I hope that none of you think my post about Chelsea Clinton's husband was intended to be antisemitic. It was not! I judge people by their actions and how they treat me period! I would have definitely voted for Bernie over the other two!!

Trump and Immigration (Illegal Immigrants in the US)
BillyT replied to kscarbel2's topic in Odds and Ends
Teamster Grrrl, while I'm sure gearhead 204 didn't make up the 170 wage, there may be some hidden deductions he's unaware of. It is both tragic and ironic that some things never change! I'm familiar with the enslavement of migrants down here in the citrus industry. They were locked in their camps and not permitted to leave during the harvesting season! The dairy farm you mentioned reminds me of an investigative report I saw in the 60s on Charlie Cannons town,Cannons Mills NC. Where the textile workers were "required" to buy everything they needed from Charlies company store, at his prices of course! Rent their houses from him and go to his doctors (where of course they were never sick enough to take off work!) The movie Norma Rae was based on Cannons Mills.Another excellent report was Edward R Morrows "Harvest of Shame" about migrant workers. The same abuses took place in the coal industry in WV, Kentucky and that area with the company stores and coal and iron police( thugs and Pinkertons). You mentioned the manure lagoon and I was reminded of an enormous feeder lot of I 10 in E Texas there was a mobile home smack in the middle of the cattle pens. The smell is indescribable, but I'm thinking a worker family lives there! I forget the term, but this all goes back to the middle ages when the king literally owned the peasants! I'm not a migrants advocate, but they are human beings! -

Saw an interesting factoid in the report on immigrant labor.Immigration has helped build and maintain the textile industry! I was unaware America still had a textile industry! It has been years since I've seen an American made article of clothing including Carhardt, levis and other iconic brands! Ironically many brands are made in Pakistan a Sharia law state that has sworn " death to Americans" Also, textile jobs while often difficult and repetitious are not a job Americans are unwilling to do such as poultry and meat processing and crop harvesting! Which are almost 100percent immigrant labor, legal and otherwise! -
Saw that Corbett fxfyfmn, cool! Last month had a Jimmy Cabover" cannonball"

Also remember that the Bmt members all have various opinions about the election and how our government should be run,but this is AMERICA ! And we are allowed to criticize OUR government without being dragged from our homes and never being seen again! Also remember those who died so we can have these freedoms! -

Gearhead204, if the 170 a day figure you quote is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt you, you shouldn't be subsidizing their housing! At that wage, they can get together and rent clean campers or cheap motels (on a weekly basis which is cheaper) 90 percent of which are owned by legal ( mostly) immigrants from the middle east and the Indian subcontinent! Most migrant workers are paid on a piece rate or by the pound, depending on what they are harvesting. In Florida, the citrus pickers are said to average less than minimum wage. That is what I'm talking about when I say low wages! I have little knowledge of the crops grown in the Pacific northwest. Are they picking Apple's, blueberries etc or other fairly high dollar crops? I can't imagine piece rate on cheap crops paying that much...educate me! The migrants down here are mostly living in dirthole depreciated out motels and barracks owned by the growers! -

Like heavy gunner,I agree with Ksb Enforce the laws! Take the money in " social welfare" funds and hire more border patrol agents, creates employment! I'm referring to the money used on illegals not the money to help those who legitimately need it! A lot of if not most of president elect Trumps promises however appealing to many were "campaign rhetoric"! It is monetary impossible to build a wall along the whole Mexican border! When the money is needed for infrastructure! It is not impossible to end " sanctuary cities" and start to publicly deport as many illegals as financially feasible! It is not impossible to prosecute companies who hire illegals! These three things if properly and publicly done will remove the incentive to enter America illegally. Another thing, No person working in America including green card workers doing the work no one else wants should receive a wage so low that they can't afford decent Housing and proper nutrition! The run down migrant camps and third world conditions most green card workers live in are a disgrace to America! I noted that several states voted to raise the minimum wage. Good! I don't like Trump and I don't like the Clinton's! But I'm willing to give him a chance! -
So Chelsea, can't maintain her standard of living on her hedge fund manager husband's income? Or is she still married? If so why do they keep calling her Chelsea CLINTON.Perhaps because her husband is Jewish ... Like Bernie Sanders who was said to have been berated by the DNC however subtly, for that "accident of birth" There is no precedent among the Clinton females to use their maiden names or Hillary would be Hillary Rodham! I don't recall a Chelsea CLINTON divorce announcement in the news and that would certainly be national news! The marriage certainly was!

Thanks for the response,Daily diesel! Just one of many remnants of a once proud steel industry!

Good point 41! How would the media survive without chaos and discontent? -
And make the tooth fairy Secretary of state!

I'm going to invent a catalytic converter for cows! Ever notice how many products are carcinogenic in California? I guess the answer is don't use them in California! The Weber carburetor on my truck is illegal in California, that's how I know it's a good product!

Yeah OD they were slow you never wanted to get there during shift change! I loaded at Fairless Hills once but I don't remember anything about it!

Just saw an article on the death of the "Last human cannonball" in the Tampa Bay Times.Hugo Zacchini 88 died October 30 in Tampa.Always sad when these " larger than life" people die! He was the last of his family, many of whom were shot from cannons in their circus and carnival careers, both male and female! Mr Zacchini had two engineering degrees from the UF.The cannon was mounted on a beautiful late thirties Diamond T chassis! I suspect he had a lot to do with the construction of the cannon as many of the circus performers built their own equipment and props.Mr Wallenda who walked a tightrope across the grand canyon used only family members to install the cable across the canyon! Makes sense, no room for mistakes there!! There are a fascinating array of photos and videos on this subject on Google including an older cannon and truck some of you may identify, could be a White.

I hope Punxsutawney Phil made it across the road ok! We are seeing a lot of gopher tortoises this time of year they graze on the side of the road or on your lawn just like a cow! They are gorging themselves to get ready for winter!

OD,I mostly delivered to Lackawanna,(gate 10) from Homestead Pa.I don't recall picking up there. There used to be a little diner on the edge of the property we stopped at. You mentioned Jevic I had forgotten all about them! Are they still around? Ran KW conventionals right? Blue I think.I agree Most US Steel facilities were dirty and chaotic! Irvin works wasn't bad ( newer facility, galvanized coils) never figured out why we had to tarp galvanized coils in the summer! The cleanest best run steel plant I've ever loaded at was Empire Detroit in Portsmouth Oh!
-
Sorry about your coworker OD! Pipe always made me nervous requires extra caution! On the less tragic but more annoying subject of tarping,my co driver and I picked up a load of used foodservice equipment in Northern California with all kinds of sharp edges and corners. We taped cardboard over all the sharp edges to no avail! By the time we got to Indiana our 800 dollar tarps were in shreds! The load was mostly used galvanized and stainless in summer why did it need tarped? Any of you old "ironhaulers" who used to p.u and deliver at US Steels Lackawanna Ny mill it burnt down a couple days ago said to have been arson.

41, I have always loved the "big sixes" 270 and 292 jimmys 300 Ford's, with all that torque, and that "glass breaking" exhaust note I always wanted to build a street rod with a Buick straight 8,so smooth and sound so good with straight exhaust!. Teamster Grrrl it is interesting that with today's alloys and lubricants the average Japanese style front wheel drive car is good for 300000mi without a major repair with proper maintenance, but I swear that they engineer in the the compute r and electrical problems that cause you to go back to the dealer and get your eyes screwed out! It also drives the purchase of corporate America's no 1 moneymaker the extended warranty! But the average citizen is not blameless in this scenario as they convince themselves they need all that unnecessarily bullshit like Bluetooth connectivity and my absolute favorite, federally mandated "incompetence mitigation devices" like lane maintenance, parking assistance, automatic braking etc ad nauseam. How are any of us alive without these devices!๐ Parking assistance on a 500hp Camaro! It would be laughable if it weren't so tragic!

Looks like most of the difficult areas to repair are in good condition that restoration is going great! The last time I did any paint and bodywork was three years ago and I was amazed at how much supplies had gone up in price! Somebody hit my quarter in a shopping center and damaged a 2' by 1' area, materials cost 100dollars!

My pickup is 24 yrs old and totally "emissions delete" except for the pc v valve (my doing) The average citizen buys a new car every 6 yrs so how much pollution is created when a new car is built? I paid 1200.$ for the truck in near new condition and will keep it til I die (It will definitely outlast me) so how much would I have spent to get 10 more mpg and meet emissions guidelines? On the minus side it is cramped and steers as hard as an R model without power steering! So who's ahead? I don't know!๐

I read many years ago that Lancaster Ct. Pa and several other places that have a large Amish population have polluted wells and streams because they fertilize their crops with animal manure! They also don't drive cars, or use tractors so I wonder if it evens itself out!
-
I used wire nuts with a squirt of silicone in them on my flatbed looks like crap but keeps the salt out! Was always pressed for time on the road or working in inclement weather! The proper deal if you have time, is solder and heat shrunk sleeves๐ scotchlok was a clever invention but looks quick and dirty!

Bickering among ourselves is not constructive,so I will change the subject to something that affects us all! Car and Driver had an article on the recent escalation of accidents involving heavy trucks which pictured a semi plowing into a group of hapless four wheelers, and a terrified lady motorist viewing the carnage! I expected a slanted column bashing truckers, but the article was pretty " balanced". They touched on the usual stuff, hours of service, fatigue and the NHTSA ( no hope truckers stop asking) and ATA (anti truck driver association) and their advocacy for a lower truck speed limit and truck governors etc. Now there's a couple of fresh concepts! I'd like some of your views, particularly on truck driver training schools and new driver competency! They did allude to the lack of "active suspension" on big trucks,an experienced driver doesn't need this expensive nonsense!
