  1. That lady does resemble Barbara Bush Lol
  2. OD,I'd bet the biggest plate of barbecue in Gladys that car is totalled! I'm seeing 1500 bucks in parts plus the inner stuff you can't see, before labor! 41 is right, but you need to find an old rural salvage yard with some older parts! The big yards here in Fla aren't taking anything earlier than 2006, due to the low price of scrap iron and other factors like handling, isn't worth their while! My local salvage guy showed me an auction brochure from all the salvage yards going out of business!
  3. Mower man I HATE those moulded plastic hood and fender mirrors they put on late model tractors, spoils the whole appearance of the truck!
  4. Freightrain do you truck out of Barberton? or do you have some other type of job? The reason I ask is my best friend who lives in Champion says they closed all the Ohio scales, and the DOT uses roving units and goes into truckstops and wakes drivers up in the am to check their books and equipment randomly!! I didn't ask if he meant they totally closed them or if they just prefer to leave them closed and use roving units! I used to run a "big shot" out of Champion and mostly hauled insulation out of Tallmadge from UC Industries,That was in the late eighties and early nineties. At that time Ohio definitely was using their scales, because I spent a good bit of time dodging them! If they are going onto private property checking trucks randomly it raises a lot of constitutional issues! In my 35 years of driving I've only seen the DOT come into a truck stop once or twice to persue a specific truck!
  5. Ya get em' cheap ya get em' dumb!
  6. I used to weld barges on the Mon river when it was -27 in Floreffe Pa and thaw frozen pipes with my welder when I got off! Now it goes down to 60 in the day and I stay in the house! My daughter said it went down to 38 last night.in Dallas!
  7. Got a Lionel set when I was six ,two union Pacific A units, received an animated car every Christmas for about five years, cattle unloading car, rotating beacon car, barrel unloading car, etc! My first set was my grandpas diecast 2-6_2,steamer with a tin tender from the thirties! Had the smaller transformer with the horizontal controller, but I recall the big one Ranchopper mentioned, had a vertical handle on each end! When I was about 13 HO was the big thing, so I sold the whole Lionel set and bought an American Flyer HO, BIG mistake ! Kept the thirties steamer tho!
  8. Makes me glad I've never been farther south than Key largo!

    What?

The first big truck I ever rode in was a Brockway like that 220 Cummins with an Eaton "bogie 5and 3"! Load of steel sheets Pittsburgh to Chicago 1968!
  10. OD,I saw an old photo from the fifties of a flatbed behind a day cab, had to stop quick with a load of 2 or3" pipe, The driver was sitting up straight at the wheel with a length of pipe thru his head and out the windshield! Best argument I've ever seen for bulkhead or headache rack

    What?

My dad cut the blades off an old reel type mower, Made me a go cart slowest go cart on earth! Was about a two hp Continental! I used to have to cut the grass around the sidewalk of his salvage yard with a reel type push mower!
  12. Anyone see "Moonfire"?
  13. The only thing " badder" than an old Mack is a steam loco in full cry! When I was in elementary school in the early fifties every morning an old steamer coal train ran thru the valley in Venetia Pa! The smoke lingered for about a half hour! Mike, your fellow Tennessean Casey Jones is smiling down from heaven! MH,Fred I saw a long video of that steam train that ran out of Roanoke, fascinating!
  14. Shut the thing off at a light and restart it next to some teenagers in a convertible! Don't do it to any elderly folks they're liable to croak!
  15. Are you going to play a recording of a 673 T to accompany the truck when driving!😁
  16. Keith, slightly off subject, did you see the wheeler Dealers episode where they put the electric motor in an Alfa (I think it was) runs like a raped ape ? Stick shift too! One question how do you protect yourself bystanders etc against an explosion from " offgasing" these are "wet batteries" right? Until you have had a battery blow up in your face(I have!) You couldn't possibly appreciate how volatile hydrogen gas is!😁 Of course it only happens with a recently charged battery! I was 14 and struck a spark on one of the connections on my dad's homemade battery charger! This was a 12 volt car battery! You have the potential on that battery for a real Hiroshima! I'm thinking some kind of fan that runs continuously to blow away the fumes! In retrospect I'm thinking the people who engineered the prius and other hybrids have solved that problem! The potential lawsuits from a bunch of exploding tree huggers can't be ignored! Sorry I'm not too politically correct!
  17. Are any of you gonna watch the St Petersburg grand prix? Have drivers from all your states and countries Russia,Vlad? Oz, New Zealand UK etc! I'm gone to turn on the tube! Bye! Was down there the 1st year!
  18. Maddog, are the " maggot wagons" you refer to the walking floor garbage wagons coming out of that landfill in the Bronx, or are you referring to the personal hygiene of the (5) drivers!😁 Mower man, I used to run across I 10 into California and occasionally Vegas with conversation vans in 99 and2000, they were running "Mexican towbars" with up to three used( junk) cars from the back lots of car dealers going to Mexico also saw a lot of medium duty and class 8 used trucks (cut in half to avoid the duty and welded back together at their destination in Mexico and central America! The junk equipment and marginal drivers kept the DOT busy after Nafta passed! Fxfym a four wheeler passed me once on 495 in dead darkness with his lights off ( had one of those digital dashboards where the instruments are lit all the time) How do ANY of them make it home alive?!
  19. Never drove a mixer, but my good friend did...a B model! He was about 18 or 19. One of those " natural truck drivers" that come along from time to time! About 1972. He used to ride with me in my wrecker.I was 26 he was about 16. Decided to let him drive! Backing a car on a wrecker is the same principle as backing an 18,just shorter! The second time he backed a car up he put it right in! He went to work at the local Diamond T/Reo Dealer as a lot boy.next time I saw him was driving for Coastal Tank Lines I was driving for Nu Car Carriers. That's how it used to be you"worked your way up"! I Dont think it's quite that way these days! Interestingly I just saw a big ad on tv for TMC ! A sign of the times! When they we're starting out it was rumored that if the owner opened a truck door and it wasn't clean the driver was terminated! Now the so called "driver shortage" has them begging for drivers among the general population! Have they changed hands? Good luck with the clean interiors!😁
  20. XDude ,congratulations on your class a! I suspect a large percentage of the steering wheel holders out there would fail the pre trip! I believe that anyone driving a commercial vehicle should have to at least be required to learn a pre trip! Even non cdl drivers! I can't count the straight trucks with lights out and bald tires that I see in my four wheeler! I was grandfathered into my class a,because I had a Pa class 3 before the CDL came out. If you fail one part of the test do you have to take the whole thing over?,or just the part you failed?
  21. Bigl62 Do they still make Howes fuel additive? I got improved fuel economy using it! Was that 6000lb load a high tarped load of insulation? Are you pulling an air ride trailer that you can raise one axle in good weather with a light load? Many variables as someone mentioned!
  22. In the late sixties, Overdrive did a road test out of the Allentown Pa Mack plant pitting a237 maxidyne equipped R model against a 250 Cummins equipped R model with a 10 speed RR! Equal loads and trailers using two equally skilled Mack test drivers! They ran on the hills around Allentown and some fairly level sections of the Pennsylvania turnpike. The Maxidyne 5 speed outperformed the Cummins 10 speed on the hills and they were pretty close on the level! I believe Mack defined usable horsepower with the Maxidyne series of matched engines and transmissions! In the early years of the Maxidyne the old drivers berated those who drove the Macks as a bunch of rookies etc Lol I remember making a fool of myself the first time I drove a Maxidyne!, being used to shifting at 16 to 18 hundred rpm and the thing wouldn't go in! However like all equally spec'd trucks they don't all drive the same! I had a couple R and U models that would downshift smoothly at 1400 on a hard pull! How long do the Canadian armed forces keep those tractors? I'm sure they're well maintained,a heavy hauler might do well to buy one or more when they auction them off! Eh?
  23. Snowdog that's a sharp " binder" the previous owner HAD to have covered that seat, even with 25000! I consider that front end treatment the best looking loadstar! Fxfym, when we were building the community of Margate Florida one of the several dumps I drove was a late sixties loadstar 345, 5 and 2, manual steering, boy did that puppy steer hard! The B model with the air steering was really sweet!
  24. Very cool jeeps !
  25. I have never hauled "heavy" in Virginia so I can't speak to the pros and cons of the new bridge law. On the "three strikes, but you're not out yet" at the risk of being " jaded" I think I smell pressure from the major carriers to get those chumps behind the wheel at any cost! I remember and I'm sure Otherdog does too many years ago when Va used to give you three "tries" to get your axle weights legal, but then started to issue violations the first time you crossed the scale with your axles "wrong"!. An obvious ploy to maximize revenue! Another thought on people having trouble passing a legitimate CDL course,if too many fail the school could lose it's certification! That costs money!
