  1. It's a Siamese twin western star, aIr agree with Hvy Gunner is Fugly but beautifully constructed!
  2. There has been one of them in Hemmings for a long time, is fwd with a Ford flathead. Anyone know the history of the vehicle? Where were they made, and for what industry? Hand built low production for sure! Can't place the cab, maybe 40's Gm,or more likely Ford since they used a flat head.
  3. Florida permits 44000 on an "axle set" which I believe is to accommodate the citrus and logging industries. Both industries often load in the groves and woods with no way to "get legal" before hitting the state roads and interstate and the weigh stations. Those single axle dump buckets teamster grrrl is referring to are called "mini wheelers"down here in "gator country".
  4. I believe there was a trade school where you had to have an 82 or lower IQ to qualify. How about a Rambler that you had to pull the a.c. compressor to get at #1 spark plug? Most Taurus v6's are s.o.b.s to remove the one spark plug, also the sensor, between the firewall and block! My 92Izuzu p.u,you have to pull the intake manifold to replace the fuel pump.Just installed an electric pump! I've made all kinds of tools to deal with this nonsense over the yrs The engineers all went to that school!
  5. Corn cob blasting is very gentle too, I used to do some welding for a sandblaster who painted trucks. He used cob blasting on fragile stuff, like antique cars.
  6. Interesting subject,All of you are correct! If the pitting is not deep enough to affect structural integrity, almost any good commercial plastic filler will work, It seems to bond better over a quality primer,In today's world I think a urethane product is the way to go.I used to have good results with zinc chromate, but hard to find due to epa regs.Napa has it in spray cans for small jobs, was pricey!Azb755v8,I remember when a gallon of plastic was 8 bucks! I had over a hundred dollars In materials to repair a 12 square inch dent, some stroke put in my p.u. I've never owned a body shop, but I can see where ins.companies might require an inert gas product for structural welds,no slag inclusions etc.As far as the dot is concerned, most dot inspectors aren't welders.I used to get called out when a driver was red tagged by the dot, only had a stick machine on the truck, always passed inspection. However the way things are going I could see them requiring a certificate in a truck that has been repaired or rebuilt saying what process was used, especially Cal. I used to go to no small amount of effort to have my " ducks in a row " in Cal. Especially Banning!
  7. Greendash, I grew up in mcmurray pa,used to weld on J andL Steels barge fleet on the Mon river in Floreffe Pa.Small world huh?
  8. Ive heard if you install the seals properly on a 2cycle Detroit's pushrod tubes you can control oil leakage,Don't know. A couple of my hotshot buddies ran the1st pre emissions dodge turbo Cummins, were getting 20mpg pulling a 48 ft flatbed with. 8000lbs of insulation, across I 80 in oh and pa. But the 1ton Dodges didn't hold up. They had trouble with the getrag five speed, and the injector pumps. Most went to two ton and class 8single axles. I really like the46 Chevy with the 453. Also the two stick tranny lots of fun! .
  9. There is a perception among "new breed truck drivers" "I ain't driven' no Cabover" While they are in their 2week driving course before they've driven ANYTHING.The major carriers pander to this perception which is I believe there are no class8 Cabover built in America anymore. The carriers want the least experienced drivers that their insurance carriers will permit them to hire! I've driven both including crackerbox Jimmy 7400White "Japanese Freightliners" 9670 " binders" and a few others. My favorite Cabover. Was a MH Mack single axle.It rode best, spring ride too! The flat floor Navistar, however ugly was a good long distance Cabover.I have a slight preference for conventional equipment, but driving a Cabover never killed me! The major carriers like Freightliners because they're cheap. The long hood navistars are better built, except for that fiberglass bubble in the sleeper.
  10. Hurst scrambler, you were "leading" the four wheeler too close, and you should have padded the pintle, shame on you! I believe x10 is a grade of steel truck shop uses for frame work.
  11. Great looking "binder" Love the long nose and their Hendrickson "brother" is there a side road you can practice on? You're empty,I'm guessing less than 20000,Put the aux. In its lowest gear, and see if you can run the main without splitting gears, see where it's governed at before you start out.Shift just below that so it doesn't lock up.It will be easier to use the clutch til you get used to it later. It should drop in around 1500,each double clutch of course. That tranny should be worn in enough to shift easily. When you hit 5th ,run thru the aux to over just like a 4 speed, downshift the same way, watch your temp gauge! I'd check the grease level in the tranny and differential before you leave, good luck!
  12. U1st a few comments then a few questions! Even if they(whoever they are) perfect bio fuel,or biodiesel, which I'm pretty sure they have, statistically it would take every inch of arable land in America to grow enough product to fuel all the vehicles in America.consequently the land used for fuel competes with the land used for food! Part of the answer lies in using the waste products from agriculture to produce biofuel. Corn, soybeans, and sugar cane, are three crops that make good biofuel (the actual crop, not it's byproducts)Perhaps if we eat less refined sugar we could use the excess sugar grown for biofuel lol I'm not a tree hugger or a knee jerk liberal, but you'd have to be a drooling cretin to not see how were f.....g up the earth! Ok now to the military multi fuel trucks. We're they basically a diesel that could run on most petroleum based fuels?,such as kerosene, jet fuel filtered cooking oil etc?I've seen them when I was in the army, but never worked on one.Do they automatically compensate for the octane of the fuel?.is there an adjustment on the injector pump for each grade of fuel? Maybe one of you worked in the motor pool. There was a teenager who converted an old Mercedes diesel sedan to run on used cooking oil, drove coast to coast on free used cooking oil. One of the problems as someone mentioned is the fat clogs up the system and freezes in winter.Just like the wax that gives #2diesel it's power in winter.Another problem is used cooking oil isn't free anymore.McDonald's claims to be using recycled cooking oil to power part of it's truck fleet.I see this as a big b.s. political move to promote sales,I don't trust corporate America or the bought and sold legislators that run America, but I trust you guys(and gals, sorry teamster grrrrl) gimme some input on this subject!
  13. Lotta cool.trucks! My favorite is the 36 Cabover You can see where they took a conv. Cab and raised it up filled the firewall and put the standard grille below it,like those 50's cornbinders, giving me an Idea!
  14. I represent that remark, and I'll bet Hat City does too!! Lol But I'll admit they have 6 toed cats in Key West and a few other "unusual" species as well!Never been as far south as Key West, but I did deliver the 1st plastic underground gas station tank in Key Largo.
  15. Welcome Arnold you'll like it here!
  16. Nice "stick hauler" scarecrow, that photo is an optical illusion, At 1st I thought it was a single axle pulling a short three axle trailer. After closer scrutiny I realize It's a full screw straight truck with a steerable tag in front and one in the back! Heard a rumor that back in the day when the coal haulers in Wva and Ky were running mostly 2 stick Spicers and Mack quads when dad was teaching his kid to drive he'd sit in the co drivers seat with his tire thumper and every time the kid went for the clutch he'd smack him in the knee with it! Lol I've delivered new Ford's to almost every dealer in Wva and quite a few in Ky I have the greatest respect for you coal haulers and stick haulers in those hills!
  17. Sweet mh Paul I consider them one of the finest cabovers ever built.Do they sell Black Magic detailing products in Australia? They make a wheel cleaner that would make short work of cleaning bugs n stuff off your kangaroo guard.Probably wouldn't work on kangaroos!lol
  18. Outstanding bulldog Des,thanks for posting!
  19. And you will still be learning on the day you either do something else or retire! Sadly for you folks you just hit upon my favorite subject!! I started hauling cars on a 6car(including the headlamp) single axle tractor,40 ft single axle trailer Ford gas job! My last rig was a Cottrell stinger steered 12car truck and trailer like yours only not as deluxe. Was Leaseway Motorcar out of Dundalk Md.Also owned Nu Car ,Arco, and Anchor Motor Freight. My 1st 12 car load took me 6 hrs to load!! One of my favorite stories involves an o/o in the late 70's.Back when you were allowed to drop s.t.I. After hrs,he gets to the dealer in the middle of the night with 7 datsons. The gates are locked and he has a good load in the morning! Hmm. What would you do? Had a 7000 gmc with a low headlamp. He pulls up against the cyclone fence, drags his long skids, from the back throws them over the fence climbs up the headlamp, and drops into the dealers lot! Pins his skids climbs up onto the trailer and unloads the top which he had already untied. Throws one skid over the fence climbs up the other, throws it down.Drags the skids to the rear of the trailer, unloads the bottom, loads the top, repeats the deal with the skids, stows them back on the trailer, and leaves! Bet that dealer was scratching his head in the morning he told me.lol those datsons had a very short overhang you wouldn't get away with that on most cars today. Next time folks...The missing bridge on rt 36 in pa,with no warning signs, and how do you straighten the quarter panel on a Datson you bent from tying it down too tight ! Obviously that's headramp not headlamp freaking spelchek!
  20. That DR is a baaad motor skooter !!!
  21. Hobert 62, Don't forget to remove the visegrips lol True story...I hung a set of aftermarket duals on my welding truck, was on the last hanger and too lazy to get a half inch wrench,so I used a vise grip. Two years later I'm under the truck doing something and there's the vise grip! A little rusty, but still hanging there!

  22. Thank you underdog! I have seen them many times on the road, didn't know whet they were called.Overdrive showed a sequence of photos showing the whole process.....amazing! Reginald Denny the driver who was beaten In the LA riots was driving one,4200 Transtar.Just watched the tape on my granddaughters kindle! Even more amazing a black trucker saw it on tv,went to the scene,And risked his life by driving Denny to the hospital in Danny's rig!
  23. I heard there is an annual contest out west between dump truckers, especially the type where the 2nd bucket fits into the 1st after its empty (only 1 hoist) the ones with the really long tongue between the truck and trailer. It was in Overdrive yrs ago.Does it still exist? May have been in the Antelope Valley.
  24. Knew the loggers used water cooled brakes, but thought they were custom made retrofit. What year is that Hayes and approximately what would it cost?Really cool piece of equipment!!
  25. Looks like you got it home,I didn't vue the earlier pictures!
