure you are aware we live in an "anti truck society" no trucking company wants to put their fate in the hands of a jury and will almost always settle out of court even if the driver is blameless! Remember when the cdl was going to replace all those reckless drivers with professionals!( insert laugh track)😁 and in only three weeks! Of training!
  15. Is that rack on the roof for luggage?
  16. KSB,she's a twin steer right? Great looking truck! Especially at Christmas! How about some engine and drive line specs!
  17. I have a question, there appear to be older trucks that lack the technology to permit the installation of an electronic logging device, I see used trucks on Craigslist that are promoted as "don't require electronic logs,"so apparently you can avoid electronic logs if you have a truck built before a certain year? So the eld at this point requires a newer truck to work right? Two things come to mind if this is true The 5yr rule that many companies inflict on their contractors will require them to use electronic logs! Also I can see a future eld being designed which will work in any truck! The old Overdrive Magazine slogan applies " always changing, never changing"😁
  18. Heavy Gunner, once again, the golden rule applies " he who has the gold makes the rules" any activity while awake adds to a person's fatigue meetings paperwork etc is UPS avoiding the "14 hrs rule" when their drivers aren't on the highway? Hmmm
  19. KSB,this hours of service endless changing, rearranging of same etc,etc is ostensibly for the purpose of saving the lives of everyone who uses the highway system, right? I just recalled a few years ago that scientists developed a method for determining the wakefulness and alertness of a driver by installing a sensor in the truck cab that could monitor a drivers mental and physical condition by the the nodding of his head, blinking of his eyes and so forth! I can see this as a way to eliminate all the hours of service b.s.! The experiment also potentially would include a buzzer to alert the driver that after several warnings, the truck would shut off! On paper this sounds good, but having driven like all of us "in the real world" many problems exist! Parking may be the first in congested areas with few truck stops like new England ,the east coast, and parts of Florida! A couple of other problems are the circadian rhythm situation which makes almost every human sleepy in the wee hours of the morning,no matter how many hours they've slept!,and the fact that each person's physical condition can affect their ability to stay awake! Then there are the political factors, do the companies really want a driver to pull over if his sleepiness will affect delivery time!😁 The endless "safety versus profitability" issue! Opinions please!
  20. A lot of owner operators left International when Schneider bought them maybe that's why it was parked!
  21. Rat snakes are good "mousers" even better than cats! Pretty too!
  22. Fxfymm , don't be breathing that acetone, highly toxic! Also highly flammable! Although the 50/50 mix makes it a little safer!
  23. I love a cars! What's it got for a tranny? Looks like the 681-c Guide headlights that every other big truck and street rod in the last 80 years used great look also the two original bumpers!
